My Fair Lady: Episode 14
by javabeans
Like the past three (or so) episodes, I think Episode 14 is rife with weird, illogical moments. But unlike the past three episodes, at least this one has a couple of nice, conflict-ridden scenes to make up for it. No, it doesn’t make up for all of the shortcomings, but there were a couple bits of dialogue that were really nice (okay, maybe just one great line) and a burst of emotion. Finally!

EPISODE 14 RECAP
Hae-na bursts out of the meeting, grabs Dong-chan, and starts running. He’s completely clueless as to why they’re running, or why they are being chased by men in suits, but then again so am I. This inexplicable chase scene also reminds me of Witch Amusement’s Episode 15, when Jae Hee and Han Ga-in run out of a wedding together and are chased for unclear reasons.
Dong-chan asks what’s going on, and Hae-na tells him, “Grandfather knows everything.” His initial shock gives way to the logical conclusion that running will solve nothing. He grabs her this time, leading her back to face her grandfather, but she protests. This isn’t something that can be fixed by asking for forgiveness — the paparazzi have gotten wind of the story, and rumors will start spreading.
She asks, “Can you stand to not see me again? Can you live the rest of your life without me? If you go to Grandfather now, you and I are over — we may never see each other again. I can’t break up with you like this. Are you okay not seeing me again?”
He thinks on it.
Grandpa orders his men to block the news from spreading further, no matter what. He wants to see Hae-na and Dong-chan ASAP.
Upon reading the news, Eui-joo tries calling Dong-chan, but can’t get through. She finds Tae-yoon blissfully unaware of the uproar and shows him the newspaper article. He sets out for Hae-na’s house, and together they ask the staff what has happened to Hae-na and Dong-chan.
The staff don’t know where they’ve gone, and are busily preparing for a busy day, what with the reporters about to descend upon the household. To Eui-joo’s dismay, Tae-yoon speculates that it’s likely that the couple ran away together.
This is indeed the case, and the two have taken a bus to a small seaside town. (This is also like in Witch Amusement — really, if they were going to crib from a drama, couldn’t they have picked a good one?)
Hae-na’s mood lifts once they arrive, but Dong-chan remains heavy-hearted as he wonders, “I don’t know if this is the right thing to do.” Hae-na advises, “Don’t be so troubled. Let’s think that we came on vacation.” She wants to keep a happy mood while they’re here, and makes him promise to avoid unhappy thoughts.
With that, they rent a room and settle in, enjoying their time frolicking on the beach.
Hae-na asks when Dong-chan started to like her, making guesses — was it the day he taught her how to ride a bike? When she gave him the birthday coupon? No, Dong-chan says, it was the day he first saw her cry back at the stables. He’d felt sorry for her and wanted to treat her well.
Thinking on it, he says that he’s seen her crying a lot, “So I don’t want to see you crying anymore.” He promises to make sure she doesn’t cry in the future — which, of course, touches her so much she cries.
Hae-na asks Dong-chan to sing for her, and he complies.
The next thing we know, Eui-joo is also singing — loudly and bitterly, substituting her own lyrics about how Hae-na is a bad person. (LOL. It’s cute.) At first bemused, Tae-yoon watches in amusement as she belts out her modified lyrics.
I’ve noticed for a while now that the writer of this drama tends to plot the episodes very simply, with one particular motif often cropping up multiple times in a single episode. For instance, yesterday everyone kept falling asleep and waking up. Today, people sing for no apparent reason. It’s like the writer doesn’t have enough ideas for ways to fill up the time, so everyone does the same thing.
As they leave the karaoke bar, Tae-yoon comments that Eui-joo’s quite unusual: “You can sing in these circumstances?” Eui-joo finds that better than the alternative — crying — and grumbles how she hates Dong-chan and Hae-na. Tae-yoon, on the other hand, doesn’t agree. Instead of feeling hate, “My heart hurts. I had liked seeing her smiling, and that she made me smile…”
Eui-joo complains that Tae-yoon is merely pretending to act cool, and feels put out that both men like Hae-na so much: “It makes me jealous.”
However, by the time Tae-yoon drops her off at home, Eui-joo has calmed a bit and admits that she doesn’t really think Tae-yoon is just pretending to act cool or impressive by reacting so maturely. (Some of us would call that maturity.) She concedes, “You are pretty cool,” and advises him not to torture himself.
Tae-yoon smiles at her misconception of him — he’s not the type for self-torture. And he hasn’t given up on Hae-na yet. He agrees to her earlier proposal to unite in their efforts, because whether he’s acting out of love or pride, he wants to try seeing this through to the end, “So if I feel regrets, I can feel them after I have my answer.”
That night, Hae-na tries to hint to get Dong-chan to stay with her for the night, put out when he courteously gives up the room for her to use alone. Annoyed, she grabs the blankets from him, resulting in a tug-of-war. Which, naturally, ends with him on top of her.
They freeze, faces within inches of each other, Hae-na closing her eyes in anticipation for a kiss… but he doesn’t kiss her. Instead, he gets up and heads outside for some air.
He still feels guilty, unsure whether running away was a good thing, and calls Mr. Jang to tell him not to worry about Hae-na. Mr. Jang asks, “Are you sure this is for her benefit?” Hae-na would be losing too much if she had to give up everything to follow Dong-chan.
