Oh, you people. Bora must live so that her oppa (and samsooki and me) won't die. It's so simple, really. ;-)
Also, welcome lebcora, to the best website in the whole world! The Save Bora team is small, but mighty. And if that makes no sense, don't worry about it. By the following Thursday, which is when OT Friday officially ends (unless you've been lurking for a while and know this already), we'll be off on a whole new tangent. Glad you decided to dive in!
T-2 hours and counting!
@ mishane
So funny - I could NOT understand the hair in What Planet Are You From either, but before I knew it I loved my Bok-shil and her Pippi Longstocking hair, and so whenever they changed it, even though it wasn't often, I was sad.
Also, let me add my two cents in to praise Return of Iljimae. I absolutely love that drama and think it's one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen. Just like Hong Gil Dong...after each of those two dramas ended I was so thankful that I watched them.

@emeldy
I think it's absolutely awesome Ninja Assassin is being shown in Delhi. Actually I've been surprised that there haven't been more East Asian films/drama being shown in India...I hope that if Indian audiences start watching watching kdramas they will start pushing for better serials. LIke if they saw Dae Jang Geum or Return of Iljimae they would realize how big of a debacle Ekta Kapoor's Mahabarat was last year (2 years ago?). I have mused in the past with my sister what I would do if I could take over an Indian channel...and if I could get actors like Kay Kay Menon back on the small screen again...Though am glad that there is some new blood of directors/actors in the film-y world...and that the diaspora is churning out some amazing stuff!
@jtinma
I really like JIN and I think it might be one of the best dramas of the season. Actually this season of jdoramas is really good. But the romance factor at least until episode 8 takes the backseat, but it's pretty interesting and the story is tight and the pace picks up.
This thread moves so fast...but I've gotta run to work...will catchup later
And I also had only a vague idea what chocolate abs meant, so it was a good question...thanks for answering you all (and LOL at samsooki's reply)

@ everyone who has seen it:
I would love to se Ninja Assassin soon! I hate being stucked here in a cold Europe, where ninja movies have been on the big screen... oh let us count the times... never?
I'm kinda thinking of just spontaniously, without even telling my fiancé, move to Cal or some other warm place where all the chill OT people seem to live. :)
There's only one Korean restaurant in the whole country. And that, I think, is the perfect reason for abandoning this empty place and coming souther.
/end of rant.
Has Ninja Assassin been doing good on the big screen?

Also sorta watching Angel's Temptation--part watching, part forwarding. I just want to see BSB get back at the wife, I want to see her face when she finds out it's him. I want BSB's character to be happy with the nurse, but I doubt it's going to be a happy ending...
Upon finishing Dae Jang Geum many, many years ago I decided to avoid sageuks like the plague. However, Chuno is looking so pretty, so I'm currently anticipating it... don't know if I should watch it while it's running or wait until subs are all out.
P.S. I know many have asked, but any recommendations for a City Hall-like romcom?

Haha, I usually don't let bad fashion interfere with my dramas but I have this huge thing about hair. I think hair seriously makes up about 70-80% of hotness in someone (doesn't matter if it's short or long). So it's weird to watch a drama where I think the hairstyle is horrible. For example, it took me a while to get over the main heroine hair in Lawyers Of Korea. *shudder* That perm! So so bad. But then she changed it, and I breathed easier.
When I first skimmed through the episodes of Which Star Are You From, I noticed that her hair was Pippi Longstocking in almost every episode (thanks to the commenter above who said that, I was trying to remember what cultural icon it resembled). It's gonna be a big hard to get used to.
That's probably the only thing I'm really shallow about.
Oh gosh, talking about shallow, Hello! Miss had probably the worst outfits ever. Why do they always have Lee Da Hae dressing like a fool? I want her to be in a modern drama where she gets to wear normal, pretty clothes.

