Jeon Ji-hyun cast in Snow Flower with Zhang Ziyi

It had been speculated that a drama would be Jeon Ji-hyun‘s next project following her attempt to go global in Blood: The Last Vampire, but on December 6, her management company, Sidus HQ, confirmed her next role: the movie adaptation of Lisa See’s bestselling novel Snow Flower and the Secret Fan. It will be directed by Joy Luck Club‘s Wayne Wang, co-stars (and is produced by) Zhang Ziyi, and is to be produced in English.

Snow Flower and the Secret Fan is set in 19th-century China and tells the story of two best friends, Lily and Snow Flower. The plot involves a secret language called Nu Shu, which is used only among women, and Zhang will take the lead role of Snow Flower. Although the book doesn’t overtly draw the women’s friendship as lesbian, their relationship has sensual overtones and includes a nude scene. (This scene is the reason that Shu Qi reportedly turned down the role.)

Weird photograph, doesn't look like JJH or ZZY to me, who is she meant to be? The movie sounds like one of those "French-likey" type of movie, shall wait and see.

It's interesting that Shu Qi turned down the role considering her previous work in the adult industry.

Great book -- i remember thinking this is the sort of book that'd adapt well into a movie and seems like they think so too :) Hmmm...for once i can actually see each in their role ZZ def has the vaguely aristocratic but "blinkered" air about her and JJH has the self-aware, wandering, and "misfit" air so that al fits. This is a very visual book and I hope this movie at the very least is pretty to look at!

I may actually see this one!

She's one gorgeous girl but i wonder why she doesn't seem to make a drama series...i liked her in Daisy and other films but it'll be nice to see her at length in a drama project. She's a talented actress aside from her exotic beauty. I can't wait to see this movie!

Oh I have this book. Been a while since I last read it though. I cant really remember a nude scene though there's that part where they are drawing on each other but I thought the were wearing their under garments or something.

Interesting picture. Looks like a mix of Ziyi and Gianni.
Shu Qi diid some soft porn in the past and that's nothing these days since everyone seems to be snapping naked pictures of themselves and posting them on the internet looking for viewers. I am so glad SQ has become a big star in spite of her difficult beginning. She has gone on to become a fine accomplished actor. Just watch her in Hou Hsiao Hsein films if you don't believe me.

Jeon Ji-hyun was one of those actress that i was exposed to when i stared off watching Korean Movies. I love her in llamare and My sassy girl. Till date after watching tones of Korean movie and drama i can vouch that She the best looking korean actress who can act. Well she and Zhang Ziyi as a pair. That got to be
hot !!!!!!

I agree with Shu Qi. I had thought she had done nudity before but I guess she's trying to get away from that image. I think I would have preferred to see her in this though, although maybe it would have been too much star-power/rivalry going on? Aren't they both big stars in their own country? If JJH comes in then it would be different playing fields.

I don't know, I always got the vibe that Zhang Ziyi wasn't one to share screen power but of course I could be terribly wrong.

Huh. I thought her next project was going to be the remake of Zettai Kareshi. Dramawiki still lists her as the lead. Hmm. Ah well.

Aargh, not that I dislike Zhang Zhiyi or anything (cough) but a nude scene and that actress are synoymous, she's got a pretty seedy image, for sure.

JJH on the other hand, hasn't, she's too cutesy/endearing (ok, maybe not that much) but she stole the show in Daisy, I loved her in that fim.
I would have watched it, but the story doesn't sound appealing to me in the least. A bit sad really, I love HKfilm and Kdramas, if those two worlds were to merge, I wish they would without Zhang Zhiyi being involved--for the second time already.

Ah...I loved the book. Definitely a lesbian undertone. Unfortunately, most books turned into movies are just big disappointment. I love Jeon Ji-hyun in most of her Korean movies but "Blood: The Last Vampire" was just horrible. You all are going to hate me but I prefer a Chinese actress for a chinese role.

Snow Flower and the Secret Fan is a fantastic book. I'm thinking that Zhang Ziyi will play the role of Lily and JJH will take on Snow Flower. Lily is the dominant character in the book so ZZ will probably get a lot more screen time. I'm disappointed that Shu Qi didn't accept the project because, in my mind, she looks exactly like how I imagined Snow Flower to be. I hope JJH will do a good job as Snow Flower.

As for the nudity issue, it's the scene when Lily and Snow Flower are teenagers and they draw nu shu characters on each other. It's a very sensual scene for sure but I also don't think that it requires full on nudity.

Jeon Ji Hyun! Synonymous with goddess. I'm dying to see her in a drama, but I wish her luck in this movie too.

It would have been ironic for Shu Qi and ZZY to do a movie together. After all, Shu Qi was offered the Crouching Tiger part, and she turned it down (and fired manager for that too.) (DOH!!!) But at least she did the seminal masterpiece Transporter and that other lesbian work-of-art So Close. (Also Millenium Mambo and Three Times weren't too shabby either. Though Hsiao-Hsien's fascination with her as a muse proper seems as counterintuitive as Scorsese and Dicaprio.)

"I wish they would without Zhang Zhiyi being involved–for the second time already."

Fourth time actually. Musa, Sophie's Revenge, and a cameo in My Wife is a Gangster.

"JJH on the other hand, hasn’t, she’s too cutesy/endearing (ok, maybe not that much) but she stole the show in Daisy, I loved her in that fim."

And JJH has famously never kissed in a movie or drama. So, for My Sassy Lesbian to go straight to a nude scene. Uhm, can you say, Body Double? :D

The biggest block, though, will be the language. Given such a sensitive story, you would need them to be really communicating as actors.

Guess i'm kinda cynical because this project really should have gone to a Chinese actress. Jeon Ji Hyun's MSG image still lives on in China (among China guys like 5 years ago, SHK = "Dream Girlfriend", JJH = "Dream Girlfriend for One Wild Weekend"), so I can understand the casting. But it seems so out-of-date to me.

Hmm, I need to re-read the book because I didn't get any lesbian vibes from it at all...maybe I've been reading so much and one book is blending into another...

I wonder if it'll generate the same amount of controversy that the "Brideshead Revisited" film did for making subtext TEXT. Two women being naked together, goodness! I'm definitely going to keep this one on my radar.

That was a great book - the best read of that author, for me anyway. Who will play the children? 1/3 of the story is about the child. Men are not so much a part of the book guess they will adapt :P

thanks for the news

I'm going to take the whole nudity thing w/ a grain of salt.

JJH won't even do an on screen kiss, so I'm thinking the "nudity" will be more like giving the impression of nudity.

Shu Qi turned down a role because of a NUDE SCENE?!?

That blows my mind. That's like hearing Jack Nicholson turning down a movie because he has to scream in the role. Or Jackie Chan turning down a movie because he might have to do kung fu in one scene.

Seriously, Shu Qi, I still remember your performance in Sex & Zen II. Frankly, any role where you're NOT wearing a 14 inch prosthetic demon penis is a STEP UP.

Meh, I'll pass. I'm a little tired of all these English-language movies/books about "ancient" China that always seems to revolve around foot-binding and how oppressed women were.

19th-century Europe wasn't much better with women being disfigured from corsets and yet when you have movies/books in that era the tone is so different.

I loved the book! It was an emotional read. I hope the film will be well-adapted to the book. lol at shu qi turning it down, but it's okay- she would look pretty similar to ziyi. I can see JJH as snow flower. looking foward to the film!
