Band of Brothers re-creates the Beatles
by javabeans
Um, kinda.
Cable channel Mnet premiered its new show on October 25, Band of Brothers, in which Super Junior members Kang-in and Hee-chul, and Trax boys Jay and Jung-mo, decided to come together Beatles-style.
First, they adopted the early-Beatles look with the straight-cut hair and the black suits, with Hee-chul channeling Ringo Starr behind the drums, Kang-in as Paul McCartney, Jay as John Lennon, and Jung-mo as George Harrison. (Anyone else wincing at the travesty?) As part of the project, they sang some Beatles tunes and even shot a music video.
I don’t think it’s a bad idea, but I don’t think they actually “got” what it means to become the Beatles other than dressing in a costume and singing along like a cover band. (See in the clip below. I think it’s part cute, and part cringingly embarrassing.)
Aside from the Beatles aspect, though, it’s usually a lot more fun watching these idol boys in reality projects rather than, say, performing onstage. I suppose that’s why the kpop machine is built around the cult of personality much more than musicality.

I'm cringing with you..
I like Heechul (don't really know the rest of them) and want to say something to compliment him, but this is just embarrassing. I don't know what made them go with this concept, but as a huge fan of The Beatles.. I don't really have anything positive to say.
I completely agree with you about the personality thing though.. Many times I find myself liking artists/actors for who they are rather than their skills. haha;;;

Yes, it's hard not to cringe. I'm a HUGE fan of The Beatles too, and frankly, I do not like this "imitation" of them at all. But this is only a personal opinion. Haha, I don't want to offend all the Super Junior fans out there.

it's quite watchable if seen as a reality show (boyband members put up to challenge of referencing something out of their league...) :D
the songwriting is so strong, their beauty even comes through any butchering :)

Anyone who likes the Beatles is okay in my book. The boys, themselves, were often put into the position of playing dress up and clowning through photo-ops etc. They'd probably be the first ones laughing along with the bit. Of all of the great music that Beatles made that has remained such a staple in the soundtrack of my life, I think I like the "mop top" era the best. Seeing them imitated in those suits from the black and white age brought a smile to my eyes.
As for my ears, didn't those Beatles cuts playing in the background sound great?!!

It's a valiant effort, I guess. Though a bit hard to watch. I totally want to see them do "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen. XD

You made several points that I agree with wholeheartedly. First, that they were imitating the Beatles without really understanding who they were and what they meant. I suppose it's superficially entertaining as is, but I think it would be a lot more fun and interesting if they were trying to create something that reflected the that era and music.
(I guess I should qualify this by saying that I just finished watching the season finale of Mad Men. So I could be taking this waaayy to seriously.)
Second of all, in an era where variety shows are the primary way singers communicate with their fans, K-pop absolutely has become more focused on personality than talent as a result. K-pop is fun, but it's nice to remind yourself how good music can be. That's why I was SO GLAD to hear that Clazziquai came out with a new album. What a breath of fresh air!

I was cringing too.
I really am a Super Junior fan - Heechul and Kangin, especially! But I don't think I can keep watching this show.
Jungmo & X-mas's short "Let It Be" was pretty good. But.
During the perfomance at the end I was clutching my face and grimacing. Maybe it won't be so bad once they move on to other bands. Because while I love SuJu, I WORSHIP The Beatles.

bahaha. I so agree about kpop being a cult of personality. Because I'm not gonna lie. That's the only reason I like super junior. For their personalities. Not so much for their music. It's like...yeah, they seem like theyd be cool/fun people to be around. But I'm not going to be like, getting all hardcore excited when they release a cd or anything.