my fall semester officially finished today! whew! However, I'm a bit worried- yesterday for one of my classes, we had two things to write up- one was an assessment (with my name on it) and the other was a prof evaluation (anonymous)- both would be read by the professor. Of course, i forgot to change my pen color and handwriting for the anonymous one! I even crossed things out in the same exact way for both pieces of paper! yikes, so long for anonymity! That was a day of way too many too-stupid-to-live moments for me!
At least I'm back to watching dramas. stayed up a good portion of the night yesterday watching Unstoppable Marriage! I love this sitcom- especially the twists that happen at the end of each episode, which sort of reminds me of the little sageuk parodies at the end of Delightful Girl Chunhyang. I started it last year- but there weren't that many subbed episodes. I am continually amazed by Lee Jung. He was so badass in the earlier singing career
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AyFK3HwiBYo
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rDprzefunOk&feature=related
then an adorable buffoon in Unstoppable Marriage, and then a romantic balladeer after that. The movie version of the sitcom is also really good, but doesn't touch this in terms of comedy and LOL goodness.

it's @Belleza, @ockoala,@ mookie and @ hjkomo (not sure on her ) on the KILL Bora ( something about she didn't deserve Binnie in Snow Queen) vs @ Samsooki and @ langdon ( Save Bora)....it was mostly what OT 112 was about...as for me, I just stay off the side, and ready to render first aid to anybody who is injured in this "blood bath"...YIKES
@ockoala
I'm not sure if you read the post I wrote late OT112, but I gave you more info regarding my Winter Melon soup...

@103 lb_tmi (and Carrie) -
ok. i’m lost. what the heck is all this “kill bora” “save bora” smack talk. what have i missed in my three weeks of heaven on earth? explica me, porsomemore.
Ok, I'll explain.
A long time ago, in a galaxy far away, an ancient civilization rose to great heights of power and prosperity. They grew so evolved and advanced that they mastered many technologies that are yet to be discovered here on Earth - such as faster-than-light travel, faster-than-light communication, toaster oven controls that don't burn toast, and the art of the television drama and melodrama.
The secrets of this highly advanced civilization, however, were nearly all wiped out when a cataclysmic event destroyed the entire home planetary system inhabited by these beings, and only a scattered few, less than a billionth of a percentage point of these people survived to populate other worlds, searching for their brethren and a new home for themselves.
Dissension quickly came upon those who were the survivors, however, as almost none could recreate the vast power and technology that had come so easily to them before. Some could not understand the ancient scripts which held the secrets to the power so vast that it could control entire star systems, entire galaxies.
And so the survivors banded together into two polar groups, waging a terrible fratricidal war that lasted centuries during The Scattering, further depleting the numbers of the once proud race. One group, the "Save Bora" faction believed that the character in the k-drama Snow Queen, Bo Ra, should be revered and not panned, while the haters, the bad group, the "Bora Must Die" faction, believed that nothing good can come out of the actress who played the character, Sung Yuri. If you cannot believe how this came to pass, well, then you haven't mastered space-time continuums...
And so, even to this day, this battle wages.
I am among the last of my kind, the keeper of the flame of knowledge, whose secrets I cannot unlock without keys long since gone from this universe, who believe that Bora should be saved.
Belleza, Mookie and their minions are in the opposite faction, seeking only to destroy and to gain the artifacts of power that they so desperately seek.
Which faction will you side with? Will you remain neutral? This battle has been waged across galaxies, across millennia.... who knows what will happen in the end. Your input, your choice, could tip the scales one way or another....

