Playful Kiss makes a dismal premiere (ouch!)
by javabeans
OUCHHHHH. Even for those who don’t put much stock in drama ratings, this has to hurt: Playful Kiss premiered today with a painfully low rating, 3.5%. That’s even lower than the flop it replaced, Road No. 1, which ended on an already low 5.3%.
Unsurprisingly, competitor KBS Baker King Kim Tak-gu held a distant lead with 44%. SBS’s My Girlfriend Is a Gumiho stayed in second place with an 11.9%.
As in any discussion of ratings, please note that I make no judgments on quality of content. I’m still eager to dive in and watch the drama, and my anticipation of its story and appeal remain undiminished. It’s just that, 3.5%, well… that’s harsh, man. I wonder if rerun numbers on the weekend will be appreciably better.
To be honest, I was expecting Kiss to premiere in third place, but I thought it would be a lot closer than that. Perhaps idol power is not what it once was — or maybe it never had quite the pull that the media hyped it to have, with similarly low numbers for the anticipated Sungkyunkwan Scandal (6.3%) on Monday.
(I know you’re probably eager to talk about the episode, so can I just ask that you keep the BIG spoilers out of it? I’m looking forward to watching the premiere and would love to let plot surprises have their intended effect.)

'idol-actor' dramas that done well (I guess these two can be called idol-actor since they are singer in a first place) are Full House (Rain),Shining Inheritance and MGIAG (Lee Seung Gi)..I don't know who else did good on both singing and acting..for now,I just recall these two..

"but YEH and Eugene are now full time actresses and not anymore “idols” so to speak"
-------------------------------------
Yeah that's true that YEH is a fulltime actress now, but she used to be an idol who ventured into acting and is credited in korea as the girl who has broken the prejudice towards singer turned actresses and is also the only idol turned actress to win both the Grimme Best Actress Award and the coveted Best Actress for Baeksang Award.
Even Lee Jin of F.I.N.K.L thanked her during one of her interviews:
Lee Jin (Finkl), the singer turned actress, who was starring in her official drama "The King and I" has expressed her gratitude for "Coffee Prince" star, Yoon EunHye.
"I am very thankful to YEH for breaking the preconception and biased views on singers who have turned to acting.
I think many people are forgetting to give credit to successful singer turned actors and actresses who made it possible and easier for this new generation of idols to venture into acting. I think that's the reason why many idols today fail making the transistion, because unlike their seniors, they didn't go through many hardships, to earn their spot in the acting biz. Idols today have it way easier than the idols from before.

Thank God no one is watching this drama. "Playful Kiss". What a joke to be honest. This type of drama is good for 12 year olds but why would any adult be interested in it. I thought it would get great ratings like Boys before Flowers(another stupid drama) but thankfully no one is wanting to watch it. The studios should grow up to be honest.

"Does anyone know if “idol-actor” dramas have ever done well? "
Generally, no (kids watch online or reruns.) So when a show with very young actors succeeds, that actor will get recognized big time. Nobody expected Boys over Flowers or Goong to become mini-phenoms, or Shining Inheritance to turn into a national drama.
I suspected that Playful Kiss would debut around the 5% Gumiho's reached status as a buzz netizen hit, and now you're asking the kids to put off watching the next episode of Gumiho to try out Playfull Kiss? Yeah, that wasn't happening. As soon as Gumiho crossed the 15% threshhold, there was almost no audience left.
PK needs great buzz, but even so, the show is going to struggle to get Tamra-level ratings.

I feel sorry for the cast, but high school dramas are overated esp. one that is a remake. I am glad Korean audience are more discerning . I saw ep 1. without eng sub so I don't know what was said, still, i smiled and was happy through out the show. some parts were just half a beat slow and I don't like the "Elvis hair guy", should have picked a cuter guy to be the rival. Love the scenery, imaginaries, abd the whole casts. KHJ had improved with his expressions, like in the almost fight scene. Ep 1 he had little lines, and were mainly in someone's dreams looking dreamy. He did what he was directed. Overall, I'm happy with it and I smiled alot watching. Let's see a few more eps before we label who is good/bad.

