Just Looking at That Fool

Just Looking [그저 바라보다가] is the new name for the drama formerly called Six Months, and while I think the title change — especially so late in the game — was unnecessary, the new title has the added bonus of being shortened to “그바보,” which means “That Fool.” And, judging from these new promo posters, that’s no coincidence.

What looks promising is not only Hwang Jung-min as that fool — he has a great range of goofy comic expressions — but that Kim Ah-joong is a pretty good comic actress as well, and it’s my hope that she plays her movie-star character with a fun, quirky vibe — rather than, say, Choi Ji-woo’s glamour queen in A Star’s Lover, which was appropriate for Choi there, but not all that funny. And this drama is obviously going for the funny.

The drama is written by sitcom writer Jung Jin-young and Kim Eui-chan and directed by Goodbye Solo‘s PD Kim Min-soo. KBS will premiere the new drama next Wednesday, April 29, which will also see the premiere of SBS’s City Hall.

With MBC’s just-aired Cinderella Man boring me and City Hall never quite doing it for me in the first place, I have the most hopes that Just Looking will pull out a winner.

That doesn't look like KAJ in the first poster for some reason. But then again, it looks extremely photoshopped that her body doesn't even look naturally proportional, so maybe that's why.

Name change is good.

Hwang Jung-min, he's from that movie A Man Called Superman, right? If so, he impressed me there so I hope he's good in this also.

Kim Ah Jong, hmmm. I have a feeling she will play this as the typical k-drama heroine which would be disappointing. If she adds flavor to the role, that is what would make this different from all the other ones with this storyline. Otherwise, I'm just watching another Full House/love contract drama.

So, in other words, I think KAJ will be the one to make or break this.

@ 14 ...way to say it in the rude way. I gotta admit I am not yet interested in this drama due to the male lead. But I'll give it a go for KAJ , and if Java finds it to be a winner then I am definately keepin on it !

I hope the comedy makes up for the lack of handsome man!

I agree javabeans.

There are many actors that I wasn't a big fan of but after watching the show and realizing their acting ability, I became totally enamored. (You know what's worse? A really hot guy who's a bad actor. I'm talking to you Daniel Henney. You'd be much much much more charming if you could actually act!)

I have to say, when I first started watching Asian dramas, I didn't think I would continue because I honestly never found Asian men to be that attractive (even though I'm Asian myself, yes, I know). However, after I got involved in the story, I realized I fell for the character sometimes and not just the actor. You start not looking at the actual features or outside appearance.

(IE, the main guy from Hello! Miss. I didn't find him very attractive. The character? HELLA attractive.)

For some reason, That fool gives me Who are you? vibes. And I don't know if that's a good or bad thing. I mean, Who are you? was surprisingly good imho so I'm afraid of having high hopes for this new drama. Heh

@Javabeans
Oh you beat me to it!

really gorgeous illustration in 2nd poster! seen some similar Japan stage play designs - upscale, frothy fun.
LOL ditto @ lee evans comparison. HJM just drips with talent and passion, though ever since Superman his can-do comedy spirit has been verging on "uncle tom" type of tomfoolery for me. was surprised he & kim ah-joong belong to same agency...was casting a packaged deal??
hmm as for looks, HJM was a dashing "bad boy" in "Happiness" movie with Im soo-jung. check it out for some HJM eye-candy lol.

Sorry if I'm going off-topic a bit and if I'm asking a too personal question, but now that you have exposure to Asian media do you still feel that way? And if you no longer do, would you say that it's because you started to watch Asian dramas and that's what changed your opinion?

I'm a 1.5 gen---but I guess most Asian Americans would call me a FOB :) --- so these types of AA identity issues intrigue me.

Back on topic, I'm also saddened when people complain about a great actor not being good-looking enough.

And personally I think Hwang Jung-min looks great!

Can't wait for this series ^_^

I would say HJM looks "accessible" and "datable" if not necessarily smoking hot. Because being hot doesn't actually mean you 'want' them. Honestly, I look at Daniel Henney and as pretty as he is I feel as though he is dripping arrogance and even if he is NOT arrogant, he seems very much like a "white couch" to me (you know, white couches are gorgeous on display but for every day use its too difficult to keep clean and all in all impractical.