I don't anyone watching this old drama.......but if you want to watch the best historical Kdrama EVER...then watch
Dae Jang Geum or JEWEL IN THE PALACE.
I never got to watch this till now, but i heard from tons of people praising it to no end and I can see why......the music, cinematography, direction, dialogue and above all THE ACTING is just magnificent. I have not seen a drama done to this scale ever.....I love this drama, and I'm almost done. it's a 70 episode commitment, but I promise you'll breeze past the first 30-40 easily!~~
Also, other recommendations for those looking - I'm going to give some different ones aswell besides the usual romance/comedy:
Autumn's Concert (tw) - absoutely love this one for the chemistry between the leads
Buzzer Beat (japan) - the simplicity in the love story drawed me in..
Liar Game (season 1 finished, season 2 currently airing) - for those looking for something different, the entire show is based on mind games and manipulating...its VERY INTERESTING...and makes you really think...
Orthos no Inu (japan) - super interesting if you're into the supernatural and suspence, I loved this one cause Ryu was just awesome. I would recommend this if you want different...really good
ARE THERE ANY LAKORN (Thai dramas) WATCHERS HERE???
@Taohua - Ekta Kapoor, that name gives me the shivers. IMO, her dramas need to be banned, talk about feminist backlash, all they do is oppress women in her shows...ugh. And I'm Indian as well btw ~lol.

@ langdon-unni
Wouldn't you like to know? :-P
He he, how can I make my unni suffer, I'm not so cold-hearted. I've actually not watched an episode of Robbers last night, what with barreling past the 500 mark with belleza claiming FIRST like a thief in the night with a meaningless post, wintermelon soup, the awesome Blue-ness of Avatar, where the heck is IRIS airing in SoCal, and the general surrealness of OT on a Thursday night before said OT forever becomes dormant in the recesses of our hearts.
I did end up catching the end of YB on LA18, as it was date night with hubby, and then afterwards, passed out shivering in the cold.
I must say though, it is out of sheer love and respect for my drama sisters hjkomo and langdon that I am even willing to finish watching Robbers. I mean, 8 episodes in and I'm still not feeling it, I fear for my drama-loving heart I'm either going to disowned or else I've lost the loving feeling.
Up until now - I lay blame for the wonkness of Robbers on my beloved LDH - a perfect combination of wretchedly awkward acting and really really badly written character. Jang Hyuk, he's doing wonderfully and I both want to smack him and kiss him, does that make sense?

Or, the short version is this:
I think Sung Yuri is a cutie, and I think she did a great job in Snow Queen, a Korean drama series starring her and Hyun Bin.
Sung Yuri's character in Snow Queen is named "Bora" and her character is afflicted with a chronic illness which makes her very sick all the time. Hyun Bin's character's fate is entwined with the fate of Bora, and the story itself is quite moving and beautiful.
Sung Yuri has, in the past, been a lightning rod for criticism due to her perceived or actual lack of acting skills. She started out as the junior member of the k-pop group, FINKL, and was generally just regarded as a cute face. This stereotype was not changed with her roles in her first few dramas, where she failed to impress.
Her breakout role came with Snow Queen, playing the role of the temperamental and cold Bora, although some would argue that SYR's breakout role came with her next project, Hong Gil Dong, a much beloved drama series.
***
The Open Thread "war" is just a fun way to pass the time. People here know that I think that Sung Yuri did a great job in Snow Queen, and they also think (maybe) that my opinion is biased because I think she's way cute.
My feelings for SYR notwithstanding, I do think that the character of Bora was well done, and so I am sometimes a bit "o-bah" in the way I defend SYR here on Open Thread.
I have no idea who started the "Bora Must Die" slogan, but I think it was langdon813 who countered with the "Save Bora" chant.

Indeed, a tragic, tragic war that has raged the Kingdom of Shilla since last week. Cingdoc has wept bitter tears over the lost lives . . . and Sarah's probably shaking her head as to WTH has happened to her lovely blog. :D
Yeah, seriously, the Bora campaign turned into last week's OT meme. I mentioned how a lot of viewers wanted Bora to die in Snow Queen. Then Mookie translated that into BORA MUST DIE. And then lo, 500 posts. Wow. :D
Samsooki -- I do recommend you give "Greatest Historical Drama in The History of the Universe!" 1000YL a shot. I mean, to not have seen 1000YL and call yourself a Sung Yu Ri fan? Just not becoming of you, good sir!! :D
"Liar Game (season 1 finished, season 2 currently airing) – for those looking for something different, the entire show is based on mind games and manipulating…its VERY INTERESTING…and makes you really think…"
And much credit to the show that for S2, they finally made Nao SMART. Still naive as ever, but at least she has good ideas going into each round. Also the puzzles are really, really hard this time. I still don't understand how he was able to read the deck by ordering X number of shuffles.
"Dae Jang Geum or JEWEL IN THE PALACE."
One of the few shows where if it's airing on TV -- any given episode -- I sit down and watch and get all happy. And when the children's song comes up . . . yup me too.

