Goong, Iljimae director takes on Playful Kiss adaptation
by javabeans
Okay, now THIS I could really get behind!
When I first heard about the adaptation of Itazura na Kiss for Korean television, I was not impressed — I’m tired of the constant Japanese-manga-to-kdrama efforts, and I was skeptical about Group Eight’s ability to handle it well. The production house’s biggest success to date has been Boys Before Flowers, and they seem to have a particular eye for translating trendy manhwas to television, but for every decent show (Tamra the Island) they’ve had a bomb (Goong S). And we all know that Boys Before Flowers was a success despite numerous flaws.
However! Now director Hwang In-roi has signed on, and that makes me very, VERY excited. Hwang In-roi did Goong and Return of Iljimae, and turned those two projects into sumptuous feasts for the eyes. I didn’t love Goong‘s pacing, but as a work of directing it’s a gorgeous feat, and Return of Iljimae, I’m sure you all know, is one of my favorite dramas ever. Those two dramas, which were both based on manhwas, have breathtaking cinematography and two of the best soundtracks and scores of any kdramas I’ve ever seen. Hwang has a sharp eye and brings out the best in his actors, including a few who were not known for their acting before working with him (Yoon Eun-hye, Joo Ji-hoon, Jung Il-woo), and has a wonderful, delicate touch with emotional beats.
Writing is Go Eun-nim of Bungee Jumping of Our Own, the 2001 film starring Lee Byung-heon and the late Lee Eun-ju.
Playful Kiss (aka Mischievous Kiss) was adapted into a hit Taiwanese drama in 2005, It Started With a Kiss, and was so popular that it produced a sequel series.
The Korean drama version will soon finish casting and begin filming in July, and is aiming for a Fall 2010 broadcast.

I think Park Bo Young will fit for the role. The girl from Itazura na Kiss is small, not so call beauty, but look clumsy and cute in a weird way. And I think Park Bo Young can act well in this kind of role. For the male lead, may be, Jang Geun Suk, or Lee Min Ho, because the character must be presented from high school through college (or maybe even when they are in adulthood,) I think someone who can blend as high schooler and grown-up man at the same time will be perfect for the role.

JGS and LMH will be in some dilemma if they take this role i think....too much of the same for both JGS ( HTK in yab) and LMH ( GJP in BOF and to some extend JJH in PT)....Irie-kun in the j drama was this guy who was always in control, very cold inside out....there is a big type casting trap waiting for both LMH and JGS if either chooses the role....
i'd like to see a nice tall smart looking actor play this role ( maybe siwon? really fits the type doesn't he???) ....plus for crying out loud dont make the guy a looser i want to slap ever so badly ever time i see his face cos he thinks no end of himself!
as for the girl..a little less heart and a tad more intelligent is all i can really hope for? again shin hye the type casting thing awaits thee if u take this up...MGY would be an interesting choice act...the first work of her's i saw was my little bride and she was soooo adorable in it!

wow... I really hope they know what they're doing with this one. I hated the Taiwanese version because of the girl, well and the guy as well. I read a few chapter of the manga, and the girl was definitely not as annoying in it. That COULD be because of ink on paper vs seeing it in reality.
I really really hope they don't make her to be as slow and dimwitted as the taiwanese heroine. But a lot of people did love the drama, so they must be doing SOMETHING right.

Looking forward to this, but I have a hard time believing that they'll find two characters that will top the performances of Joe Cheng and Ariel Lin in the lead roles, not to mention Jiro Wang. Eh, maybe I'm being overly skeptical, but the performances in ISWAK were amazing and the casting was pretty spot on, I'm not sure they could top it.
Also, *sigh*, as much as I wanted to like Boys Over Flowers, the Japanese and the Taiwanese interpretations of that story were SO much better, in my opinion of course. Maybe the acting/directing/writing styles of Taiwan and Japan make the Manga to Television transition easier to handle (for Japan it does help that it is THEIR comics). Korean shows seems less likely to go over the top in a more "cartoony" way that I feel is often necessary to capture the essence of the manga the series is based on (which is not to say that they aren't over the top, just not in THAT way) The spirit of the manga can be lost if you try to play it down too much.
Whatever, I'll hope for the best and pray they do a good job with the casting.

#52 Daisy,
The first girl I thought of was Kim So Eun. But now that you mention it, I think Park Bo Young is the best candidate for this part. Lee Min Ho can do this role I'm sure, and they would have excellent chemistry as they've known each other for years. But then again, I don't think Lee Min Ho can do another drama almost similar to Jeon Jin Ho.
Yep. Park Bo Young would be perfect. I've only seen her in Mackerel Run and she was funny with her cameo appearances and at the same time sweet. So yeah, she's perfect for this role.

no yoon eun hye (i will feel the oh my lady feeling coming back with her and jung il woo, even though she was awesome in goong as a not so smart person),
gu hye sun (she was already off in BOF not sure if she can pull this well),
moon guen young (seriously i need time to forget angsty CS first, and she was SO smart in CS that i cannot even imagine her acting dumb ... =/ ),
and more... but JUNG IL WOO pls!!!!

A terminally stupid (but warm) heroine and a genius (but cold) hero? Oh, and don't forget the smart girl who tries to get between them. No thanks.
No matter how good the directing is, I positively hate the basis of the story, and I have not liked a single version of it.
Maybe if they switched the genders it would at least have a novel appeal, but otherwise it is just tired and embarrassing.

