World Cup pre-empts SBS’s prime-time scheduling

It’s World Cup season, and SBS is the station with the broadcasting rights, which means that pretty much ALL of its (prime-time) programming will be affected — meaning, pre-empted for soccer coverage.

The World Cup begins Friday, June 11, and the final is scheduled for Sunday, July 11. (Here’s the full schedule.) Until the Round of 16, three games will take place daily, and in addition, SBS will be broadcasting highlight specials in the evenings. The 8pm news will air an hour earlier at 7, and World Cup coverage will take the place of variety and drama shows.

According to an SBS representative, who qualified that the scheduling could still change, generally speaking they will not show variety or drama programming until the early rounds are over and the Round of 16 commences. After that, once games drop to one daily, they will be able to resume as usual. Programs may be pre-empted for as short as one week or as long as one month.

The dramas affected:
Sat-Sun: Neighbor Enemies, Life Is Beautiful
Mon-Tues: Coffee House, Giant
Wed-Thurs: Bad Guy

That means that beginning this weekend, none of these shows will air for one week. (Some more than that.)

Variety programs:
Sunday Night and Inki Gayo will proceed unaffected.
Strong Heart and Star Couple Show will be pre-empted.

This will be in effect until Tuesday, June 22. That’s when the game times shift a bit and will take place in the early morning or late night, Korean time, so prime-time programs will mostly resume airing as normal. However, weekend dramas Neighbor Enemies and Life Is Beautiful will depend on which teams make it through to the Round of 16, which starts on Saturday, June 26.

Nooo! Not Giant and Bad Guy, you *beeeeeeeep*!
I was already warned about Bad Guy but now Giant, too? Whatever will I do next week? As much as I love the WC and am chanting Allez les Bleus all the way, I'm still pretty gutted.

I was watching Ep. 8 of Coffee House the other day, and the parting line told me that the next one doesn't air until the 28th!! Of June! It's like three weeks from now D: And especially with that dreadful cliffhanger at the end Dx

Ughh. I was totally counting on it to get me through finals. Guesss nottt.

dramas and everything else can wait as far as I'm concerned!!! WC is a once in a 4 yr boiling of blood event!!!! we can count w/ both and hands and feet how many times we'll be able to watch it in our lifetimes.. IF we're lucky.

Go Brazil!

And I am bummed!! After watching episode 8 of Coffee House I was already counting the days until episode 9.. but now this!!!! Oh no no no.. this is not good for my kdrama fix..... usually my withdrawal syndrome occurs AFTER a drama has ended.. not during the middle of its broadcast!!

Dr. JB, what is your diagnosis??!! I think this is a new discovery in the kdrama addicts, at least for me.

LOL!

seriously, SBS should build up the excitement carefully over the next 2 weeks so that Coffee House will gain more attention especially after episode 8!!.

Look on the bright side, this will give the dramas extra breathing room for shooting and production. Maybe some of these actors can actually get a full night's rest during filming.

Ye Gods! One week without Bad Guy *and* Coffee House? Meep! TPTB are trying to ruin Bad Guy, aren't they? I mean, I get the football craze (I'm going to watch the games myself ^^) but BG doesn't deserve to be put on hold like that. I mean, a thriller needs the suspense, but a hiatus can kill it. I really hope that doesn't happen.

it's the world cup and it happens once every four years. no reason why dramas should take precedence over a global event of this magnitude.

I haven't started on Bad Guy or Giant, but I NEED MY JIN-SOO-PRESSO fix! (Keke, I just made that up.) Um~ I think I saw the end of Coffee House ep.08 scribble the show will resume on Jun 28. Did anyone else catch that?

I tell ya, go watch Summer's Desire starring Barbie Hsu, Peter Ho and Huang Xiao-Ming, in the meantime. I've been trying to search for the scanlations online, plus my little sister enforces me to read Skip Beat before its live-action adaptation airs.

@ twin

Hahahaha, love the flow chart of the strategies. We need to add one for Japan, Korea and Spain.

Hubs goes for underdogs (who actually has a chance), so he's for The Netherlands this time. I always go for the big fat boorish Goliaths, so, erm....Go Brazil?

As for the preemption, I think this will really really hurt Bad Guy's flow the most, but ratings-wise, not sure it'll bump any of the dramas off their trajectory once the WC is over. I think the dramas airing against the WC games should be scared they will be bulldozed, especially if Korea is playing.

