Jack-of-all-trades Gu Hye-sun’s secret: “I’m a workaholic”

Gu Hye-sun hasn’t been acting for the past year, and is currently wrapping up work on her first feature film. (She made her directorial debut with a short film last year.) Here’s a recent interview where she talks about her myriad artistic interests and how these different pursuits culminate with her film.

Jack of all trades Gu Hye-sun’s secret: “I’m a workaholic. If I don’t work, I feel uneasy”

The entertainment industry’s “Renaissance girl,” director-actor-songwriter-writer… Gu Hye-sun

“Gu-onardo Da Vinci.”

He was a “Renaissance man” specializing in many diverse fields, from medicine to science, art, and architecture. Leonardo da Vinci is the name Gu Hye-sun alludes to. Attached in front of her name are many modifiers. Actor, film director, writer, songwriter — she covers many genres in popular culture.

She played the part of Geum Jan-di in the 2009 drama Boys Before Flowers, published the novel Tango, released an album with Japanese New Age musician Asao Sasaki. The short film she directed in 2008, The Madonna, has been invited to various international film festivals, and she recently went to Japan’s Yubari International Fantastic Film Festival as a director. I met with this multi-talented “Renaissance girl,” Gu Hye-sun.

Wearing a yellow sweater that felt of spring, she is busy these days in the latter stages of production for her first feature film as director, Magic [요술].

“I draw with ballpoint pen, which doesn’t allow corrections… even if you make a mistake, I consider it a new style”

“There are a lot of things you do. What do you want to be called?”

[Thinking for a moment] “Someone who lives diligently? I don’t know either what I should be called. I’m careful about it. I’ve just got a lot of interests.”

What kind of reviews would make you feel good?

“I like hearing ‘She works hard.’ I also like hearing ‘When does she find time to sleep?’ I think I’m a workaholic. If I’m not doing anything, I can’t stay still because I feel uneasy and think, ‘Am I a useless person?’ At home I help with the housework, and I train the five dogs I’m raising.”

Actually, it isn’t that Gu Hye-sun has belatedly revealed her hidden talents recently. It’s probably that she was born like this. When she was young, she liked drawing pictures and writing, and liked to show other people. She made her own children’s songs and sang them. To borrow her words, “While drawing, music would come to me, and when I was working on music, pictures would come to me.” In her first year of high school in 1997, she won first place in a national drawing contest.

You like to draw with ballpoint pen, which is unusual.

“Paints are expensive, and I’ve gotten used to drawing with ballpoint pen since I was young. If I drew with pencil I kept erasing, so I used pen so I couldn’t fix it. Even if it didn’t come out like I wanted it initially, I kept drawing thinking it was a new style.”

You sought out SM Entertainment wanting to be a singer.

“At the time, it wasn’t that I had a clear picture of what life I wanted. It was a vague desire. And I liked not going to school. Rather than studying in school, I liked learning through experiencing things first. I liked practicing rather than cramming.”

Did you hate school that much?

“I think I lost the excitement for school in the first year of high school. I thought, ‘Where will I use all this math?’ and couldn’t get excited about studying. Plus I was young, so I had that dislike of school.”

Gu Hye-sun says that the time she studied hardest was in her first semester of her first year at Seoul Women’s University’s broadcast and entertainment department. At the time, she thought of her parents’ opposition to entering the arts department, so she decided not to give them the burden of tuition and received a scholarship. In the department she made first place, but starting in the second semester she dropped out to appear in the MBC sitcom Nonstop 5.

But don’t you still need education?

“If I were born to a rich family and could do anything I wanted, I would have gotten locked up in my thoughts. While creating things freely on my own, I think that’s possible. I would definitely have been antagonistic toward those who received established education. When I first directed a movie, the words I heard most were ‘You can’t do that.’

“But I often responded, ‘Why can’t I? I can just do it.’ So the staff of The Madonna laughed a lot to see how I did things. In the end some things came out strangely, but now the staff thinks, ‘You can just do it.'”

