Kim Myung-min sets up his own company
by javabeans
Following stars like Bae Yong-joon and Choi Ji-woo, top actor Kim Myung-min (My Love By My Side, Beethoven Virus) is setting up his own management company. Now that his contract has come to an end, he has decided against taking an offer from any of the numerous firms courting him and instead chosen to go solo.
A source explained on the 30th, “Kim Myung-min decided to set up his own company in early December. After forming the board of directors, he will look for an office and begin working on concrete preparations.”
With three Daesang awards under his belt and having created several memorable characters (the military hero Lee Soon-shin, the coldly ambitious Dr. Jang in White Tower, the delightfully abrasive Maestro Kang in Beethoven Virus), Kim Myung-min is at the height of his career and it looks like things are still going up. Even though his acting life is busy, the source expressed that he intends to participate directly in the business side of his company.

impressive. I don't doubt he'll do good, perhaps even better now that he's at more liberty to lead his career in the direction he wants to.

He still looks a little on the skinny side. :(
I'm sure he'll do well, and a lot of younger actors would benefit greatly from working under him. ^^

I'm no business major and I know the advantages of starting one's company to represent oneself are intuitively enormous but can someone concretely explain the new trend? Any reasons for this?

@ 5 ^_^ (otherwise known as LYING LIAR WHO LIES) - inside joke, peeps, I adore the man formerly known as samsooki:
Your asking strikes me as more than just curiousity, could you perchance be testing the waters? Since KMM's name is not Kang Ji-hwan, I suggest you mosey along and not even allow the thought of *mine* to cross your mind. Why tempt yourself?
And, FYI, I don't believe he has been claimed here in DB, and he is indeed divine.

@giddygirl: The advantage of having your own firm is of 3-fold: (1) you are the boss and you rip all the profit and shoulder all the losses (2) you generate income, and you have expenses, and you pay tax. You pay tax on income minus expenses.
So, as a filmstar, you expense your car, your clothes, your staff salary, your own salary (set your own), your accessories, your office (home office as well), and you effectively created a loss, and you never pay tax. (3) you can pick and choose the project, and of course subject to whether you have enough fame to attract sufficient business.
Also, remember everything is impermance in this world. Time only goes one way, and only change is permanent i.e. one will get old and fans are vey frickle animals.
On the downside, when you have negative publicity, no one is going to protect you or advise you of what image you should be put forward to the public. Then, you are digging your own grave if you do not know how to think on your own feet. Slowly one may loose the self esteem, and get into anxiety spiral and finally depression. That's where you see another shooting star is coming down!!
I hope I did not make you giddy....zzzz?>>>>>????

*doh* face-palm. Swooping in like that, Thundie, so unfair. And claiming *mine* in a recap, double-unfair. Oh well, his talent is for us all to enjoy even if he's been claimed by you. I know you'll take good care of him. :-)

This move makes a lot of sense -- KMM pushed really hard to get White Tower made, so he's been involved on the production side of the business. I think his real passion is TV, rather than film, and he wants the autonomy to facilitate creatively significant drama projects. In those intentions, he's mutually exclusive from the Hallyu actors, who start up production companies to expand their marketability and monetary take on the international market.

Wish him success in his own company! He's really a good actor, but it's a pity that I have not yet had the chance to watch his movie "My love, my side".

"Others will follow, setting up their own business (management)."
I tend to disagree with that. The main force behind actors/idols forming their own agencies has been Hallyu. Very few actors have sufficient draw power in other countries to warrant forming their own agency. And the downside is considerable. If your agency screws up or if you end up in tabloid controversy, there's much less protection. Finally, if the industry pushes back against actors asking for extremely high paydays as well as demanding creative control of the show (see Song Seung Heon), then production companies will be much less amenable to these single entity production companies.

Kim Myung-min really is one of the best actors I've seen in my lifetime, if not the best, and one of the most dedicated ones (especially as a method actor). I always enjoy watching him in all his roles. I wish him all the success in setting up his own company. Good luck!

And imagine the conversation between KMM and Hjkomo
KMM: *clearing throat* This wine is truly a mediocre vintage. Merlot? Hmph!!! This poison is more tannic than my labrador's urine!! Hmph.
Hjkomo: *panting* Moar!! Moar!!
KMM: Young Jang Geon Suk, I can discern your growth as an actor in You're Beautiful. Now I believe you have enough experience to play . . . my shoe. Hahahahaha.
Hjkomo: Ohgodohgodohgodohgod
KMM: This Mishil? Princess Jumong? Why I was the IMMORTAL YI SHOO SHIN!!!
Hjkomo: *screams in that unique way that rabbits do after being shot or enjoying Matrix-level sex .. .. really who knows with rabbits*
KMM: Come Hjkomo, let us watch East of Eden and partake in more laughter while we make Dionysian love on top of my award chest. Doctor or conductor uniform?
Hjkomo: PAMA!!!
*cue Almost Paradise*

JV is he the actor from Bad Family? well, i can say this guy did well in his career, he is getting old, does he have a family? nice move for him to take,. acting is not forever, by putting up his own management he can able to share his knowledge and acting skills to the beginner actors and actresses and so, they can become better in their chosen field, and yeah he need to be more responsible and wise with his acts now.

There is always a Pro & Con for every move one takes ....
Bravo to KMM who has taken a stance for his career. This dream is real & touchable, there are not stars far... far... away ...beyond pluck (KangMae statement at the traffic)
Well, it may or may not succeed, but as what Oboe said to Kang Mae .... " no hesitation " & Kang Mae to the orchestra " this is the time " .... GO!
and ..... They make it ..... I would like and tend to look at the bright side .....
Lots of challenges, lots to be done, lots to bear ....etc....
KMM is a fighter, when the going gets tough, the tough gets going ....
Best wishes and supports from Malaysia ... ^_^
