Jeon Ji-hyun considers Korean remake of Zettai Kareshi
by javabeans
This is not finalized (so take with a grain of salt), but Jeon Ji-hyun‘s potential drama comeback just may come in the Korean adaptation of Japanese manga Absolute Boyfriend, aka Zettai Kareshi. The kdrama will be directed by PD Kim Min-shik of Queen of Housewives and Before and After: Plastic Surgery.
Jeon Ji-hyun is currently busy surveying projects to finalize her decision, and the Zettai remake is reportedly a strong contender. (It had considered casting U-Know Yunho at one point, who moved on to Heading to the Ground instead.) A source with the production said, “We understand that for a long while, Jeon Ji-hyun has been carefully preparing to take a role in a Korean drama. We are working out the details of her casting, and hope for a positive result.”
In the original fantasy-romance manga, a girl accidentally gets a made-to-order boyfriend android from a website, only to find out that she has to pay an exorbitant amount to keep him — unless she helps the company conduct research to improve future models. She must then hide his non-human status from others, and he starts to develop human emotions.
In the kdrama version, the lead is not a teenager but a 30-year-old woman who is a stylist at a beauty salon without any clients. She is betrayed by her first love who becomes an overnight success as a movie star. Feeling the sting, she orders up her ideal man in robot form, aka her “absolute boyfriend.”
Absolute Boyfriend will be a 16-episode drama to air on MBC either at the end of this year or in early 2010. If she decides on the drama, it will be Jeon Ji-hyun’s first in ten years, since 1999’s Happy Together. After seeing such a lot of the same old kdramas airing one after another, this plot sounds like a refreshing change.
(Of course, the big question — aside from whether Jeon will sign on — is: Who plays the perfect manbot?? My wishlist: Kim Kang-woo or Gong Yoo!)

I agree with Lena. I personally hated the J Drama of Absolute Boyfriend, and am probably going to pass on the Korean version, but if Gong Yoo starred in it I would definitely have to take a peak. I kind of wish though that they'd pick up "Kare Kano", "Skip Beat" or even "Nodame Cantabile" since that one is very popular. But that's just wishful thinking.

Gong Yoo would be SOOO cute w/ JJH.
Wait--I just googled Kim Kang-woo and now I feel torn.
They're both so darn cute--they could also pull off the robot-w/-a-heart-of-gold act.
You should write to the casting directors!

I agree and disagree with some of you. :)
I want Gong Yoo OR Kim Kang Woo to play the Absolute Boyfriend. In fact, I don't mind seeing Kim Kang Woo playing a robot for once. (God, I can still remember his Chae Do Woo character and how it still sends shivers to my spine. lol)
Seeing Zettai Kareshi, I could say it was an okay adaptation from a manga. And I liked the fact that they deviated a bit from the manga, since they were supposed to be high school students in the story. Anyway, I liked the Japanese version, it has a flavor on its own. It had some cute and dull moments but not really considered worthy to be a top quality show. Mizushima Hiro and Hayami Mokomichi are both hot (so that's already a plus); although, sometimes I find Aibu Saki's character annoying. Lemme just say I could give it a 7/10 for being cute, dull, and sometimes annoying adaptation from a manga.
On Nodame Cantabile: I haven't read the manga yet, but I do think that the live version is the best yet. And I doubt the Korean version can make their adaptation up to par with the Japanese version. Nodame Cantabile is a crazy, kick-ass show. It was able to stand on its own as an adaptation because it was really perfect and I don't think a Korean version (or Taiwanese, or any other) can topple that. Sometimes, live actions adapted by the Japanese should be left alone; after all, they're the ones who did it anyway, so they know the culture and norm. And its the same with some Korean dramas too.

it's supposed to be a younger guy-older girl pairing.. so Lee MinHo. I think it will be a challenging role for him and i'm sure he can outdo the J-version.

hmmm...i really don't know how i feel about this. i actually really enjoyed the j-version...well more like Hayami Mokomichi total eye-candy. Aibu Saki is a good actress, but i totally wasn't feeling her character...i got quite annoyed with the female lead in both the manga and the dorama adaptation. but if kim kang-woo is on board and may be a different female lead, i could definitely be swayed towards a k-version.

