ABOUT JAVABEANS

I love Korean dramas and I write about ’em. (And write about ’em. And write about ’em. You may have noticed that brevity is not my friend. I want to be ITS friend, but it shuns me regularly.)

I’ve been watching Korean dramas (on and off) as long as I can remember, for almost two decades. My first Korean drama was the 1992 hit Jealousy, and I’ve been hooked ever since. Man does that make me feel old.

I started this site because I couldn’t find a site providing meaty (or any) analysis for K-dramas, a longtime guilty pleasure of mine. I enjoy marveling at the pretty as much as anyone, but also wanted to express appreciation for quality that didn’t automatically dismiss something for being popular. Or, on the flipside of that same coin, to discuss something popular that went beyond surface discussion of the plot or hot cast. (Although, let’s be honest! Hot cast = a nice bonus.)

My underlying modus operandi: Just because it’s pop culture doesn’t mean discourse has to be shallow. I’d like to sustain a fun but hopefully substantive level of conversation, mixed with some irreverence. Because it’s not worth it if it’s no fun.

I occasionally tweet (@javabeans). And even less occasionally blog (elsewhere, that is). There’s also a Dramabeans Facebook that gets ignored a lot.

ABOUT GIRLFRIDAY

I’m 50% writer, 50% couch potato. I lean left; politically, not footwise. I like to make snap judgments, then reconsider them to a pulp. I enjoy grammar, if only to break some more rules. I’m a tv junkie, a critic, a fan, but mostly importantly, I’m a writer who likes to procrastinate by watching k-dramas. The fact that I can do both now blows my mind.

I feel very strongly that people can have thoughtful discourse on just about any topic, and that art—mass, pop, high, pulp, whatever it may be—can and should be discussed intelligently for the thing it is.

Hence, I thought Dramabeans would be a good place to exercise my brain. Or was it exorcise? That would explain the confusion.

About the name: A Girl Friday could rule the world, if she really wanted to. You know her—the best friend smartypants, the plucky assistant who always knows exactly what the private eye/cop/secret agent/superhero needs? She’s cute and clever and sassy and loyal, and pretty much smarter than everyone in the room. I mean, could Jack Bauer have saved one day, let alone eight, without Chloe O’Brien?

My favorite Girl Fridays are of course ones that break the mold. Willow Rosenberg and Veronica Mars are the contemporary evolution of the classic character, and give us all hope that the geeky outcast can and will save the world.

Just think of me as Dramabeans’ girlfriday: the Miss Moneypenny to javabeans’ Bond.

I sometimes tweet things I shouldn’t. And ramble on in a blog.

I was speechless when I saw this blog/website . Why ? Because I love reading as much as I love k-dramas . And to find a blog/website that kinda fuses both of my greatest passion is 'W.O.W' *sigh* Alas ; I can't put my happiness into words . Heh . I love how you comment putting stuff like * Drink ! * and * Swoon *. Some of these made me laugh more than the drama itself. So thank you , very much . Heh . I feel that I have a bestfriend that 'gets' me and I can interact with just a simple click on the internet . Heh . Go2 Javabeans and Girlfriday ! Supporting you always I promise you that ( :

Hello, JB and GF! ^_^

This is Laya from the Philippines. I love your site! You've helped me to discover a lot of good K-dramas (and propelled me into full-blown addiction, hehe). We do get to watch K-dramas subbed in Filipino here, on free broadcast TV, after they've finished in Korea [that's how I discovered Full House, Shining Inheritance, and sageuks]. It's interesting that these dramas have generated an interest in Korean history and culture in my country... I've heard some kids discuss Baekje, Shilla and Goguryeo as they learned it from sageuks while they don't even know the different regions of their own country (facepalm!). Of course, Jumong, Jang Geum, Seon Deok, Mishil and Bidam are practically household words. "Jumong" has kind of evolved into a synonym for cool action combos among kids playing network games at internet cafes.

Anyway, Dramabeans has also cleared up for me some of the stuff that I was ignorant of in Korean culture, stuff that needed cultural backgrounders, like your definition of oppa, and the piggyback ride (which always generated huge question marks in my mind whenever I watched a K-drama). Thanks for that! ^_^

I recently noticed you mentioned that some k-drama titles match the names of their lead characters. That was when I learned that Mi-nyeo (You're Beautiful), for instance, meant "beauty" (amirite?)-- had to google that because I wasn't sure, and using Google translate when you can't understand hangul is really impossible. Anyway, so Jan-di (Boys Over Flowers) is "grass lawn" and I think I read somewhere that Bi-dam (Queen Seon Deok) is "sad story" (Bi meaning rain, right?). So I wanted to ask you if there's any chance you could elaborate more on these Korean names because they're really very beautiful and I'd like to know more what they mean.