Those words echo his own inner monologue, and Dong-chan seems to make a decision with himself. Thus when Hae-na joins him outside, she can sense his mood and reminds him that he’d promised to think happy thoughts. (He teases that he was — he was thinking of all the ways he’d nag her tomorrow.)
Hae-na: “Do you have regrets? Is that why?”
Dong-chan: “What about you? Do you have regrets?”
Hae-na: “You still don’t know me that well. I never regret things — because I’m Kang Hae-na. But there is one thing I regret — that I’m not just Kang Hae-na, but the Kang Hae-na of Kang San Group. If I had grown up in a normal family as a normal child, it would have been less difficult on you. But what can I do? I’m Kang Hae-na and I don’t change, so even if it’s hard for you, you have to accept it. Because I can’t help being Kang Hae-na.”
(Who writes this dialogue??)
Without knowing it, Hae-na’s words have made up Dong-chan’s mind for him, because they remind him that she’ll never NOT be the Kang San Group heir, that she isn’t “just” the regular Kang Hae-na but someone with a greater future in store for her. That’s why he decides it’s time to return home and face reality.
Hae-na greets Dong-chan in the morning with his favorite food — kimchi chigae — although her cooking skills aren’t quite up to par. Dong-chan is impressed that she made the effort, and asks if she can live doing her own cooking, cleaning, and laundry. Hae-na answers cheerily in the negative, saying that she’s only doing this today because it’s a special occasion.
Dong-chan tells her it’s time to go back to Seoul and meet her grandfather; they can’t run forever. Hae-na wants to linger here, but he tells her that without her grandfather’s approval, they won’t be able to be happy.
Hae-na wonders if Dong-chan can win Grandpa’s approval, and he says he’ll have to try.
However, it doesn’t actually appear that he intends to try at all, based on the sad, meaningful way he looks at and speaks to Hae-na. She picks up on it as well, such as when he returns her sparkly hairpin and his words are tinged with a sense of finality. She’s uneasy at his way of speaking, so he laughs it off (unconvincingly), saying that he hadn’t meant anything by it.
Dong-chan calls Grandpa to arrange a meeting, assuring Hae-na that he is eager to receive her. However, we can tell that he’s covering something up in the way he looks conflicted and answers her questions vaguely while ushering her to the meeting place at a fancy hotel.
The truth is, they’re not meeting Grandpa Kang to announce their relationship and to gain his approval (which is what Hae-na believes). In truth, Dong-chan has agreed to deliver Hae-na to the hotel meeting room, while Grandpa Kang comes to his own understanding with Tae-yoon.
When Tae-yoon visits Grandpa Kang, the latter apologizes for Hae-na’s behavior. He’s vastly relieved at Tae-yoon’s calm response that he knows Dong-chan isn’t a bad guy and that Hae-na is merely going through a temporary bout with her emotions. Grandpa asks Tae-yoon to stick with Hae-na, calling her childish for her current rebellion, sure that she can be persuaded to come around.
Dong-chan and Hae-na arrive first, at which point Dong-chan excuses himself and instructs Hae-na to wait for her grandfather to arrive. Believing that he’s just stepping out for a short moment, Hae-na agrees. Dong-chan knows better and walks away with a heavy heart, not wanting to leave but knowing he must, and leaves the hotel as Grandpa Kang arrives.
Hae-na greets her grandfather and starts to apologize, but stops when someone else joins them — Tae-yoon.
Unbeknownst to her, Tae-yoon and Grandpa have arranged a meeting with Tae-yoon’s parents: This is the customary formal greeting between the parents of a bridal couple. Tae-yoon’s parents are under the impression that the kids are still on for wedding, and ask when the date should be set. Tae-yoon promises to go with whatever is decided, so the adults ask Hae-na when she would like to set the date.
All the while, Hae-na sits in growing anxiety, feeling trapped and sorry for causing yet more trouble. When she is pressed about the wedding date, Hae-na starts to speak, then falters. Finally, she says sorrowfully, “I cannot agree to this marriage. I’m sorry.”
Unsurprisingly, Tae-yoon’s parents are deeply offended and storm out. Grandpa demands to know why she can’t marry Tae-yoon. She starts to answer, “I love someone else—” and he cuts her off, saying, “If you’re going to talk about Dong-chan, don’t say a word.”
But she has to tell him, and admits that it is because of Dong-chan. This horrifies her grandfather, who knows the full truth of Dong-chan’s background. He asks indignantly, “How can you do this?” He sees that she is serious, and denounces her decision: “If you’re going to like him, don’t even think of appearing before me!”
Outside, Tae-yoon asks in a voice tinged with bitterness, “Are you happy with things like this? You really are courageous.” I don’t know what he has to be so pissy about, since nobody told Hae-na what the meeting was about and he knows how she feels about Dong-chan.
Hae-na asks if it was Tae-yoon who arranged the meeting, or Dong-chan. He asks, “Is that so important?” But it is important to her, so he answers that both he and Dong-chan were struck with the same idea.
That distinction is important, because it defines the motives behind Dong-chan’s actions. Thus she’s angry and hurt when she arrives at the flower shop to confront him, and slaps him.
Hae-na: “I came to say thank you. I was really happy that you suggested making our formal greeting to Grandfather. But you were going to give me away to Tae-yoon. … I came back from the seaside thinking we would be making a new start, but you were thinking of breaking up. Tell me, did you even love me? Is this what your love is?”
