Tentative starts for new weekend dramas
by javabeans
Eugene of Creating Destiny
Two new dramas premiered this weekend, to mixed reactions: MBC’s Creating Destiny starring Eugene, above, and KBS’s Hot-Blooded Salesman, starring Chae Jung-ahn and Park Hae-jin.
Perhaps Tamra fans will feel vindicated (or further insulted?) to know that the drama that replaced it (after Tamra was unceremoniously slashed) pulled in even lower numbers; Creating Destiny only managed a very low 3.5% for its first outing.
However, hope isn’t lost for the series, which was up against the last week of KBS’s hit family show Sons of Sol Pharmacy, whose penultimate episode scored a 38.9%. We’ll have to see whether Creating Destiny will bounce back next week when KBS launches its new drama, Three Brothers [수상한 삼형제, or more literally, “Three Suspicious Brothers”]. That drama features Ahn Nae-sang and Oh Dae-kyu — both of the very popular First Wives Club — and is another family-oriented 50-episode drama, so Destiny may still face an uphill climb.
Rounding out that timeslot was SBS’s Loving You A Thousand Times, which performed strongly with an 18.7%.
Chae Jung-ahn, Park Hae-jin of Hot-Blooded Salesman
Meanwhile, an hour later, KBS’s new Hot-Blooded Salesman did better with a 9.5% — not high enough to rest easy, but definitely on more solid ground. It followed the long-running sageuk series Iron Empress (which ended last weekend with a 22.6%). This later hour is also a more level playing ground, as the three broadcast dramas are all scoring within the same general range; MBC’s Assorted Gems brought in a 13.6% and SBS’s Smile was just behind at a 13.5%.
Hot-Blooded Salesman is set in the world of car dealers, and its three main stars — Chae Jung-ahn (Cain & Abel), Park Hae-jin (East of Eden), Choi Chul-ho (Queen of Housewives) — are all coming off previous projects that performed strongly. The drama mixes business competition with romance and is described as an upbeat trendy drama. The description didn’t quite catch my interest, but the drama does come from the brain of well-known manhwa-ka Park In-kwon, who also created the manhwas War of Money and Daemul.
Despite the uneasy beginnings, as we know, ratings are certainly important but they are not an indicator of quality. Both shows earned some positive responses for being fresh in their approach; only time will tell how they fare in the longer run. Next week should be a better indicator of that, and in any case, it’s nice to have a fresh influx of new dramas after having the same ones on for the past several months.

For the record, the recaps for Sol Pharmacy suu-hhhcked. The #1 rated show in korea barely gets any ink for the past three months.

@ Daepoong: That's a bit harsh. It's insane to expect someone to recap a drama that's 50+ episodes.
@ Javabeans: Have you seen Creating Destiny yet? I'm waiting on the subs. I'm hoping it will be a Korean version of Monsoon Wedding.

I saw the 1st episode of Creating Destiny and I'm getting hooked on it already. The drama has a few veteran actors. I think everyone else does a good job paying their roles except for the the bf...he's not a good actor. Couldn't they find someone better? Anyways, I'm still going to watch it despite the low ratings! Hopefull, it'll go up. :)

I'm definitely enjoying Loving You 1000x. With all the fluffy fun stuff I'm watching (You're Beautiful right after MFL), LYATT is like a breath of fresh melodramatic air!!

@ Daepoong: For the record, your comment SUCCKKKSSSS.
I don't comment often, but this just made me mad. This isn't DB's job and she doesn't owe you (or anyone else that reads her blog) anything.
The readers owe HER a big thanks for all the k news, recaps etc.
THANK YOU!

JB, don't mind the first commenter. We all get a little craaaazy sometimes. That person obviously can go elsewhere w/ that kind of negativity. The rest of us are grateful and appreciative of your insightful and entertaining recaps. The rest of us who are normal, reasonable people.

