Prayer ceremony for Personal Taste
by javabeans
The production of MBC’s Personal Taste held its prayer ceremony this week, as you can see from these photos featuring the cast, namely Sohn Ye-jin, Lee Min-ho, Kim Ji-suk, and Wang Ji-hye.
There have been a few comments in past threads so for the sake of clarification, the prayer ceremony isn’t a religious exercise, despite its name. It’s a common practice on film and drama sets and is often held in before filming begins or a drama premieres, to wish for good fortune and a safe production experience.
The occasion was held in the Yangju Cultural Village, which houses one of the drama’s principal filming locations, the traditional Korean-style house where Sohn Ye-jin’s character lives, into which Lee Min-ho moves as her roommate. The home was built by the drama production specifically for the drama, and it figures significantly in the plot. In addition to the cast, also present were the drama’s director, MBC drama department’s vice president, the CEO of Yigim Productions, the crew, and the writer of the original novel. (Writer Lee Sae-in, by the way, is also penning the drama scripts. I’m considering this a positive thing, because I’m hoping she’ll be confident knowing when to be faithful to the original story, but more importantly, when it’s safe to diverge.)
The drama is riding pretty decent pre-show buzz, but it does have a significant hurdle to overcome: The article notes that not since 2008 has an MBC Wednesday-Thursday drama been able to draw double-digit ratings. (That’s mostly true. The one exception is Return of Iljimae in early 2009, which started off in the teens but ended in the single digits. Then came Cinderella Man, which was riddled with writing flaws; Triple, whose sluggish pace lost viewer interest; Hon, which managed a few episodes in the 10%-11% range but mostly averaged around 9%; Heading to the Ground, which was a mess all the way through; Hero, which was a mania draw but had very low numbers and couldn’t keep up with IRIS; and the most recent series, The Woman Who Still Wants To Marry, which was no match for Chuno‘s blockbuster numbers.)
Personal Taste will have to prove itself against some tough competition: It premieres March 31 against KBS’s Cinderella’s Sister and SBS’s Prosecutor Princess.

"If you only concentrate on one in your life than of course you’re going to excel in it."
Not necessarily. I'm not speaking specifically of GHS and SYJ when I say that just because an actress has been acting longer does not necessarily make her a better actress, nor does one who engage in different hobbies necessarily have less of a chance of being a better actress. Take figure skating, for example. There are many professional skaters out there, who probably all concentrate only on skating, but there are clear differences in skill, artistry, etc. regardless of age. Older age does not correspond to greater skill, nor does youth correspond to greater potential in the future. There's also talent involved. Just saying.

Yay - I'm looking forward to this series a lot :) I want to see what kind of chemistry this new pairing and create onscreen... I have been surprised before, I'm sure I can be surprised again. I wouldn't have thought that they would pair these two together, but it sounds really delightful! =) I wish them the best.
I really like SYJ as an actor -- she's got talent and acting chops. LMH - I think this is a great opportunity for him to show everyone that he's capable of so much more than BOF.
Looking forward to episode 1.......

Goo Hye Sun isn't part of this drama- I really see no need for her to be in this topic, and I can't see why #10 bought it up. I'm not disrespecting what 10 thinks about GHS- we all have different opinions, but I think 10 should've bought it into a more GHS-related thread. And the whole SYJ/GHS comparison thing going on.. SYJ's in this drama and GHS isn't. I don't get what's so hard about that for some people.
And at 32: lmao! I like masculine eyebrows too. :D But maybe it's just better for them to have a double eyelid and a single one- I prefer the stars without any plastic surgery. Although, like you, I don't understand why they don't fix it. Heck, they probably got surgery for their noses or what not. But yeah, I think a lot of Koreans have weird double eyelids. Like my little sister, they're uneven. And although I don't have double eyelids, I do get them a lot. Like you know when you wake up or wash your face or sometimes just randomly, my double eyelid appears and my right eye's double eyelid is smaller than my left one. Who knows whats up with double eyelids? :P

I love reading your comments on dramas. It's actually much more entertaining than the news itself. But about this one in particular... This is exactly why I LOVE Korean dramas. When there's an interesting drama facing tough competition in its time slot in America, I avoid it like I plague because 90% of the time it'll be canceled and I can't face the heartache. But with Korean dramas, I know it'll be finished. So there's no angst. xD Whether the drama actually does well to me is sort of irrelevant so as long as I like it... Though of course I know it's not to the stars themselves.