I shall endeavor to be impartial and explain what took 50 posts in OT to suss out:
1. Bora must die at the end of Snow Queen because we Binne-lovers, young, old, and samsooki-alike, paid money to watch Binne mope, grief, suffer and cry his way through SQ. That was the fan service. And if little Bora didn't die, well, then we Binner-lovers would not have gotten the full effect of the Binnie and received the catharsis we so desperately craved. So Bora needed to be sacrificed for the good of the universe. Capiche?
2. The save Bora movement is just SYR-loving samsooki and kindhearted langdon confusing the off Bora movement with offing the cute as a button SYR. Which I'd never condone, heck, I even watched One Fine Day for SYR (I had no idea who this Gong Yoooooooo dude was back then).

Hello, all! LOL forever, as always, at the antics of Samsooki and the motley of OT regulars who have a new 'club' every time I pop in. I'm with you, Papa Samsooki (our resident appa gom?), SAVE BORA!!! I honestly don't get the people who said they couldn't take Snow Queen because of Sung Yuri. She wasn't the best actress ever but I've seen much, much worse, and her and Hyunbin (will. NOT. call. him. Binnie) were killing it at the end. I've never been so shattered by a drama's ending, dear God.
So, drama-talk! Watched the first 2 eps of Christmas yesterday and I loved it insanely. I checked in at Javabeans' article on how ratings for the reruns were higher than the first showing and every commenter said they'd have rathered they kept going with the teen actors instead of having them grow up and I am right there with them; my enthusiasm has gone down now they've grown up. This is the first time I've seen Go Soo in anything and I know he has a lot of fans so don't go all Iris on me but I'm disappointed that he's the older version of Kang Jin. Younger version was emo but had all this anger on the surface, Go Soo's version isn't the same; when he was bantering with his mother (OMG that woman's voice), the smile of mischief makes him rather cute and pretty but other than that the eyes, the eyes! It's like, before anything sad has even happened his eyes are pre-set on emo mode, ready to start bleeding aeternal angst at any moment. Han Ye Seul looks like a doll, and nothing like her younger version. So, it's awesome and the way it's shot is lovely, but I don't know how I'll feel after watching their grownup forms. It promises gorgeous romance though, the characters are fantastic elastic and engaging and it's not the kind of heavy melodrama that makes you want to stab yourself. Even funny moments - ep 1 she wet herself in front of him, ahahaha. <3 Joy.
Also watching Hi My Sweetheart - now I have a raging Show Luo bias. RAGING. IT RAGES. And his dorky version is hysterical and his hot version is hot, but what I love about it is that he changes only on the bare surface - clothes, hair (HAIR!), gets rid of the underbite. He wants to take 'revenge' on her but the first time he meets her to initiate this, he's so nervous he can't face her! And has these ADORABLE dorky asides of spazz, complete with underbite back (she remembers my name! OMG!!!!!! - now be calm, be calm Hsueh Hai, be calm. Jiayou!). Rainie's improvements in acting show and she's adorable as ever, not to mention kickass and tough and sorta lonely and funny and great. All this makes for a lot of squee and a lot of spazz - however, the show lacks a deeper emotional connection, I think. Still, Rainie! And SHOW!!!!! I love Show. I LOVE SHOW. His face when he hears her voice again!!! ihwhrhjkrh
One last comment re Buzzer Beat: The OTP is adorable, the atmosphere of the drama is lovely, KISS OMFG KISS, they're adorably touchy-feely with each other. Keiko steals the show, I love her and her gorgeous long hair and long legs. Yamapi, however, is dead. =/ I'm a Yamapi fan and I love him but it depends on what he's doing. Here, I have no idea what he's doing. He doesn't match up to Keiko and it's disappointing. Also, sorry mishane, his hair is kindof horrible, it makes me think of frizzled dirty ramen. But the OTP and the atmosphere make it wonderfully cute. Also, I hated Aibu Saki in Zettai Kareshi but her 'evil' turn here was kindof awesome.
I'm off to watch Music Bank and maybe finally start Black and White. In the mood for some intensity.