ISWAK and TKA (it's sequel) were awesome Taiwanese series. I really want to see how a Korean version will excel such excellence. I want both to finish through. I'm shuffling through actor profiles and no Korean actors stands out to play the lead roles. Joe Cheng and Ariel Lin were simply phenomenal embracing their roles. This thread will be fun to stalk.

I like Itazura na Kiss (both the Jdorama, as well as the Taiwanese ones, although I admit I watched those more for Ariel Lin and Joe Cheng than anything else), so pretty excited for this, but at the same time hesitant...Korea hasn't had the best track record when it comes to reproducing mangas that have already been adapted into live-action by Japan and Taiwan.
Still...man, if Kim Soo Hyun gets a role here as Naoki, it'd be killer, (Of course there are several other actors I could mention whom I would totally love as Naoki as well, like Kang Don Won, Kim Jae Wook etc) but I'm really concerned about who takes up the female casting. Hers is the role that would potentially make or break the series, to be honest. Hope they find someone who manages to walk the thin line between bumbling naviety and outright stupidity and make Kotoko appealing rather than...well...an idiot. Although she kinda is. A very cute idiot. LOL

Knowing k-drama, they're going to give her some backbone and spunk, aren't they? The original Kotoko is actually pretty cute and not really annoying. I'm hoping they kind of stick with that. Something like Park Shin-hye's character in You're Beautiful, but a bit stronger. Please, anything but a Jandi.

I think all Team Park Kyu -ers are thinking, IM JOOHWAN. Well, I know I am, heh. LOL. But seriously, Im Joohwan's Park Kyu, wow. I know he can pull off a decent Naoki Irie. Crossing fingers here..
I've seen the Taiwanese version of this. I know for a lot of people this was one of their favorites, but I've gotta say I absolutely hated it. And I think it's because of that I sort of thought less of Ariel Lin. I don't think she brought out any (existing?) charming features of the Kotoko character. Sorry, I can't rally behind a really really, and I mean really, dumb female protagonist. Most of the time I was watching that I wanted to headdesk myself.
The Kotoko character in itself is really difficult for actresses to pull off, at least in my opinion, where I find it hard to just rally behind such a dumb protagonist - therefore, the female casting is really important in determining whether Kotoko will just be plain dumb or with somewhat redeeming factors that I can sympathize with enough. Still. Hwang Inroi is a huge plus. Hopefully this will become a Tamra success. Hopefully.
But, really, not many actresses come to mind. Or maybe it's because I don't really wanna see some of my favorite actresses play such a.... "meh" character.

Wow! I am learning a lot by reading comments by drama enthusiasts and experts here. I am quite new and only started to view TV dramas (Taiwanese and Korean) not too long ago. I particularly like Boys Before Flowers for the story-line and sound tracks. Perhaps naive, I still feel Lee Min Ho will do a good job if casted for this drama. As for the female lead, Park Shin Hye seems suitable in my view.

Naoki: Kim So Hyun, Im Joo Hwan, Yoo Seung Ho, Kim Suk.
Kotoko: Park Bo Young, Go Ah Sung, Shin Se Kyung, Seo Woo, SNSD Yoona,
Love the Ariel Lin Joe Zheng Taiwanese tandem. They can't cast too beautiful actress for Kotoko, must be quite ordinary faces but can do adorable and not overload cutesy. As for Naoki they can cast handsome boy, but he must can looks cold & bit emotionless at the beginning.

i am crossing my fingers for a good cast. the character of Kotoko will be really hard to act- she would have to be pathetic and annoying but still be likable and sympathetic. We need someone not to 'act stupid' but to be sincere while doing so. Otherwise, we would just be transplanting Lee Jia's character hijinx from Style into the drama. We need a male lead who can get the audience drooling when Kotoko gets frustrating. there are a lot of young actors there that I think would be good possibilities for these two roles...but i think those actors deserve better dramas than this. As enjoyable as the TW version was, it started with a kiss is a bit of fluff/idol type of drama. they should probably cast unknowns.
maybe the korean version will make a less stupid Kotoko. I mean korea managed to turn a strong Jandi into a wimp in BOF...so who knows...

I remember pre Goong days when fans of the manga highly opposed PD Hwang's cast... but then he proved them wrong & we all know how Goong turned out :)
he's not the type who would be influenced by fans' choices for the lead roles, he'll stick to his preferences. I agree w/ JB, he has a sharp eye & brings out the best in his actors :)

I'm hoping that it'll turn out alright. I love the director's vision of Goong, despite the slow pacing.
However, I'm still wondering whether the main actors will have the same chemistry as ISWAK. The chemistry between Ariel and Joe was just undeniable and that's what kept me watching despite the slow pace (sometimes) and exaggeration.
The Japanese adaption in 1995 was also good. Although I couldn't stand Kotoko sometimes (she was just really annoying...and her ears took most of my attention), Irie-kun was just awesome.
But yes, despite all that, I still can't wait to watch this.

I noticed some people bringing up idols with somewhat okay acting. Honestly, I'm in the NO area.
I think it's great for fanfics and Banjun dramas... but I get so dissapointed when there's a drama that has such a great potential to be that good.. and then you get some people that can't act and pull down the drama.
True, this is a manga-adapted-drama. But I enjoy feeling emotionally connected to a drama regardless of it's genre, and that's pretty hard when some people are casted with little acting chops and are more about the visuals.
Maybe I'm still coping to forget Goong S. Yes. Goong. ESSSSS. THE HORROR.