What gave you the opportunity to direct?

“When I was appearing in MBC’s Nonstop 5, I thought it would help me in my acting so I decided to try it. In the process of finding a character that suited me, I ended up writing the script. Then I’d rehearse that script. Through that process, directing came naturally.”

You’re 27 now. Aren’t you young to be directing?

“I went to Japan for the Yubari International Film Festival at the end of February, and someone three years younger than me won a prize. The staff of this film, Magic, are mostly younger than me.”

Last year’s Boys Before Flowers was a big deal.

“I deliberated a lot after receiving the offer. Because I had a bright image, I deliberately picked a sageuk. [King and I] I’d finally made a serious image for myself, so I worried a lot about going back to playing a bright young girl. I decided to do it because the director really wanted me to.”

You received some reviews that your sageuk acting was awkward.

“At the time, I wanted to try an older role, like a young child wanting to imitate an adult.”

You got your start as an uljjang, and there were prejudices regarding that.

“In any case, I think being an uljjang had a lot of advantages. I entered the industry relatively easily. I worried at first that it would be an obstacle in my career, but it helped.”

Are you going to continue working in different areas?

“The conclusion to all these various things is this movie. Looking back, all these things — music, novel, drawing — were for the benefit of the film. A film is a composite artwork, isn’t it? But I consider the most important aspects in a movie the music and the art. I put everything in the hands of mise en scene.”

Who is Gu Hye-sun?

She was born on November 9, 1984. While preparing to be a singer, she shifted to acting at the advice of YG Entertainment’s director Yang Hyun-seok in 2003. Debuted with Kim Yoon-seok in the 2004 KBS Drama City program Anagram (2004), which was directed by IRIS‘s Kim Kyu-tae. Success came with MBC sitcom Nonstop 5. Appeared in subsequent dramas Pure 19, King and I, and Strongest Chil-woo. Rose to stardom in 2009’s Boys Before Flowers. Aside from acting, she debuted as a director in the 2008 short film The Madonna, and released an album and novel in 2009.

Not feeling the love on here.
But in saying that, everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

I admire her for going against the grain, and as for "trying to stand out", i'd have to disagree. It seems as though she is just doing what she seems to enjoy doing, hobby or not.
We cannot judge her too harshly, because we do not know her personally to form such harsh opinions on her ability to do any of what she is pursuing.

So many korean actresses do the same thing, act the same, look the same probably even s&%t just the same way hahaha
Who are we to criticise her for the quirky behaviour, when truth be told given the opportunity i bet more than 95% of the people on here wouldn't say no to meeting her.

She is who she is, like it or lump it. There are no tricks or fancy gadgets. Just her.

Frankly I'm a little irritated with the comment (48) that this article was translated negatively. I assure you I took pains to be neutral, even more so than usual especially since Gu Hye-sun seems to attract a lot of commentary. I would like to ask you seriously, not in a snarky way, to translate the article yourself and demonstrate to me where you believe me to have been negative. And "jack of all trades" is a term the article uses, so there's no need to balk at its usage.

How can you say she will never succeed in any given field?

That's probably THE most negative comment on here. It's as though you expect her to fail, wherein fact neither you nor i or anyone else can predict what will happen in her life.

Well, I guess people are entitled to their own perceptions of Hyesun but to me she is one multi-talented lady that have captured my deep admiration and respect. The KBS awards night had revolutionalised me the way I had never saw her before. Her true humility is so admirable and she has the guts to do what she wants in order to pursue her dreams and goals in life. Hyesun, may God's blessings overtake you in all your future endeavours. We, sunnies will always love and support you always. FIGHTING HYESUN!!!!!

woah. i agree with javabeans. when it comes to gu hye-sun, comments are sure to come flowing.

that said, i think she's still young and eager to learn. and who's to judge if she gets her opportunities easier because she's famous and all?

