World Cup pre-empts SBS’s prime-time scheduling

It’s World Cup season, and SBS is the station with the broadcasting rights, which means that pretty much ALL of its (prime-time) programming will be affected — meaning, pre-empted for soccer coverage.

The World Cup begins Friday, June 11, and the final is scheduled for Sunday, July 11. (Here’s the full schedule.) Until the Round of 16, three games will take place daily, and in addition, SBS will be broadcasting highlight specials in the evenings. The 8pm news will air an hour earlier at 7, and World Cup coverage will take the place of variety and drama shows.

According to an SBS representative, who qualified that the scheduling could still change, generally speaking they will not show variety or drama programming until the early rounds are over and the Round of 16 commences. After that, once games drop to one daily, they will be able to resume as usual. Programs may be pre-empted for as short as one week or as long as one month.

The dramas affected:
Sat-Sun: Neighbor Enemies, Life Is Beautiful
Mon-Tues: Coffee House, Giant
Wed-Thurs: Bad Guy

That means that beginning this weekend, none of these shows will air for one week. (Some more than that.)

Variety programs:
Sunday Night and Inki Gayo will proceed unaffected.
Strong Heart and Star Couple Show will be pre-empted.

This will be in effect until Tuesday, June 22. That’s when the game times shift a bit and will take place in the early morning or late night, Korean time, so prime-time programs will mostly resume airing as normal. However, weekend dramas Neighbor Enemies and Life Is Beautiful will depend on which teams make it through to the Round of 16, which starts on Saturday, June 26.

The World Cup is something that is mentioned in passing and covered for maybe 5 minutes in the US media and only if there is a huge fight. As a sport soccer(football for everyone else) means little to the average US citizen. It is something to sign your kids up for to get them out of the house on weekends when basketball, football(american) and baseball are not in season. Not putting down the sport, I had fun playing it when I was small. It just has little support here.

I can try to sympathize with the World Cup fans and I hope they have fun, but for crying out loud don't take Coffee House away. That is the only K-drama I am watching right now.

Coffee House is the only drama I'm currently watching but I'm really surprised at the reactions here. I understand that a lot of you care little for football but you have to understand that football/WC is a part of Korean culture. Korea literally puts life on pause for this sporting event, which even if you guys don't care for could at least be more considerate. Also, I have no idea what ratings CH pulls in but WC will have insane view ratings in Korea. So from a cultural, financial point of view it's logical to put SBS dramas on hold. SBS wouldn't put off the WC just for us to watch our CH. Plus, SBS has exclusive rights to showing the WC games....

@ 38 Jane

Thanks for the link. I had no idea Peter Ho was a producer; I've liked him since Starry Starry Night and Love at the Aegean Sea. I was given this link @ http://www.mangafox.com/manga/show_princess/ if this interest you as well.

@ 40 momosan

I remember the massive crowd in '84, and the uproars at Rose Bowl, but I really didn't know who was playing against who back then. I was just a kid during her tomboy phase being a daddy's girl.

There was a fantastic trade pin show in the heart of Chinatown, and I got to meet so many interesting international people there, and I got a lot of souvenir gifts from that show. Those times were really Good Will Games, if you know what I mean.

@ 47 angryparsnip

I'm never gonna hear the end of it if I pass your msg about him as "cute." LOL! I shall, hey, I better butter him up ready for Father's Day. ^____^

England better not cry me a river just b/c Beckham is not in the game. I have to admit, the American broadcast is worst at coveraging the WC but there is always the Spanish or Hong Kong or Viet channels whom are diehard fans w/ better coverage.

Hi5 unni!

@ Lahlita

' I lived in a high-rise and I remember watching the game with my family with the doors to the balcony open, and when we scored a goal, you could hear an entire city of two million people screaming in unison. It is one of my most treasured childhood memories.'

Seriously that's exactly my experience as well, esp when we know THE WORLD is screaming w/ us all! As a kid I just love how it bring the whole, cold city passionately in an event, it's like a 2 wk of crazy party that EVERYBODY is in and having the greatest time!

@ 55 mookie -- Awesome!!! Wasn't it always so amazing when you looked out over the skyline of a city and you could hear millions of people screaming together in joy? Once we got satellite TV, my favorite thing to do during the endless goal celebrations was to flip through all of the international channels that were covering our match. I loved hearing broadcasters replaying our goal in several different languages, and they'd show citizens of other nations cheering for us. Soccer made me love the world as a child.

@ 54 Carinne -- I agree with everyone else; your Dad is totally cute. He's adorable, even. Give him a hug from me too for Father's Day, hey? My father lives overseas, so you'll just have to hug your Dad for those of us who can't hug ours. Carinne-appa is going to be the most hugged-up Daddy this side of a K-drama! :-D

No Coffee House until June 28th?

Now, I feel like crying, just like Ji-won did in Eun-young's office. I may even snort like he did. Pink cheeks and everything.

LOL The World Cup's very cool, so I'll just take the time and allow my anticipation for Coffee House episode 9 to build.

But, still. Waahhh.

@elisa: Don't you think the romantic development between GW and JI is moving a tad too quickly? Somehow, I thought that preview featuring the kiss between JI and GW is meant for the later episodes, with JI's hairstyle like that instead of the next episode.

@ movall
Like you my obsession with PP prevented me from starting another Kdrama. I am now addicted with the PP thread on Soompi's forum page as I have just joined it. Ha! Ha! ( I am sounding like MHR) I also LOVE the World Cup very much. It comes just at the right time indeed! Ha! Ha! again as it is such a strange co-incident that my favourite footballer Fernando Torres of Spain has styled his latest haircut like my favourite actor PSH!
@ Kaedejun
Like you I also think that the WC allows me to return to my daily routine a bit, what with all the obsession with PP watching.
@ aberdeen_angus
You should be proud of your team as I think they have very good players like Mascherano, Aguero and MESSI. I also support Argentina besides Spain.
