I know I´ve seen the same villa in many dramas. imagine all those people living there together like a commune. chaebols, killers, perverts, eccentrics, alien doctors…
You know you’ve seen too many dramas when you start recognizing places as much as faces. That’s been happening to me a lot lately. Just saw the house from Me Too Flower in another drama and the cafe from 1% of Anything was in We Got Married and a cafe in Let’s Eat was in, I think, Kill Me Heal Me. And that’s just what I’ve noticed this week. I think we need to get out more… At least I know I do lol.
quite honestly, editing & camera makes half of \”Circle\”. then follow writing, music, settings & acting. But mostly it is just good old clever techniques to make you see & feel what isn´t really there.
JW´s clothes´ fabric in SP makes me curious, it looks like organic cotton or maybe bamboo? They have this very natural coarse look. Does anyone know which company provided outfits 4 the drama? so eco
a few of Bong Hee´s outfits feature similar materials, but not all. she wears some really artificial-synthetic-looking clothes, too.
I am really curious to know whether the drama consciously chose some eco-friendly brand for the clothes or is it some random sponsoring? anyway, it´s cool, it looks visibly different. wouldn´t it be lovely if dramas started promoting eco-friendly and fair trade products? I am daydreaming, I know. but I wonder how aware they are about those matters…
I notice the structure of the fabric cause I am a textile artist and I am kind of obsessed with fabrics in dramas. they look un-ironed (might even be a mix of silk and bamboo or natural fiber nettle dunno – see, who else thinks about something like that LOL) and most likely handmade.
We have a lot of nettles in our garden. It is very fibrous so I can imagine it could be used for textiles. I want to try it for baskets too.
I’ll pay more attention in the next episodes.
fiber nettle is different, they are longer. They were used widely in Germany during WWII because there was an import ban and deficiency of materials. but it is also a lot warmer than cotton or linen so it has also been used for army uniforms. chinese fiber nettle is called ramye. it is one of the possibilities for eco-friendly clothes in replacement of water-consuming cotton. hard to distinguish with naked eye though.
Thanks. Cotton and linen both get crumpled. It makes sense that bamboo can be used in a fabric but I don’t think I have ever seen any to touch and compare.
I won´t bet my head on it, those are just some of my guesses based on visuals only. Unfortunately it is impossible to reach out my hand inside the drama and touch all the materials. or worse yet, pull out a fiber and do the burning test. Imagine me on drama set, pulling, crimpling, sniffing, taring, scorching…or looking underneath to see the label. now that can be all kind of misinterpreted. really, I am just trying to see if it´s natural… I MEAN THE CLOTHES!
I know that. I still lift up ceramics to check for the maker’s mark and it’s years since I worked at a museum. Now I’m doing the same thing with baskets to see what they are made of and the method used and checking in the historical dramas to see what the baskets are like! Maybe there could be an extra pause option on dramas so we can just pop in for a moment.
…and touch and poke and try things with out teeth. and then everyone would scratch their heads in the next scene why there are teeth marks on the basket.
Ran out of space below and above so continuing here! Yes. Teeth marks or maybe the items mysteriously disappeared for a day or so….for research purposes. Thanks for all the useful info. There are quite a few plants in the nettle family. I’ll look up ramye.

I’m also pretty sure they take requests to find pieces worn on dramas too. I know there are a few others that do the same but this is the one I follow.

what´s with the dog? is it a SP BTS still? There were a couple before. Is he going to get a dog for Bong Hee? looks like JCW: “Get moving, dog!” Dog: “Nah, I´m good enough like this, thnx! You gowuf.”
I think she is right tho. They have to stay on their guard, share what they know, get rid of danger first. don´t let feelings blind your reason (but I am more exited about Eun Hyuk walking together!)
I actually understand his wish to keep it supressed. I would like that too. but it looks like his good memories vanished together with the bad? this frame is like a classic space movie of the 1960ies.
I wonder if it’s a bit like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind? Because that’s what Smart Earth is feeling a bit like so far. If that is the case, it could be really interesting since that is one of my all time favorite movies. To me the idea of erasing a person from your memory is full of interesting possibilities in regard to who would do that to themselves and why, or of it is even a conscious choice.
Granted I’m about to watch ep. 5 and this could all be turned on it’s head in the next hour.
The “Smart city” part of Circle gives me slight Pilot Pirx (1978) feels, both in visual style + concept. Deals with “artificial emotions” & “eliminating negative impulses” as well, artificial humans
http://sovietmoviesonline.com/en/fantastic/231-doznanie-pilota-pirksa.html starring polish actors, filmed in Estonia, beat out Ridley Scotts´ Alien for Grand Prix in Trieste 1979. Based on short story by Stanislaw Lem the polish writer. @ 1:00:34 the robotic doctor says: “I never feel anything.” and they discuss if fear, anger etc is possible for the artificial humans.
no music in the scenes when Jin Oh and Se Joo are talking, every word becomes a bit heavier. by not adding music they made sure we really do hear all of them.
gosh, I am thinking so many things watching it. especially thinking of how similar our fate is with koreans and how our freedom fighters suffered in the 1950ies. getting upset a bit, cause the brother of my grandpa died in much the same way in the hands of KGB. it is double hard to watch 4 me

