I love Korean dramas and I write about ’em. (And write about ’em. And write about ’em. You may have noticed that brevity is not my friend. I want to be ITS friend, but it shuns me regularly.)
I’ve been watching Korean dramas (on and off) as long as I can remember, for almost two decades. My first Korean drama was the 1992 hit Jealousy, and I’ve been hooked ever since. Man does that make me feel old.
I started this site because I couldn’t find a site providing meaty (or any) analysis for K-dramas, a longtime guilty pleasure of mine. I enjoy marveling at the pretty as much as anyone, but also wanted to express appreciation for quality that didn’t automatically dismiss something for being popular. Or, on the flipside of that same coin, to discuss something popular that went beyond surface discussion of the plot or hot cast. (Although, let’s be honest! Hot cast = a nice bonus.)
My underlying modus operandi: Just because it’s pop culture doesn’t mean discourse has to be shallow. I’d like to sustain a fun but hopefully substantive level of conversation, mixed with some irreverence. Because it’s not worth it if it’s no fun.
I occasionally tweet (@javabeans). And even less occasionally blog (elsewhere, that is). There’s also a Dramabeans Facebook that gets ignored a lot.
I’m 50% writer, 50% couch potato. I lean left; politically, not footwise. I like to make snap judgments, then reconsider them to a pulp. I enjoy grammar, if only to break some more rules. I’m a tv junkie, a critic, a fan, but mostly importantly, I’m a writer who likes to procrastinate by watching k-dramas. The fact that I can do both now blows my mind.
I feel very strongly that people can have thoughtful discourse on just about any topic, and that art—mass, pop, high, pulp, whatever it may be—can and should be discussed intelligently for the thing it is.
Hence, I thought Dramabeans would be a good place to exercise my brain. Or was it exorcise? That would explain the confusion.
About the name: A Girl Friday could rule the world, if she really wanted to. You know her—the best friend smartypants, the plucky assistant who always knows exactly what the private eye/cop/secret agent/superhero needs? She’s cute and clever and sassy and loyal, and pretty much smarter than everyone in the room. I mean, could Jack Bauer have saved one day, let alone eight, without Chloe O’Brien?
My favorite Girl Fridays are of course ones that break the mold. Willow Rosenberg and Veronica Mars are the contemporary evolution of the classic character, and give us all hope that the geeky outcast can and will save the world.
Just think of me as Dramabeans’ girlfriday: the Miss Moneypenny to javabeans’ Bond.
I sometimes tweet things I shouldn’t. And ramble on in a blog.

Hehe. I get the Miss Moneypenny and Bond reference girlfriday is trying to make but I couldn't help but wonder...would the reference better be used as Miss Moneypenny to M rather than Bond?
Miss Moneypenny is actually M's secretary where as Bond's relationship with Miss Moneypenny is only flirtaciously passes before meeting with M.
Either way, I totally get what is being said.

I love your blog!!!! I came across it when I was scouting for You're Beautiful and I highly appreciate the episode by episode summary and analysis! It was like a time saver for me to 'rewatch' the entuire series again and have some sort of opinions on the plots, which I find very interesting! Thanks for the info on some terms like oppa, which I found really useful and recommendations on romcom...my type! Keep up the good work!!! =ppp

Thank you so much for your kdama news! It is sometimes hard to find good information in English and you site is my favorite source. Thank you for translating and for including links to the original source articles where you get your information. Because you include these, your articles can be used as authoritative sources to update Wikipedia or the Internet Movie Database (IMDB). Very valuable!

Your website is excellent! I just started getting into Korean dramas on a fluke after discovering them on Hulu last week, and I've already devoured "Boys Before Flowers" and "The Woman Who Still Wants To Marry" -- those two admittedly because I have a teensy little crush on Kim Bum. Lol. Anyway, keep up the great work!

I used to visit this blog way back before the world of viikii when we really needed recaps as we waited for subs. Your recaps (as well as other comments on soompi) were the reason I decided to watch Dal Ja's Spring (even though they extended it and that usually is the kiss of death for me) and that was a drama I really enjoyed. So thank you!
I stopped visiting this blog when Coffee Prince seemed to take over it and just visited from time to time. Anyway, Coffee House brought me back and I'm glad it did!
While I disagree with your assessments/analysis and ratings at least 50% of the time, I thoroughly enjoy the blog. Even if I don't read the recaps, the comments are usually entertaining so thanks to the commenters too.
Girlfriday is sarcastic and hilarious and I somehow think I've found a kindred sister in her (lol... don't freak out.)
Anyway, you've got a good thing going here so keep it up!
I just wanted to drop a note of appreciation and thank you for your blog. I hope it somehow pays $$ too cos you guys deserve it. Take care.

I've always been a regular (and avid) visitor in your blog but it will be my first to drop a note of gratitude and appreciation, and all I can say is...such patience, passion and hard work! I'm loving the reviews, recaps, and now dissection of pop culture as more often depicted in kdramas. Honestly, I check your posts first about an upcoming series before I decide to watch them online, and after watching, if I feel that it's worth downloading I'd do so ü thanks and keep it up!