Thanks!

hi...i'm a full time working mother with an 8-hour job that demands all my mental energy. watching asian dramas (a label i attached to korean, japanese and taiwanese drama series) since 2002 has somehow made all my end-of-working days worth anticipating with a high sense of excitement. thank you for putting up this blog because i am now updated on new dramas, their OSTs and of course, the recaps. i loved the songs, most of all, though i don't know a bit of the language. after 9 years, i have started learning about the languages, culture and traditions, and nuances of the asian culture represented by the dramas. now who wouldn't want to watch asian dramas? kudos to you and the team of recappers... God bless

Hi Javabeans, Girlfriday, and the rest of the team,
I write you today because I believe it's important to tell you how much I love your website. It's simply wonderful. I've been a silent but faithful reader of yours for a long time now.
I wanted to thank you for your hard work. You sure must spend so much time on this site, and be sure I spend a lot of my time reading you, too. I love your recaps -which are always well-written and intelligent-, love your recent podcast (your voices are cute!), love your humour and so on...You're truly amazing!
So, thank you very much....

PS: also, hum, I'm embarrassed...I'm not an english speaker (actually, I'm french), so please, forgive me for all my mistakes. Anyway, thank you again!

Love your blogs !

I have always loved the movies as a child – my maternal family used to own all the open air cinemas in Singapore/Johore eons ago. The magic, romance and thrill of those days remain with me for a long time. I guess a multiple-location career of over two decades in high powered finance with 3 global financial insitutions would have made jaded cynics out of most. But not a movie/drama buff.

I chanced upon k-drama by pure accident recently (with thanks to accompanying my 72 year old mother through a few shows- she is a huge fan). I have to say that I been pleasantly surprised by the quality and depth of some of the acting. I have always regarded the acting profession with awe. At its very best, it is an energetic means of expressing the human condition in a way that raises multiple levels of awareness in its audience. Actors ( I use this as a gender-neutral term) are channels for the crystallization of energies -largely fears and hopes – from the larger collective consciousness. Among the great actors I admire are the very perceptive, self-aware, totally human individuals who are able to transcend and transform their total being into the roles they play , thereby bringing the spotlight on nuances in the often overlooked situations and touch the souls of those watching. One reason k-drama is so popular is that many of these address issues that resonate with the larger audience in dire need of escape, hope. a healthy dosage of laughter (and sunshine!) and gentle reminders of what being human is really all about. [And of course we have writers who drive us nuts with "what were they thinking about? "( Don't even let me get started with Lovers in Paris... )]

I just want to say that your & Thundie blogs plus guest bloggers (such as samsooki) have certainly added a new rich, delicious and multiple textured dimension to the whole k-drama experience. Thank you!

Since I am the ONLY person I know in Portland, OR that is a kdrama addict I wanted to tell you how much I appreciate reading your recaps and reviews and downloading your podcasts. I heard about MLKSS from a coworker last year and was hooked within a few weeks. Alas, my friend is not addicted and has not watched any further than that series. I guess since I lived in Japan for three years, so much of the culture seems familiar, yet SO EMOTIONAL and different. I have learned so much on your website and love the SNARK and fun you put into your recaps. (Plus the music!) Also enjoy reading all the comments from your fans. Can hardly wait until BEST LOVE is available on dramafever!
Happily yours in the kdrama world-

Hi!

I'm so happy that I found your website. It is a great help for me to enjoy more Kdrama and to know more about them. Though I'm a Hungarian 17 years old girl, I'm an addict to Kdramas.
I at the first time saw the Dae Jang Geum nearly 3 years ago on our Hungarian television channel. I was hooked ever since just like you. From that on, I've already seen Queen Seon Deok, Dong Yi, Bad Guy, 49 Days, Thorn Birds, Sungkyukwan Scandal and I'm watching this time Yi San.

the question now - (DADADADUMM) - your recaps have particular attention to detail, i was wondering if you had a background in film/pop culture?
just something i've been curious about. answering optional ;P