Hi everybody,
I have been reading this thread rather than posting in the last weeks. But when I wonder about something I am surely posting my question here:
As "Kamen Rider" is coming up very often as allusion in dramas, I thought about closing this gap in my education and watch it. But taking a first look there a numerous versions and at second glance the target audience should be around 12 years of age. Can anybody recommend a Kamen Rider version which would be o.k. for an adult to watch? I can take a lot and some Power Ranger Feeling is probably inevitable, but there has to be a "not hazardous to the mental health of a grown up" version.
Have a nice weekend!

I'm watching Otomen... because YB last couple eps writing-wise deflated to chore-ish bland (for me). So I craved me some more fluffity fluff. I've put it down after an ep or 2 over the summer, not because it's not singing to me, just no time.
But Otomen is more than delightful (granted I'm only on ep3). The premise can so easily go Nodame's brand of shtick (nth wrong with it), but it was surprisingly grounded by good acting. Yes Mr. Okada Masaki is my reason for it...but it actually has hints of DEEP plots/philosophies... on gender roles, social norms, girly man, manly girl, cream cakes and crochet.
What turned me into a forever fangirl of Okada Masaki was first, he can act without overacting, then he used his head to really delve into this manga character that is dripping in all the shoujo bishonen cliches on the surface, YET have the heart of any shoujo damsel. So yes, we have a manly looking, kendo master hero, who is a conflicted herbivorous girly man at heart, the damsel in distress...BUT yes, he needed the knightly rescue of our heroine, but he's no pushover and is mighty feisty with his kendo stick. AND he bakes and knits with such a earnest *drawing heart* joy.
just go and droolz at some caps by dangermousie:

and yeah because it's miserably cold and raining...and I'm so not charitable with pouting pets who wore FUR: BORA MUST DIE!!
argh, now I have to go watch LG2 just because I'm Belleza's minion. I'll turn feral if Nao was still Nao.

Only recently I have stopped lurking on this site and posted some short, timid sentences and then quickly scurried back under cover. But your stirring words have brought me forth from the shadows to proudly proclaim my alleigance to the "Save Bora" faction.
I am currently watching Hong Gil Dong and I adore Sung Yuri. Truly, not even the St. Crispen's Day speech can hold a candle to your rhetoric! :)
p.s. Have you read the Foundation series by Azimov?

Thank you for the link to dangermousie's Otomen recap! All the adorableness of Otomen was captured perfectly, spot on recap, bravo.
Otomen is manga-lite with a genuine bona fide heart hidden in its glossy pink depths. When Asuka knitted that baby doggie for the big doggie he retrieved from the trash - I was lost forever, he's just the most *aw, I pinch your cheeks, you darling darling boy* hero I've seen in a long long time.

HTML tags that will work:
Bold: use <strong> </strong> around the word in question
Italics: use <em> </em>
Underline: use <u> </u>
Strikethroughs: use <strike> </strike>But as with anything, HTML tags are best used sparingly! Overdoing it can be annoying to read and actually diminish the emphasis you're going for.