@irishrah well, yes, the fact that we DID have resistance and forest brethren-partisans holding up against the occupants till late 1970ies gives us right to say the situation was NOT chosen voluntarily nor welcomed.
I wonder if you would want to share your/granduncle’s story with the CT fan wall? There is some very interesting about discussions about such resistance and freedom movements in the last episode thread. like that of @gwenola‘s comments.
Only if you are comfortable.. don’t want to dredge up uncomfortable memories.. I really hope I’m not being insensitive X-/
just that dramabeans community gives us the opportunity to hear from ppl across the world
@irishrah yeah, well…. what do you mean “CT fan wall”? Last episode or something? to my knowledge specific drama sdont have a wall where everyone can write?
I can write but a warning: partly very gruesome.
The story is very complicated and my mom knows it better, but basically, during the 1st soviet occupation my grandpas´ big brother was drafted into Red army by force and taken to unknown direction. the family never heard of him again until 1968. My grandpa was drafted into the german army during german occupation but he and a friend of his fled the german train, became deserters and came home through the forests on foot 340km. Great-grandpa hid them in a woodshed, but a german officer came looking to buy firewood and went right into that shed. He must have seen them but turned a blind eye cause great-grandpa had lost his vision and 3 fingers by then, I guess the officer thought they need their son. if he had shot the deserters like they were supposed to, I wouldnt exist today. Nor my mom or my aunts. and then they were also forest brethren for a while. nobody found out, so … But then with the next soviet occupation my grandpa sent several letters to the NKVD (predecessor of KGB) and also tried to acquire their phone number and asked around how to reach them. I have been told he was very hot-headed and I cant tell how he survived those times. totally nuts! (I managed to inherit the hot-headedness though he died before I was born.) in 1968 they learned that the brother had been executed withing 1 month cause he refused to rape and kill elderly women in some village – dont know where, exactly, but I assume either Germany or Chechoslovakia. They never got even his body back since it was burned and left somewhere.
the resistance during Soviet occupation was very colorful and rather similar to what we see in korean dramas talking of the japanese occupation. the time period was different, but people fighting for their country had the same ideas. one of the most amusing forms was knitting and hiding national colors in patterns so that the authorities couldnt tell, or going out with a bunch of friends with one wearing something black, the other something blue and the third something white. authorities were too dumb to notice. I can write more colorful examples. you can share this story on that wall if you´d like.
Wow… so remarkable.. The older generations really had grit and nerves of steel – we really lead such easy lives thanks to them. I imagine life in places like Syria must be as bad right now and can only hope that things there get resolved soon.
Yes – I meant ep 16 comments not fan wall. What I find most touching about all these stories is how people come together during these trying times and gain strength from one another. Their resistance shows in many forms like u mentioned embroidery of national flags and these motifs in turn become their strengths and symbols of hope. Really amazing.
I´ve been thinking about the drama catnip thing and finally figured out how to put mine in one word: compassion. Villains included. Getting emotionally involved in a specific character makes me stick.
watching Eun Hyuks´ lonely birthday scene makes me sooo sad. Someone needs to wake up and go back to his friend before the killer does something awful. can we avoid that, Eun Hyuk is miserable enough?
Hahahaep 16 SP: \”Representative Byeon is rich, no need to make money:\” I´m in stitches! How is this law firm going to work! They´ll just live on his expense – and he even does the dishes! I can´t, LOL
Another great joke with him, when he said: “If I drink again I’ll be your son” and Bong Hee flat out refusing. To make it even better he tries to sell her on his good points XD
Such a funny guy and the way he goes along with everything, just kills me.
It must be code for something, hurry, figure it out!
When mine showed mostly 9’s, I took it as a message to watch Nine Times Time Travel or Plus Nine Boys. And then failed to do that, but ya know. At least I know what the aliens were trying to say.
how long do I have? my initial thought was start a revolution, cause you know “all dressed up to the nines and sixes and sevens… DONT CRY FOR ME ARGENTINA!!!!” etc and sixes and sevens means at odds, so yeah, first thought, “overthrow the government!”
7 months? 6 days? 76 seconds? Honestly, you should figure this out yourself, I’m not sure otherworldly species like it when you make use of other people to interpret their message.

That or Eun Hyuk’s successful cases. I love that they are like a family.

Another great joke with him, when he said: “If I drink again I’ll be your son” and Bong Hee flat out refusing. To make it even better he tries to sell her on his good points XD
Such a funny guy and the way he goes along with everything, just kills me.

Haa, yes, and the napping on Eun Hyuks’ shoulder which I think might have been ad-lib

I was hoping there will be a little aftercredit scene to show us which game they play and how Rep. Byeon ends up washing the dishes.

what´s up with this weird row right now. I think it is a message from outer space. six sixes and 10 – 7 – 10 – 7 and 7676…
