Hon drama production press conference

Not that this is unusual for a kdrama, but I’ll say it again: This is one good-looking cast.

On August 3, the cast of MBC’s Hon gathered at the Ilsan MBC Dream Center for the drama’s production press conference. And while the drama’s two marquee names are Lee Seo-jin (Yi San) and ex-FinKL member Lee Jin (Hometown of Legends), a lot of attention was paid to the drama’s new face, Im Joo-eun, who was selected after an audition process that beat out more than a thousand competitors. Something tells me that whether or not Hon does well, she will be the buzz name the comes out of the project.

Plus, if you’re like me, perhaps your interest level in the supernatural thriller was on low until the recent announcement that the drama drew a 19-and-up age rating, which suddenly made it seem a lot more interesting.

Lee Seo-jin with Im Joo-eun

The director, PD Kim Sang-ho, praised Im for her outstanding ability to concentrate, which was so notable that he said, “Sometimes while filming it was like her spirit left her, as though she couldn’t hear me. She had to focus on bringing out her emotions.” He explained choosing Im Joo-eun because she was the candidate who most closely met the criteria: she has a fresh face, appealing eyes, and acting ability.

Lee Seo-jin said of his co-star, who is 15 years younger, “Of course I felt a generation gap. But I’m trying, and even watching shows like music programs, which I’d never watched before.” As a result of being twice as old as the younger crew, 36-year-old Lee said, “That’s why I was able to become friendlier with Lee Jin, who’s in her thirties.” (Ji-yeon is 16, while Park Gun-il and Im Joo-eun are both 21. Lee Jin is technically 29, but that makes her 30 by Korean count.)

Meanwhile, Im said of working with her veteran partner, “When we first began shooting, I was very nervous and made a lot of NG scenes, but sunbae-nim [Lee] advised me on each part, and put me at ease. Now I feel comfortable about the scenes we do together.”

Hon premieres this Wednesday, August 5.

Lee Seo-jin plays the main character, a criminal psychologist:

Newcomer Im Joo-eun plays the older twin to Ji-yeon, who is a member of the girl group T-ara. I don’t know much about them and don’t really care for that kind of music, but Ji-yeon looks very cute:

Following last year’s Hometown of Legends, Lee Jin takes on another summer horror series:

Park Gun-il may be showing off some dubious fashion sense (as you can see in the full-length shot), but I think the unflattering outfit hides how cute he is; there’s something very appealing about his air, I think…

You know how there's a cute teddy bear that grabs onto balloons in the beginning of some dramas, and the balloons have a number 15 on it, representing the age under which, people shouldn't be watching?

Not having seen a 19+ rating (for violence!!) before, I wonder whether, instead of a cute teddy bear with balloons, there will be a raging grizzly bear with huge fangs and blood red eyes, snarling at the screen... rawrr! don't watch if under 19+!!!!!!!

Another thing that will be interesting will be the commercials that surround the broadcast. Commercials are generally geared toward the audience that watches the shows, demographically speaking, and that's why you get a lot of pop-tart / cookie ads for afternoon cartoons, and car commercials for prime time shows, feminine hygeine products for soaps, etc. But this is a 19+ audience who likes to be scared... I wonder what kind of commercials they will show around the show? Who do they think will be the target audience?

@Samsooki: I think the production is trying to decrease the rating to be 15+ so i think they may delete many parts =p

--------------

This look very interesting and the new girl just grabbed my attention, i'm excited for this drama!!
To be honest, i've been feeling tired of k-dramas these few years, none really made me feel interested from the start till the end. It's usually good in the beginning and starts to drag in the later part.
Hopefully this won't be disappoint. I'm trying to keep my expectations low.

I had expectations for Triple but even though it's just like what i expected, there's many characterization flaws which i find hard to accept.... It became good in the last few episode though..

Sigh........

Why isn't there any good dramas recently?

The first thing that struck me was the HUGE dimple that Lee Seo-jin has. So cute! Too cute.

@Samsooki .....hehe wonder what balloons get 'fired out' for a 19+ ?

"Why isn’t there any good dramas recently?"

Well, this is off-topic but relevant with respect to dramas and to even this drama Hon... But "good drama" determination sort of depends on what you like?

For me, Partner has started a little slow but then turned into a "wow, I gotta watch the next episode" kind of drama (albeit after about 11 episodes, LOL). Friend, Our Legend has also picked up the pace after a difficult to understand start. A lot of people seem to like Man Who Can't Get Married, and of course, Sons of a Sol Pharmacy is a fan favorite. Then there's the just-started Dream which seems pretty decent from a character standpoint (noting that nigh impossible to determine from the first few episodes it will be good based on 2 episodes), and Style, which just came out too, but with really high tv ratings...

And as for drama standouts that already came and went in 2009:

1. Story of a Man (check JB's brilliant recaps and eye-popping 10/10 rating)
2. City Hall (maybe my favorite fairytale romantic drama comedy ever)
3. Brilliant Legacy / Shining Inheritance (another standout drama)
4. Return of Iljimae (check JB's reviews and recaps)
5. even Boys Before Flowers, while it may not have been the best drama ever, was certainly fun for a lot of people, had its mania fans.

