Bae Yong-joon’s drama canceled

Bad news for fans anticipating his comeback: Bae Yong-joon‘s drama Drops of God has been dropped due to several production issues. A source with the production company Keyeast, of which Bae is a major shareholder, said on December 5, “Even if the drama were to be produced, it would be difficult to keep up the level of quality.”

One of the problems facing the production is the issue of product placement; the names of famous wines are not allowed to be used, which is problematic since the original makes many references to real brands. The Keyeast rep explained many of their people argued that it would ruin the effect if fake names were used, and they would not be able to achieve the quality level they are striving for.

In August 2008, Keyeast had bought the rights to the popular wine-themed Japanese manga, written by Tadashi Agi (a pseudonym for the writing team). In fact, the writers are said to be fans of Yonsama and had modeled their character Tomine Issei after him. However, now Bae Yong-joon will have to push back his drama comeback, which would have been his first acting role since 2007’s Legend.

Too bad.. I believe product placement is an important factor in a drama, but it has to be balanced. Too much of it would make a drama a long commercial, but creating fake names, usually makes me cringe, because no matter how "covered" the labels are (in cars for example), it is still WAY obvious what the product actually is.

Wow, that's really too bad. I really enjoyed Drops of God the manga. But I'm glad that they made the call to drop it when they realized that they couldn't use the wine names. Why does Korea have such a harsh law against product placement?

This manga was produced in Japan as the drama Kami no Shizuku last year, and while the acting was either wooden (cough Kamenashi cough) or over-the-top (the Issei character!), the wine information was really pretty good. We got all of our fellow wine snobs watching the show, and afterwards we would look up the wines (some of them were close to $1,000 a bottle!) on the net and read more about them. Some of the wines we had tasted before, and that made it even more fun.

For wine people it was a great show, but I guess it was dull for everyone else because Kami no Shizuku got horrible ratings. It is hard for me to imagine BYJ in the secondary lead - I think his character would easily take over the story - but not being able to mention actual wines is the kiss of death. "Golly! Wine X tastes so much better than wine Y!" Total snoozefest.

Interesting, had no idea he was going to be making a Korean version of Kami no Shizuku. It's odd that he is playing the second male lead character (Issei)... although imagining him as the main character is a little bit odd, especially since I have seen the Kame version, I have some image of a younger person playing the main character (probably true in the manga too). So I guess have Yonsama playing Issei makes more sense.

And yes, Kami no Shizuku was quite a failure. I tried to stick through it, but even fangirling over Kame goes so far...

Had forgotten they were planning on making a k-version of this. Didn't manage to finish Kami no Shizuku even though it was only 9 episodes. Kame seemed totally bored too with it too. Product placement certainly wasn't a problem in the j-version. Too bad, I would have loved to see Yon-sama back on the screen!

It's been awhile since I've seen BYJ and I'm struck by how much he and Kim Hyun Joong resemble one another. KHJ, take a good look...you'll age nicely = )

I am so sad that project was cancelled. I was hoping to see BYJ back on the small screen this year. I know that he has been busy with so many projects and businesses, but he needs to get back on a drama before people start to forget him as an actor.

I've seen pictures and dramas of BYJ when he was younger, Kim Hyung Joong is more handsome. If his acting improves and he chooses good projects, he could be the next Yonsama. because he has a lot of charisma

Can't use the wine names? Oh that's too bad, that's practically the essence of the show. I think this would have been pretty decent had it pushed through. BYJ has a way of molding his roles to him. But I guess it's better to have no drama at all rather than have a poor quality drama with imitation wines.

Like the other Kame fan girls here, I wasn't able to finish the Japan version too. :( I can't give a full opinion about the J-version, but I do know that Kame was so bland that it probably crept up to the rest of the show. He just didn't fit the character, he's more suited to roles like in his coming drama Yamato Nadeshiko.

Honestly, I had no idea he was preparing for a drama.

So it's like, "What!? HUH!? BAE YONG JOONG WAS PREPARING FOR DRAMA COMEBACK!?"

Than I hear voices in my head going: Shame on you Biscuit! You call yourself Yon-sama's loyal fan!?

*sigh*

Anyways, I actually didn't care for the manga so I didn't bother to try the J-drama... so I'm not quite sure if I'm completely dissapointed in the K-Drama version not coming to life. But at the same time, I want BYJ in a drama this year! Although I wanted him in a melodrama more... or a role being a completely dark villain.... *siiiiiigh*

At the same time, if he's going to be in a drama it's better that they're making sure the quality doesn't drop. If he's coming back to tv, I've waited 3 years for him and I want the drama to be completely ready before airing!

@Lumi: Actually, I somehow can totally imagine Hyun Joong being the next Yon Sama.... he has the smile, the face, the love-able husband like qualities.... just needs to touch up on the acting!

This may be good for me.... I need a younger Yon-sama closer to my age................... "Joong-sama~"

oh dang, it would've been a much anticipated drama, seeing as Japan failed it's live action version. i've heard tons about the manga, but had been too lazy to actually follow up on it. would've loved to see it produced as a kdrama.

shame.

Ya I miss BYJ too.....I agree he is more like a businessman than an actor nowadays. if he doesnt make a comeback soon, ya many fans will be turning their focus on upcoming like Jang Guek Suk. Am glad he is mentoring KHJ....hope to see more dramas by KHJ, BYJ and JGS........