I suppose it all depends on what you equate to as "good looking" .... friendly and datable or arm-candy~

Good looks are a dime a dozen, but Hwang Jung-min is adorable and he can ACT. I think he looks great, too.

From what I've seen so far, I can't help but think her character is going to be the "diva/bitch" type who put on an innocent act in front of the camera. She's probably going to be somewhat cold and bitchy, but eventually warms up to "that fool". It sounds way too cliche though. I hope I'm wrong.

But people don't watch K-dramas for the acting! Well, not shallow people like me anyway :P

No, for me it's situational. If it's a serious, complicated and deep drama like Resurrection then there's no need for eye-candy. But if it's a romcom or silly teeny-bopper drama then I need, not want, need a good looking actress to keep my interest. Would I have enjoyed Full House without Song Hye Kyo?

But back to "Just Looking":

Still not interested since it's so typical and have never been a fan of KAJ (even though I enjoyed 200lbs), but I'll probably still check it out since I'm getting kinda desparate for a good romcom.

@24: Sorry but I am watching K-drama for the acting. After all, no matter how good a script or a storyline is, if the actors/actresses can't deliver it to the viewers then that project is already a failure. Yes, serious drama need actors/actresses that can act but "silly teeny bopper drama" or so it was call, need casts who can act as well. If not then why would the director even bother to make it. Eye-candy can only carry one's interest so far, maybe 1 or 2 episodes for me but still not enough to make me watch the entire drama.

I agree with javabeans that seeing comments about a fabulous actor being not good looking enough is very, very saddening. KJM might not be the best looking guy out there but he certainly has his charm. If you don't believe me just watch his previous works + the family outing episodes that he appeared on and you'll know it.

Where would we be if actors gave up because they were told they weren't good-looking enough (ex. Kim Myung Min)?

The name change and comedic direction sound appealing. Hope this one is a winner.

TBH, at first I was kinda ehhhh, actor doesn't look too hot. But that's a first impression and I always find photographs to very easily be unreliable. Some people hit you straight away with their charisma when you see them in motion. You can buy looks, but not personality or talent. People don't have to be beautiful to be valuable or lovely~ it's nice to see a change from the drama/movie ideology that only pretty people get to fall in love. Yenniway.

@ mishane - ZOMG, Lee Ji Hoon? I love him!! He's adorable, I spent the whole rubbishy drama wanting to hug the life out of him. <3

I would have to say that, after being exposed to Asian media, I don't feel the same way. I do find Asian men attractive now.

I grew up in the States, the only asian I knew was my mom. I didn't have asian friends, I didn't really know any asian people. So, why would I be attracted to it when I wasn't surrounded by it, you know?

I definitely think that Asian dramas changed my opinion. That's what really exposed me to it in the first place. Now when I'm in NY, or on the subway, a Korean or Japanese guy will catch my eye, when before, they wouldn't register. So yeah, Asian dramas did have a lot to do with that.

Javabeans, I'm curious as to how the leads will pull this off—their chemistry most especially. Yes, Hwang Jung-min is not particularly attractive, but guess what? I didn't like Joo Ji-hoon's looks at first (when I saw him in Princess Hours/Goong) and was like, "Yeah, ok, he's the Crown Prince but so what?" but now he's considered one of Korea's best-looking! And his appeal grew when he starred in The Devil and Antique Bakery. I still don't find him hot but he's all right with me now, since he's a good actor.

Well, what I'm really saying is: if the plot is good, and the directing is good, and the actors are REALLY good and have AMAZING chemistry together, then I will like this drama. I mean, the F4 in J-HYD weren't good-looking but they showed their appeal over time. And I stuck with that show because of the plot and overall production.

me too java beans i am so sad why people always said this man not handsome. so what with Goodlooking. he is such a versatile actor. i am his Fan , so that why he was casted because his ability in acting not his Face.

Anyway only a few korean Handsome actor who can act. and Got Awards !!.. i can count it by my hand . anyway talking about actor ability you can't consider into personal view like us as amateur ( talking about someone's acting ) would be ignored. Read From movie criticizer than you should believe he can act.

Hwang Jung Min ~ believe me you will love him !!.. he always be awesome anywhere he played

pish, good looking actors are a dime a dozen, but talented ones are far and few between. Besides, I need "ordinary" ones so ordinary people like me can relate.