@35 & 45 Actually I agree with you about LMH talent. Yes he has talent for acting & he also has a chance to be a great actor in the future, but so does many other actors. What I want to say is before BOF LMH is an "unknown" actor who has a dream to become a famous actor one day, like so many aspiring actors's dream. And he has that chance by getting casted in BOF. He has been stared in several drama & movies before but it is BOF who catapulted him into stardom. LMH is a lucky one who has been given a chance to star in a big hit drama. But how about the other unlucky actors ? Do you know how many young actors who have talent but didn't give a chance like him yet...many. So I think LMH is a lucky one. Besides I think the background of BOF as being a drama who's been adapted from famous manga also give contribution to LMH famousness, not just his talent. So it's unavoidable if many people still doubt about his popularity right now. Is it a real one, is he really has a star power, or is he really a good actor ? so many question/doubtness he have to prove in this second series after he's getting popularity.

No need to bring such an unimportant discussion about GHS and SYJ. Because I'm so freakin excited about this drama! I hope this drama would turn the table around. This drama looks very promising, well at least for me. :D

poor GHS - give that girl a break! Just because of some overzealous, irrational fans of hers whose comments we do not need to take seriously anyway, she gets bashed AGAIN. I'm no fan of hers but I do feel sorry that there are so many malicious, mean-spirited people out there looking for every single opportunity to pounce on any mention of her to put her down. Give that poor girl a break!
I can't wait for PT next week! Thanks for sharing the novel with us, JB! Love the story, love the MH and YJ pairing! Counting down to March 31st!

I also find Lee Min-ho an exceptional actor - especially for his age. He has a wide range and impecable timing. I know that I will enjoy PT, even if it doesn't get the ratings.
Oh, and what a lush table - I love these ceremonies. I think they must be so unifing for crew and cast - I think. For this non-Korean, it seems to be more of a traditional expression of hope and gratitude as contrast to conventional religious churchy- and sometimes exclusive - events.

I agree with #30 and please leave Goo Hye Sun out of Personal Taste topic. This is a LMH and Son Yeh Jin project and nothing to do at all with GHS. GHS starred in 2 Korean dramas in the Top 50 Highest rated dramas of all time while SYJ has none. Personally looking at their promo photos alone gave me the impression that LMH is not comfortable with SYJ at all. I've seen SYJ in other projects like My Wife Got Married and that movie with Go Soo where she in both projects bared a lot of skin . I still feel she is misscast here and the role should have gone to Yoo Eun Hye. Han Hyo Joo, Han Ji Hye, or Eugene. They need all the prayers they can get to obtain at least a double digit ratings considering their formidable opponents in their time slot!!!!!!!

Yes,let us leave GHS out of this drama -she has nothing to do with this -just like I would like to suggest to the writer of this blog to leave KHJ out of the My Pet movie when the guy opted not to do it anyway. If the writer wants to praise the substitute actor ,so be it , no need to harp on the first choice simply because it is the opinion of the writer that KHJ could not handle the role . Let us stop this comparison on what might have been -it is useless effort .Thank you .

Aren't you being rather tough on "the writer of this blog?"
Without javabeans writing her opinions here, what have we got left?
Nice pictures?
PS.......As a matter of fact, I happen to think that Kim Hyun-joong
did a pretty good job as Ji-hoo in "Boys Over Flowers." I think that
he was SUPPOSED to be a robot in the beginning episodes and
then break out of his self-imposed shell as the story progressed.
So I disagreed with javabeans on her opinion that KHJ would have
been unable to do a good job of acting in Kimi wa petto. (sp?)
But I respect opposing opinions to mine, especially if that person isn't a jerk
about it. :)
There's a famous quote that might fit in........right about here:
~ I may disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death
your right to say it ~

