Two previews for MBC’s Hero
by javabeans
MBC released another trailer for the upcoming Hero this week, so there are now two separate preview videos for the comedy-action series. The good news is, despite the numerous problems plaguing the production, I think the footage looks pretty smooth, and the newest cast member, Yoon So-yi, seems to be fine in her role even though she had about a year less preparation time than its star, Lee Junki. If I’d seen the trailers not knowing of the backstory with its leading actress(es), I wouldn’t think it was of any lesser quality than normal.
The bad news is… I think the drama itself looks kinda awful, actually. But you be the judge.
As I said, I think the quality of the previews is fine. The content, on the other hand… Well, I’m just not sure about the tone. It’s got the gag-comedy slapstick feel of those old-school gag shows (that trot-esque music doesn’t help), and everyone is certainly hamming it up for the camera.
Well, we’ll see how the first episode actually comes together when it airs on Wednesday, November 18. I’m really hoping the trailer is NOT an indication of the drama itself.

Who is that older actor? He's shown quite a bit on the preview.
I wish them well, but, can't help to think it's going to be another competition for you-know-what-other-drama, and no I'm not talking about Iris:)
I wonder if it will be along the same lines as Sweet Spy. Even though the acting wasn't the greatest, I really liked the humor.

i dunno what you r thinking. i thought it wasn't that bad. but we'll see when the episodes come out. Hero, fighting! and I'm not saying this because i'm Lee Jun Ki's fan, coz i am soo not his fan. I just simply thought, if they could pull this off and not going astray like heading to the ground, then it would be quite an entertaining drama coz it certainly looks like it!

What the hell was that?...
I was all prepared to watch this, but now I'm not so sure. I have to agree with JB. The acting seems good, but the content...not so much. I really can't handle another drama that is full of comedy. I hate comedy, especially after being forced to sit through the awfulness that Hollywood calls comedy (Superbad, Bruno? anyone?)
Yea, I'll be lucky if I last through three minutes of this dramas first episode.
(I'm sorry if anyone actually likes Hollywood's comedies...I just don't.)

LOL! I think that was my expression to a T.
The drama has zero appeal to me at the moment, but I've said that before and had to eat my words. I trust you, JB! If you say watch, then I watch. Otherwise...no. Simple as that. :-)

Er...that looks...IDK, not my thing and let's leave it at that. Maybe the slapstick comedy is going to get toned down a bit? Let's hope so. As of now I have zero interest in this.

though i'm junki fan but i don't like the preview and i don't like the soundtrack. Anyway, i heard another ost (ballad song) which is really good. it might be promoted so soon.
junki himself said in the past that he wan't suit comedy role. So he choosed serious character many time before but this time he really wants to try new thing so i must wait to look for the result. either it's turn out good or bad, it will be his experiences. I can't say it will be successful or not, but it's his choice for this moment.

am i the only one who thinks that this drama might be good? i thought it had a very old school charm. reminds me of old sitcoms like cheers and the like. or is that what's turning ppl off????

Cheers, Roseanne, ummmm? ~~and other old school sitcoms weren't slapsticky, though. They relied more on sarcasm and timing to get laughs. At least, my parents laughed.
Situational sitcoms now seems more hamtastic to me. Actors are shy of doing the Simon Pegg "whuhh" face into the camera as the "bada-bing!" sounds. They overact big time. Amirite? I don't watch them, so don't really know! Wuhhh? Bada bing!
This looks very hammy. I actually don't get what the gist is, since it seems they literally just threw together and bunch of energetic/action shots and called it good.
Meh.

Honestly, I thought these previews made the content look good and appealing, in contrast to the awful preview that was released (it was about 5 minutes in length) a couple of weeks ago (when the other actress was still in the show). Now that preview was soporific!
These ones actually look promising! I am hoping for a Mixed Up Investigative Agency type of Scooby Doo-ish show.
Well, let's see how it works out.
Lee Jun Ki really doesn't like doing straight romantic, traditional stuff, does he? His choices are so anti-romantic -- excluding My Girl, and even then, My Girl is a quirky league of her own. He seems dead set on avoiding standard rom-coms!
The lead actress now looks great! I like her statuesque beauty and she is someone who will look good next to Junki.
Will I tune in next week? Umm, no. I have my hands full with watching YAB live, then rewatching the raws, then watching subbed on viikii, then reading recaps here, and then watching all things remotely YAB and Jang Geun Sun related on the interwebs, and then rewatching EVERYTHING all over again during the weekend. Such level of addiction leaves very little time for much else...lulz.

