Playful Kiss makes a dismal premiere (ouch!)

OUCHHHHH. Even for those who don’t put much stock in drama ratings, this has to hurt: Playful Kiss premiered today with a painfully low rating, 3.5%. That’s even lower than the flop it replaced, Road No. 1, which ended on an already low 5.3%.

Unsurprisingly, competitor KBS Baker King Kim Tak-gu held a distant lead with 44%. SBS’s My Girlfriend Is a Gumiho stayed in second place with an 11.9%.

As in any discussion of ratings, please note that I make no judgments on quality of content. I’m still eager to dive in and watch the drama, and my anticipation of its story and appeal remain undiminished. It’s just that, 3.5%, well… that’s harsh, man. I wonder if rerun numbers on the weekend will be appreciably better.

To be honest, I was expecting Kiss to premiere in third place, but I thought it would be a lot closer than that. Perhaps idol power is not what it once was — or maybe it never had quite the pull that the media hyped it to have, with similarly low numbers for the anticipated Sungkyunkwan Scandal (6.3%) on Monday.

(I know you’re probably eager to talk about the episode, so can I just ask that you keep the BIG spoilers out of it? I’m looking forward to watching the premiere and would love to let plot surprises have their intended effect.)

This drama's low ratings has 2 factors. The baker kings' audience is well seasoned with baking for many weeks. The bread/cake is already done, ready to eat. The viewer range will be more from ordinary work of life. High school students and above have no strength to change the channel from their mothers/ grandmothers etc.
MK is more to entertain the 20+/- group and all have PCs to watch it online for almost free. Who cares for the TV that has ratings survey attached from the rating agencies.
Korea has around 49 million population. How many TV sets are linked for the ratings? 3.3% is meant for the rating links only. ^^

it happened. PK got very bad timing to start. I don't think the low rating came from casts or production yet. it's just first episode. The story of this original manga is quite simple and predictable. If they won't have any good strong chemisty between the lead couple, this drama will be pretty much done. at very least I hope PK can create some buzz on the net like 'You're Beautiful'.

imo, PK shouldn't compare to BOF at all. The original manga of BOF is far more famous and get the best seller of shoujo mangas. even Taiwanese version of BOA was very big hit that Taiwanese version of PK couldn't compare too. I'm a fan of both, but I got to accept that the plot of BOF is more appealling to majority than PK.

I watched it.. but the first 5 minutes was so annoying that I was skipping the entire episode.

I could see the goong resemblance and KHJ's acting was stiff as ever.. But he didn't look suitable enough.. I think its the hair cut that made him look so unappealing ..

Joe Cheng might not be the best actor around. But he sure did a great job in ISWAK. I'm not expecting KHJ to be as good as him, but please at least show some other expression instead of just standing there like a doll.

ahaha i totally agree with the hair cut.. i think he looks too girly and annoying with that hair!

and the opening and the other imaginations of ha-ni made it very childish.. (ok i know she has to be a bit childish according to the role but it was boring... )

fa-reakin ouch.

i never imagined it would be THAT low. had they casted the male lead differently.. i think their numbers might've been higher. YES, I'M BIAS. the story's got such commercial appeal with its storyline that it SHOULD'VE done better. sungkyunkwan is headed in much more serious territory (or so it seems), so i understand the ratings on that one, even with micky yoochun as the lead, but kiss??

let's be real.. kim hyunjoong was never really a top idol. dude doesn't have the vocals or "charisma", as they like to call it, on stage to be a top idol, and he definitely don't got it for acting. 8/

i'm not all for ratings either, but.. 8/

waiting for the recap.

I don't get why Baker King Kim Takgu has such high ratings - sure the story is interesting but the script is horrible - they drag out some scenes and the pace is so incredibly slow. What's worse the show has so many loopholes in its plot. I tried watching it but got irritated when they take 15 minutes to play out a scene with really redundant and repetitive dialogue - ugh!

My Girlfriend is a Gumiho is so much more a pleasure to watch.

The drama watchers in S. Korea really have a very different taste and appetite for dramas.

Yes. It seems Korean viewers like plot and lots of plot even if the story gets insane. MGIAG sells itself a lot on its cuteness.