let her learn and do whatever she wants. if she was eager and yet did not grab the opportunity, then i'd say she's just a dreamer. but she is taking every opportunities that come, so i have to applaud her for that. :)

I will be honest about my TRUE feelings..
i get IRRITATED when i read articles about this lady. She is just trying WAY TOO HARD to impress... and NEVER deliver any quality goods! To me, it is like crowning oneself with the multi-talented title to make oneself stand out. Her acting aren't that great, her drawings aren't that great, what's next? think she is just trying to be SPECIAL.. that's all.

whether she succeed or not succeed in all the things she has done, is not the most important thing, but her braveness to realize things that she loves and dreams is one thing that i like about her the most. not everyone is blessed with the opportunity and a lot of support to make the dream become the real one, so when someone have them just grab and use them well. sometimes, i think if hye sun more focus on one thing, she will be more succeed than do all things in one time, but i guess i,m just jealous with the talent, opportunity, and support that she has, ha, ha, ha..hye sun semangat!!

Take a chill pill, or better yet how about you try and be as active and follow through with some of the dreams you have.
Unless you don't have any dreams you wish to pursue, and your basically a mind numbing robot that spends endless hours online reading GHS articles only to sit there and fume at your dislike of a being you don't know personally other than what you have read.

You make me want to tie you to a chair, tape your eyes open and plant you infront of a tv screen playing GHS dramas..........just to see the look of disdain on your face hahaha

Good luck to her and everything that she does. She obviously has the passion for what she does, and potential. Not everybody gets to live out their dreams like her. I'm glad she's getting the chance to. It's a shame she gets so much hate for her opportunities.

I'm not particularly impressed by any of the work she does, although admittedly I haven't seen her in The King and I, and I haven't seen anything she has directed. Rather than be mediocre at everything, I wish she would focus on one thing and get good at it. With all the hard work that she does, I'm sure if she actually focused on improving one area, she would be brilliant.

Good effing lord I'm so annoyed with people thinking I hate Gu Hye-sun. I just read the comments in soompi (because this article is linked there) and here's what I gotta say: You got a problem with me, face me directly. It's annoying as fuck to read someone dissing you behind your back IN A FORUM where I can also read your comments, people.

If you've been reading this blog a while you'll know I was once quite a vocal advocate of her. Unfortunately, her fans are starting to turn me off more than she does; they're the type who attack anyone who dares breathe a word of criticism, even when it's valid. To call me an anti and say I'm deliberately translating negatively to feed my own anti bias based on this translation is more offensive than anything I've ever said about Gu Hye-sun, and I'm pretty insulted given how much time I spent on it.

Also, here's the word "jack of all trades" in the Korean dictionary, which is the term used in the article.
http://endic.naver.com/krenEntry.nhn?entryId=26d334259f264afaaadb98da7106526f&query=%ED%8C%94%EB%B0%A9%EB%AF%B8%EC%9D%B8
(Tip: If the phrase isn't followed by "master of none" -- and it's not in this article -- then it's not an insult. The term jack of all trades was in existence long before that additional modifier got tacked on.)

If that's the basis of your complaint against me, I advise you to learn some Korean and get over your defensiveness.

javabeans,

I have a huge amount of appreciation for all the time and effort you take to translate articles for your readers. Dramabeans is a huge asset to the foreign kdrama fanbase. Those who don't appreciate it, those who make completely unfounded and ridiculous criticisms of you and your website, can fuck off. To accuse you of disliking Gu Hye Sun is one thing - to accuse you of underhanded journalism is another, and it isn't okay.

So, thanks for all the work you do. Your supporters and your readers - and there are a lot of us - are grateful every day for it!