Hae-na leaves, and this time, given his actions, Dong-chan can’t follow.
Back at home, Mr. Jang and the housekeeper Ms. Jo disagree about the situation, their views mirroring Hae-na and Dong-chan’s. Both servants like and respect Dong-chan, but Mr. Jang thinks that the couple should separate, for Hae-na’s own good. He thinks the housekeeper is naive for thinking that Hae-na’s happiness would be secured by being with the one she loves. He says, “We cannot be happy with only love.” She retorts, “Yes, you’re right. But it’s even harder to be happy without love.”
The housekeeper calls Dong-chan to tell him that Hae-na is refusing to go home and is staying at the hotel. Dong-chan shows up at her door, insisting that she go home.
He forces his way inside to pack her things. Resisting, Hae-na yells at him to leave and calls the front desk to have the intruder removed. At that, Dong-chan loses his temper and demands, “Do you really not understand why I let you go?”
Hae-na: “Why do you think I asked you to run away with me? Because I was bored? To get some air? To see the ocean? No. I thought that if only you were with me, I could abandon everything. I even thought I could leave Grandfather. I cared for you that much, and thought you felt the same. No matter what happened, I trusted that you wouldn’t leave me. But you sent me to Tae-yoon so easily. That makes me so furious I can’t take it! You’re too selfish, and cowardly.”
And now Dong-chan speaks the one bit of dialogue that I thought made this episode worth the madness:
Dong-chan: “Yeah, I’m a coward. Rich people like you can love grandly — that must be great. You have a lot to lose, and a lot to give up. But for poor guys like me, the only thing I have that I can give up for your sake is myself. That’s why I sent you to Tae-yoon. If that’s such a cowardly and stupid thing to do, then yes, you’re right. If I knew this is how things would end, it would have been better to remain as your ordinary jibsa, unaffected by worry. You and I were never right for each other from the start.”
Hae-na cries, “That’s not what I’m talking about!” This isn’t the conversation she meant to have, and as Dong-chan leaves after telling her to return home, Hae-na’s face crumples into tears. She sobs that she’s sorry, that this wasn’t what she meant.
As Dong-chan walks away, he recalls Hae-na’s words, and their recent conversations strike out at his conscience and his hurt heart. Upon reaching the lobby, he pauses, battling with himself — then turns back.
He pounds on her door, and pushes his way inside again. This time, he grabs Hae-na to him in a hug, then kisses her. As the door swings shut on the camera, his jacket slips to the floor…
COMMENTS
Ooh, finally some physical action between the lovers! (Although it was better done in Coffee Prince.) I really didn’t think we’d be getting anything more than another peck or two, because this drama has been strangely and almost laughably innocent in its depiction of romance. (Like I said, it’s been like a high school romance — or middle school — with the teasing and bickering and hand-holding.)
I don’t think Episode 14 made any more cold hard sense than Episode 13, but at least it was markedly better because it hit on an emotional beat. That last scene stood out because Hae-na and Dong-chan seem to connect most when they are engaged in intense emotional conflict. Not so much during the lovey-dovey stuff, which went on waaay too long in this episode. Remember how I mentioned the writer’s tendency to overdo motifs? The whole seaside frolicking bit is another example of that, and at one point I asked my screen, “What the hell is going on?” I think it was about the time Dong-chan leapfrogged over Hae-na on the beach.
But the reason I love the argument near the ending is because it’s a nice bit of reality. Hae-na losing everything for love — now THAT’S actually a meaty topic to explore, and one that this drama should have struck upon about four episodes ago, not when we’re heading into its final week. Passion and attraction are great and all — but how would Hae-na fare if she were forced to do her own laundry, cleaning, and cooking, as Dong-chan suggested? I’d love to see her actually having to face those issues rather than playing house with Dong-chan at Eui-joo’s — where, frankly, she didn’t actually have responsibilities. (She didn’t pay mortgage or rent or buy the groceries. In fact, the only thing she bought was a present from Gucci.) Alas, like with her job at Kang San, Hae-na never gets beyond pretending to be a grown-up.
Yoon Sang-hyun did a great job in that scene when he tells Hae-na why he let her go. Until that moment, he seems to be the typical self-sacrificing lover, giving up his own happiness for Hae-na’s own good, but when he tells her that he has nothing to lose for her, I felt the impact of that line. Whoa. That’s true, and it must suck. He’d pursued her because he had a lot to gain, but now he laments that he has nothing to lose. Dramas tend to frame the unbalance in relationships in terms of what the two sides possess. We see it time and time again whenever a rich guy falls for a poor girl (or very rarely, rich girl with poor boy). So it’s nice to consider, for once, that being poor also means that one must contend with having a lack of something to give up. And given the gender dynamics here, and the fact that Korean men are expected to provide, this must be a blow to Dong-chan’s pride as a man — one who is already subservient to Hae-na as her direct employee, to boot.
Now if only we could have actually SEEN any of this stuff explored in the drama!

