Kim Sun-ah takes on Allure, City Hall
by javabeans
Kim Sun-ah shows her sexy side again for her latest photo shoot, this time for beauty magazine Allure. The shoot is described as “chic and modern,” though I think it’s also got a retro flapper vibe with her bobbed hairstyle.
The new look accompanies her next role; Kim’s next drama project is the upcoming City Hall [씨티홀], in which she stars as a mayor.
She says of the role, “I think the different hairstyle in playing the energetic mayor character of Shin Mi-rae was a good change that helped me find a different part of myself to show, and gave me a good feeling. I’ll do my best to suit my character and show many sides of myself.”
City Hall depicts Kim Sun-ah as a woman who worked herself up from lowly official to a mayoral position. It comes from the writer-director combo who worked on the successful SBS drama On Air, Kim Eun-sook and PD Shin Woo-chul. It co-stars Cha Seung-won (Eye for an Eye, Tooth for a Tooth), Chu Sang-mi (My Woman, Snow in August), and Lee Hyung-chul (On Air).
The drama is currently filming and will air on SBS on Wednesdays and Thursdays; it premieres mid-April and will follow the current series, Cain and Abel.
Incidentally, this puts Kim squarely opposite Kwon Sang-woo’s new MBC series, Cinderella Man, as well as a new KBS miniseries called Six Months starring movie stars Kim Ah-joong and Hwang Jung-min(!!!) which I’ll have to look up next.

first?
Anyways, this drama year looks good so far(star-wise)
Kim Ah-Joong, Kim Sun Ah, the come back of the Cain and Abel stars(their names escape me at the moment), and the drama with the veteran actors(Hateful, but Once Again); which I am an avid viewer of. Haha. ^__^;
anyways, Thanks for the update.
Sounds like an interesting storyline(hopefully~)

Don't get me wrong I love Kim Sun-Ah.
She always amuses me whatever part I seem to catch her in.
But she never looks like her photos.
I never would have thought those pics were of her if you hadn't posted that.

@ #2 Jin-Ah,
It's actually her / their (management? production?) goal. Not to look like the usual Kim Sun Ah... or rather Kim Sam Soon... Based on the Allure article she is shedding off the Kim Sam Soon character from her image. Something that has been attached to her since MNIKSS days... (I've read another recent article as well that even called it "Samsoonie Jinx" - which makes me feel bad / sad in a way because I soo love Samsoonie...)

I'm so glad for her. She looked like she had lost 20 lbs from the time when she filmed It Happened One Night. She's a beautiful woman, not that she's not beautiful when she's a heavier woman, but she can play more dynamic role when she looses a little weight. Kudos for her to loose that weight. I can imagine how difficult that must have been. I can't wait to see her in the role of the mayor.

Worth reiterating that Sassy/Sexy Sun Ah came before Funny Sun Ah. She's made a career of balancing those two sides and being totally real.
A KSA/So Ji Sup reunion is one of my dream matchups. Comedy, non-comedy, whatever. I think it would be awesome!

@belleza: About WBC.. I hear people saying that the loss of Korean team might have been a strategic one. Well, they didn't have to lose 6-2. What was tragic was what happened to YK Lee though. I'm 99% sure the damn pitcher did that on purpose following his team players' instruction or whatever. He might have been hit right in the middle of his face if he didn't turn his head.
And Hwang Jung-min in a drama, huh? He should definitely get some skin care before start filming so he won't have to wear yucky heavy makeup. Other than that, I'm excited! He's been phenomenal in movies and I really want to see how he does in a drama setting.

I wish Kim Sunah the best, obviously, and I root for her whatever she does. But I am also a bit sad, I am not sure exactly why. I think that there are inherent conflicts in all actors that they have to deal with - some things that are so hard to understand and resolve. And this is true for fans as well.
1. When an actor/actress plays an iconic role, a ground-breaking role, a role for the people, then that person is forever locked in time from the audience's perspective. For example, MNIKSS was my first k-drama (well, not my first, but now I can barely remember anything before it). Kim Sunah's performance was so special, so different and yet so strong and close to my heart. How can I let her go to play other roles?
On the flip-side, from the actor's perspective, when you put your whole heart into your work, you cannot help but leave a part of you in that role, forever. When YEH finished Coffee Prince, she couldn't stop crying even though the other actors were trying to comfort her. She was crying and saying something like, "what can I do now, what can I do now..." Kim Sunah said something similar as well in an interview about a year after MNIKSS, also noting that she couldn't watch MNIKSS even then, a year later, because it was too hard to for her.
And yet, time moves on. Kim Sunah is NOT Kim Samsoon, Kim Sunah is Kim Sunah. For people who are stuck in the MNIKSS world, or in any k-drama world, the identity conflict can be so strong it can drive actors (and fans) crazy.
2. Part of the reason why her performance in MNIKSS was so good was because she had a fire inside of her that was much like the character she was playing (also noted by her in an interview - my translation back to English is kind of loose - my apologies).
That part of her is inherent within her. It's part of what makes her different and special from all other Korean actresses. But how can she channel that into a completely different character, a completely different universe and world. Can she really transform herself and use her essence in a different way?
Would that make her a completely different person (on the inside)? Would this conflict create a silent and unspoken hypocrisy that she has to deal with later on?
And are these changes, these transformations, are these changes cumulative? I mean, when she changes again for another role, and pours her heart into another role, will she be damaging who she is on the inside again? Will she even recognize herself later?
***
Tough questions. I just root for Kim Sunah, though.
Whatever she does, I hope she succeeds and is happy.

@28,
Kim Ah-Joong is a rising popular actress and singer.
If you go on youtube, you can find her songs from her movie and clips of her in other things. She is probably best known for her star role in 200 lb Beauty.
People tend to focus on some negative things about her, but you should see her work and then decide for yourself. As for me, I like her movie, I like her songs, and I wish all the best for her.

"On the flip-side, from the actor’s perspective, when you put your whole heart into your work, you cannot help but leave a part of you in that role, forever."
Samsooki, this sentence explain why some actor/actress take a long break after the drama is done (like what KSA & YEH have done after finishing their succesfull dramas, which unfortunately always been asking/blow up by the media or their fans). It seem that they won't/have difficulty to separate from their character after they put their heart into the role, and that's what a serious actor always do.
I hope KSA does the same thing to this drama like what she did in MNIKSS, blend into the character.

Sun Ah's situation was much different though. She signed up to do Seven Days, which became a messy, messy entanglement . If she hadn't gone out to do Seven Days, she'd probably have followed up with another drama sometime in 2006.

Wow! She looks good. That's if it wasn't photoshop. I can't wait for City Hall! I like her in all her movies and dramas. I think sometimes people give her too much or not enough credit on her acting. I like that she really comes out well on screen. Someone who can be looked at and not get sick of it.
Wish her all the best!