Actually the question should be who will play the robot and her childhood friend? Japanese Zettai Kareshi was okay, but I think they just chose the wrong female actress.
In another case, WHY Zettai Kareshi again ... there's better mangas out there to make into live action. Skip Beat Live Action could have been a good contender or even Kare Kano or Marmalade Boy. NOT Nodame Cantabile because the Japanese drama is too awesome for words that any other remakes of it will become so cheesy and wannabe. Plus Nodame has more Japanese humor that I don't think Koreans can pull off.

I was really excited for the j-version when it came out cuz i really like hayami mokomichi and mizushima hiro a lot...but i only got thru part of the series cuz i felt it just...fell flat. i can't pinpoint where, but i think it had to do with the main girl - either her or her character felt annoying to me and i couldn't continue. depending on who they cast as Night and Soshi, i may change my mind about this k-version...but i do like jeon ji-hyun :)

The best thing about the J-version was the actor playing the robot. Although, the lead actress was cute and right for the role, the main female character was totally too soppy to endear herself for anyone's compassion or affinity.
Even now, I don't know why the other guy fell for her. I can understand the robot falling for her because he was programmed to do so.
oy ... here we go with the comparisons between the J & K versions ... again... ugh!

Tough crowd in this thread! Most of you didn't like Absolute Boyfriend.
Whaaaaa-? I must not have good taste in shows because I loved the live J-live action and I cannot wait for the K- version. The robot has to be someone very, very, very attractive. He doesn't really have to act much -- so Km Hyun Joong comes to mind. But then, towards the end, he will have out-human the humans, and KHJ probably wouldn't be able to pull that off. In the looks department though, he is a great fit. My other Knighto-Roboto choice would be Lee Jun Ki.
...now, I am trying to think of other teen-ish actors who are surreally beautiful... :-)
Fun times.

I didn't care for the jdrama but I adore the manga it's based on so, if done right, this story has potential.
As to who should play the robot? If there is one thing that I have discovered in my years of kdrama watching is that there is no shortage of ridiculously good-looking guys in kdramas. If they were going with age-commensurate, my vote is for Song Seung Hun and, if a little younger, Hyun Bin (and if way younger, Lee Min Ho). I adore Gong Yoo but he is far from picture-perfect-gorgeous. If Joo Ji Hoon didn't have his "unfortunate incident", this was a role he was born to play.
I am not keen on Skip Beat or Nodame so I am OK with them not being turned into kdramas. I think Mars would make an awesome kdrama (I love the Taiwanese version) but perhaps the subject matter is too adult for kdramas.
I wish they'd turn some manhwas into kdramas, in addition to Goong. I'd love to see Snow Drop as a drama.

The j version was very cute. All the actors involved made a good ensemble effort, so the korean version would also have to have totally great eye candy too. If Lee Min Ho was one of them, I would totally watch it.
Btw, I think in the j version, the girl was not a teeenager, but an office worker with aspirations to become a patisserie chef. This is what first got me interested. I'll watch anything related to food.

Oh, Kim Kang-woo would be outstanding in this role! I love Gong Yoo as well, but his looks (to me) are more super-hot, sexy Everyman, while KKW has the physical beauty to embody the character of an android with the "perfect" face. He's also got the ability to exude an eerie exterior calm while hinting at inner turmoil VERY well (see: Story Of A Man).
Jeon Ji-hyun is so unbelievably gorgeous too; what an attractive couple she and KKW would make. Imagining that much beauty onscreen at the same time is almost impossible! :-D

JJH is the most beautiful Korean actress and I will always have a soft corner for her because of My Sassy Gal, one of my first Korean films.
Song Seung Heon and Daniel Henny would make great robots since they are both so inert but then the drama would be really bland and flat.
Lee Junki as someone suggested would be a great choice . I second Kang Dong Won too.
Gong Yoo as a robot? I don't know. He's too juicy to play a robot.

Besides, they both belong to the same talent agency, Sidus + their looks & height are just soooo right!!! if ever, it'll be a "dream - comeback" vehicle for GY, don't you think? what a "gorgeous pairing"!!!

