As far as "good looks" go, it just varies for me with no real rhyme or reason. Some people appeal to me on a physical level and some on an emotional one. I also have a tendency to dislike people based purely on their hair cuts.

I am still surprised at how high the level of discourse can get on dramabeans.

How many threads that start with a multiparty auction for YKS timeshare can take a warming turn in a lexicographical wading pool with "tickle the cockles of every girl’s heart" (I had to look up the word "cockles"! oh fie my education...) followed by a refreshing plunge into an icy parody so real, I'd rather live in Belleza's world than my own... buy the book and get the DVD? Only $19.95 plus s/h? (How did Belleza figure out that every korean guy's safety word is "oppa"? Which traitorous dog gave up the secret??)

I realized late last night that many of dramabeans denizens are far more sophisticated in k-drama watching than myself. I was discouraged by this fact, since it means I can't add to the discussion so much as I can muddle it down. But then I thought, maybe that's okay. Everyone gets to be a flighty 16 year old once (or twice) right?

I absolutely revel in my ignorant newb-ness, not weighed down by the weight of knowledge or burdened by complex analysis. I boast a purity and a naivete that allows me to take joy in every tear-laden vacant stare by Korean starlets who merely annoy more seasoned watchers, and my heart pounds with every wrist-grab by Hyun Bins et al. Alas, you have been there and done that. All for me, then.

And while my eyes used to only see Banana Republic, JCrew and Brooks Brothers, if now I stray to Dirk Lui ala YesStyle.com, is this not progress of the mind? I may not get to where you are, but I'll have fun getting there. :) To be continued on an open thread?

Oh you're SO not alone (I feel the same way) and pfft, you can never muddle the discussion down! Personally, I watch dramas as a "fangirl at heart" in that I cheer or get sad for the characters...I really don't want to think too much while I watch kdramas (it'd be safe to say I take them as mindless entertainment...for the most part). Of course when the ep's done or I've finished a series and think back to the whole thing I may have deeper thoughts, esp if I stop by here and read dramabean's and dramabean's readers' comments, but I usually pretty much go with the flow. LOL

Oh OMG so it's not only me then?!? \o/ I used to have 3 great pet peeves: the grab-wrist-and-drag thing, the piggyback rides and the front-to-back hugs. I was like, why do you guys always use these gestures to display your looove? I was a little frustrated! These days? I cannot wait for these little moments! *facepalm*

I'm actually with Sere on this issue. The truth is, I don't necessarily like terminal illness plots, but I do like to cry. So naturally I like watching melodramas, and I tend to my own meaning with the ones I like, even with the story is kinda wacky. But mostly I cry. I like almost every show I watch. I get more from people loving their shows than snarking on others, and even though I joke about it, I really do love the show. And that's what I want to share. Conversation is just conversation to me.

So, for example, Samsooki found meaning in Sung Yu Ri's performance in Snow Queen. I myself loved Binnie's tortured soul in Snow Queen. That's the most important thing, to find connection. Even if you're watching a "great" show, but you're not deriving some kind of meaning or emotional connection or something with it, then it's not going to stay with you, and you're not going to want to share that experience with other people. Because the show didn't matter to you.

I tried the Hyun Bin wrist-grab with my wife at a korean grocery store this past weekend, and I missed and ran into her and we ended up on the ground cackling like hyenas. I couldn't do it properly because I was already snickering as I was imagining what it looked like before I actually did it, and I mis-timed by grab and ending up stumbling into her like a drunk. I'm a terrible actor.

For the future:

1. Normally when a person is walking, their hands swing a little bit. You could be grabbing air if you don't time it. A better approach is the Temptation of Wife - Gu Eun Jae technique of grabbing arm ABOVE the elbow and whirling the person.

2. You have to maintain a serious face through-out, otherwise people watching will know you are screwing around. To make a scene, you have to practice and not laugh. Acting is hard! I take back what I said about Dennis Oh.

We can joke around about this, but the addition of "oppa" to dialogue with a korean guy means a whole lot. even if we know we are being suckered a little bit.