I LOVE the WC. In 1994, I was visiting my college during the summer before freshman year when the WC was in the US, and OMG, it was such a thrill to feel the excitement in the air and the hordes of people descending upon the South Bay.

I'll join the WC supporters band! Yaaaayy, even when I think my country's team will FAIL, I don't care, it's the friggin' WC! After all, we have dramas everyday, every year. You can check out some oldies or rewatch your favourites :P

Wooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!

@mellowyel: yes, you're going against Korea but the 22nd. Your first match is against Argentina, from where I'm from - we have the worst team ever, hahahaha, but I hope we win ^^

O hubby will be SCREAMING in joy for a fellow Netherlands fan!! He's Marco Van Basten's fanboy for life! He'll be down the books as one of the all time bestest players, I have no problem w/ that, but it's when hubs trying to sell him as a handsome guy on top of his talents, I'll have to say he's a better looking Will Ferrell.
He'll be wearing his 3 ancient orange jerseys to work next 2 wks just to annoy his coworkers and burn their eyeballs.

so sorry for the OTing, I'm just very very excited for WC, for hot sweaty guys in uniforms.
I mean even for the non soccer fans, we can fangirl the studs for 2 wks, cleanse our palette fr our regular K hot namjas (esp KNG, KJH) in the mean time?! Short absence makes the heart grows fonder! ;)

HOW I HATE FOOTBALL!!!

No Coffee House, no KJH until 28.06! I don't think I'm going to cope with that... Episode 8 was a turning point of the series and now, FOOTBALL is here to postpone everything?!!!
Plus I'm pretty sure France won't make it through the first round... Even if they did I would not agree with that (I don't like the way they've been qualified, i.e. Thierry Henry's HAND). Yes, I'm French, but I don't support France :D.

Well then... See you on June 28, Coffee House :(...

I'm so ready for USA vs England. Beckham is sitting out this time around due to injuries, right? I hope USA doesn't let their guard down otherwise. I want USA to demolish England in this first game.

I recall my pops took me to watch the '84 Olympics soccer night matches in L.A. He still wears the souvenir t-shirt when games on. ^ , ^

@35 Carinne

I went to a bunch of the 1984 Olympic soccer games that were here in MD. Memorably, Qatar vs. France was a BLAST. It was sold out, but it was mostly filled with local soccer fans. The Qatar team won a bunch of folks over - their embassy all shipped in from DC down 50 to Annapolis and taught everyone in the stands a cheer. It was a party.

There were a bunch of local kids who were helping on the sidelines. The Yugoslav goalie made friends for life by treating the little girl whose job it was to bring him water like a little princess. Ah - good times......

It's time like this that reminds me there's a life beyond Kdrama(hehe). Don't get me wrong, my Husband and kids will tell you how obsessed I can be if I'm glued to the laptop while I'm in "Kdramaland" (Hello...Can we have our dinner, yet??)
So guys, it's ok...take a (small) break from your beloved drama. They will return. It's still early Summer,go and enjoy a walk with your family/friends; have that dinner w/ someone special. If you're like me, once the World Cup is over, you will probably "park" yourself back in front of the PC/laptop/tv and resume your "time" with your fav drama.
Until then, Yah World Cup!!!!( This is from someone who grew up in a soccer (the REAL football) country (HKG---@mookie :) ) and played enough games with the neighborhood kids ;)

World Cup FOR THE WIN!!! Dude, I love Coffee House more than air, but the World Cup totally, TOTALLY supersedes everything. I grew up in a football (soccer) country. I lived in a high-rise and I remember watching the game with my family with the doors to the balcony open, and when we scored a goal, you could hear an entire city of two million people screaming in unison. It is one of my most treasured childhood memories. World Cup > everything else. That's just how it is. Like it!

And oh my God, it's so funny to see that there are other posters with Netherland-supporting hubbies on here. My hubby is actually Holland-born and he's beside himself. He and his Dutch cronies are all pumped and Dutch together and all, "Ja! Ach!", and I'm all ... m'keh.

Funny story, though. He's a bit bummed about Coffee House being off the air. We just finished episode 8 and ****spoiler**** he totally spazzed. What is hilarity? Hilarity is watching a 6'5" Dutchman go, "OMG, OMG, she totally nailed him! Did you see how she just totally kissed the SHIT out of him???" I fell over sideways on the couch, I was laughing so hard. I'm kind of glad for the break actually; another straight week of Coffee House and he would probably leave me for Eun-young. :-)

Anyway, back to the World Cup. GO USA!!!