At first, I didn't want to comment out of fear of fulfilling your intentions: a reaction from DB readers.
But then again, I don't mind getting my hands dirty.
I'm sure you are full of s*** cuz' your comment stinks. Big time!
You have the freedom of speech. And you exercised that right rather poorly.
You also have the freedom of choice. Pray do exercise that one and don't bother with this blog. I'm sure there are plenty of blogs out there that can provide you with intelligent and witty recaps of your favourite drama.
Ooooh, here is an idea: why don't you provide us all with the links to such blogs where we may go and read insightful comments about dramas day after day, week after week, months after .... You get the point!

wow people simma down now. i have nothing against DB or JB, really. they made a big thing about having recaps for SoS and it fell into a blackhole after ep 25. the comment was about the recaps, not any personal attack on JB. geez.
@Jenna: yeah, it kind of is a 'job' in some sense. she provides a service, gratis, high quality and current, and her loyal readers click on her page and she gets a little ad revenue. there's give and take. i'm not going to dramabeans to get sports scores, i'm getting entertainment knews.

That's just not cool.... Don't be like that. Plenty of people in the Open Thread talk about Sons of Sol Pharmacy enough to have an active discussion over it. Not every drama needs a recap post. JB is doing her best! (and it is the best)
About Creating Destiny: I'm not quite into it yet... it may end up being a show I watch when it's over instead of week to week. I didn't feel like Eugenes character was really that into her Australian boyfriend. Like....has he ever kissed her? But he was soooooo in love with her (He kept saying it, drove me nuts). Well, maybe it'll get better. But for now I'm too busy and into You're Beautiful (Like everyone else! haha) and Smile.

If Daepoong's comment were directed at me, I would shrug it off and not care. But I haven't been doing the Sol Pharmacy recaps so I feel the need to step in here and defend the recapper, who has expressed to me how sorry she is that her LIFE got in the way of being current with drama recaps. I assured her to not worry about recapping quickly, and offered to take a few recaps off her hands so we can resume posting on this wonderful drama. When a lovely, articulate volunteer recapper feels guilty for not keeping up, I want to make absolutely clear that recaps, while nice, are nobody's obligation. I'm thankful for the time and generosity that others have shown in making me banners and writing guest posts.
Again to Daepoong, I was not being sarcastic -- if you think you can do recaps quicker and better, I am fully open to having you take them on until the other recapper resumes.
Perhaps a little perspective is in order from those who feel entitled to having dramas recapped quickly and thoroughly. It would certainly be appreciated.

This is sort of off topic but I have been looking forward to more City Hall recaps. The person who was doing it (sorry, I couldn't remember who it was) did such a wonderful job on it, I really wanted to see what she had to say about the rest of the show.
For those who does the recaps, thank you. It is always great to read another person's perspective (also for some reason quite exciting when I see they feel the same way as I do) and I for one am in awe of the amount of work it must goes into doing it.

Creating destriny looks really interesting, I'm dissapointed that it got such a low rating.
On a side note, I really hope Assorted Gems' rating increases a lot since it's a very charming drama, I don't know why korea doesn't enjoy it as much as non-koreans do, so fresh !
both MBC weekend dramas are 50 episodes! I hope MBC does not pull anything stupid by making it shorter or longer :(

Seriously guys, if you're so quick to defend someone, the least you could do is the defend the right person. DB is not even recapping that drama anymore, lol.
Giving a summary of the episode is hard enough, trying recapping scene by scene. It's hard work.
Most weekend dramas this time are 50 episodes, more if they get extended due to good ratings. I'm glad none of my anticipated dramas are on the weekends. It'll be a long wait.

oh wow, I think Smile did relatively good with its 10+%, and yes, quite ironic that they cut off Tamra for Creating Destiny that just totally lack the vibe during its promotion. Thinking about it, I'm still a bit sad Tamra ended -_-

I've been really interested in Loving you a 1000x and Smile but lack of time has made selective lately, unless they're really good I doubt I wanna waste the time, Smile is on my list tho, it looks like a cute little drama, which I hope to god is 30 and not 50 eps.

