Playful Kiss makes a dismal premiere (ouch!)
by javabeans
OUCHHHHH. Even for those who don’t put much stock in drama ratings, this has to hurt: Playful Kiss premiered today with a painfully low rating, 3.5%. That’s even lower than the flop it replaced, Road No. 1, which ended on an already low 5.3%.
Unsurprisingly, competitor KBS Baker King Kim Tak-gu held a distant lead with 44%. SBS’s My Girlfriend Is a Gumiho stayed in second place with an 11.9%.
As in any discussion of ratings, please note that I make no judgments on quality of content. I’m still eager to dive in and watch the drama, and my anticipation of its story and appeal remain undiminished. It’s just that, 3.5%, well… that’s harsh, man. I wonder if rerun numbers on the weekend will be appreciably better.
To be honest, I was expecting Kiss to premiere in third place, but I thought it would be a lot closer than that. Perhaps idol power is not what it once was — or maybe it never had quite the pull that the media hyped it to have, with similarly low numbers for the anticipated Sungkyunkwan Scandal (6.3%) on Monday.
(I know you’re probably eager to talk about the episode, so can I just ask that you keep the BIG spoilers out of it? I’m looking forward to watching the premiere and would love to let plot surprises have their intended effect.)

i already tried to keep myself from watching the long previews so that it wouldn't spoil the episode for me, but seriously, it was a really slow episode. very reminiscent of goong (well we have the same director), though goong's first epi was much better in my opinion.
Playful kiss epi 1 -- mediocre acting plus a lackluster plot and some very childish scenes filmed at crawling speed.
i guess the ratings say it all.

oh boy! it's bad enough when you're just in a single digit but below 4%... that's just sad. and how can you compete with 2 dramas that already have huge fan bases and their actors can really act, too! bad move pitting it against Takgu & Gumiho GF!

Eeee. 3.5% that is so....harsh *shaking head in hand*
but i must admit i was a bit disappointed with the first episode having a lot of those silly imaginations which were funny in their own way but it was more like bread and butter and Not enough Jam, if u know what i mean..sorry for using food analogy to compare PK episode too, i'm right now eating sandwich that doesn't have enough jam and it isn't very appetizing.
But still, 3.5% that is so uncool...! I mean, yes first episode was a bit disappointing *to me that is* but it did not deserve such a low viewers rate.
Some parts were most note worthy it just didn't really grab ur whole attention, i found myself browsing the internet whilst watching PK .. I hope episode 2 fares better then the first. Good Luck to them!!

Saw ep 1 and im not sold, but im still giving it a chance to win me over..
SADLY, the lead girl reminded me of Yoon Eun Hye the entire episode!! seriously?! i dont know if that's a good or bad thing for others, but for me it isn't.. Goong is still very much Fresh in my memories, so i cannot help but compare.. After all these months over the past year, I've literally STOPPED watching any drama that is featured in Highschool.. so im kinda iffy about this drama.. Never got the chance to see the anime OR the T-version..
anyways, like i said i'll give it another try on episode 2.. then we'll see!

This is a huge shock to me! I was expecting at least 14% and then for it to balloon up to the 20s. But then I forgot about Baker Kim Tak-gu (I really need to check out what this drama is all out!). I don't know how they are going to bring themselves up from 3.5%. Maybe MBC's Wed-Thurs timeslot really IS cursed!!
even if the viewers had already loved the taiwanese version- loving a recent, previous version didn't stop BOF from raking all those ratings. Maybe it was the combined power of the f4??

I agree! I've only watched like half of it so far and needed to take a break. I'm liking the music so far and some of the quirky touches, but the long imagination sequence in the beginning (which was like 3-4 minutes long) was torture. I think that is probably what killed the ratings. People turned on Playful Kiss and the first thing they see is that slow dream sequence- of course they're going to change the channel to something else more interesting- like a commercial. and when they return, it was probably another dream sequence.
i do like the teacher scenes in this one more than ISWAK, though.
and I also realized in the first 10 minutes showed off Ha Ni too much as a talented girl. Now she is just like any other high school female student in a kdrama rather than the super-underdog. I'd rather they do a reveal later on or something.

I thought it was cute and fluffy... like cotton candy. It will never be one of those shows that I rush home to see, and I'll probably forget about it after the series is over. But it was a pleasant waste of time, and it had pretty colors.
I don't think that any of the actors/actresses had been beaten with the ugly stick at all. I'm not saying they were all attractive, but none of them were ugly.
I didn't like the Taiwanese version, I couldn't bring myself to watch the Japanese version, but this I could sit through without pain.

