The King Loves: Episodes 13-14

It’s nice to finally bring one of our boys into San’s dilemma, because I was getting worried about her shouldering everything on her own and suffering in silence. She’s a tough cookie though, and she definitely isn’t the type to ask for help, but it’s nice to have people who want to help her anyway, especially if it’s Rin.

EPISODE 13 RECAP

Rin begs San not to accept her marriage proposal, then calls her by her true name. They relocate to somewhere private, and San asks how much he knows about her. He answers in a roundabout way, stating that he knows what needs to be known, but that isn’t a suitable answer for a frantic San.

Thus, Rin briefly recounts San’s current situation, and to San’s total astonishment, he even reveals that he knows about the development of Jeon’s plan to blackmail her. Rin asks San again if she’ll accept the proposal. She tells him that she should be grateful for the chance to marry into the royal family, but Rin vehemently tries to dissuade her, reminding her of Jeon’s cruelty.

She pretends to have forgotten all about the interrogation, but Rin can see through her brave act. He vows to find another way to protect her secret and her family, without marrying Jeon.

Instead of answering, San asks for a favor: She explains that as a student of Teacher Lee’s, she learned that she cannot make others suffer for her sake, thus all she wants is to learn how to dance at the festival in order to make a precious memory that will last for the rest of her life.

Afterwards, Rin storms into Song In’s teahouse and finds Jeon in the company of several gisaengs. Rin dismisses the gisaengs by angrily toppling over a table, ruining the mood.

Rin brings up the marriage proposal, and Jeon isn’t surprised that Rin already knows about the Bi-yeon-San-switch. Rin reminds Jeon of his declaration in the interrogation room, but Jeon contends that he heard that Won expressed something similar to the king, and now he wants to know if it’s Rin or Won that loves San.

Rin’s surprised that Jeon knows about the confession and roars at him for knowingly coveting and threatening the crown prince’s woman. Jeon breaks into hysterical laughter at Rin’s accusation, then suddenly erupts into a rage and slams Rin against the door.

Jeon growls at Rin for being “the mongrel crown prince’s” lackey, and claims that in doing so, Rin has betrayed his country and family. Rin’s eyes flash with fury at Jeon’s insult of Won, and he twists Jeon’s arm behind his back to get him to submit.

In detail, Rin lays out the incident from seven years ago, including Jeon’s role in the matter, then presses Jeon for the reason why he set such an elaborate, bloody stage just to marry San.

Song In enters then, which gives Jeon the opportunity to break free from Rin’s grasp. He remarks offhandedly that Won remains unaware of San’s situation, since there would be an uproar if he knew. Rin replies sharply that Won will know all soon enough, and will launch an investigation to expose their treason.

Song In points out the flaw in Rin’s logic, and explains Minister Eun’s deception to spare San from being sent as a tribute to Yuan. Therefore, should the truth be revealed, then San will be dispatched immediately, and since her father will now be a criminal who broke Goryeo law, San will be forced to marry someone of lowly status or be sold as a gisaeng.

With his trademark calmness, Song In states that Jeon is merely trying to save San from such a fate.

Rin heads to Won’s quarters in a daze, now unsure of what he should do. He stands in front of the door, and ultimately decides not to go inside. Instead, he thinks back to the rest of the conversation he had with Song In outside the teahouse.

Song In commented on how taken Won seemed with San, and noted that if Won knew of San’s deceit and remained silent, then there would be repercussions to pay. He confessed to Rin that in actuality, he had hoped Rin would tell Won the truth, which would lead Won to make a scene at court and further estrange father from son.

Rin accused Song In of manipulating Jeon, and so Song In replied that originally “they” wanted Rin to marry San, since he is much smarter than Jeon and would make a more dignified king.

Rin scoffed, clutched the dagger at his hilt, and threatened to kill Song In. But Song In alluded to a group acting behind him, meaning that others knew of San’s secret, so Rin killing him wouldn’t put an end to her troubles.