yay! it's almost over so all the actors and actresses could be freed from this drama to choose better roles with a more coherent plot next time! i really want to know about haena's past love!! and it looks like despite the bad script, YEH is still performing well! i can feel her tearful emotions leaping off the screencap.

Gotta say that Yoon Eun Hye made me a believer in her acting this episode. Her crying scene was executed so believably well and very impressive!
She is one of the very few actress that has that natural and raw quality in her acting. I cant seem to take my eyes away from her when she's onscreen. i dont know how to explain it, it's weird.
Too bad the script is not very good, such good talent wasted in this series! Hopefully next time all of them make sure to check the scriptwriter's past works to make sure their prior work were good before signing the contract. i did a little research and wasn't impressed by the writers previous works.

How can the actors choose a good script unless it is all on paper ahead of time?
From what i know they get a barely filled in outline and have to contend with really
radical shifts in story line or NO story worth telling.
Don't they just choose on the basis of the writer and PD's last work? Please enlighten.

I really like your recaps for this drama. They're insightful, honest, and detailed enough for me to keep following along. I haven't been bothering to watch lately because the episodes are so crammed full of useless crap that have little or no value to the plot. And LOL I totally agree with you about the *extreme* overuse of the phrase "because I'm Kang Hye-Na!" I mean, really? Get a little more creative, dialogue-writers.