I liked the Jdrama... the theme song is my ringtone (still!) but I am not sure I would like to see the kdrama version of the same... there are some things that don't translate well when they change countries and this drama seems like one of them.. the Jdrama has too many japenese drama elements that I love about japenese dramas (which in turn seem out of place in kdramas)..
I am not sure the over the top exaggerated comedy would go well for one.. and I really don't want to seee another version of the same thing (hopefully they'll change the story a bit)..
I might check out a few episodes if and when it does come though...

I loved Zettai Kareshi and I thing a Korean version should be fun. 16 episodes seems about right. Not too long and dragged out.
I am starting to notice that a lot of J-drama are rumoured or going to be re-made into K-Drama esp. after the super duper success of Boys Before Flowers...wonder if this is just a passing trend.

I really enjoyed Zettai Kareshi, although the ending was a bit weird, but I don't think I would want to see it turned into a Kdrama. I might be one of the few people who thinks this, but I'm not really a fan or Kdrama remakes of Jdramas. I loved Hana Yori Dango, for instance, but I couldn't stand to watch Boys Over Flowers. (I tried! Twice!) I think it's partly the fact that there's nothing new in the plot and I find it incredibly annoying/pointless to watch something if I know what's going to happen, and partly that if the original was really good... they just can't top it (to me).
Plus I agree with some of the above posters, Zettai Kareshi and especially Nodame Cantabile have a lot of Japanese humour that I doubt would translate well. As a story, BOF worked well as a Kdrama because it is a very dramatic, bittersweet, emotional drama.
Although I have to admit, I'll watch anything with Gong Yoo in it. :)

@ 35 Laica, yeah, i know, i'm so afraid that it's going to be something I can't stand, just like BOF was. Just like I think the kdrama version of Itzura na Kiss/It Started With A Kiss will be. So while I'm excited, I will kind of tread these waters with caution, because even if it has an amazing cast (which I don't think BOF had, at all) there are so many things that could still put me off...
@ 8 sorrowmask, skip beat would make such a good drama. i know that there was going to be a taiwanese version of it (called extravagant challenge, i think, with Ariel Lin and Jerry Yan) but it was 'indefinitely postponed' D;

I'm torn...I would definitely watch it if Gong Yoo is in it....but I disliked the manga passionately (but I was never a Yuu Watase fan...I think the only manga series I actually finished of hers was Imadoki). I watched the jdorama because I liked Mizushima Hiro in Hana Kimi and have to say it wasn't that exciting. I think it was partly the main actress and partly the character's fault that the drama felt flat for me and really wasn't a fan of the premise either. But seriously even though I didn't like the jdorama or the manga, I would at least give this a try if Gong Yoo acts in it. Or even Kim Kang-woo (I'm really curious to watch see him outside the character of Chae Dong-woo)

Very mixed reaction to Absolute Boyfriend from what I read on previous posts. I loved Absolute Boyfriend and Hayami Mokomichi was perfect as the robot. Since I never read the manga, I just enjoyed the jdrama on its own merits and anxiously waited for each new episode to come out.

ahh...I loved Zettai Kareshi (strictly the jdrama), imo it's a very successful 'reinvention' of the cliches. the manga was too shoujo when I read it, and my ahjumma brain just cant make sense of anything done by Yuu Watase.
I'm a bit bewildered with her choice though, the 'heroine' in this requires couple short fuses and the plot will only make her look downright insanely cuckoo to get into the whole roboto bf situation in her 30s....unless they are super liberal with rewriting everything.
Hayami Mokomichi had his role of his career, you do need an actor who is first possessing enough acting chops AND the woodsy flawless look. That basically rules out SSH (though I agree he absolutely looked the part and will match well age-wise)
To be very honest, I'm not looking forward to this unless there's a miracle in the male casting. Of all the suggestions, I like KDW the best...but I doubt he'll do a drama...

I'm not into Absolute Boyfriend/zettai Kareshi. The manga was too boring and the manga characters too uninteresting. I started the j-drama, but it didn't draw me either. I do like how the korean remake will have the characters be older, but i think 16 episodes is too much. The story would be better off as a movie.
