KBS’s new family drama Three Brothers
by javabeans
KBS has a new family drama in the lineup for weekends, Three Brothers [수상한 삼형제], which follows recent hit Sons of Sol Pharmacy. Perhaps in search of the same success, Three Brothers seems to be aiming for a similar tone and premise (though perhaps a bit less comedic than Sol Pharmacy), with its focus on family stories. How will its three brothers compare to the winning combination of Sol Pharmacy‘s four?
With a week till its premiere, Three Brothers held its production press conference on the afternoon of the 12th. In attendance were the actors who comprise the titular trio, as well as the actresses who play their wives: Ahn Nae-sang, Oh Dae-kyu, and Lee Jun-hyuk are paired with Do Ji-won, Kim Hee-jung, and Oh Ji-eun.
In addition to its cast, the drama is attracting notice for its scriptwriter Moon Young-nam, whose has numerous hit dramas to her name: First Wives Club, Infamous Chil Princesses, A Rosy Life. This drama is being described as a heartwarming and lively conventional drama, which means that we probably won’t get much in the way of radically inventive ideas but can probably expect to be entertained with a reliable offering of family conflict and some makjang tendencies, if those kinds of dramas are up your alley.
According to PD Jin Hyung-wook, the drama draws upon three grown brothers jockeying for their parents’ favor. The standard mother- and daughter-in-law conflicts apply, as well as tensions between the brothers- and sisters-in-law. Ahn Nae-sang responded jokingly to a question asking for the difference between Three Brothers and Sol Pharmacy, answering, “Our characters are more wonderful,” adding, “Also, our script quality is excellent.”
I’m not sure I’m in the mood for a conventional drama, but if you are, Three Brothers premieres on October 17.

Weren't all three actors in "First Wives' Club" as brothers and brothers-in-law? Talk about recycling.

It's our mini-Jo Gook Soo-In! I'm so happy to see him front and center with a big role in this drama.

In Infamous Chil Princesses, Park In Hwan was upset for having only daughters, so his oldest daughter is in the military. Now in Three Brothers, he gets to have three sons and one of them is in the military, heh heh.
Anyways, I have so many shows I need to catch up on, I don't know if i can take on another *sigh*. I'll still try this...

Jo Gook Assistant!!! yeah... i miss seeing him after City Hall, i'm glad now he will take on bigger role, more screen time for him :P
Haven't see First Wives Club yet, but i saw The Chil Princesses, i think the premise will be almost the same, but if it's the conventional drama like The Chill Princesses, i don't know if i'm going to watched it though...
But maybe i'll stick around for Lee Joon Hyuk :P

Aaaargh! I did NOT need another drama to follow! But I absolutely have to check in to see what Lee Jun-Hyuk is up to; he really gained a lot of my respect, with how well he played off of Cha Seung Won in City Hall.
Plus he is adorable. There, I admitted it.

I haven't seen her on any series (as far as I can tell) after her role as 경빈마마게었어 in 女人天下... (pardon me if the spelling will be wrong; I'm not too used to 대하사극 language :P)
Anyhoo...HA SOO-IN!!! cutiepie from City Hall (2nd to Jo Guk) :P :b :P

I agree with bbm - Jo Guk assistant in City Hall? Great! If only for him, I will watch this new drama. He looks good too because of his boyish look, so I won't miss this new show. Let us see how he delivers in this one. Again, 'wish there will be a sequel to City Hall. Perhaps he can have a love interest there. Sorry, can't have enough of City Hall!

I'm actually looking forward to this one. I didn't like Son's of Sol Pharmacy maybe because of the comedic side of it. Hope my expectations are right about this drama. I'll be keeping an eye on this one!

The mother-in-law in this series is the mother-in-law from h-ll. There is nothing likable about her. She treats her first daughter-in-law who is married to the second son like a slave , and has no respect, warm feelings, understanding or caring for her daughter-in-law. (Thank goodness my mother-in-law was not like that). She is self-absorbed about how she worked so hard for her sons, but isn't that what a mother is to do???? No one made her have kids. She has her own pity party almost every week. Poor me, my mother-in-law treated me terribly, but she does the same to her daughter-in-law without a thought or care that she is no different.
First born son spoiled rotten and at this point, have no respect for him, second born son also treats his wife just like his mother does. Disrespectfully, and yet she cooks, cleans, raises the kids, and takes her mother-in-law's abuse, and is a beautiful persona inside and out.. Unfortunately, this second son doesn't understand what a diamond of a wife he has and is about ready to fall headlong into a noose of his own making. The third son, Isang, I love for his passion and heart. He is wonderful husband material. This drama is better than I thought it would be at the beginning. I like the Dad. He plays the part well.