I just want to say that I love this blog. I've been reading for most of the day and everything has been both entertaining and insightful (I think my favorite is the Oppa article but that's only hairs breath to others). I'm so glad there are people discussing dramas the way I do with unabashed love and a cocked eyebrow.
Keep doing what you're doing!

Just want to say, I LOVE YOU GUYS! I'm not Korean, so I rely on English subs, and sometimes I just don't understand culturally what's going on. I make inferences, but i love that you guys explain in English some of the Korean culture stuff that is pertinent to the story. GirlFriday, do you write for TelevisionWithoutPity? Your humor in recaps slays me (I've been reading Personal Taste), and seems familiar. Javabeans, I quite enjoy your comments at the end of recaps. Thanks so much for recapping kdramas in English, and bringing the love of Kdramas to the non-Korean world!

Hi Javabeans and Girlfriday ^____^
THANK YOU! That is for making this blog. You guys are awesome! I love how you dissect each drama and all those great insights about Kpop. I'd been following this blog for a year. And this made my kdrama addiction notches higher I guess. It's my first time to post something in here :)... I discovered this site because of Jang Geun Suk, coz I'm quite a fan, haha. After I saw him from the movie Baby and Me just last year, (I think it was shown in Korea sometime in 2008) I'd began searching infos about his previous works and I stumbled on this site. If not for this site I wouldn't know that You're Beautiful was currently showing then in Korea. I started watching it from youtube and have it downloaded eventually. And reading you awesome recaps and all those comments kept it more interesting as I watch the series.
I'd been a Kdrama junkie since 2004, I usually wait for the Philippine Broadcast and most of them are quite old or finished a year ago, whatsoever. But now, I'm updated because of you. And also I started reading about your past recaps of other dramas, and I agree to most of your rants and raves (e.g. Kang Ji Wan is a great actor!). Most of your recapped dramas were not shown here. So I had searched for some dramas…
And I'm really looking forward for your Mary Stayed Out All Night recap ^__^ Keep up the good work ^__^
P.S., I'm also wondering if you have facebook or twitter.

I've been a daily (actually, several times a day) visitor to this site ever since I found out about it. The recaps fill me in on details I missed and also help me understand cultural and language details that I wouldn't understand or pay attention to otherwise. This is also my go-to site for news about kdramas and actors/actresses.
Thank you for all of your hard work in providing the news and recaps and everything! I really, really wish someone would create a sister site for jdramas and such!

Thank you for your genius!!! I am loving Dramabeans!
Especially the recaps of SKK, seriously witty writing! Again sheer genius! ^_^
I started watching Kdramas 2 years ago, while nursing my baby in the wee hours of the night. I started with He who can't marry, BBF, Coffee shop prince etc... got hooked, can't live without it anymore, addicted, at least a mere hour or so, a sniff, a giggle, the right fix :)
Ok, the Americans got their Glee, Modern Family, 30 Rock, True Blood, Dexter, Brothers and Sisters etc etc... but Kdrama is different, yeeeey asian!
It's like feeling like a teenager all over again...
I too am a kind of a money penny... Hot sexy mama by day ;) and a geekfest kdramalovin' in pyjamas by night :)
Keep up the good work...

Hallo, JB and GF and all other recappers! Just wanted to let you guys know that all the recaps are deeply appreciated and treasured. You guys enlighten me regarding so many things in each episode that you recap.
BTW, is there going to be recaps for Secret Garden? Saw the Ep 1 raw and I'm hooked. Didn't realze that Hyun Bin was such eye candy until now! It's more interesting and natural, despite the impending body swap..kekeke..than Mary Stayed Out All Night and I can't wait for your input for this drama.

Hi! I've only recently started watching korean drama, but I have to say that I'm loving the storylines!
I'm vietnamese so I do have to rely on the subtitles.
What I have noticed, though, is that at the beginning of the series, the subs are fantastic; easy to understand.
But towards the middle and the end of the series, the subtitles start to go haywire, with words I don't understand, and make no sense at all!!!
Just wanted to ask if you have any idea as to why, because I just get disappointed because I can't understand the storyline, just when the plot gets interesting!!!!
I also love love love your recaps, please keep them coming!

Oh my goodness. I finally found an intelligent site that responds to my guilty pleasure of watching the recently discovered k drama. I can't explain why this stuff speaks to me so forcefully. I have never been a tv or film buff and i stumbled onto Coffee Prince and Queen Seon Duk and fell down a deep, very deep rabbit hole. So to find someone who steps back to think about and explain this K phenomenon is so excellent. The summaries from Drama Fever and other sites is paltry, really demeaning of some of the great scripts and acting although I couldn't do without drama fever. So thank you for your great writing and sense of humor.
I have got it bad-including seeking out the Korean restaurants in my town and multiplying my daily intake of rice.