Well, different people have different opinions of hyesun but I feel that sometimes it is really good to be mindful of her feelings. Try putting ourselves in her shoes and maybe we can understand her better She doesn't deserve to have all those personal attacks on her. I personally admire her for the courage to do what she wants or dreams of doing in her life without fearing the consequences. She has my respect and admiration and YES she is my most fave artiste. I sincerely wish that all her heart's' desires and dreams will come true one day. Hyesun, do continue what you love doing and to your movie"Magic" success and more success!!!! Well, different people have so many different opinions of Hyesun. I feel that it is sometimes good to just pause and think for a moment and just be a little mindful of her feelings. Why not try putting ourselves in her shoes and maybe we can understand her better. I personally deeply admire her courage to pursue her dreams, passion , ambitions in her life despite knowing the consequences. Yet she has never allowed herself to be put down by the challenges that she has anticipated in the journey ahead. She knows that she lives life once so why not make the best out of it. Truly one admirable lady at her age which has earned my due respect and admiration. So Hyesun , do continue what you love doing and here is wishing you more blessings and success to your movie!!! Rachel 4274,

I don't think that all the criticisms of Gu Hye Sun are necessarily "personal attacks." She's doing all of these things professionally, and in the public eye. The fame she has gained is the reason that she is able to get into things like writing, art, directing, music, etc. Every time an actor has an art exhibit, an artist doesn't. (Not to say that galleries don't have legitimate reasons for doing this, but I haven't seen very many celebrity art exhibits that would ever see the light of day without the celebrity's name attached.)

Gu Hye Sun is a celebrity and a professional whose work is public and a fair target for criticism. (I like to think that she would agree with that.) Such criticism is not inherently mean-spirited or personal. When a drama is badly written and gets justly criticized for it, no one complains that those criticisms are personal attacks against the writer(s). (At least, I've never seen it happen, though people might disagree with the negative criticisms.)

That said, I respect Gu Hye Sun's hard work, and I wish the best for her, too. But I do not think her fans should expect her to be some kind of "sacred cow" (Note: I'm not insulting her - look up this English idiom if you aren't familiar with it!) who is beyond criticism.

If a person thinks that any of GHS's work is less than excellent and says so, that person should not have to endure accusations of being an "anti" or making personal attacks. In javabeans' case, she did not even make a single criticism of GHS in this post, but people are still accusing her of purposefully and dishonestly translating the article to make it sound more negative. THAT is the type of personal attack that needs to stop. Unless someone can back it up with proof (which I highly doubt), it is simply inexcusable.

I...CAN...NOT...BELIEVE...the comments, or should I say, the accusations
written about javabeans in this thread. Prejudiced? Her?

She allows people to visit her home ~ http://www.dramabeans.com
and permits us nobodies to say whatever we want, as long as we use
polite language and respect other people's opinions. This must be too
difficult a restriction for some people to follow, unfortunately.

Believe me, if I were the owner/ administrator/ web master of this site,
I would have hit the delete button on many more occasions than javabeans
has ever done. Which prooves that javabeans is fair, un-biased, and a lot
more tolerant than I am.

