SBS’s OB-GYN features a parade of cameos
by javabeans
SBS’s new medical drama OB-GYN is piling on the cameo appearances as celebrities make guest spots as patients. The drama is doing middling numbers in the 10% range but has met with generally favorable response. The first two episodes last week featured actress-MC Hyun Young, and adds several more guests with this week’s episodes: Story of a Man‘s Han Yeo-woon, comedienne-actress Kim Mi-ryeo, actress Hwang Hyo-eun (Assorted Gems, Style), and actor Sung Ji-ru (A Star’s Lover).
The three actresses’ spots can be seen in the third episode, which aired yesterday (the 10th) and notably carried a 19+ age label — unusual for broadcast television. Perhaps it has to do with the nature of the medical conditions, given that this drama takes place in the field of obstetrics and gynecology.
For instance, Kim Mi-ryeo’s ailment shows symptoms similar to vaginitis, while Han Yeo-woon suffers from MRKH syndrome, which is a condition marked by deformations of the vagina. Hwang Hyo-eun, meanwhile, plays a pregnant woman who ends up giving birth at a grocery store. Thursday’s episode features Sung Ji-ru as the husband of a brain-dead pregnant wife. In a particularly emotional scene, he says goodbye to his wife go after their baby is born.
Hyun Young appeared last week as a pregnant celeb wife dealing with a possible Down Syndrome baby:

@samsooki: Ditto! I was checking out her profile on wiki.d-addicts yesterday and saw her listed for this drama. But I figured it was simply a cameo... I want to see her star in a regular drama as one of the main cast (not one of those long family dramas that I never get around to watch). Crossing fingers that she'll get a good next role ^^

@ Samsooki & vis: Same here. I want to see more of Han Yeo-woon. Check out Pure Suni/Sooni (a Drama City episode) if you haven't. It's pretty good...

Dear JB, can you give us some recaps for this drama. I really like this show. I just watched the first two episodes. And I'm totally hooked. I was crying several times when I watched this drama (esp episode 2). Anyway, this drama has great plots, great casting, and also directing.

Honestly the acting is mediocre at best but I am totally hooked. I lost count how many times I was bawling my eyes out watching the first two episodes. And even though I am a medical student I just can't stand all those gory scenes!! They are just too real and too BLOODY!!

Oh cool! I'm glad I'm not the ONLY one watching this drama! Hehe!

Just finished up watching ep 4! OMG! I baaawled! Sung Ji-ru! Magnificent acting! Considering he started off in the episode as a hapless traffic cop, with a pretty funny car chase scene, it's ironic that his pregnant wife meets a car accident. Really sad.
- Love the background score and OST.
- Ko Joo-won's character is far too kind-hearted/gentlemanly for the boring female lead - and she is so using him!
(Yes, this is a very rare kdrama where the main leads are meh, but all the rest of the cast are awesome!)
- Love how episodes 3 and 4 began focusing on other character backstories, like Song Joong-ki's romance with the pretty nurse, so cute! And I love their bickering, very typical kdrama lead style.
- Episode 3 - ick! All the sexual health-related stuff was a bit much, blurgh! No wonder it had an age restriction.

I saw a preview of this series after finishing WISFC and it drew my attention. I hope it offers something up to par what ER (U.S. series) formats as medical drama.

I'm watching ep.03 by now, and if this series can offer forewarning (aka viewer's discretion) in the beginning of ever episode respectively to its every episode's content then it would be a more ethical agreement between their broadcast network and tv viewers. The network needs to seriously re-edit that before the dvd collection comes out.
@ 11: It is currently on viikii. Try again.