And aside from that, if you haven't seen a drama, it can be "new to you" and I'm not sure what you've seen, but I am guessing that you should be able to find something good that you've not seen before...?

Hehe I love Park Gun-Il's fashion sense. Any man who wears boots and layers is somehow awesome in my eyes. Definitely want to watch this though, looks so exciting!

@Samsooki: ok wow. I had no idea that those cute little teddy bear things were for the rating *facepalm*

I am also enjoying Partner. It has its flaws but the acting is pretty good. Everyone is getting excited about City Hall. I might have to check that one out.

I started Dream the other night and it put me to sleep. I really hate that. I must confess that I'm just watching it for Kim Bum but it seriously needs to get better than that for me to endure it.

This is a good looking cast. Might have to check this one out.

"Friend, Our Legend" also has a 19+ ratings - I haven't seen any of the episodes yet (only downloaded them), but it has "19" instead of the usual "15" stuck up in the upper right corner of the first frame.

Is it good, Samsooki, or are you watching just because of Binnie? ^_^

@7, Artemis -

Friend, Our Legend, is almost like a period-piece, and everything has to be taken within the context of where the drama is taking place, the year, and the history of both Busan, and Korea in general.

I think the story is very interesting. Binnie is totally not Binnie, and so there is none of the "ooh, let's see what Binnie is doing and wearing and saying" in this drama. Hard to say exactly how I feel. Give me a few more days and I'll be able to give you a better answer?

Meh, honestly I am not too interested in this type of drama. I've never been impressed with Lee Seo-jin and Im Joo-eun, I really dont like the aura that she gives out.

@ Samsooki,

Perhaps...the [seemingly flatulent] bear will be replaced by a blood-thirsty tiger or white gown-wearing ghost with long hair covering her face. ;)

haha the convo here is rather entertaining, lol.
sorry burst your balloons but we won't be seeing any cute cuddly bears since that's specific to SBS and Hon is an MBC drama.

@ hjkomo - *waves* long time no see in the OT I think?

I thought the same thing about the cute bear - being a 'seemingly flatulent' bear!!! hehehe I had no idea what the bears purpose was, until Samsooki clarified it for me. For a 'ratings classification' bear to have such...interesting...body manners...those in charge in SBS have a wicked sense of humor :)

@13 peden
I second Samsooki's "awww"! What mascot does MBC use?

i think MBC is just a picture of the main cast with an orange or white background.
nothing cute or fancy.

I think I've acquired a taste for 19+ kdrama now, I can have a better hit rate to my liking with them, and whenever I saw LSJ, 'handsome frankenstein' comes to my mind. I may check this out.

Friend...I think I (and Bradamante :) ) are the only 2 that are seriously following. It's a fine, well written script, a good old angsty drama and the whole cast is doing a great job...but it can't be any further fr enjoyable. And the thing is, it is not exactly a full blown melo so you can cry your hearts out and get some relief. It's not for leisure watching, the subtle style in which PD Kwak handles his material nrequire us to invest a bit more time and effort to get it.

So 15 means the age rating? Thanks Samsooki.

I'm curious about this. There are commercial breaks in Kdramas? I watched the first episode of Boys Before Flowers and I noticed the time that comes out at the lower part so I thought there are no commercial breaks for Kdramas.

@bspanda: I watched it just recently since many people recommend and raved about it. To be honest, i wasn't expecting much but it was a decent one but not entertaining enough to be really good. Maybe Kim Sun Ah is just not my type but i think the lead guy is pretty charismatic.
@ Samsooki: I've been doubtful about story of a man, because even though jb recapped and gave it a high rating but i don't think i'll fall in love with it since i actually finished the recap first before watching it so yeah... i can't really say anything about it aside from PYH and the villain guy looking cool.

I've seen some pretty decent dramas such as city hall even though KSA is not my cup of tea, entertaining but highly flawed dramas such as BOF and Brilliant legacy (i know many people says it's very good but for me, it's extremely cliched and dense at some point but entertaining), Cinderella stories are cliched but still entertaining in some ways.

I got a different perspective about partner from you.
I think partner got a pretty good start and i fell in love with the cases and the cast.
If the drama continues being good, it may be in my good drama list of 2009. haha.

When i'm asking "why isn't there any good drama recently", i'm actually referring to those who are SO good that it can be on my top list. I feel like old kdramas are better than those right now. Maybe k-dramas lost it freshness.

I'm an anti- sageuk so even though it may be a very very good sageuk, it's hard to get into me =p.

I know i'm picky... maybe as i watch more kdramas, i'm expecting more and more and newer stuffs.

I think those in my top list are cliched but not that cliched in those days where cinderella stories just started to boom.

I'm quite an old kdrama lover, it became a part of my lifestyle.

Just like towards kpop, i'm getting sick and tired of them and leaning towards k-indie, maybe it's just my taste is becoming different as i grow older.

i hope that they keep all those provocative parts so boost up their artistic merit. i mean, filming and storytelling should always strive to reach new heights.

if they keep all the 19+ stuff, i might actually watch something scary for once, just to see how scary and possibly exciting it can be. if it does go for the 19+, i hope this will be a cult hit.

can't waiiiiiiiiit!