Huh? What the !! ??? This was really bad! Lee Junki prepared a year for this?? Hopefully the drama itself is better - for their sake. I won't watch it - have enough on my plate as it is right now.

I think the preview is a turn off because I am totally confused by it as well but then again it's of course since I still haven't seen it. But I am curious as to how it plays out because I know Lee Jun Ki is a great actor so I want to support it. It's great that they are still going forward despite what happened to their lead actress. I wish them luck :)

I have concluded that I must have off the norm tastes. I thought that trailer was ok. Whether or not the dramas is ok, I don't know yet, but it didn't turn me off. And I thought that Junki is taking on a different type of role, which is nice. But maybe everyone else understand the korean and I don't so, that probably makes me more naive.

Good God, this was horrific! Lee Jun Ki, why?
I am someone who finds even YAB's cartoonish "cutesiness" grating at times (if Minam were any dimmer, she'd be unable to dress herself) so something like this, which makes YAB looks understated, is not for me.

Well, I think the main problem is that I'm still not entirely sure what the show's about. All of the summaries have been really vague and this preview is even vaguer. What I'm HOPING for is a show that's full of interplay and banter between the employees and a decent back-story for each character all of which will be tied to Lee Jun-ki and Yoon So-yi's characters; ergo, they're the main vehicles of the plot but they're supplemented and supported by a network of people. Sort of like The World That They Live In except a bit more comical and less heavy-handed with the metaphors and life lessons. intellectual without being preachy. However, these previews are less an indication of that and more telling of a low nutrition meal with an extra serving of ham. Of course previews are often grossly inaccurate representations of their shows, but if one is bad, then I'm immediately more cautious.
I want to have faith in Jun-ki's choices as I loved everything he was in so far, so I guess I'm holding off judgment until the first two episodes air.

it looks like most of the dramas are turned to comedy..
i like comedy but sometime i miss the real drama..
wasn't my fair lady about 3 sisters and hyena is the middle child.. the lead male will come to revenge as a butler.. but nope they change it to comedy!!
same for hero.. i remember they said it will be the modern iljimae.. and yet again they change it to comedy.
even you're beautiful i thought they will show MORE how the real idol live and how they suffer specially after the issues we had this year..
oh well am loving YAB anyway.. and i will give hero try just for lee jun ki :)

this drama seems to be the same as You're Beautiful: it strives to talk a certain serious topic (journalism, idol life) but instead of being serious, it becomes a comedy, which turns me off. I'm gonna give this a chance, but if it is indeed similar to YAB in tone, then I will skip both of them altogether. And IRIS is being overly serious .--> boring, so I will skip it also. Yawn~~ Nothing good comes out of Kdrama industry these days.

Frankly Dramabeans I don't agree with you here when you say the drama looks awful. You overract a bit when you say that. I feel this will be a little light hearted and as you said the actress looks fine with her role (plus don't forget the problems the makers went through). Besides I feel you have had something against this drama since you saw the first pics...
and I can feel too people have too much fanatism about YAB.

One does not need to speak Korean (which I, unfortunately, don't) to sense this is -and will prove to be- well and truly awful. I don't know why the discerning JB thought the acting in the trailer was good (maybe an act of charity towards something so patently bad). It looks tedious, infantile (rather than charming and hilarious), and a big mistake both in conception and execution. Even the most committed Lee Jun Ki fan will require great stamina to torture to sit through this, me thinks.

I've only seen Lee Jun Ki in one drama, My Girl, and I liked him quite a bit. I believe that Hero is airing in the same time slot as Iris and You're Beautiful, right? Although I'm a very satisfied and committed fan of You're Beautiful, I do hope that Hero does okay in its ratings. I know that mega-dollar blockbuster Iris is sucking the wind out of all of its competitors' sails, consistently bringing in 30+% ratings. Admittedly, it does seem to be a pretty entertaining series to watch, though I think it takes itself perhaps a bit too seriously.
In all honesty, the Hero previews just didn't do anything for me, but that's just me and my taste. I hope that Hero finds a good home with the viewers drawn to checking it out.
Good luck, Lee Jun Ki and Hero!
