Three Brothers extended 20 episodes
by javabeans
KBS’s weekend drama Three Brothers is a frustrating watch for me, but it has performed consistently well in the ratings, with numbers in the 30% range. Despite increasing complaints that the drama is becoming decidedly makjang (as in, loaded with over-the-top dramatics purely to score ratings), KBS has decided to grant it a 20-episode extension, bringing the total run to 70 episodes.
Considering that it has dominated the weekend airwaves since it first premiered, this is no surprise. I can’t stand to watch the drama so this extension doesn’t do much to alter my viewing schedule, even if the CP promised that the characters, who are being criticized in the current storylines, will change by the drama’s end. I thought the show started off promising with the emphasis on the drama’s most likable character, youngest son Lee Jun-hyuk and his comic courtship, but it fast devolved into aggravating conflicts between incredibly unlikable characters like the mother (grarrr) and the daughters-in-law, who are alternately selfish and dour. (Their husbands ain’t so great either.)
With this extension, Three Brothers will run through June 13.

I agree with you!
I tried it once hoping that it could be as good as Sons of Sol pharmacy but I was disappointed, and I don't know why the rating is that much high (4 Sons worths its rating but this drama...grrr!!!?)

i enjoy this a lot more than many (most) others do -- i see growth and change in all the characters and in their relationships with each other (e.g., the 3 brothers starting to help each other, not just dwell on their past resentments) EXCEPT for that absolute Witch (and i do mean witch, not b) of a mother. I mute the sound or FF through all her scenes. I'm at ep 35 or so and she has not moved one inch from where she was in ep 1. I've seen a lot of horrible mothers and mothers-in-law in 8 years of watching k-dramas and she takes the cake. I would love to know how her character is perceived in korea - do they hate her there also or is there some sympathy among ajumma b/c of what she stands for?
despite my enjoyment of the show as a whole, i don't think this needs another 20 eps. I always thought KBS was better at not participating in the ep-extension trend. pooh.
for all of you comparing this to Sons of Sol Pharmacy -- think back at how often you railed against its makjang elements and how much you hated Lee Pilmo's character at the beginning. Yup, i too think Sons was much better than this too. Just sayin...

i think its a good watch. i actually prefer the elder 2 sons stories than the youngest son's. haha... but then again.. aunties like myself love complicated shit. =) for anyone interested to watch this drama i suggest watching from episode 34 or so onwards, more interesting.

So I should stop watching this dopey series until
WHICH EPISODE
in which the poor daughter-in-law flying spin kicks
her mother-in-law to the head, to finally shut her up?
(Followed by a respectful to the elderly B-N-A, of course.) :)

I loathe the hateful mother; she's so loud and unreasonable all the time!
I think everyone's hanging on just to see what happens to Umi when she gets her makeover. :)

Now that Umi's made an online friend, it's only a matter of time till she meets him and he turns out to be her knight in shining armor. Then the whole jealous husband theme will kick in (just like "Give Me Food.")

can't understand why they extened this series for another 20 episodes. The series is boring and slow. All they do is bicker and shout at each other constantly. Lost interest in this series and not watching it. Should show another
more interesting series than this.

@12,
The extension reason is obvious. Because the makjang formula works. March 14th episode hit 39.5% in Seoul, 39.9% nationwide. It's not a stretch to see it hit 45% soon (probably not sustainable, but with plotlines leading to deep trouble soon, I see a new spike coming). Those are crazy mad high numbers, getting into the range of Temptation of Wife ratings when that series was at its mak-jang zaniest.
To put those numbers into perspective. Those numbers are 2.5 to 3 times the ratings of the Pasta drama series. Double the WUAS ratings. 4 to 5 times the ratings of Still Marry Me.
I guess people like crazy characters that they can boo and criticize. And, I hate to say this, but the ratings are high because there is undoubtedly a segment of the viewership that IV's schadenfreude with these dramas. They literally just stick a needle into their arm, have the tube run into the TV and then they suck in the schadenfreude. I don't approve, but I understand it.

Uggghhh... 20 more episodes of sitting through Eo-young's whining? :( Sheesh, now if only they can bring in a new love interest for the youngest son. They'll still have more time. Haha!

Three brother drama consistent first place in weekend except episode 15. There are episode I enjoy and episode I did not dare to watch. I watch this drama because this drama have realistic element although I have mute and skip forwarding some scene. Well please did not say this drama don't deserve high rating. Trust me open our eyes and look carefully what happen in three brothers really happen in this world. May be that the reason a lot Korean citizen watch this drama. Emphasize the viewer.