The "Elvis hair guy" isn't really intended to be a serious love rival, actually.. He's mostly comedic relief in the original manga, so I'm not surprised with their casting choice. The guy's really not bad-looking in real life, though. :)

I think I know why Playful Kiss had such low ratings. i mean I knew that the ratings would not be double digits right away but I thought it would at least be 8%.
I think the reason why the ratings is so low is because the drama really has no originality. PD Hwang has pretty much almost turned Jung So Min into a a Yoon Eun Hye replica like her hairstyle, mannerisms and etc reminds me so much of YEH in Goong (i think what made Goong such a hit is because it was original). Another thing is the bears and other resemblance stuff from Goong. As a viewer, I find it rather annoying. Cause although Playful Kiss is a remake, I still want it to make it's own mark that makes it different and will keep me interested. It was so frustrating to watch.
Kim Hyun Joong is just not mean enough. I wonder what his boss Bae Yong Joon do about this situation.
I hope they will fix that problem and make it more unique.

Yup in Korea it's very different. I am kind of glad that it is that way cause lately almost all programs and series are invaded by idols. I remember during Rain, Yoon Eun Hye, Eugene, Jung Ryeo Won and Sung Yuri's time when it was way harder to become a singer-turned actor and respectable ones at that...they really worked hard to earn it. I feel the new generation of idols also have to pay their dues just like their seniors.
Nowadays, it seems any idols with good looks can just become actors so easily.

Wow, this has got to be the biggest surprise since World's Within with Song Hye Kyo and Hyun Bin pulled in less than 6% ratings consistently.
I think this is a perfect example of how different the tastes vary from Korean viewers to International viewers. I mean the show has had heaps of buzz on most k-pop blogs and it even had more than 200 comments on koreandrama.org before a single episode aired!!
So what is the reason for such a low rating? Is it the competition? Is it because it's a remake? BoF was a remake too and rated quite well. Isn't the main actress pretty enough? Once again, BoF didn't have a pretty main actress either. I'm dying for the recap to find out why. But yeah, OUCH! pretty much sums it up.

@Kobe,
"So what is the reason for such a low rating? Is it the competition? "
1) One show is doing 45 ratings. The other show just did 11 points. There's virtually no viewers left.
2) Playful Kiss's main audience is the exact same audience that is watching Gumiho. Gumiho works as counterprogramming against Baker King, which hits most of the housewives. But, Playfull Kiss has no such niche. Once Gumiho start doing 15s, there's nobody left.
3) MBC has had one show flop after another in its Wednesday/Thursday slot. You gotta go back to Beethoven Virus to find a show that succeeded.
4) Neither Kim Hyung Joon nor Jung So Min will appeal to the 30+ viewing crowd.

Perhaps this had a dismal start because if it's viewer base had watched the original Taiwanese ISWAK version ..... where the first few eppies were quite non-events (at least they were, for me) and even somewhat bimbotic.
So perhaps ... the feel might be it's not like anyone's missing much if they tuned in somewhere midway.

Maybe ISWAK was not heavily promoted in Korea itself? I remember BOF having the hell promoted out of it.
Maybe the low ratings of Road affected it?

Well. I'm not surprised Playful Kiss came in their or even had low ratings. I was being hopeful. But they have some INTENSE competition. Tak Gu is just an excellent drama plus the fact it has drawn in such a huge amount of watchers - Playful Kiss didn't have a chance at taking away any of those viewers. The last ten episodes have been picking up the pace in Tak Gu too which would only make the viewers want to keep watching Tak Gu.
Then you have MGIAG. Dear lord that is such a cute, humorous drama! It's doing well and pulling in a strong fan base as well. Honestly I'm so torn between which drama to watch first: Tak Gu or MGIAG. Hahaha.
I haven't seen Playful Kiss yet. I'm going to check it out later. I'm hopeful that it just has a slow start. We'll see.

This drama is competing against SS and MGIAG. At least, on the memory/impression front. And, those two dramas definitely leave an imprint in the viewer's memory, even after the episode has ended.
Unfortunately, I don't see anything, in this drama, to leave a lasting impression. I watched it, but I can't tell you much about it. It's already faded from memory. And, I also found it boring.

What's surprised me though, off the idol drama, I'm starting to fall for S-scandal, the set up was beautiful-refreshing and the main guy is getting better. I'll give PK a chance, ep2 preview looks better.
The stiff KHJ fighting!