Isn't the plot about the Gumiho being set free into the human world by accident and really wanting to join the human race as per the old gumiho myth with a modern twist? Well at least MGIAG does not have loopholes like Baker King KTG - the characters actions all make sense and have meaning (as per javabeans commentary on Hong's sisters great writing)

TakGu's mom later is very wealthy but i don't get why it took her SO LONG to find him - she could have just hired some Private Investigator to track him down with the money she has. And also his dad - he saw him at the bakery and the dad saw pics of TakGu as a grown up before that but couldn't recognise him just because he had flour on his face? Ughhhh - that irritates me like mad - the show somehow mocks us audience - I feel like they are insulting our intelligence as viewers.

oh so sad for playful kiss!!!!!

i watched it online last next night, to be honest its not that outstanding.the look of the drama is ok, the cast looks pretty but there is too much goong vibe going on and even the teddy bear is there! the trademark of the goong series!!! cant they find other non human things to "represent" the drama?

my name is kim sam soon -pig
goong -teddy bear
you're beautiful -pig rabbit
my girlfriend is a gumiho -giant chicken leg

maybe the ratings is not that much because most of the viewers already knows the storylines so others tend to watch dramas with new and fresh storylines like MGIAG.

well, i still hope they could catch up regarding the ratings so they would not be cut off.

im still trying optimistic that they can bring something more in the drama now that premise was already established.

will stick to this drama for a while to see if the improve.

here's to hoping!

KHJ is a singer not an actor, he was a hit in BOF coz his character complemented the other F4 characters, but he is no Lee Minho, just as LMH can not sing and dance the way KHJ can.

LMH latest drama and performance (like the previous one) were mediocre too and the rating of his drama (although better than PK) was a little disappointing when you think on the way the actor and the drama were so overhyped before airing (even PP did better at the last episodes)

I disagree. LMH's performance in BOF was good and he improved in PT.There were 3 good dramas being shown at the same time. PT did not have an interesting plot and the script was not great, thus the ratings.

I even watched the Jap ver. [which i found rather disappointing XD] so when I heard they're doing a Korean ver. I'm not about to let it pass.. I watched the first ep - w/out subs!! (^^,) I know the story (by heart ~lolz) so, subs or no subs I need to watch it.. and I like what I've seen so far.. it sucks to see it didn't do very well in terms of rating, but I hope it picks up in the coming episodes (^^,) ~ I'm also looking forward to the recaps.. 加油! 加油!

this makes me speechless...not only the ratings but the episode also....the beginning is one of the important scenes in the anime where the male lead actually, really kisses the female lead(she was sleeping actually in a garden) with feelings unlike their first kiss. the girl senses it but thinks it's just a dream...but the PD made a big mistake in putting that scene as the beginning itself....and i must agree the first epi is really boring...what's with all the dream sequences?? especially the ballet dance one...it all seemed so out of place...also the side characters took lot of screen place rather than KHJ....but 3.5%?@!...aargh i've seen many openings worst than this...i think this is the lowest rating for a first episode ever....what's happening with Korean ppl??the most anticipated shows S scandal and playful kiss getting the worst ratings....by the way totally out of the topic...S Scandal seems very much promising than playful kiss...and micky yoochun is doing a great job even though it's his debut in kdrama...hope the ratings improve for it since it doesn't have a strong competitor like Baker king...

I admit I'm surprise.
I kinda expected it to pull a higher number, not first, second or third just a decent number for ratings but damn that was low.
I see why as well.
it could be this drama has been HIGHLY publicized & acting is a whole different thing. Acting isn't singing (obviously) & you gotta admit KHJ doesn't have that big of acting background. Let's be honest only reason why he got the role in BFF is because they took notice of him from WGM & in BFF he wasn't that great. There were times when he was just "uuuhh" in other words he was just plain but it's to be expected considering it's his first big acting gig, so for PK viewers were just probably didn't have high hopes for his acting.
Plus it's going against My Girlfriend is a Gumiho which ppl love & has already aired.
It's okay in time PK will pick up.

Wow, some people are harsh! ><

I was as shocked as everyone else with the rating, but i know for sure that it was pure entertainment for me! I have to admit that at first, i had intended to watch this drama because i was a Triple S (and because i was familiar with the TW version), but after watching the first episode-- JSM just shines!! It might be a bit too early to say anything actually~~ but really, she's adorable and so fitted to play Oh Hani. I actually think KHJ is doing well in Baek Seungjo's shoes as well. His character is naturally expressionless, indifferent and unmoved by his surroundings because of his genius self. It's far too early to critique KHJ's acting because he hardly had any screen time, let alone lines. It's just saddening that his two main roles so far has been remakes, so people will always compare. But watch with an open mind and i'm sure you'll enjoy it more! I can't wait for all the character dissection and plot analysis (although we know the general plot already from the manga, this rendition is allowed to have its own spin as well ^^).

The only thing i find funky about PK is the cg so far.XD
PK fighting!

I got to admit after watching the 1st ep today..it was totally B O R I N G!! Why did they put so many dream sequences?? and the pacing was so S L O WWWW.... zzzzzzzzzzz have to fast forward a lot...

In fairness, KHJ did not have many scenes in the 1st ep and when he did show, he was not required to act/speak at all..

