SBS’s Daemul on the skids
by javabeans
The high-profile (and high-budget) upcoming SBS drama Daemul (Big Fish), starring Go Hyun Jung and Kwon Sang Woo as a female president and a gigolo, is in danger of going bust.
The series, originally planned for the second half of this year, has halted production. It’s having difficulty coming together; because of a rift between SBS and the production company due to so-called “director replacement issues,” PD Kim Hyung Shik has stepped back, and SBS is also avoiding involvement. It’s unclear whether the series will be able to continue.
The actors (she in her follow-up to hit cop drama H.I.T., he attempting to spring back from melodrama flop Bad Love) are awaiting an official decision from the production company.
Daemul was originally a manhwa published serially in a sports newspaper by creator Park In Kwon. The drama is in the hands of Lee Kim Productions, which also produced What Happened in Bali and War of Money.

This doesn't seem like a good comeback year for Kwon Sang Woo.
Except for his CFs, of course.

Did Destiny do well in the box office? It debuted first, but it seemed to drop off quickly after. With Cain and Abel also in limbo, this has been a frustrating year for some of my favorite actors. And I think Daemul's delay was also why Iljimae got shown now rather than later this year.

dang. i hope all goes well. Kwon Sang-Woo's comeback in Bad Love was pathetic. I actually sat through that and forced myself to watch that just for KSW.

Oh-oh! Giving me goose-bumps. This is exactly how Kim Sun Ah's "Thursday's Child brouhaha" started.
All buzz and hype.
Everyone excited.
Playdate given.
Playdate moved.
Moved.
And moved again.
Production halted.
Change of director.
Having production problems.
Resume of shooting indifinite.
Eventually Kim Sun Ah was sued, production changed, changed the title, changed the casting. Turned into "Seven Days."
I hope that won't happen in DaeMul. Especially now that Go Hyun Jung fans missed her badly.

@alodia,
Weren't yakuza attached to the Thursday's Child project?
It looks like a number of SBS projects have been going through production delays this year. Cain and Abel, Gourmet, Daemul, and I think Illjimae was moved around a few times as well. It doesn't bode well for Painter in the Wind either.
I still want to see this project go through. SBS has been wanting to get Big Fish made for years, and apparently the story itself is regarded as highly as War of Money.

@belleza
really? haven't heard about that...
but i know the rumors about kim sun ah and the singer na hoo na involves yakuzas or something to that effect.
i'm not sure / haven't read that it has something to do with Thursday Child too. Kim Sun Ah doesn't talk much about the rumors, nonetheless issues with Thursday's Child. =/