To summarise this series, it is like watching a 1st class train wrecking beautifully off its rail and heading straight for a cliff.
Having given up on the series 2 episodes ago, i am considering this series be a text book of what is not to do with Korean drama.
The only saving grace is YEH who looked gorgeous in so called 'no makeup' mode, to the next which can only be described as 'horrendous'. What really? Pink pants, fur, indoors and those heavy water proof eye liner (she went home to get changed and decide to get her make up done before bed??! Did she just decide that she is going to cry but still want to look good?). It was so random!!
Just like with the rest of the episodes, it is a case of 'where did the heck did that come from ?!'
There were so many of these disjointed groan out loud moments, I have actually started to entertain myself creating a drinking game counting all the clichés, repeated stupid same love song, and every stupid piece of dialogue that come about which made the whole experience a laugh.
To quoteJB's translation of this precious dialogue, it pretty much summarized my problem with the Haena Character and this whole ‘love relationship’ beside the 12 old writing of the so called script writers.
--------------------------
Consider substitute Hae-na with Paris Hilton:
Paris: “You still don’t know me that well. I never regret things — because I’m Paris Hilton.
(Comment: Spoilt bitch from hell with unrealistic sense of entitlement and self worth).
Paris: But there is one thing I regret — that I’m not just Paris Hilton, but the Paris Hilton of the Hilton Group Group
(Comment: uhh… okay you just contradicted yourself from 2 sec ago, how can you not realise you looks stupid in doing so).
Paris: If I had grown up in a normal family as a normal child, it would have been less difficult on you. But what can I do? I’m Paris Hilton and I don’t change, so even if it’s hard for you, you have to accept it.
(Comment: You are not normal, because you are kind of retarded. You are Paris Hilton, I get it!! A spoilt selfish brat who cares about no one but yourself? ill grand father, poor butler, And despite all the trials and tribulation you learnt absolutely nothing?)
Paris: Because I can’t help being Paris Hilton (okay, you gotta stop… really you are killing me! *snort*)
[More comment: So you like the giglo who likes you because he like your cry.
----------------------------------
I might be too harsh to bash the episodes, on this but having revisited coffee prince yesterday to remind of myself how good can drama get, this is a hopeless let down. All 4 leads deserve much much better. Hope i don't cause offence to all those that likes this series, but it is might be good to get another perspective right? Anyways, i better stop my own rant, will carry on the lurking mode from now on.

UHmm.. sorry the posting got sent 3 times, some problem with the ajax submission.
Please delete preivous 2 posts. I'd like to add the whole love thing doesn't work for me. The whole premise of giglo who intend to con a heiress but ends up falling in love because he like the way she cries (come on... really?!), and she ends up falling in loved him (and cheated with her bf) in return because she is not 'normal' just doesn't pass the grade with me. I don't know how YEH's management feel about this, i'd be very curious to see the finger pointing in 2 weeks time, similar to that witch drama.

From the caps i read My Fair Lady is CRAP i actually prefer people who review K dramas with a critical EYES. I prefer people who Focus on the GOOD AND THE BAD of the PLOT AND ACTING rather then calling the writing plot great. There are very few people who know how to review dramas SAD BUT TRUE and although lately i find myself DISAGREEING with most of JAVA reviews i sill like this website. Sometimes I need a brake from overexposed POP IDOLS with no talent.

I just don't understand!!!
Am I the only one who doesn't get Dongchan's "I Only Have Myself to Sacrifice for Love" speech? How does that make it less cowardly? For one, isn't it the exact same thing as the "You Have Too Much to Sacrifice" speech? Neither of them make any sense because the premise is that you are letting the person you love go so they can be happy, but you know that they wont be happy without you...especially since the "letting go" usually involves some kind of deceit of betrayal.
Which brings me to my second conundrum: In what universe is what Dongchan did alright? He totally sold Haena out! Yet another KDrama plot line that I HATE HATE HATE is the righteous (read, 'poor') lover deciding whats best for the naive (read, 'rich') lover without once consulting them. Then they patronize, break up, or lie, or run away from their lover, or some combination of those three without a word of explanation and we're supposed to applaud them for being so self-sacrificed! If Dongchan really wanted to do the "right thing," shouldn't he have sat down with Haena and said "I'm not comfortable with this. It's not fair that you have to give up everything to be with me. I don't think it will make either of us happy in the end." That way she at least gets to have a say. If she insists on staying with him and he still doesn't feel comfortable with it, by all means, break up with her like a man! Don't lie to her and get her hopes up then leave her high and dry!
And, finally, what goes through the minds of people who think it's a good idea to ambush someone into a formal engagement meeting? Why was anyone surprised that Haena refused to go through with it? How did a business mogul, an hot-shot lawyer and a street smart working man put their heads together, come up with that ridiculous plan and all think to themselves "This is sure to work?"
I will seriously never understand some of these silly, but all to common, plot devices in the KDrama world... but, then again, I probably shouldn't knock 'em; they are obviously working because, as much as I complain, I keep coming back.