The 1st ep was owned by JSM, and for a newcomer, she acted ok, charisma was there but the timing I think is a little bit off.

What bugs me is Lee Tae Seong's hairdo? I think its an overkill!! I think with his experience, he can act a dorky character without resorting to that funny old greasy do.

The drama has a lot of Goong vibes - teddy bear and the father actor is the same. Its been such a long time it was shown but I think its not good to associate with something as classic as that drama.. too good memories for a lot of people. I hope the production team will have more sense not to refer to it a lot and the resemblance between YEH and JSM.

The forthcoming episodes seems a lot better though based on the preview. And I think its not too premature to say that KHJ has improved a lot based on those previews, he was allowed to show more expressions and interact with JSM in a lot of scenes.

i think it's still too early to tell, hopefully things will pick up soon, it's also too early to judge if KHJ has delivered or not, we'll need at least 1 or 2 more episodes before conclusion, and to be fair, his role was supposed to be like that, cool and aloof and man of few words, i actually thought he's a good fit for this role, considering the fact that he's pretty much like this in real life

Let's see....:)

There's so much that one can blame - wrong timing, strong competitors etc, but the bottom line is if it can't work, it won't work no matter what.

From what i read in the other comments, seems like the first episode was a total blah.
Although it might improve in the upcoming episodes, I must say that they're making a huge mistake. The 1st episode is always the most important in terms of pulling the audience in and making them feel that watching the drama is worth their time. To have such a dismal start is just handing the icing to the cake already owned by baker king & girlfriend is gumiho.

I don't think this drama is demoralizing for girls . I watched the anime so I know the storyline . The male lead is a cold boy who doesn't know how to enjoy life . The female lead (whatever her name is , there are so many adaptations ) helps him open up and enjoy life . Yes she is stupid but with his influence she aims to be a nurse and with hardwork succeed in it . They both help each other in a good way and I think the story gives you the image that even if they are very different they complete each other :)

By the way I haven't watched any of the drama versions yet . I'm just defending the story =))

I don't know the source, but I have to say that from the advance info and the trailers, I was very uninterested in the story. So I can understand the low ratings...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but from what I've heard there doesn't seem to be an actual plot at all. Not so popular girl crushes on a really popular aloof guy and eventually gets him? Possibly they have to move in together at some point? Ah ze drama!!!!

Yeah, I concede that many dramas have less than exciting plots when you sum them up like that. It really all depends on the execution. But for me, most often there is *some* plot point that makes me think "this might be interesting, if done the right way".

Like "straight man pretends to be gay in order to move in with woman". Yeah, summed up like that it isn't thrilling either, but I can see where it might be an actual story. (I actually put off watching Personal Taste for quite a while because the plot seemed unattractive to me, though, so. *g* Yeah, I am a bit wary... or you might say picky. *g*)

But this? I'm sure there's more to the drama than what my summary implies, but the thing is that there was no sign of that anywhere in the promotional material. It looks like another high school love story, period. Interchangable with so many others...

But okay, maybe they were depending on the fact the source material is so well-known and successful. (If so, looks like they shouldn't have...)

This is all about the writer/Director, I'm surprise it started at a low rate but after watching the first episode I expected it to stay there, terrible storyline. I have to go back to my favorite quote from On Air, with a great script you never have a bad actor and the proof is in the pudding with this drama. Sad, I think it could have been a good drama even great if the director team up with the Hong Sisters. This is a bad remake of Goong then the great story of ISWAK. Oh well, I not that disappointed I already stated that I didn’t think K-drama was ready to pull off what need to bring this story to live. I'm just thankful that I lived to watch ‘Giant and Gumiho the girl fox and My Gumiho Girlfriend, because I was on serious Life support with Three sister, My Daring Woman and so many more this year!!!

Boring is all I can say about the first epi. Both leads were not appealing, the usually funny endearing sidekicks were annoying, the usually OTP mean girl was not even fun to hate, storyline was blah...half of the epi were made up of..yawn, not funny made-up stuff. Thinking back to similar dramas, YEH in Goong and LMH in BOF already got me hooked from the moment they first appeared onscreen and to think both were the first dramas I've ever seen them in. So, in conclusion - will probably give this a miss.

Yeah but you can't blame KHJ for it this time. His acting isn't as bad as what hey did to the opening. I have to ask, WTF are they doing to the goddamn plot?

It's like, "When Korean adaptations go wrong".

I think they were trying not to be like the other television versions and took it waaaay too far. The comedy is way overboard, the opening (as I previously stated) is bullshit and took way too long, and motorcycle scene with MJ music and clichéd gang was not need.

From watching episode one I was thinking that Itazura na Kiss (drama not anime) would be more enjoyable to sit through.