Oh Hani is quite cute and adorable so far. It's still the first episode & it may be unfair to judge KHJ's acting. But, if he keeps acting with the same expression, he could be the reason that the show receives such a low rating. Sorry to KHJ's fans & hate to say this. But, he should retire from acting if he is not going to improve his acting throughout this series.

I expected my biggest beef to be with KHJ's acting, but I actually found him okay in the first episode - except for the fact that it took him 30 minutes to speak, but I'm guessing that wasn't in his control.
Not loving the directing or the music... and it was so incredibly BORING... and given the story, it really shouldn't be.
I agree with others who said it reminded them of Goong and not in a good way... the fact that the lead actress is so much like YEH blurs the lines too much and instead of reprising the charm of Goong you simply feel that you've seen this already
I told myself I wouldn't compare it to the TW version, which I loved, but I can't help it I guess. We'll see if the second episode improves at all.

Wow, all the hate is surprising.
I'm unfamiliar with all the actors and actresses and with the story itself (though I have watched some episodes of the anime before) but I actually found the first episode to be entertaining enough for me to look forward to the next one.
And I agree with whoever said it really remind you of Goong, especially because the main lead acts a bit like YEH and there were teddy bears at the end of the episode.
I won't say anything about the acting because I don't know how to judge them and because I actually dug their characters.
Anyways, I guess I will be one of the few people who will continue to watch this. ^^

But seriously pple should give this drama a chance, maybe ratings will pick up later?
I actually just started watching Gumiho and I didnt like the fantasy elements. I am also not into Lee Seung Gi, so maybe there are others out there like me and this drama still has a chance.

KBS has been pretty much dominating the Wed-Thurs slot since last year starting with Iris, Chuno, Cinderella's Sister, and now Baker King. I wonder if Rain's Fugitive will continue the KBS winning streak.

Wow that's so low. I guess it aired at the wrong time! I myself choose to watch Tak Gu and leave PK and MGIAG later to watch. I'm just so addicted with the Baker drama.
I haven't watched any other adaptation so the first episode is ok to me. The imagination sequences are a bit long though. I hope ep 2 will be better. HJL is still a bit awkward, esp the gangster imagination scene, but I'm expecting a better performance once the character he's portraying interact more with Hani.

My mother and I have seen the Chinese edition and the female lead was perfect - she looked idiotic while still endearing.
Personally I prefer watching Gumiho first, Tak Gu second and this one third since I don't expect any miracles in KHJ's acting. Plus Tak Gu's ending soon so the hype level and the intensity level of that show will be high. Lastly, I'm expecting most of the watchers right now are from the older age groups who prefers overkill plots that tame ones.

I think the biggest problem is that most of the people watching dramas aren't attracted to this kind of high-school romance dramas (certainly my parents would poo-poo it almost immediately), and the younger fanbase would just watch it online.
That said, I feel really sorry for them. 3.5% is shockingly low. Haven't watched it, but am still planning to, since the trailers looked pretty appealing. Hope it does better, but doubt it, cos I think MGIaG has a pretty loyal and solid fanbase, and so does Baker King (and since BK is finishing soon, doubt the fanbase is about to switch teams anytime).

Okay, just watched the first episode. I am assuming that this show's director cannot and has never been able to direct his way out of a paper bag.
I will wait to post my thoughts on the actual recap.
The low numbers are still surprising. On the other hand, imagine if it had premiered at 7 or 8% and then slipped to 3% for the second episode? KHJ would have been tarred and feathered for life, even though it is the director who should be made to walk the plank.

Thanks for pointing that out, hjkomo. I didn't know who the director was, but this first ep. felt like something put together by a first-year film student who got into film school because daddy had money to waste on his no-talent son and wanted him on some kind of a "career path."
SPOILER-ISH below:
How odd that this is the same man who did Return of Iljimae. He did bring that kind of surreal, fantastic element with moody undertones to this, so maybe the dude just hadn't clued into what teen romance shows are all about.