This episode is a refreshing after so many random lousy ones. I actually liked this one a lot. And also the beach scene, draggy but nonetheless very romantic and sweet.
Not sure whether anyone notice this glitch, when Hye Na was suppose to go back to Seoul, she was wearing the purple dress with black stockings. But when she arrived at the Hotel, she was wearing a black dress with no stockings. And she supposedly had no time to return home. Strange.
The last 10 mins were great. At last, the main leads are able to display their acting prowess. The emotions and expressive eyes were intense. Good!
Hopefully episode 15 and 16 will be even better=)

@57 'can't agree with you more!
If grandpa's purpose of hiring the butler is to straighten Kang Hae Na's messed up character then it's not working. He made it even worse as he made a cheater out of her. I just can't agree with the whole loving either, it is not acceptable just not the right thing to do, not a good example for our young viewers. Where's the moral value here? I'm sorry to say but It's absolutely ridiculous!

i like how there are little notes slot into various parts of the recaps talking about your feelings/thoughts about it. i find it very entertaining, sometimes even more so than the storyline itself. looking forward to your reviews on ep 15 & 16!

Not every fans of YEH will be pissed off when their idol been criticized. Contrary to the "other" fans I really appreciate what JB has been showed us about the MFL flaws. Sadly to say (since I'm a YEH fans) but I agree with most of JB comment about this drama. Although I can't denied it, that there're some good moment and great acting from the 4 actors, especially from the two Yoons. But it's very rare comparing to the bad ones. And yes, I think it's mostly due to the bad script writing rather than the acting. To bad since the actors are good actors IMO. Aside from the bad story telling I really appreciate the 4 actors to continue their filming since some of them has been admitted that they have difficulty to understand the character. I'm glad they're stick to this drama till the end and not just walk away (like some actors did). Two epi more to go and the actors can go to a separate way and pick up another projects.
As a fan, I hope YEH can learn from this experience and be more carefull whenever she pick up another project in the future. I hope she will choose another project soon and not wait for 2 years again. And please choose good project this time...
Anyway thanks alot for your recap JB. I hope you will recap the two last episodes. Peace :0

My view from these comments, we summarise - actually what fans had written here about the yoons is their kissing acts,
that's all nothing else to expound ??

stop with the YEH was so great in her acting when all I heard is she cries good. I admit she has potential but in this drama she failed to act the insensible HN of previous episodes she even doesn't have the rich mannerisme HN's charater is needed ! That's why the way she is now is unbelievable because her change was too abrupt since her acting was inconvincing.
I know you love YEH like there is no tomorrow but sorry she was bad to ok in this drama.

The discussion seems to be hottest when it’s about a drama that has the ability to arouse emotions but has a lot of flaws as well.
I remember „Boys Over Flowers“. I didn’t like it at all, even started to skip through the later episodes instead of watching them properly and always thought that it could have been done so much better. Dramabeans commented on all the flaws and still enjoyed watching it. I guess, here it’s the same, and I can understand such arbitrary feelings very well.
I’ve got two reasons for watching Asian dramas. Firstly, I enjoy the cheesiness and the positive feelings the story/actors can arouse. I don’t watch K- or Tdramas for ‘intellectual reasons’. I’d rather watch a documentary or an art house movie if I want to broaden my horizon. To me watching Kdramas is like reading some cute dime novel. (The more so as I have to read the subs to fully understand what’s going on.) I want to enjoy and relax and I don’t take them too seriously. I am sure there are lots of Kdramas that are really clever, but usually I prefer the light, easy going ones. Thus I avoid sad endings and don’t watch any drama in which one of the leads is going to die of a terrible illness.
However I love to read what everybody thinks about a drama. It’s interesting and enlightening. Often people notice things that I have missed, value something that left me cold or criticize what I liked. It never affects the way I enjoy the dramas. It just makes me think more about it and makes up for the dumbness of watching such trivial stuff.
@59 z:
I totally agree with you in all you’ve said.
I don’t understand Dong Chan words in the final scene either. Since Dramabeans sort of praised them I have been thinking about them but somehow I don’t think they make any sense. Unfortunately I haven’t come to any conclusion yet.
This is the only thing I can say: If he stayed with her he would have to give up more: his pride. (Because of his lower social status and his inability to provide for her the standard of living she is used to and he would have to suffer from the resentment of the society regarding his actions.)
And if she thought that it would be best for him not to be with her she would give up herself, too. But she doesn’t think that way.
Anyhow, Dong Chan wasn’t convinced by his own words, so he came back right after they were out of his mouth.
One thing I want to add is that I really like Hye Na for her honest and true feelings. She might seem quite childish and weak, doesn’t work hard, is spoiled and so on, but she actually stands up for her feelings and never really told a lie.
Dong Chan, however, has been lying or hiding something throughout the episodes. He never gave a completely honest reason for his actions or proofed his arguments to be weak or false because his following behavior didn’t match them. And one of his worst lies was when he made the arrangements for Hye Na’s reconciliation with Tae Yoon while telling her that they will work things out together.