I know that it is a difficult thing to say to a guy because it denotes (and connotes) a closeness and a familial-like relationship, but even as meaningful as it is to a girl to say it to a guy, it means much more to the guy. To a guy, in addition to the special relationship implications, etc., there is a general implication that is just as important - it means that you are a guy that has value in his existence. It justifies our right to exist, in an existential way. If we are down and out, if we have nothing else, if someone calls us "oppa" it means we deserve to be alive, and there is no substitute for that.

So don't abuse the power! With great power comes great responsibility!

Oh I agree . . . and that's kinda why I sell MiSa so hard on ya! When I saw it's one of the ultimate "it's hard to be Korean" shows, what I mean is it's that show that expresses all these moires about being a Korean man against such a brutal situation. The loneliness, the pride, the unyielding will against terrible odds. The show is Lee Kyung Hee's impassioned love letter to the Korean Man.

Thing is, even if I like seeing it on screen, I don't know how I'd take it if [imaginary *sighs*] boyfriend/hubby were to do that to me. *ponders* I really don't know. My cultural background tells me I should be a)outraged, b)enraged, c)running away in the opposite direction, screaming. On the other hand, guh! If it was done in jest, like you did, I'd probably laugh (and probably everybody around me would think I'm crazy and the hubby is a violent possessive jerk: they might not get the inside joke and if they do get it's a joke, they might think it's not funny at all). Anyone noticed a decline in the use of the word "Oppa" in K-dramas over the past few years? I remember when I first got into the scene with dramas such as Autumn Tale and Stairway to Heaven using the word Oppa liberally. I really miss those days....

It would be greatly appreciated if anyone can point me out some modern dramas with a high Oppa word count. I mean, who can resist a cute Korean actress doing the Oppa wiggle along with pouty expression? I would do anything for that :)

It has a 100% success rate. Well, actually, let me correct myself. It works on multiple oppas at once as well, so really, the average success rate is well over 100%.

Aside from daily dramas, I think that kind of drama has mostly died out. Even in East of Eden, Grace called Lee Dong Chul "ajushhi, beggar ajusshi." I'm sure that helped their relationship. ;) The Japanese term for it is "junai" or "pure love", and for the most part, junai's kinda fallen out of fashion.

Come to think of it, You Are My Destiny makes a great cautionary tale about "oppa." There's a subplot where the spoiled daughter (Kang Yu Ri) basically get her guy to do some really, really stupid stuff. Like fake-pregnancy-to-the-altar kind of stupid. As you're watching this, you feel bad for the actor Lee Ji Hoon, because the ONLY reason why his character follows along is due to her constant delivery of oppa!oppa!oppa!oppa! (In the script, half of her lines literally are "oppa!! *make pouting face*") His character is truly a sucker with no self-esteem.

In Women in the Sun, there's a very sweet romance between Lee Ha Na and Han Jae Suk. And that would fit the classic "oppa"/"innocent love" vibe. Actually I think you'll like that show.

Oh, you might want to give One Fine Day a shot. I think the beginning of episode 4 or 5, where Sung Yu Ri discovers that Gong Yoo, her long lost oppa, has returned, will make you pull for the hankies. (It uhhh did for me. I'm really weak. :D )

That is so funny because I used to play Mortal Kombat as a kid (I still know how to do Subzero's moves!), and the Oppa/Wiggle/Pout combo is exactly like an MK fatality move, because once someone does it on you, you're toast!

Actually, if you can find it, you may want to check out the 1999 drama "Happy Together" (the one with Lee Byung Hun, Song Seung Heon, Kim Ha Neul, Jeon Ji Hyun, Chae Tae Hyun, Han Go Eun, Jo Jae Hyun, and Kang Seon Yeon . . . beat that Iris!! ;) ) On paper, it's a family drama where a (very goofy) Lee Byung Hung tries to find and reconnect with his struggling family.

In reality, it's a big face-off between Lee Byung Hung and Song Seung Heon regarding who is the better oppa. LBH plays Goofy Oppa. SSH plays Strict Oppa. Jo Jae Hyun plays Pimp Oppa. And Chae Tae Hyun plays Wannabe Oppa. Basically the whole show is one continuous oppagasm.

yah!!! i agree to javabeans if you watch WHO ARE YOU you can feel the drama that so much fun that everything in the sequence of the episode that you would watch it could relieved all your stress (grr!!!).