I think a sincere apology is in order, from the people who threw out these
insults. Or will you cowards hide behind the curtain of computer anonymity?

~~~~~~~~~~~
Oh, and by the way, I wasn't going to bother to comment on this subject, but
I think that the fabulously brilliant, multi-talented Miss Gu should go back to school.
Although she feels that this is unnecessary, she ought to attempt to fill some of the black holes in her education.
Hard work, ambition, multi-tasking, reaching out in new directions = WONDERFUL.
How to ruin the whole effect of this make-do busy-ness in an interview = BRAGGING.
Quote: "At home I help with the housework, and I train the five dogs I'm raising."
Really?
Does she bring the five dogs to the set, and tell the dogs not to bark during filming?"
I guess she forgot to mention that she's learning tap dancing while she sleeps?
And how are the secret diplomatic discussions with North Korea coming along?
Cut me a break.
Miss Gu may, or may not, be talented in many fields.
But I have this life-long abhorrance of people who are only expert at bragging,
and using their fame to get to the front of the line, with publishers, galleries, etc.
I wanted to enjoy this article. I thought that it would be inspiring for young people
to follow Miss Gu's lead. I was wrong.
Instead, I'll close my comment with a Latin phrase, learned during my formal education........*** "Per aspera ad astra." ***
It should translate as ~ "People who toot their own horn, make terrible music."
But what it really means is ~ "Through adversity, to the stars."
Thank you, javabeans.
In my book ~ you're the star.
I hated her acting in Boys Ove Flowers. Her reactions seemed forced plus the role does not match her personality. She's a "sweet and lovable girl-next-door" type, which is entirely opposite that of Geum Jan Di's (Makino's) character in the manga. She would have pulled it off well if she were cast as Ga-Eul.
@80 spogami ~ thank you.
As I wrote, I didn't originally plan to comment on GHS's interview.
But that statement about........"and I train the five dogs I'm raising"
really got to me.
I think that it would be very interesting to read an interview with
whatever person is REALLY training those 5 dogs, which sounds
pretty much to me like a full-time job. Not to be crude about it,
but you would need to spend a considerable amount of time
each day ~ just picking up the daily collection of "puppy cookies"
from the Gu family back yard / property......let alone the necessary
time for washing, grooming, medical check-ups, or just walking
the five pooches. And training, too? GHS does all this, when, exactly?
OH.......
Did I forget to mention the (true) fact that when I was 8 years old,
and in the 3rd grade, for our school's annual Christmas pagent,
I RECITED THE POEM ~ " 'TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS" ~
~ ALL BY MYSELF ~ AND I DID A PERFECT JOB OF IT. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
I'm sure that you read the many articles that appeared in newspapers :)
worldwide, about my amazing performance, prooving conclusively :)
that I'm much better than you. I was so good, that I impressed even me. :)
Stay cool everyone ~ and take care.
firstly, i`m proud to say that i`ll continue to ADMIRE & LOVE Goo Hye Sun behind all these things..she`ll remain to be the person that i`ll look up to & will stay as an inspiration..
as an ardent supporter of her, whenever i take my first glances at any article, news or comments, i could easily view the negative words, lines or phrases thrown on her..it`s not that it is the first thing that i purposely do as if i`m expecting to read some but there is that eagerness & excitement within me to always read better ones..i know she`s not an exemption to any criticisms & prejudice but i just hope & this i continue to pray that somehow people may realize how painful it is to be accused & treated wrongly despite seeing her true intentions & purposes..i tried to read each affirmative & encouraging reactions & every uplifting lines delivered are all worth it..for as long as Goo Hye Sun continues to do the things that she loves & dreams of without jeopardizing others, she could count & trust on my support..i`ll stick to my belief that the happiest of people don't necessarily have the best
of everything, they just make the most of everything that comes
along their way..and we view Hye Sun in that context..
so here`s for our dearest Hye Sun...
"Dream what you want to dream, go where you want to go,
be what you want to be. Because you have only one life and
one chance to do all the things you want to do. Good luck in all your chosen endeavors.."
i`ll better end this one up with these sayings..
"A careless word may kindle strife. A cruel word may wreck
a life. A timely word may level stress. But a loving word may
heal and bless."
"The real art of conversation is not only to say the right thing at the right time, but also to leave unsaid the wrong thing at the tempting moment. "
thanks to all who opted to stay at Goo Hye Sun`s side..bless everyone !!!
And she is so brave to do all things she wanna do, i can see she is trying her best to make her dreams come true, she devote all her ability for art with her heart, her soul and her talent. She insprires me , she makes me believe that if you really make an effort, you will feel happy whether or not you succeed. So people dont comprehend and able to find how beautiful she is inside and outside, stop criticizing her