I really appreciate the effort of JB recaps of fair lady although i disagree some of it.RESPECT!everyone is entitled for their own opinion.LOOPHOLES in the story is frustrating but nonetheless it thrilled me the lead characters getting together.PORTRAYING teen schoolers even i notice that part because i assume from the beginning that this is matured stuff that has something worth learning for.somehow it seems like a fairy tale wishy wishy upon a star.i think this drama has a lot more twist than it's showing.i never seen hye na growing up and dong chan trying hard enough to not fall inlove in to her.and eventhough they eventually to be together dong chan still has a lot to prove about himself.there is also tae yoon realizing that he is into eui joo.in the begining i thought tae yoon and eui joo has chemistry back then if only hye na didn't come between them.too bad it's gonna end soon!I am surely gonna miss this drama and the casts who are totally great!hope to see more of them after this drama.

Although this a great pairing, it feels more like a whirlwind romance than the usual thing we experience in a kdrama...like there's obvious chemistry and we can all feel the love, but they JUST started dating 2 episodes ago and all this stuff is thrown at our face....i think it should of of been extended by a couple more episodes. Also, i think we should stop being surprised or nit-picking too much about the flaws of this drama, because obviously by now we get this isn't a new -of- age original story of a man type of drama, but the old trendy /cute /flawed favorite we know well and love( though i don't know why YEH would pick this a her comeback role). but i think i speak for a lot of people, including dramabeans, that ultimately i'm enjoying this drama, or else she wouldn't keep recapping it people XD.
p.s. i have to admit, i bet people who watch this enjoy it because one of they're favorite actors are in it...i'l be completely honest, i doubt i would watch it if YSH and YEH weren't in it >_<.

Like Sebas even if there's some flaws i still enjoy watching this drama and likewise the two leads are remarkably good at their roles. YSH and YEH are a good team and hope to see more of them in the future that is teamed up again! I love all the episodes and rewatching it now & then. I love the innocence they portray here which is typical of Kdramas.... innocence can also be in mid 20s or late 30s the storyline doesn't have to have two people who are teenagers to be such i dunno how well i can explain it as i'm not too eloquent but i hope you get the picture. I really like the way the scriptwriter portrays them as such, slow in skinship and people always compare this with Coffee Prince or other projects YEH was in, stop mixing apples and oranges...you're watching My Fair Lady or Lady Castle. Overall, this drama wld be one of my ten favorite Kdramas of all time! I can't wait to get hold of the DVD once it becomes available! Meanwhile i'll probably rewatch it now & again as i really like the chem betwn the two leads! I love YSH & YEH more! I'm feeling sad that it's ending next week as this drama became so addictive that I always look forward to the day that it'll be on.
Thnx for the recap!

@73 same here...the tender moments of dong chan and hyena just doesn't leave your imagination that fast...yeah that ending was just warm, and it seems like you can feel what hyena must be feeling at that moment when dong chan came back, kissed her and then they're behind closed doors! @__@

Thought it was funny how the called each other Seo jibsa and agassi even while they were dating. I think this is one of those rare first time when they addressed each other as Seo Dong Chan and Hye Na. Not formally. Just by their names. This made the whole scene more real, intense. More like man-woman relationship than the butler-mistress one. Loved that whole scene. And glad there is some physical action, too, because Dong Chan is like 30-something while Hye Na is almost mid-20s. They aren't Gu Jun Pyo and Jandi -- they aren't high schoolers. Yeah, sure, this drama has been kind of sweet/innocent. But it's about time these two acted like their ages! And so late in the drama...? Aww...
The last two episodes better kick ass!

