Get ready to say bye to Eric
by javabeans
Shinhwa rapper and actor Eric (Que Sera Sera, Strongest Chil Woo) is headed off to do his military duty tomorrow! (Or today, in Korea — October 9 being the big day.)
Although we’ve been hearing for a while about all the Shinhwa guys’ plans to enlist this year, Eric is the first to go. As you may know, Eric used to live in the United States, attending high school (I believe) in Santa Monica. As Shinhwa took off in the late 1990s and his career along with it, Eric gave up his U.S. citizenship, which makes him subject to mandatory Korean military enlistment.
However, given an injury sustained on the set of MBC’s drama Wolf in 2006, Eric will be assigned to a desk job. The drama had been cancelled due to an accident in which a stunt went awry and a stunt car crashed. He injured his ankle and hip and spent a month in the hospital in recovery.
No doubt his Shinhwa brethren will be following shortly. After ten years together, what will the entertainment landscape be without the Shinhwa boys? Er, men? Er, man-boys?

Actually Eric attended Sunny Hills. He was a classmate of mine. Very popular in OKC! :D

Hm, that Santa Monica thing must be a popular misconception -- I swear i've read it a bunch of times! It must be a result of the internet version of "Telephone"... which I suppose would be The Internet.

Ready the way for the throngs of weeping fangirls! Although if most of the Shinhwa guys end up enlisting around the same time, I will miss seeing them on variety shows.

I think back when K-pop was starting to really happen, they would recruit from the same places (Fullerton, Ceritos, Diamond Bar, Santa Monica, etc.) because they all kinda knew each through Church affiliations. Eric was a total "GQ" (our label that was more or less synonymous with a preppy/well-dressed Korean oppa) back then, and was so popular with the 1st generation Korean female students, that he was voted club president of local OKC. Or so my friend says. :)

I've been wondering for the last 2 years when they would enlist. THE DAY HAS COME! I'm not rejoicing, more wondering how long they were going to stretch it out ^_~
It's so funny too hearing about le stars before they made it. I totally should have pimped my little brother out. When he went to Korea a few years back, girls kept taking his picture and following him around. I mean that's what matters intially, innit?

He was a classmate of yours, Belleza? Wow, did you know him personally?
Anyways, I'm sad to hear that he's leaving but they have to sooner or later. I can't wait for them to all be back on stage together once again. 4-5 years is going to be a long time but I know that the fans will wait.

Why did Eric have to give up citizenship? Are you not allowed to have dual citizenship? I think Andy gave it up as well.
Do guys like Brian and Sohn Ho Young have to enlist as well?

the santa monica thing, perhaps, you got it mixed up w/suju's kim ki buhm? 4rm what i remember, he lived there.
& yes, eric's fam still lives in the oc. their fam goes to a huge church close by my house. s'posedly, his sister got married there too. & when he's in the states, you can see him playing bball @ their courts.
but we'll know he won't be doing that for the next 2 yrs! =P

Erm, is it *bad* that I don't know who they are? I gather they're a boy-band? Pop-band?

Yeah, I'm also surprised by how many Korean celebs give us US-citizenship.
Perhaps it has to do with work visa-type issues?

I wonder if they will ever continue Wolf. It seems a shame to stop it- but it's already been like 2 years.