Song In had implored Rin to consider Goryeo instead of being blinded by his loyalty to Won, since dozens of precious daughters will be sent to Yuan every year, and if Won becomes king, then the practice will continue.

The next morning, Won accompanies his mother around the compound as she oversees preparations for the festival. He tries to excuse himself, so Princess Wonsung reveals that Won will need an ally from a powerful family, and thus should be married soon.

This is news to Won, but he shelves his surprise when he and his mother greet the king in his chambers. The king was clearly not expecting them so early and seems flustered that they arrived without prior notice, describing the visit as an “ambush.”

Princess Wonsung spies the extra set of used utensils on the breakfast table, then sees Boo-yong hiding in the corner. She assesses the king’s pet, but continues conversing with her husband, inviting him to her party that evening.

Boo-yong keeps her head lowered, and Princess Wonsung raises the girl’s chin by using one sharply jeweled fingernail, piercing her until she bleeds. The king isn’t interested in the party, so Princess Wonsung feigns understanding and adds meaningfully that she’ll assume he’s doing something else at night then.

Princess Wonsung continues eyeing Boo-yong, circling her as she asks the king to issue an order to commence the search for Won’s wife. The king becomes interested in the conversation and asks if Won would consent to a marriage.

Surprisingly, Rin and San’s imprisonment did not reach Princess Wonsung’s ears, so the king explains how Won chose some nameless woman over his cherished friend.

Despite her shock, Princess Wonsung claims to understand Won’s “crush” at the king’s provocation. She states that it doesn’t matter how many nameless women Won becomes enamored with, because only the crown princess will matter, since he will remain married to her all his life.

She looks straight into the king’s eyes as she speaks, full of meaning, and his face stills. But then he smiles when Princess Wonsung warns him that Boo-yong isn’t as innocent as she seems, since she stood her ground against Princess Wonsung’s intimidation. Therefore, the princess warns, the king should be wary of Boo-yong.

Princess Wonsung leaves in a sour mood, and Won follows shortly after. When they’re gone, the king observes with amusement that Princess Wonsung still has feelings for him even though he’s been so cruel to her for so many years. He sighs, then adds that it’s better if she doesn’t.

Later, Jeon arrives at Minister Eun’s to escort a veiled San to the party. He impishly asks if San is the real girl, which leads San to glare at him disdainfully.

Minister Eun quietly encourages San to give Jeon a chance since he might not be so bad, but then makes her promise that she will tell him if she feels she cannot go through with the marriage. She agrees, but her eyes conceal her intentions to endure regardless.

Jeon extends his hand to help San into the luxurious carriage he’s prepared for her. She hesitates, but right before she places her hand into his, Rin rides up on horseback and offers to escort her instead.

Jeon pushes back even when Rin explains that his orders come directly from Won. It falls on San to decline Jeon, and she lies that she has claustrophobia and can’t ride in carriages. She bids him farewell, then rides off with Rin on horseback. Bye Felicia!

Minister Eun and servant Goo-hyung recognize Rin and watch San leave with him approvingly.

The pair slowly make their way to the palace, and Rin expresses his regret for not bringing a carriage since the day is cold, which makes San smile. Rin comments on her smile, and San argues that it’s impossible to tell with her veil, but he says that he can.

He tells her that he was worried she would spend the evening crying beside Jeon, and she repeats his concern to herself while averting her gaze. She brightens up and suggests they race the rest of the way, but Rin thinks it’s too dangerous because her horse is a warhorse.

She smiles at his persnickety ways, then takes off in a head start. He grins to himself then chases after her. D’awwwww, these two!

Minister Eun informs Bi-yeon of the fish shop he’s acquired for her to live in far away, but Bi-yeon worries that San will be forced to marry Jeon and begs Minister Eun to save her.

Crying now, she describes the new daggers San keeps hidden under her clothing to protect herself from Jeon’s advances.

He asks if San has someone else in mind to marry, and though San has never told her directly, Bi-yeon tells Minister Eun that San often thinks of someone and smiles to herself these days.