PERSONAL TASTE vs. CINDERELLA's SISTER
i like personal taste. i managed to get through two and a half episodes of cinderella's sister but decided to drop it. moon geun young is a stellar actress. but the soap is just full of angst. life is a little bit sad as it is so i generally go for romantic comedies.
PERSONAL TASTE vs. YOU'RE BEAUTIFUL
i like personal taste. though i think boys over flowers is overrated (which i haven't watched it), i think i'm liking lee min ho (of course not to the max like jang geun seuk. honestly, i did not like LMH because i don't think that the popularity he got from BOF "is" worth it.). son yeh jin's acting was a little over the top (song hye gyo's portrayal of a stupid girl was far more engaging and believable for me), but lee min ho's was far better.
...PLOT AND PACE
the story, well, i'd say, i still prefer you're beautiful. for one, i didn't like the fact that jeon jin hoo being gay has not been revealed until ep 6 (this is where i currently stopped as no subs available). in contrast, it's really refreshing to see hwang tae kyung to know about go mi nam as early as ep 2. a new in the world of soap, where the main secret was already revealed early on, and the plot that ensues revolving around HTK knowing about it.
...SET AND CINEMATOGRAPHY
i have to applaud the YAB team for this. they definitely know what they are doing. each scene was carefully choreographed, picturesque even without nature as its backdrop. the house, the studio building, everything, more than great!
in contrast, PT went for studio sets. i can only imagine how songjojae (did i spell it right?) would have looked if it were shot on location. Princess hours' was even better, and it was some years back. for me, the backdrop looked a bit fake. even the office of han chang ryul's father was in a studio set. the cinematography, where there was no art in it.
...CHARACTERS
i like LMH character, it has depth. but for one reason, i feel HTK's pain more than JJH. i don't know if it was the writing or the portrayal. i mean, i am liking LMH, but i feel that JGS is a better actor.
SYJ, well as i have mentioned, a little over the top. SHG portrayal of the stupid han ji eun was far more believable for me. on the other hand, PSH, well, there were times that she was over the top as well, but i feel it was justifiable in that her character GMN, grew in a convent. she was in a way, oblivious to the real world.
...SONGS
both great! but YAB's rock. lyrics more heartfelt. but PT's is also good.
...EXTENSION AND RATINGS
it's really sad that YAB didn't have an extension. it was deserving of it. it's young, new, hip...simply stellar). it's sad that quality doesn't necessarily translate to quantity (ratings). (oh darn iris! why does it have to shown at the same time YAB was).
i am still hoping for a season two of YAB, but m thinking, that may be too much to ask for. (calling SBS)
PT, i am fearing that it might lag already. but of course, since it is my current flavor, i am all for it.

Hi everyone!
Just want to share a comment as LMH fan here in the Philippines. Im a Filipina but definitely I was able to love & appreciate Korean Mini Series Shows/ Movies.
But the recent one which struck me hugely was BOF and because of LMH. The first day I saw the guy it really kills me his personality. I believe so that LMH got really one of the great breaks from BOF. I agree with #35 there are so many scenes in BOF that LMH has proven that he has huge acting skills. There are lots of dramatic moments in that series that he able to show.. .
More so, LMH at his very young age, I believe he has bright future to be one of the Best Korean Actor. He has already LUCK, SKILLS and FAME on his hands. Now his journey begins on how he will ride on it.
For his Personal Taste series. I definitely watched it. Whoever his partner or leading lady in the future for the next project , I will support him all the way. Here in the Philipines, BOF, was PHENOMENAL. The ratings itself smashed its competitors even the local shows. Just last month again, there was even a rerun of BOF and that's becuase of milions of filipino fans requested it. And we love the Artists & the Characters they portrayed. Great job LHM!

I personally am starting to get BORED with now Korean drama. All the same story line no matter what country it is. I was enjoying it for a bit then it's different actors/actresses but same story line. Of course the viewers often forget that it's a drama played by actors/actresses and can't seem to separate what's real and what's on screen. Actors all come out the same as well. They eventually become more into women and want more of them. As most women in men. GHS is an actresses who's does well for herself. Good or Bad, I can't say cause she's sure as hell BETTER THEN ME. She has made great success in pretty much all that she's tried to accomplish. What do I do, use to be good at watching drama and making comments. But since I get carried away, I am slowly trying to get away from watching drama's again. Since reading comments, most comments are not about the MOVIE but about the actors personal life. A lot of viewers can't seem to focus on the story line not the personal life's of the actors. It's drama! They have scripts they read on what to say, how to act, etc. I've seen worse actors/actresses. But eh, they sure get paid more then me and my whole neighborhood put together.
As for these actors/actresses, eventually they all start to be certain way. Some get carried away an lose themselves. LMH states his never going to be like somebody he knows but guess what, his already slowly getting there. The actress who made up a fake relationship with her co actor became desperate for more recognition that she felt the need to pertain she's someone else's girlfriend and in the end GAME OVER.
You have this drama coming up. LMH went from pecking to slurping (LOL). GHS was full of confidence that because of uncalled for nasty comments had to take a break, an rumors of things being said that's just way out of line. TOUGH WORLD OUT THERE.
Bottom line, I think we all lack or starve for LOVE, SEX, AND VIOLINCES.. The more modern we get the more we lose the human nature in people, the more richer the nastier one gets and more advance medicine the more sickness, etc....... It's a thought!!!!!!!!