Some people think MGIG rating drop with JB posting it's rating 11% for last night compared to last week (about 14%)
MGIG's rating actually doesnt change much.
last week Thursday rating:
AGB Nielsen
1- Baker King, Kim Tak Goo [KBS] = 41.9%
11- My Girlfriend is a Gumiho [SBS] = 11.2%
* Road Number One [MBC] = 5.3%
TNS Media
1- Baker King, Kim Tak Goo [KBS] = 44.7%
8- My Girlfriend is a Gumiho [SBS] = 14.2%
--------------------------------------------------------
Last night rating
AGB Nielsen
1- Baker King, Kim Tak Goo [KBS] = 44.0%
10- My Girlfriend is a Gumiho [SBS] = 11.9%
* Playful Kiss [MBC] = 3.5%
TNS Media
1- Baker King, Kim Tak Goo [KBS] = 45.8%
9- My Girlfriend is a Gumiho [SBS] = 13.4%
* Playful Kiss [MBC] = not in top 20
--------------------------------------------------------
(rating for MGIG slightly increase for AGB, slightly decrease for TNS)
i agree, some people should stop thinking idols can bring in higher rating.
Personal Taste was a trendy drama yet it managed to give MBC a good 2digits rating for wed-thurs timeslot which MBC has been getting 1digit for a long time already
some people said BOF was popular because of KHJ. i think u should rethink about that.
honestly, if LMH was casted in this, PK could at least maintain Road Number 1 rating before that. too bad, this role can typecast him.

it's sad, but i have to agree with the low ratings. the cast is pretty good - we've definitely seen kim hyun joong do well in boys over flowers, and jung so min's acting was alright in bad boy (she does angry pretty well). but the first episode was just downright PAINFUL to watch.
it started with a kiss, the taiwanese version, was the first drama i ever watched. and i've been hooked ever since. so in terms of potential, it could definitely be amazing. i mean, the taiwanese drama milked the storyline for all it was worth, came out with 40 hours worth of show, and did pretty damn well.
to be honest, i was looking forward to 'playful kiss,' just because i usually like korean dramas better than chinese or japanese ones. but then, watching it .... ZIP. nothing. the characters have no chemistry, the scenes don't connect, the entire vibe of the drama is awkward. it didn't keep me at the edge of my seat; i had no urge to watch on.
for ruining a perfectly good plotline and a perfectly fine cast, i guess i'm kinda mad at the PD. and i do hope they do better in the future, but this is the end of the road for me and this drama. farewell, show.

From what I recall about the storyline is that the first episode where everything kinda needs to be set up is going to be kinda boring. I think ISWAK it was the same thing for me. Ep 1 was kind blah but necessary. So that, on top of the other reasons (strong previously running drama, school etc)... and it's just been such a horrible time slot for MBC. I hope that they can improve from that. 3.5% is really really low.

ISWAK...was such a boring watch in the first few episodes...I was tempted to just pass, but I had heard good stuff and stuck with it.
You've got solid dramas on, and midway...not too many people will be pulling out at this point..also for some it's just another remake of something thats been seen before. Then you add in that it's started when there is a possible strike pending...
All of which will be laid at KJH door if the drama doesnt do well...
I watched the first episode...raw..the first few minutes reminded me of GDragon's Butterfly.

The issue is that the main character has very forced and ridiculous facial expressions- she just doesn't know how to express shyness or embarrassment- she bites and blows her cheeks and its so ugly and annoying...she's not that good of an actress bottomline- kim hyung joons role has been done way too much- and there's moments that his facial expressions or reactions are stupid and senseless because its like hes trying so hard to be this mysterious cold kinda of a guy and sometimes it just doesnt work- like the fact that he doesnt address the comments of the leader of the popular girl it was too much-
overall kim hyung joons character got better by the end when he actually started talking and his acting wasnt as bad as in the beginning... the main girl is a disaster shes not ugly but if she doesnt stop with her ridiculous facial expressions ima catch a plane to korea and punch her in her face... the first episode is always a little boring0 the scene at the beginning was too long... over all im still looking forward to it getting better and im gonna see this through cause i have to support khj...

Wow you'd think at LEAST KHJ/SS501's die-hard fans alone would be able to pull in more ratings than 3.5%.. what happened? The only reasoning I can think of behind such low ratings is that this drama will ONLY appeal to teens who would rather watch it on their computers on their own time rather than watching it on TV..

ISWAK sucked big time and I hated the stupid acting and ending.I have absolutely no idea how anyone could possibly like Ariel Lin.
After having said that I am not praising PK to the skies but the ratings...ouch double ouch.
I will be watching it as I find most KD adaptations more enjoyable to watch.Korean dramas are entertaining.Besides it's only the 1st ep and from my observations...most KD don't do ep 1-4 well and then the story gets better as the characters get fleshed out.
So....if you don't like it don't watch.BOF and YAB did well overseas and who's to say this won't.Not all of us live in Korea :-)