A veiled Dan arrives at Princess Wonsung’s party, and is immediately recognized by a masked and besotted Jin Gwan from the butterfly stitchings on her veil. Dan asks after Rin, and Jin Gwan fumbles through his explanation, but Dan seems used to his incoherency and fills in the blanks, guessing that Won sent him to escort her.

Princess Wonsung and her servants observe the guests arriving and are able to recognize those from powerful families based on the stitching designs of their masks/veils.

They make note of Dan, arriving with Jin Gwan, and later Rin, arriving with San. San remains unidentified to them, since her veil is plain and without any embroidery.

San and Rin roam the grounds, and she compliments his attire. He tells her that his sister made his mask and added the butterfly design to it. Still unaware of his true identity, San is surprised that he has a sister.

San comments on how beautiful the decorations are, and is reminded that this is also Rin’s first time at the party. Before they can continue chatting, Won sneaks over and snatches San’s wrist, but is stopped by Rin immediately.

Won ushers San away after telling them that “the scariest person” is watching them. Rin looks toward Princess Wonsung and sees her eyeing them intently before following his two friends.

Won finds a private place for the trio and studies San’s new look happily, though he announces that she looked better before. She lunges forward to punch him, but he distracts her with a gift.

He tells her that her nondescript veil is drawing attention since she can’t be identified, and so he hands her a new one he’s prepared. She asks Rin for confirmation, as if thinking he’ll be honest with her, and he agrees.

San removes her veil to change, but Won moves it out of her reach so that he can admire her unconcealed face for a moment. She thinks he’s teasing her for looking ridiculous, but he says that she’s much more beautiful than he thought.

She dons the new veil with a green bird stitching, as Won also changes out her hairpin for total obscurity. San asks about the meaning of the bird design on the pin, but Won cheekily replies that she needn’t know.

Won holds out his hand for San to accept, and though she seems unsure, she eventually places her hand into his. And so, Won leads her away, leaving Rin alone to watch them leave.

EPISODE 14 RECAP

The sun sets and the the maypole dance commences. San and Won twirl to the music, holding a ribbon in their hands. Rin begins in the circular formation near Dan, but forgoes his position for Jin Gwan, then walks up to Jeon as he arrives.

The brothers do not exchange pleasantries; Rin merely stares at Jeon as if to makes his presence known, and to warn his brother to behave. After Jeon leaves in a snit, Rin looks across the room and watches San dance amongst the colorful strips of ribbon, catching her gaze between beats.

Won comes into view, his eyes only on San. In voiceover, he says:

“Now that I look back many years later, this was the day it all began. The friend I trusted more than myself began to deceive me, and between my love and me appeared a chasm neither could cross. He was the only friend I had and, she, my only love. Now I look back many years later: On this day, I knew nothing, and because I knew nothing, I smiled.”

After their dance, Won finds San and Rin conversing secretly alone. They’re alarmed when Won finds them, but he doesn’t react strangely to the scene.

When San tells them she is leaving soon, Won tries to entice her with some wine to get her to stay, and grabs her hand. That’s when she notices him wearing the bracelet she gave him, and she begs him to throw it away since it’s grubby.

She then advises the two boys to not spend too much time together since it’s weird, but also asks them not to fight with each other. Won realizes she’s bidding them farewell, and points out that the mountain isn’t very far, so they’ll visit her often.

San tells him not to visit, then nods at Rin wordlessly before leaving. Won finds San’s behavior strange and asks Rin if they were arguing about something.

He can’t answer Won, and so he excuses himself to tend to some “family business,” then walks off in the other direction.

Rin goes to Geumgajeong and finds the cart pullers trying to escape again. He takes one of them by force to investigate the incident from seven years ago. Sensing Rin’s peculiar behavior, Won learns of the situation from the remaining cart puller and sends some men to follow Rin.

Won explains to Jang Eui that since Rin wishes to hide something from him, he will pretend not to know until he finds out what it is.