Purely eye-candy now - not using brain at all to watch - skim - this drama. @31 rainerust: I agree, I also think EJ and TY look cute together. And I love MCW - her character protrayal is the only one that can make me sincerely laugh instead of the "WTH is that?"gurgle I often emit when watching this MFL mess. Hehe.
JB, love that you don't bandwagon and can give out constructive criticism even on people you like. 1 more week and we're clear. The drama outside of MFL is more interesting than the show. lols..

i thought hyena's shoes were going to wash out with the tide when she left them on the beach, hehe.
to the people who are confused about her hair: she ties up her longer hair in a little bun, which i'm sure you have seen previously, so it looks like she has a short haircut. and then she lets it down when she's feeling lazy. it's actually pretty neat. good idea, although i personally would not be able to pull it off :3
man, that ending really reminded me of coffee prince. except the roles are reversed.
WHEN IS GONGYOO GONNA DO DRAMAS AGAIN?!?!?! i want him back ><
time to watch cp again... it's been too long...<3

thanks for the review and detailed story.. the script is really good..but how come that the audience need to wait for episode 14 for this to happen? probably, like you what you said, high school romance is the level of the relationship..i stopped watching the drama when the butler and haena started liking each other...because I don't see the chemistry between them and the lead actor looks mature for eun hye's character...well, maybe i was just looking for someone like gong yoo.. ^^ but since i am a fan of eun hye, i am stil curious on what is happening ....thanks thanks again,...and i am looking forward for ep. st ^^

Finally, the drama had unfolded and will end very soon. Let's just enjoy each scene but let's also hear what the end comments will be. It's really fun to watch the parallel show at the sidelines.
At least now YEH can concentrate in finding her new project. Wouldn't it be more exciting if a contest is held "choosing the next project for YEH"? Prize must be a part in the show. HAH HAH HAH. . . But ain't this a good vehicle for YEH and for us fans to ENSURE THAT THE NEXT PROJECT IS WHAT WE REALLY WANT? Based on the excellent comments of the bloggers here, I can sense some professionals in the acting field. They can for sure come out with a very good drama with an outstanding script for YEH. How about that JB and the rest? Thank you in advance.

somehow i knew that this will happen to YEH. she became too choosy and didn't work for almost 2 years. In the end, she got a bad script =(. I hope the 4 of them would be given the best script in next they do kdrama after MFL.

This is not the drama genre I would have enjoyed, but I have to say I've had a good time so far.
After finishing the previous drama 'Partner,' I thought I would watch just one ep of MFL (I knew none of the stars except for YEH). But the scene when DC appeared at the airport kidnapping HN captured me. Then, the unanticipated connection between the lead stars started to emerge, and YEH and YSH gave many lovable moments that made me want to see them more. The script is really too weak to support the acting (esp. after HN revealed her affect toward DC), still, in each ep. there's something worth watching. The line from DC in this ep. surely is among the top of the list.
Like many have said, this drama could use some consistency in the characters. It's a torture to see them fooling around when they could have given solid, memorable performances. I mean, all four of them seem capable of doing so but sadly drowned by the hodgepodge script. I would also appreciate if there was a little more time to film the drama--it's sad to see the Yoons turning more tired and tired as the drama unfolds.
Personally, I find the hook of this drama to lie mostly on YSH. I can see many young viewers find it difficult to love DC. In my view, it is totally the scriptwriter's fault -- not to adjust the dynamics among the characters after Mr Yoon has been cast for DC. Take an example, in a recent Taiwanese drama 'Black & White,' one of the main characters (Hero) was modified based on the change in cast, yielding great success in the first-time actor as well as the entire drama.
Anyway, there are many impressive components in this drama: the scenery, fashion (I really like DC's t-shirts), acting, songs (didn't know YSH&YEH sang some of those, wow), pairing of a poor nothing-to-lose smooth guy with a rich crude gal etc. And thanks for the recaps!!

OH MY GOD! THIS IS THE BEST DRAMA EVER! okay. i exxagerate. but since i haven't seen a korean drama i mean a REALLY GREAT korean drama a quite a time (the latest was boys before flowers, and it wasn't that very good at all), this really brings up the good feeling, cuteness like full house n my girl, intense emotions like que sera sera, and anything a FANTASTIC drama could have done (well at least to ME!) XD. aahh.. i can't stop smiling n grinning in the past few episodes. can't wait for it to finish! okay, i know i'll have to be prepared for THE CLIMAX CONFILCT.. hope the ending will turn out the BEST! haha

The first song is "Oppa" by WAX with her own hilarious twist ;) and the second one is "Like being hit by a bullet" by Baek Ji Young. And there is another version of it called "I remember I've loved before" by Peter Ho.
The one song I can't seem to know is the one DC sang to HN at the beach.. Any ideas??