@Jae In, thank you, I appreciate your perspective.
I am just watching the Seollal (Lunar New Year) episodes and i'm struck by how much resonates: Umi overworking, single people having no place to go, the conflict that arises because Eo-young as the oldest daughter in a family without sons has to take on the duties of a son (helllo, hold the ceremonies at different times of day? or must it take place at sundown or something?).

I'm up to Ep 40 tonight. This is not a gripping makjang drama but a ridiculous makjang drama. At first, I tuned in for Lee Jun Hyuk, but now I just tune in for the ridicule. It's sad to see ratings this high for all the wrong reasons. Sigh!!

Schadenfreude? I'm laughing so hard right now that my tummy and tears working together like a trio. Do you know that is a very graphic picture?
My opinion on that drama....I got turned off to it. So....I left the needle sitting on the tv set and went outside to play. :-)

I quite like the drama but feel frustrated for Umi. Can't stand the mother though -forever angry and whining. Serves her right for favouring the 1st daughter -in- law and taking Umi for granted.

Yeah, I'm in the "hanging in just to see what Umi will do" category. Every time I see her husband I want to punch him. There are times I catch myself talking out loud to his character like my mom yells at tennis.
The only non-selfish one out of the whole family is pretty much Umi in my opinion. Even if she nags him, it's because he has hardly lived up to the expectations as her husband. I can't find myself feeling sorry for his character one bit. Hopefully the writers are going to redeem him soon cus I can't think of a 20 ep extension of that man bullying his wife more and my computer monitor staying intact and not pummeled.

I need to correct myself for something I said earlier that may come across as insensitive to Korean culture, which is the last thing I would want to do.
i wrote (argh, hating to repeat it) "(helllo, hold the ceremonies at different times of day? or must it take place at sundown or something?)"
I just read that traditionally, this (Charye) ceremony takes place after midnight, altho many families now hold it in the evening. So the question is how traditional each family (Isang's and Eo-young's) is and how much leeway they would allow not to hold it after midnight. Again, my apologies for making it sound like time of day was not important.

I agree to the max! THis is such a frustrating watch for me!!! It started well and I really liked the Maknae Isang (policeman) but he grew into such an irritating husband (like the rest of his bro!) after he got married! Okay granted his wife is not an angel also, but still i dont know how can the difference be so great?!
Everytime when im watching i just wish they will just all get their divorce lol. Cause its so irritating with the quarrels, the fights, the short peace period and then another drama incidents. Plus the mom is really unbearable.
Its so bad until the only redeeming factor were the 2nd bro's two kids: Hongsu and Sangtae. They are too cute and way too sensible lol. Okay I hope this show will really improve before I pull all my hair out!

i am so gald that i am not the only who thinks this drama is so emotionally taxing to watch. there seems to be no likable character... well, probably except for the dad who seems to know how to straighten out his family... sometimes. the mother in law is overbearing - makes one think twice about marrying into a korean family. i could be wrong but i seem to watch a lot of korean dramas where the mother in law is not so easy to live with... just my two cents. anyway, i've caught previews online of upcoming episodes already shown in korea and well, it will get more tiring. especially that second son who can't seems to shake off that chief tae. grrr.... another 20 episodes of this storyline will be hard to swallow..

This drama is way over dramatic. I honestly can't see why people are tuning in to watch this crap. I hate the actors and the storyline. The only person I like in this drama is the father (former cop). Everyone is so lame. If you still want to watch this crap called entertainment, be my guest. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. If you want to watch something that is worth your time, I highly recommend the following: OB-GYN & Dandelion Family.

umi and the father are the only ones I actually like. All three of the guys are insensitive momma's boys. I thought Ilsang would have become a little smart after marriage, but he is completely retarded. His wife isn't much better. she annoys me with her nagging and her little sister is a twit! umi's husand is trying to make his wife seem like she is crazy for suspecting him for cheating with his co-worker when it is obvious to anybody his co-worker is completely in heat over the man. the mother needs a hobby and the father needs to start giving her the "business" again and maybe she will be to busy to meddle in the affairs of her grown A-- children. Sorry for the rant, but this show raises my blood pressure. but the sad thing is, I can't stop watching it.............................aaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh!