Gee another awesome OT that I have only skimmed......
Re: Chocolate Abs
Samsooki - your 'chocolate ab' definition is classic Samsooki! OMG that is an original and made me LMAO. Unfortuately the boxed chocolate reference made me think straight away of Forrest Gump...but the imagery of a fine (hot) box of chocolates like LBH, Rain etc quickly replaced it. Phew...

When one should be getting out of bed to look for a shortbread recipe, since one is retarded and promised to bake it without checking whether the recipe was still on the fridge door, stays in bed watching YB whilst telling self "but I NEEED to watch the Pig-Rabbit surgery scene (for the umpeeth time!)"
Speaking of YB.....this is a true story
I was watching my YB DVD just to ahem check quality of the DVD the other day. Had it on Korean and english subs.
My mother said 'What is this?'
Quick reply 'See this girl who looks like a nun-to-be (this was Ep 1) she is a nun wannabe, who becomes a guy-band wannabe in place of her plastic surgery delayed twin brother''
When the only response was "Oh....I see' I proceeded to give my mum a run down per scene. 'Live' subtitles (compliments of having watched YB and JB's recaps.
Jump to 2 days later
Mum: Hmm aren't you going to watch that nun series? It was very cute...
I ran to get DVD and set it up for Mandarin/Chinese subtitles.....normally my mother dislikes Mandarin dubbing but when I asked she said "Oh that's ok - mandarin dubbing is fine!' :P
Bamn another YB fan! Now if only I can convince her that I need a pig-rabbit for Christmas....she is not up to that scene yet but who knows SHE might want one too hahaha
Gotta go find that recipe....one with rice flour! Only have an 1hr to go arggghhh

about Snow Queen :
I like Sung Yuri. She is one of the few actresses that can do cute without making me vomit. I also liked Snow Queen and I usually stay away from melodramas. I think she did a good job. In any case not much worse than any other starlet cast for her pretty face.
That said, I think there are two reasons why she and Bora are so hated:
1. Bora isn't really likable. She is an entitled brat, cold and not friendly. Considering that the most beloved heroines in kdrama world are usually the cute, innocent and bubbly type, it's no surprise that people don't like her. There's not much to like. Why did that hatred transferred to Sung Yuri herself, I don't know. One possible explanation is that
2. Hyun Bin was in LOVE with her. Apparently, you have to be someone as loved and popular as KSA or SHK to be able to get away with on/off screen romance with him.
The drama itself wasn't that bad.
I guess that puts me in "Save Bora" team. :)

Hi! enjoy Ninja Assasin :)
Trying to figure out what your drama shorthand is has become a kind of game with me. I have a guess but I am not sure it is the right one. Does WISFC stand for Will it Snow on Chrismas? :)

See
BORA is not = SYR. (tsktsktsk and fingerswagging at the coying schemes of Miss OTP's fanboy) and BORA dying acting gave Miss SYR's eye muscles and lips a deserving break fr OTPing to death.
And I'm on a mightier team to want TW/DG (not HB!) dead as well. (ahhhh, just to see binnie moping, wailing yet dying...I can hear the carolers singing and sleighbells ringing already!)
just objectively saying.
o thank you errrr! (yay after the hols!!)

@139 Viola -
Only recently I have stopped lurking on this site and posted some short, timid sentences and then quickly scurried back under cover. But your stirring words have brought me forth from the shadows to proudly proclaim my alleigance to the “Save Bora” faction. I am currently watching Hong Gil Dong and I adore Sung Yuri. As belleza knows, I am just fooling. We are all one big happy family, all on the same side (cheering on JB), all of us, happy campers singing songs on the k-drama bus that is driven by javabeans.
Oh, and yeah, the Foundation series is a classic. I would call it required reading for nerds. Brilliant stuff.
(Edit: I am beginning to notice that I am waaaaaaaay weirder today than normal. My excuse - it is the end of the week, I am running on fumes averaging about 3 hours of sleep per night, with the baby and all, having churned out with cleown 2 recaps with a third ready for release, and have literally poured caffeine down my throat to finish my work and get out of here and go help the missus with the baby again. )
