Sung Yuri signs on to indie film project
by javabeans
One year after her last film project Rabbit and Lizard (which was also her film debut), Sung Yuri is taking the lead in another movie, Noona (or Older Sister).
She plays an older sister in a parentless family and works in a school cafeteria. Her character is tough and lives a hard life; she is burdened by the weight of enduring, and hope is difficult to find in her miserable life. She’s also a sufferer of domestic violence, and the film will include scenes of her being beaten around. As such, this role will require Sung to delve deep and show strong character acting.
Sung said, “People strongly advised me to take a bright, popular drama, but I’ll return to popular projects after I’ve shown a new side to my acting in this one.” She explained wanting to try a character she hadn’t portrayed before, and despite some worries of her people, she decided on this project because she didn’t want to only consider the project’s commercial success.
Noona begins filming on August 30, and afterward Sung plans to return to dramas sometime early next year.
This is probably a good move for Sung if she’s serious about developing her acting skills, and it seems she is. She had a particularly rough time of it when she transitioned from being a pop idol to an actress, and weathered a few really harsh storms in her early acting career. I still find her acting pretty flat, but there’s no doubt she’s improved, and it’s nice to hear her talking about things other than commercial success. Then again, she also has the luxury of being able to sign on to a commercial vehicle at the drop of a hat, which must help.

She's actually recapped HGD, so yes, she has watched it.

It's always nice to see actors/actresses turning aside more "popular" projects for chances not only to improve their own acting, but also boost the visibility of some really great cinema.

its refreshing to see mainstream actors jumping onto the indie bandwagon. It tells me to respect them even more. Maybe its the idea of them not totally sucked into the popularity/money business but more into honing the craft which is more impt, to me at least.
There are a number of actors I know who happen to be unpopular but in my opinion deserves every bit of respect for simply doing what they love and doing it best. Money and fame isn't everything, ya know...
adios

I love her. I really admire her beauty. Every time i look at her it always gives me this feeling like she's just came down from the heavens. hahah
Sung Yuri had came a long way. I can see why she's doing this. Her last project was not that greatly recieved but it did solidfy her as an actress. Before people always labeled her as pop starlet turn actor.
She's older now, so she wants to broaden her acting range more. She knows she's not a great actress but she's learning. Go yuri!

While i am happy she is in a movie, it also means that i won't get to see it since not all k-movies get release where i am , not even as DVDs. Been some time now for news on her next drama.
Does she really has the luxury of getting into commercial vehicle at the drop of a hat?? I always thought that there is great competitions for lead drama roles....
