Jeon Ji-hyun considers Korean remake of Zettai Kareshi
by javabeans
This is not finalized (so take with a grain of salt), but Jeon Ji-hyun‘s potential drama comeback just may come in the Korean adaptation of Japanese manga Absolute Boyfriend, aka Zettai Kareshi. The kdrama will be directed by PD Kim Min-shik of Queen of Housewives and Before and After: Plastic Surgery.
Jeon Ji-hyun is currently busy surveying projects to finalize her decision, and the Zettai remake is reportedly a strong contender. (It had considered casting U-Know Yunho at one point, who moved on to Heading to the Ground instead.) A source with the production said, “We understand that for a long while, Jeon Ji-hyun has been carefully preparing to take a role in a Korean drama. We are working out the details of her casting, and hope for a positive result.”
In the original fantasy-romance manga, a girl accidentally gets a made-to-order boyfriend android from a website, only to find out that she has to pay an exorbitant amount to keep him — unless she helps the company conduct research to improve future models. She must then hide his non-human status from others, and he starts to develop human emotions.
In the kdrama version, the lead is not a teenager but a 30-year-old woman who is a stylist at a beauty salon without any clients. She is betrayed by her first love who becomes an overnight success as a movie star. Feeling the sting, she orders up her ideal man in robot form, aka her “absolute boyfriend.”
Absolute Boyfriend will be a 16-episode drama to air on MBC either at the end of this year or in early 2010. If she decides on the drama, it will be Jeon Ji-hyun’s first in ten years, since 1999’s Happy Together. After seeing such a lot of the same old kdramas airing one after another, this plot sounds like a refreshing change.
(Of course, the big question — aside from whether Jeon will sign on — is: Who plays the perfect manbot?? My wishlist: Kim Kang-woo or Gong Yoo!)

i have yet to see a japanese drama remake that has succeeeded in korea. bof failed as well. to be honest what drama's rating falls on the last episode?? lol. BOF. anyways the story line they have just isn't accepted in korea. its cheesy, weird, and just unrealistc. jjh definitely would be making the most stupidest decision if she was to accept this drama. ( i've watched first 2 ep. and i almost threw my laptop across the room cuz it was so stupid. had horrible ratings in japan as well. lol it's prolly not even going to happen anyways)

the drama makers that r trying to get ready for the remake is only using JJH's name to gain attention for the drama. what idiot top star would want to ruin their career/image thrown away by returning to the brown screen with such a cliche unrealstically boring and horrible drama like zettai??? none. she's gonna take the same step as jin jin hee.

yeah.. hm this article only says she was given script not that she's accepting in and doubt she will. the article itself looks like it was released by the drama remake production team to gain attention by using jeon ji hyun's name. how desperate. i can already see this drama failing. its not what koreans dig anyway lol.

Wow..one of the very few Jdramas that I've actually watched.
.....buuuuuuuut can't say that I enjoyed it. It started off very fun but quickly became annoying. I'll hold hope that the Korean adaptation changes the storyline and not have that unsatisfying ending like the Jdrama.

I have seen the jdrama and really enjoyed it. The story was very good, and the "absolute boyfriend" was easy to love. The only down side is, I would've liked the main girl to end with the human guy, not the robot, but such is drama.
I like your picks for the "Absolute Boyfriend," except in the case of Gong Yoo. While he is totally dreamy (no one's questioning that!! :3), I don't think he has enough raw acting talent to play a good robot boyfriend. In the jdrama, the best part about the robot boyfriend was his un-humanness. I mean, he had very robot-like movements, facial expressions. The actor was able to maintain very strict movements and faces throughout long shoots. I have my doubts as to whether or not Gong Yoo would be the best choice as far as acting.
That's really the big thing I want to see in the kdrama version. I want to see the robot actor being very robotic.

oh wow a lot of japanese remakes after BOF...i absolutely adored Zettai Kareshi!! It was so sad at the end though T_T. i think Gong Yoo would be great for the role also...but then again I'm biased when it comes to that guy XD

I was aware of the jdrama and saw bits of it, but I read the manga every month when it came out in japan and just hated it.
It really has some distorted moral values. (Even if it's for fantasy...) I read it until the end but even then I just couldn't stand it. I'm pretty sure there are some other good comics out there. They should try making something else...

Wah..this is interesting. I've watched Zettai Kareshi, but K version? I'm still indifferent about this. Eventhough I love Gong Yoo, I don't think he'll be good as manbot.. Phiysically, I think someone like Daniell Henney would be fit. And I think the manbot must be younger than the female's character.. Who would buy an ajusshi robot? :P

I kind of enjoyed the J-version. That's the thing with jdoramas - short and sweet and rarely dragging. I liked Hiro in this and Hayami Mokomichi was a good robot. The storyline wasn't really great though, and when the special came out, I had lost interest, so I haven't watched that one.
The k-version would need somebody who is stunning physically and I agree with Javabeans, Kim Kang-woo *swoon* he is picture perfect! LOL. I would definitely watch it if they cast him!

i have a problem with dramas taken from mangas/ animes that don't follow the storyline. i find it direspectful both to the fans and to the orgional author.
can it really be called absolute boyfriend if the only thing it has in common with the real story is a robot boyfriend?
i've read the manga and it was pretty complex and interesting in its own right. the jdorama twisted it all around and this one looks like its twisted even more off base.
why not call it something else and simple say it was inspired by the manga?
i'd like to see a taiwanese version of this story, at least they tend to follow the actual storyline.

aw I loved Absolute Boyfriend..the robot boyfriend was really cute, not to mention the human boyfriend was also really hot....so whoever they cast for the male leads, especially the robot one since he's suppose to be the "perfect" boyfriend has to be a total cutie AND a good actor----- i agree, cast Gong Yoo...