Meanwhile, Princess Wonsung invites Dan for a private chat, asking how she enjoyed the festival. Dan praises the extravagance and wide array of activities, leading Princess Wonsung to smile. She cryptically tells Dan that Goryeo must continue to be peaceful and prosperous, then brings her to the interrogation area, where the guards are whipping a highborn woman for shaving her hair and pretending to be a monk in order to avoid going to Yuan as a tribute. Oof.

The woman’s father lays bloodied beside her, and Princess Wonsung explains that they disobeyed Goryeo law and threatened Goryeo’s peace with Yuan. She tells Dan that she will make an example out of them to discourage others from such dishonesty.

She orders all of the father’s wealth confiscated, and the daughter sent to Yuan as a maid, instead of a nobleman’s bride as she would have been. (She seems to be insinuating a similar fate for Dan.)

Rin takes the cart puller to his father Wang Young, where he gives his account of the incident seven years ago as an eyewitness, which incriminates Jeon of being in cahoots with Moo-suk.

Rin has brought along a second witness—one of Song In’s servants. The servant confesses that Jeon and Song In are planning a rebellion, and Wang Young’s face contorts in dismay. That was easy.

Wang Young is crushed by the news, but Rin is only interested in stopping the marriage to San. Wang Young argues that Jeon truly cares for San and waited seven years (until after the ban) to marry her. Rin argues that that isn’t true, but his father wants to hear Jeon’s side first before acting.

Rin shouts that Jeon will only spew lies, but his father just commands Rin to wait.

He rounds the corner in time to see Jin Gwan carrying an unconscious Dan home. Jeon interprets Princess Wonsung’s actions as a threat to force Wang Young to her side, but Wang Young proclaims that he will kneel before Princess Wonsung if it means Dan is spared from being a tribute.

Jeon argues that he’ll be playing into her hands, and he will be turning his back on the king. Jeon offers an alternative: accelerate the timetable for his marriage.

Jeon reasons that a royal wedding is a large celebration, and that will mean a daughter cannot be taken from a family during that time. Jeon puts on an act and tells his father how he cannot marry anyone but San, and it seems to convince Wang Young.

Wang Young goes back to Rin to tell him of a discussion he recently had with Minister Eun. In it, Minister Eun had asked if Rin had feelings for San. Wang Young poses this question to Rin now, and wonders if those feelings are now motivating his campaign against Jeon.

Rin doesn’t answer right away, and instead thinks back to the private conversation he had with San after the maypole dance. San thanked Rin for keeping her secret from Won, then guessed that Won wasn’t the type to restrain himself from making a fuss.

San got this faraway look in her eyes and wished Won would never find out about her marriage and her secret. Internally, Rin thought longingly, “Can you try to guess how I feel?”

She supposed that since she’ll wear a veil forever, Won will never know, and Rin replied softly that he knows the truth. At that moment, Won had interrupted them.

In the present, Wang Young grills Rin for an answer, and so he finally admits that he does. His father can’t believe Rin would fall for the same woman as his brother and hoped Rin would refute it, but inside, Rin is battling another war between betraying Won and being honest with himself.

He tears up thinking of Won, then steels himself and declares to his father that San is a woman that he cannot have feelings for. His father is relieved until Rin says that Jeon cannot marry San either, but when he starts to explain why, his father stops him and promises to take care of it himself.

Wang Young takes his leave as Rin clutches his chest, feeling devastated.

Based on Jang Eui’s report, Won realizes that Rin is trying to stop the marriage on his own, but doubts that he’ll be able to. The head eunuch reports Wang Young’s request for Jeon’s marriage to the king, and the monarch’s subsequent approval.

The head eunuch also reports Princess Wonsung’s rage-filled reaction to the news. Won then asks about Rin, who has been MIA for the last six days, and Jang Eui replies that Rin cannot be found.