#85 ~ water sign
Please re-read my post of #78......
I wrote that when someone tries new areas of interest, it's.....WONDERFUL.
What I found distasteful was the BRAGGING that accompanied this interview.
Rather than being an inspiration, I think that all of these "accomplishments"
are a direct result of GHS's being a famous actress. Therefore, HER BOOK
gets published, HER DRAWINGS get an art gallery showcase, and she is
given an opportunity to direct a film.
I feel that Gu Hye Sun should have at least been honest in this interview,
and acknowledge that it was HER FAME that opened these doors for her.
Some nobody, with ten times the talent, gets nothing. And instead of GHS being an inspiration, this "easy method through fame" would cause a great
deal of frustration among true artists, or anyone trying to match these varied,
and numerous "accomplishments."
#86 ~ datiki
You wrote that you love the way GHS talks and expresses her thoughts through interviews. Could you please re-read GHS's answer to the interview question:
Q: "But don't you still need education?"
I've read her "answer" several times, and it still doesn't make sense to me.
She neither says "yes," "no," or even "maybe." (Locked up in my thoughts?)
Q: "What gave you the opportunity to direct?'
She decided to try it? Is it really that simple, AND EASY to become a director?
I'm sure that you both will continue to praise GHS as a Renaissance woman.
I respectfully disagree.
i am just here mainly to freely express my side..i haven`t mentioned anyone`s name..actually, due to some misinterpretations, there arise the misunderstandings..if i could only voice it out, i`ll try to deliver it in the most humble way..if you could only read my piece slowly & in a calm manner & absorb my emotions & sensitivity..i just try my hardest to be as open-minded as i can..again, this line might be misconstrued once again..i`m trying to be picky with my words as not to offend anybody..i otherwise respect everybody`s opinion..i understand how Goo Hye Sun`s supporters feel..again & again, nothing has changed about how i honestly feel towards her..my SYMPATHY for her rather emerges & getting in its peak..i think this sympathy that many people feel for her with all the bashings & undue perceptions that she received due to bof somehow helped in a positive way..she won`t be where she is right now without the people who continue to trust & believe in her..she has been so expressive on how she`s been grateful & lucky to part of BOF & possess the fame that she is reaping until now..recently, i find some mothers who try to come out & air their love for this girl..if these moms could feel this true affection in her, i wouldn`t wonder if younger guys & gals do..actually, i`ve read some of the articles that hit me most, why i`m convinced that she`s pulled me in her interviews like what others experience the same..we`re not treating her as a "holy cow" as the term is used..i`ve read her openness & confession regarding her stubbornness, laziness, clumsiness & familiarity to alcohol, etc..we are all but human bound to inheret imperfections & make flaws..no one is an exemption in this regard..
again, thanks to javabeans coz i read that she made few frank comments in defense of Goo Hye Sun..more power to this place..
Lots of risks and consequences and you were able to endure it. not like other people,shoved and ditch their God given talent in one corner.i have so much admiration in you,its never too late to have a formal education.Getting married and having a family sometimes comes unexpectedly.Just continue dreaming and be happy in all the things that you do. And i suggest,be healthy and gain some more weight pleaseeeeeeee! Just a Mommie advised!
To all her detractors. I still believe Ku Hye Sun is a great person and artist. That's the reason why she is UP there on that screen and you are DOWN there on your chair watching her. Ku Hye Sun fighting!
@62
I absolutely agree with you. I wonder why these antis are even reading articles about her when they don't like her. Spare yourself some stress and stop reading then. Are you masochists or something? But as for me I love Goo Hye Sun. We belong to the HAPPY AND POSITIVE crowd.
Hye Sun is indeed a very talented girl. Not everyone of us has the kind of attitude that she possess. The passion she shows in all her various works is just amazing. Ms Goo, hats off to you! May your star shines more!
I watched her in BOF and The Musical, but I feel even if she captures attention, she cannot go beyond roles of teenager in triangle love. In BOF, I don't think she was well directed. I don't know if her exaggerated behaviors as for eating, walking are something culturally normal in the Korean society. But it created a feeling of reject toward her character and her as actress even if it's fictional. Also, there was a lack of chemistry between the 2 main characters. In the movie, the Musical, this love chemistry is rendered. She definitively has talent that needs to grow ... She should stay with comedies, but interpret a more divers roles. Sometimes while watching her acting, I wonder if she could do better as an actress.