The Japanese version was cute but it did lack those passionate and intense moments. So I wouldn't mind seeing a Korean version.
The thing is, Jeon Ji-hyun is really bland to me now. I loved her in My Sassy Girl but then she just did a string of mediocre movies... and to be honest, I care more about drama actors then I do movie actors.
And since she's so far removed from dramas I've just lost interest in her.

Like some of you, I loved the Japanese version. Mocomichi was the perfect robot boyfriend and although the movie had flaws (like the actress), I really really loved it. The SP was good too, although it made me flinch at the start. The ending was just too heartbreaking.
As with all remakes, I wish they can pull this off while giving it the justification that the original and the manga needs. I'm kinda ambivalent on this one, since the Japanese version set a standard for me, but Imma give it a shot.... especially if JJH gets paired with someone as mouthwatering as Gong Yoo! <3

I mean shoujo is my drug, I did read the manga before the drama...but complex is soooo not Yuu Watase.
What bugged me a great deal with the manga is I felt like the whole roboto issue is just like a cosplay... just that typical 'ideal/perfect' in your face Watase manwhore (sorry for the language) with her typical 'wowing' label under the sugarcoat, it can be a pervie Jonas brothers who messed around with his groupies (Lucifer?!), a mafia kidnapper/rapist, or in this case a sex toy/robot with a 'dreamy' name Nighto.
And no other culture on earth will possess the love and obsession like the Japanese to even make a cohesive rally for human-roboto romance. I glimpsed the drama just to drool over Hiro but I did get a better argument to root for the robot. And for me, that's what made the drama endearing. If they opt to make the usual typical romance out of it, please skip the whole robot thing. I know the fans of the manga will hate the drama just based on the fact that Soshi was dulled up, AND Riko is just not 'simple' enough to just go for the ride, she's too normal and fuzzy (as in every other 20sth female)....in their most earnest attempt to sell the robot. It's a totally different medium to view the joke of a plot in a shoujo manga vs live action. It'll totally fried my brains if they did stick to Yuu Watase 'vision' of highschooler getting a sex toy (and loving it...).

I love the manga but I am glad tht the Japanese live adaptation storyline was change to suit more mature auditions. But I must say, though the Japanese version has oh so hot eye candies, Hiro and Mokomichi, it lacks a certain something. I'm not sure what it is. It's probably the lack of on screen chemistry, intensity and angst. However, if they can get Gong Yoo as either Night or Soshi, I'll definitely watch this. ^_^

I really disliked the jdrama - the actors were hot but that was about it. The story didn't follow the manga. What's the point of making an adaptation if it doesn't follow the manga? I wouldn't have had a problem with it if it didn't claim to be an adaptation. I have no problem with the aging up of the characters, that wasn't an issue. The heroine didn't care for her robot nearly as much as she did in the manga for one thing - he seemed to be just an annoyance. She seemed to spend all her time trying to get into her boss' pants.
As to the kdrama adaptation I agree with Lee Min Ho as a possible for the robot boyfriend.

I would love to see Rain's comeback drama as Zettai Kareshi... probably wishful thinking, though. Otherwise, I would be very happy to see a new or relatively unknown actor take it on. A new star can emerge!
There's some really strong feelings about Zettai Kareshi... o_o The manga was definitely not my thing, but I kind of enjoyed the drama. Interesting to see how it will translate to Korean viewers, whether it'll stay as comedic and light-hearted as the drama.

"The robot should be played by a tall guy."
For example, casting Cha Seung Woo. My Absolute Ajusshi. :D
Really can't see a drama adaptation of Zettai with established actors over the age of 25. Just the wrong demographic altogether. Very likely that Gong Yoo will opt for a conventional project straight out of the military. Even Rain IMO is not in the right age range for the part.

The "Absolute Boyfriend" has to be tall (183 cm minimum), young, good-looking and fit! I'm thinking of a young Daniel Henney if there is such a person! They could cast a actor/model. I'm thinking Im Ju Hwan, Choi Siwon (SJ, Legend of Hyang Dan) or Jung Il Woo. All 3 have modeling backgrounds where you are required to be still for hours and are tall, hehehe... Lee Minho is tall too but does he fit this?
And if they are using JJH as an actress (who is freaking gorgeous), the guy has to be prettier than her since she is supposed to be a "normal-looking" girl. That will be a problem.