Won grows agitated by Rin’s absence and asks rhetorically if Rin refuses to confide in him because he thinks he would hurt Jeon. Jang Eui also tells Won that San has also disappeared, and so Won presumes that San went back to the mountains.

Rin arrives right then, looking tired, and informs Won that today is the day of Jeon’s official marriage proposal to San.

We cut to San getting dressed, as Bi-yeon enters with hair ornaments for her to wear. Bi-yeon tearfully asks if San means to go through with the marriage, because once she accepts Jeon’s official proposal, there can be no turning back. San picks up the hairpin she received from Won and hides it away in her clothing, realizing that it’s time to forget her old life.

Bi-yeon hands San her veil and asks if she will accept a life of wearing one forever. San’s eyes water, but soon she puts on the veil and accepts her fate.

Jeon and Wang Young arrive at Minister Eun’s with the dowry, and the soon-to-be in-laws move to go inside, when a handful of royal guards enter to pave the way for Won’s grand entrance.

Won walks up toward the ministers as San watches him in disbelief. He purposefully avoids casting San a glance, and instead addresses Minister Eun, who greets Won by his official title. Thus, San finally learns the truth.

Won tells Wang Young that he felt something suspicious afoot in this proposal and decided to investigate. Then finally, he looks toward San, and walks toward her until he’s standing right in front of her.

She looks up to return his gaze, as the truth is revealed at last.

COMMENTS

Whew, I was worried that Won was going to just march up to San and pull off her veil, since it definitely seemed like something he might do. I’m sure he has some clever plan in the works, but I’m really curious to see how Won does or does not circumvent the narrative that Rin, San, and even Song In have assigned to him. Which is, that he’ll cause an uproar and make a mess of San’s situation after he learns the truth.

To me it seemed like a rather weak reason for keeping Won out of the loop, since he’s shown himself to be more thoughtful than that, but on the other hand, he’s also displayed some rage issues and a stubborn streak, so I guess for Rin and San it makes sense to err on the side of caution, especially when the stakes are so high.

Won has become increasingly difficult to fully cheer for in these last few of episodes, so I was really happy to see him take a back seat in today’s episode. I loved seeing this world through Rin’s caring, considerate, and gentle eyes. He’s the clear frontrunner at this point in terms of the romance with San (they’re so perfect together! Squeee!), but my favorite thing is still Won and Rin’s friendship above all else. Unfortunately, that’s probably going to be the first thing that goes up in flames.

It’s a good conflict (these episodes were rife with great conflicts!), even though I wanted Rin to give Won some indication that something was wrong, and that he needed help solving San’s problem. For Rin, their friendship isn’t instinctively a two-way street; it’s a relationship of unwavering loyalty and service. I think Rin views his role as one that executes Won’s will, and does everything he must to find a solution—particularly if that problem can threaten Won or bring him harm in any way. Song In’s warning of Won’s complicity in San’s deceit clearly terrified Rin and kept him from going directly to Won. Rin likely thinks that a servant doesn’t bring problems to his king for him to solve, but a friend does. And that’s the difference. I’m hopeful though, because Rin did show up at the end.

But let’s be honest, this episode was all about Rin and San. Building their leg of the romance in such an organic, sweet, and quiet manner was a great move, and served as a powerful contrast to Won’s pushy way of love. San and Rin are two people who’ve lived their entire lives putting others before themselves, so it’s fitting that they’ve found their way to each other in this forbidden and subtle way.

My heart was so full watching them interact together—their attraction has always been slowly simmering along, but today, it finally came to a boil so effortlessly. It makes sense because someone as loyal as Rin would not cross the line consciously, so I absolutely loved how Rin first confessed to San as a way to protect her and Won together, then slowly realized that his lie became a truth that he can never express. I’m eager to know if the show can pull off a compelling reason for Won and San to be together at all, because after this episode, I’m firmly on the other ship.

