Moon Geun-young makes theater debut in Closer

“Korea’s Little Sister” Moon Geun-young is pairing up with Eom Ki-joon (Job Well Done) in the stage play Closer, which is the play written by Patrick Marber that was a hit when it first opened in London in 1997. It went on to be translated into 30 languages and performed in 100 cities, and was adapted into a film starring Clive Owen, Natalie Portman, Jude Law, and Julia Roberts.

Moon Geun-young will play the part of Alice (which is double-cast with Shin Da-eun), which was Natalie Portman’s role in the 2004 film. The character is a stripper who becomes romantically involved with Dan, played by Jude Law in the film and to be portrayed by Eom Ki-joon in this production. (The entire play follows the intertwining relationships of the four leads and can be seen as a relationship study about modern love.)

Moon recently wrapped up the melodrama Cinderella’s Sister, while Eom Ki-joon — who recently named Moon as his ideal woman on a variety program — plays a psycho criminal in the just-released Demolished Man.

I like seeing screen actors broaden their horizons on the stage, and the vast majority feel that the experience helps them grow as actors. Kudos to Moon for giving it a try, when at 23 she’s already considered one of the best actresses around (and certainly the best of her generation). Eom Ki-joon, you may know, started out on the stage as a musical actor.

Closer runs as part of the “I Like the Stage” Play Festival, which raised its curtain on July 6, and is its second offering. It will run for two months beginning in August. The festival’s opening play was Fool For Love, which starred Kim Hyo-jin, Kim Jung-hwa, Han Jung-soo, and Park Gun-hyung.

Interesting... she is really taking roles now that are very mature and far from her innocent and young image..

Good for her to breakout from that.. all the best for her!

Moon Geun-Young seriously earns my respect every time I see her on screen or in the news. If it's not about her charity work it's about her acting or how she's expanding her image and abilities.

Damn, if these two starred in a screen adaptation I'd be all over that. As it stands, I can't exactly justify flying to Korea to see it, despite this story being one of my all-time favorites.

girlfriday, can't you expense your trip to dramabeans.com? Your readers have a huge demand to read a first-hand basis performance review. ;)

2 things come to my mind:

1) Moon can't possibly go to the extend Portman did, can she? No way, not on a Korean open theatre, no way... or yes way?...

2) Interesting that both Portman and Moon both debuted when they were young and their acting talents were recognized very early by many; both took up this challenging role, both constantly stricking for break-throughs - well done young ladies!

In mad love with Eom Ki-joon after watching The World They Live In! And since I can't see the play, I'll settle by watching the 2004 movie, which I'd also never seen. Does the movie do the story justice?

Would lurrrve to watch this play again. Why can't I go to Korea? :(
Uhm Ki Joon & Moon Geun Young have certainly chosen a good project. I hope the other two actors cast will also do it justice.

I wonder if she'll be doing the couch-straddling bit...
Kudos to MGY for challenging herself as an actress. :)

“Where is this ‘love’? I can’t see it, I can’t touch it, I can’t feel it. I can hear it. I can hear some words, but I can’t do anything with your easy words.”

don't know who the actor is (but i'm sure i will investigate now) but that photo made me think for a moment it was our Best Friend with a Cravat from Personal Taste!

Closer, eh? Do they have the cyber sex chat in the theatre version, or was that just used for the film? hehe.

Joking aside, good luck to Moon for giving this a shot, although I was looking forward to seeing what she does next on screen. I have to wait a few months for that answer now. Ah well!

@pabo: I'm with you on that one, lol.

NO WAY. This would be amazing, but can't they adapt it in cinema form instead so the rest of us can enjoy it?

It'll be interesting to see whether MGY will be able to pull off this role - I think she'll do fine, after all, Natalie Portman is also considered one of the best of her generation. I think the thing keeping me from being able to see MGY as Alice is her tomboy-ish image from Cinderella's Sister, though

What a fine actress MGY has become. To be flexing her acting muscles with a play like Closer is very very admirable. I'm sure she'll give it justice. It was eons ago when Closer first opened in London. Did it really start life at the National? I thought it was at the Lyric in Hammersmith? My memory is hazy now. Anyhow, I wish I had seen the play then before seeing the film. I loved the film so much I even ended up buying the dvd when it came out. It would be amazing to witness MGY(and Eom Ki Joon actually) in this play. Even with my limited Korean I still would be happy to watch this play.

@20 Christy
I agree. I would love to see this in movie form. Well, actually, I would love to see the stage play, but there's no way I can go to Korea so a movie would be the next best thing. And that pairing? Those actors? Ahhh, two of my favorites. *sighs*

I saw the movie. It was beyond terrible. I can't imagine how the play could be any better.

I'm also a little sceptical of MGY of taking on such a role. I'm not sure if it suits her.

Oh my! =)

Of course, I agree with you #1 and #2 ---- I am glad that Moon Geun Young has a good choice for this AND she seem like she are taking so seriously and become an young adult, oh yea!

Ah! She's really great at acting from that drama "Cinderella's Sister", mm.

FIGHTING!

I thought Closer was a fine movie after all Natalie Portman's Alice got her an Oscar nom and it'll be interesting Moon Geun Young take on this role but I think she'll pull it off.

Eom Ki-joon named Moon Geun-young as his ideal woman? I hope he's just being polite. Imagine if they were both 10 years younger (Eom is now 37 vs. Moon's 23), I would have suspected him of paedophilic inclinations xD
