Shin Mina and Gong Hyo-jin are Sisters on the Road
by javabeans
Gong Hyo-jin and Shin Mina are teaming up as half-sisters in the upcoming film Sisters on the Road [지금, 이대로가 좋아요]. This could be interesting, as both ladies are among their generation’s more visible rising actresses (and fashionistas), having worked steadily and increased their profiles over the past several years in projects like Crush and Blush and The Naked Kitchen.
In the film, the two share the same mother, but because they have different fathers, the sisters have never cultivated a close bond. However, when their mother suddenly dies, they set off on a trip to locate the younger one’s (Shin) father, encountering unexpected obstacles, accidents, and the revelation of startling family histories as they unravel what it means to be family, and sisters.
(The English title is given as Sisters on the Road, but the literal Korean translation means “I like how things are here, now.”)
Director Bu Ji-young (center) with actresses Gong Hyo-jin and Shin Mina
Gong Hyo-jin plays the easygoing older sister who inherits their mother’s fish shop and cares for the house in their Jeju Island hometown. Meanwhile, Shin Mina’s character is the intelligent but more sensitive, prickly career-woman sister; she struck out on her own and has been independent ever since her university days, and now works in a corporate job in Seoul.
The film comes from director Bu Ji-young, who also wrote her 2003 film Untold Scandal [스캔들 – 조선남녀상열지사]. She also won a special award at Daegu International Short Film Festival for her 2002 short, A Drop of Clear Salty Liquid [눈물, aka Tears].
Gong Hyo-jin was most recently in the film Crush and Blush [미쓰 홍당무], for which she drew in many accolades last year. Preceding that, she’d acted in action-spy comedy Dachimawa Lee [다찌마와 리] and the heartwarming 2007 MBC drama Thank You.
Meanwhile, Shin Mina’s most recent project was romance film The Naked Kitchen, in which she reteamed with her previous co-star Joo Ji-hoon (they’d first paired in the 2007 thriller drama Devil).
Sisters on the Road releases on April 23.

Confession: I have a serious weakness for movies about estranged sisters who go on a road trip together. And if it involves Gong Hyo Jin? I'm definitely SOLD.

I think Gong Hyo- Jin has an ahjumma face, but I really like her fashion sense. I don't remember much from Shin Mina except when Yoon Eun Hye beat her in a wrestling match during the XMAN days.
It looks like a good movie, can't wait to see it.

I like how they changed this up... it's usually about how the half-siblings have the same father.
I really like Gong Hyo-jin's dress in the second picture; perfect for anyone without a body of godly perfection >_<
hides the flab and all.
She ~might~ indeed look like an ahjumma, but she's an ahjumma with style!

kinda of reminds me of "In her shoes" - the story is completely different, but its about two very different sisters...ones kind of ajhumma-ish while the other is really popular and cool...it was the first thing I thought of when i heard the synopsis..nonetheless, both actresses are awesome...can't wait to check it out

"is it just me or is Gong Hyo Jin the most beautiful girl in korean movie industry? i find her to have the most interesting, and beautiful face"
Kinda ironic that you say that. When she picked up an acting award last year, she in a very emotional speech expressed how difficult it was for her to be accepted because she didn't really fit the typical "pretty" in Chungmuro.

I know you're probably just basing it off Kuki News, but Bu Ji Young didn't write Untold Scandal.

hey yoonah, thanks for the clarification. i was actually basing it off the Naver listing, http://movie.naver.com/movie/bi/pi/filmo.nhn?code=52235, which credits her as "scripter." but that term is a bit of a misnomer, so she didn't actually scriptwrite; she was something of a script assistant/consultant.

The movie's story remind me of Hollywood movie Thelma & Louise (1991) starred by Susan Sarandon & Geena Davis. Like this movie, they (SS & GD) also take a trip to find the meaning of live and becoming close friend while on the road. But not like Sisters on the road (SOTR) the characters in T&L have a sad ending (They decide to drive the car over the cliff into the canyon, an act which is guaranteed to result in both their deaths, after they got cornered by the police who's always on their tail). This movie (T&L) also marked top Hollywood actor Brad Pitt as an actor. Whereas, SOTR tell about family conflict & the unraveling of startling family histories.
I always like this kind of movie theme (SOTR and T&L) because the story is all about women (their struggle, sadness, hope, goal etc.) and especially if the movie is directed by a woman too like this one. So I very much will watch this.

Thanks for that clarification javabeans (I was kinda puzzled bec I was sure Kim Dae Woo wrote Untold Scandal). Aside from directing a couple of shorts, Bu Ji Young was also on the staff of Hong Sang Soo's Virgin Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors, so it's nice that she's finally getting her feature film directing debut. :)

Shin Mina is up there w/ a few other Korean actresses for having a great screen presence and charisma.
While she doesn't always pick roles which highlights her charisma, it totally shone thru in the film "Madeleine" (which, btw, is actually a pretty good movie).

I love these 2 ladies. Both really can act and cool. I watched so many of Shin Min Na dramas like Love to Kill, The Devil, Beautiful Days, and movies Bettersweet life, another one... she played as a blind pionist. She can really acted and she is so cute. Gong Hyo Jin, all her drama great like lets go to school with Rain, Thank You, Hello Teacher.. Gong Hyo Jin is not the prettiest but she has what it call origin Asian woman face. Hope she is not considering do make over coz she has what some Korean dont have.... Hate those plastic face. I saw promo clips for this movie like ages ago on KBS' Entertainment Weekly, now it is finally coming = )
I've heard good things about The Naked Kitchen and I'll be anticipating its release here in Singapore. Personally, I am partial towards Shin Mina, I think she is an ok actress, not great, just ok.
I've not seen any of their solo projects, except for the two projects they worked with Rain on, both of which made me bawl like a baby.