Isang - a fine young man , should be an example to Korean young generation for
human understanding & respect to elders as well as the other sex.
Oh Ji-eun plays her role well and is also a VERY beautiful Korean young lady.
If I am still young - would like to have a date with her (minus her temperament)

This is my favorite Korean Drama. My favorite part is the love relationship between Isang and Eoyeong. I also like Umi and the two dads in this.
I also like Umi's mom. The thing I hate about the story is Umi's husband has never treated her loving and kind. He abuses her mentally and emotionally, and he has the gall to flirt with the ugly, evil woman who poor Umi was dumb enough to befriend and trust. Umi got that woman the job working with her husband, and now they may commit adultery. I'm really getting tired of seeing this in the drama.
Him mistreating his wife and flirting and being so caring to this nasty woman, and the heartache he is putting Umi through. My favorite part is Isang and Eoyeong, but I honestly hate when they fight all the time. Eoyeong's character can be harsh and cold. She should be softer and be more loving to Isang.
What I can't stand is that, Isang wouldn't give up on marrying her, and now he's flirting with the prosecutor a bit. This absolutely does not make any sense. His character was not anything like this, for most of the show. He was totally into Eoyeong. He would never want to hang out with any other woman except for her. They're newlyweds, and he's hanging out alone, having meals with this creepy prosecutor, who has the hots for him, and doesn't care if he's married. Now he's turning his phone off so his wife can't contact him, and he's lying to her making her think he's working, when he's with this creepy girl, instead of with his wife. The writer must really love infidelity. This is shameful. I'm sorry but this does not make a drama more exciting and enjoyable. The drama is almost over, and pretty much the whole drama, Umi's husband has never treated her well. It really won't mean a thing, if at the end, somehow he changes. Isang is turning into a creep. Even when he and his brothers went in the mountains to hike and they jumped in freezing water, he said, his wish is for his wife to really love him. What a crock! Now he's hanging out all the time alone with this creep!
If the writers want these two brothers to end up with these bitches, get it over with!
The poor wives should leave them or hang out alone with other men, to let their creepy husbands know how it feels. What's crazy, is Isang was so hurt and jealous, when Eoyeong went back for a little while with her creepy Ex. before Isang and her got married. He told all his family Eoyeong was the only woman for him, and now he's lying and hanging out all the time with this creep. It makes me sick, honestly. I'm upset that the story isn't turning out the way I and many fans are hoping it would. If it's going to be a sad ending, with the 2 brothers leaving their wives for these useless creeps, I just want to get to the end. I don't want to wish for a nice ending, if it's just going to be sad. I just want to know the end in a way. It's sad, Isang and Eoyeong are newlyweds. They should be so in love, not able to keep their hands off each other, instead we see them fighting and Isang hanging out alone with this creepy woman. Eoyeong's dinky, obnoxious sister is happier with her marriage to the sweet dorky cop. It's not fair, Isang and Eoyeong are more interesting characters. Why couldn't the writers have Isang and Eoyeong happily married, after all the hell they went through to get married in the first place.
All they do is fight and now he only hangs out with this other woman how absolutey ridiculous! What's even dumber is, it's bad enough for one brother to be flirting, you know, "Umi's husband", but now the upright, good brother Isang, who even told his other brother to be more caring to Umi, share his feelings and problems with her etc., is now sneaking around having secret meals with this creepy prosecutor and lying to his wife. Now he's a scary, lying, unfaithful hypocrite. The writers want to turn his character into this? He seems to be getting an "instant connection" with this creep now, when Eoyeong was the only one he had an "instant connection" with through the whole show. This is stupid, ridiculous, does not make any sense. I hope the story will turn around and end up happy for all the couples in the end. I wish the writers would make these two
creepy ladies get lost and hit the road. They need to get out of this drama. These 2 creepy characters should not have been in this drama in the first place.
Or at least, they should never have been interested in the two brothers. It's sick!
I believe most of the fans, especially those who like Isang and Eoyeong the most of the characters, would rather see them being loving with each other through the whole show. Wish the writers would wake up and make the story go that way! Here's hoping to a wonderful ending, and not a tragic, sad ending. Many fans, will be disappointed if it's a sad ending. We stayed with the drama all the way, it won't be fair to us fans, if it's not the happy ending we're hoping for. We will eventually find out, how it will end. We will be keeping our fingers crossed! It has been a good drama for the most part. We will be sad when it ends anyway.
Wish that it could be a long series, but only if the story was happier and more enjoyable. No one wants to see a sad story go on and on. I wouldn't want to see the 2 brothers endlessly, through a long drama, flirt and fool around with these creepy women and lie, mistreat and not cherish their wives. They need to be more like their father. He's faithful, even though he has more right than his sons, to be unfaithful. His wife is a tyrant, yet he is an upstanding man. Wish his wife would change and be better to everyone. My dad was a lot like their dad. Very loyal to his family and humble.

I agree with everything you said. I think both Isang and HC do not really love or care for their wives.
With Isang it was the hunt of the unattainable that was his motivation for EY and not love.
He went back to her for his family but it was the prosecutor that he really wanted. EY was right when she said that Isang was a player. Her mistake was not to board the plane to Italy and return to him. Isang was a phony and did not reveal his true nature until after he was married. They should have been allowed to divorce. He constantly disrespected his wife for the prosecutor and even in the final episode they had a wardrobe match.
He also hinted strongly to the prosecutor that he liked her more than his wife and he wouldn't have minded if EY had divorced him and he could go with her.
The problem for the audience is that we were duped into thinking that Isang was a wonderful character when he was in fact a cruel jerk