Normally I'll let the Samsooki, the esteemed and hardworking author of the City Hall recaps, respond, but it seems like both of you (and many others) are just eagerly awaiting the recaps without understanding why it's stopped for the past few months.
Samsooki is busy with his real work and personal life, as he and Mrs. Samsooki are expecting a baby at ANYTIME now (I say this because he told us in OT a few weeks ago). He promises to finish the CH recaps, so sit tight. Plus, he has other subbing responsibilities, so his doing CH recaps is and will continue to be a treat to us Hallers young and old alike. ;-)

" they made a big thing about having recaps for SoS and it fell into a blackhole after ep 25. "
"her loyal readers click on her page and she gets a little ad revenue".
@Daepoong
I can understand how frustrating it must be to come to this blog every week and not find your favourite drama. I don't think the recapper understands the effort that goes into typing http://www.dramabeans.com into the search bar. Or the disappointment that follows not finding the promised recaps.
The recapper only has to type up a few hundred words, paste a few critical screen caps and perhaps insert a comment or two about the episode. But you have to sit there day after day hoping, praying, wishing, wanting the recaps that these bloggers dared promised.
And to top it all off, they get ad revenue from us which is so unfair. I mean they should be paying us for visiting this blog on multiple occasions.
Here is yet another idea Daepoong: why don't you start a blog of your own. And recap as many dramas as you want. You can put as many ads as you like for revenue.
Your future loyal reader.

I just hope the drama's recapper, smallfish, doesn't read this post.
Oh, but I think she won't, because like JB said, she is busy with her LIFE right now, the only hindrance that has stopped her from doing the recaps, which has made daepoong annoyed. I guess I'm sorry at daepoong that smallfish won't be able to read your comments and finish up the recapping any time soon just for you.
On a side note, I'm still disappointed with MBC that they ended Tamra in a hurry. Eh. Who am I kidding. I still love MBC anyway.

@24 thankyou regarding your comment towards Daepoong- Love it! wanna say, you go sister! (or brother!)
and 54 episodes is a heck lot to recap! I think the dramas recapped on this site don't go beyond 25 episodes.
I can't wait to see how the ratings will go next week! I probably won't watch Hotblooded salesman, but I'm really curious about it! will probably check out the first episode later this week to see what the katana in the promotional pics was all abt.

I figured life was probably the reason that the recapped stopped, but it is great to know congrats are in order to Samsooki and his wife. There is certainly no hurry on the recaps since I've already watched CH twice. :-) It was for purely selfish desire to revisit the drama again through Samsooki's recaps. Thanks though, it is nice to know the reason why it stopped and for what a happy reason too.

As disappointed as I was that Tamra was cut, it has already happened, so I'm all ready to enjoy some new shows (since I wasn't particularly interested in the dramas last season). It looks like I'm going to like Smile, You're Beautiful and I'm all set to enjoy Creating Destiny, so hopefully the ratings will go up! MBC really has awful history with slashing dramas that don't perform well.
The only thing that interests me about Hot-blooded Salesman is Park Hae Jin, though. I mean... cars? Seriously?
@ 24 thankyou

As a Tamra fan, I do feel vindicated that Creating Destiny pulled in 3.5% rating, but mad again at the decision to cut Tama short at the same time, cuz we Tama fans had expected this already. MBC should definitely rearrange the drama time slot if they want to attract more viewers to their weekend drama.

for your info, Creating Destiny is doing reallly goood, and the online followers (viikii) are more than 300,000. Maybe rating should consider that too.
I think most people are into CD for Eugene..and so far she hasn't disappoint. Her performance is as good as ever, as well she's getting prettier.
Watch it!

am hoping you would do recaps about "Creating Destiny". i was just able to watch 'til episode 10 w/ english subs fr mysoju.com and even if it wasn't of gud quality, eugene & her partner had gud chemistry. i was wondering how everything really went on. it wasn't as gud as "You're Beautiful" but was fun to watch as well as other romantic dramas.thnx