I've never been a fan of Won-San, but the bird embroidery on the veil really sealed the deal. Ugh :(

Sorry, don't ask me to believe that Song-In is a patriot and cares for anything other than self-interest. I simply don't believe it, nor do I believe Jeon is any better. They are villans through and through!
Poor Dan, you are the sweetest, purest most perfect. No one could help themselves but save you from the bitter and evil Princess Wonsung.
Rin has actually let Won down despite his motivation. He is his only friend and as such, in not telling him the whole truth and in not believing in him he has betrayed him. He knows full well the evil interests of Jeon and Song In but his eforts to defeat their interests were pathetic and he was equally pathetic in his treatment of Dan. This is where the friendsip takes the down hill path.

Sometimes (or many times) those who are portrayed as villains turn out to be just broken characters with good heart. There is also the real pure evil but in this drama I haven't seen it yet. Jeon was as horrified as his dad when he saw his little sister passed out in Ji-gwan's hands trully he isn't only thinking about himself. Song-in I don't know his hidden motives but his conversation with Rin hints that he care for the people of Goryeo. Of course I don't view him as patriot but like I've said in earlier recap I can't hate him and Jeon cause I can totally understand their resentment toward Won.

I don't really ship San being with Won. She has some admirable qualities and is cute in a fiesty way, but she also has long experience as the daughter of a rich merchant, of being head-strong and foolish. It was partly that that lead directly to her mother and their guards being ambushed and killed and her servant severly wounded. She has either little brain, or has deliberately avoided the reasoning that these two boys were no ordinary beings but privaledged and high ranking. Won's infatuation with her is equally stupid. It cannot benefit him to be with her.

I like when they give voice over,
I really appreciated those voice over, we can see their thought and how it happens in reality.
and I really like how they show the Rin and his dad confrontation.
The editing makes we see why Rin saying that , what makes him doubt and then realised what he can do and what he really wants.

I've become too emotionally invested in this series and we've probably 11 or 12 more angsty episodes to go. I've always been a Hong Jong hyun fan so I'm in his camp, but Siwan has impressed me with his acting and his role is so well written, with deeper and deeper layers of selfishness. I'm also surprised by Yoona, think she's doing a nice job too. She and Jong hyun's chemistry is off the charts. I'm really liking the writing for the King and Queen, how he hates her (but not personally) because he's so resentful of the fact they have to pay tribute to the Yuan Dynasty. I can totally see why other factions want to get rid of Wang Won and put a pure blood royal on the throne. The series is more well done than I thought. And I appreciate the reviews because the subtitles are a bit different and frankly what you say about scenes is better explained than the subtitles.

Dan and Jin Gwan are my favorite thing: how cute that she can decipher him so easily, and be so comfortable with him while he is a bubbling fool!

And, while this show has many flaws, I do agree that it has great conflicts: even if you could lock all the protagonists into one room to reveal all their secrets, their situation still would not find a solution: the risks are very real (and potentially deadly) for San to be discovered, for Dan to be sent as a tribute, for Rin to lose either his family or his friendship with Won or San (or all of the above). Bring on the angst! I'm ready to support all these characters in their pursuits even though their best interest might be mutually exclusive!!

Both Rin and Won know that Jin Gwan likes Dan. I love the small gesture of Rin giving his dance position to Jin Gwan when he wants to leave. He gives the moment to Jin Gwan to dance with his dongsaeng. :)

I love Dan and Jin Gwan also! This is a really good show, though I wouldn't hope for a happy ending :( but they were able to build up interesting conflict to advance the plot. Also, like Scarlet Heart and Hwarang, this show has so many eye candies, even the antagonists are good-looking ones hahaha

Thanks for the recap!

I am getting more and more invested in this show. I looooooove Rin and Rin/San together, but also recognize that Rin probably should have gone to Won earlier. I get why he didn't though, and agree that is probably because of his subservience and wanting to protect Won. He is a great character (actually, they all are.) He broke my heart multiple times this episode.

I am finding Won more and more interesting after these episodes and the ones after. He is really lonely and pitiful, and I thought it was great how he went to stop the wedding simply because Rin asked him to. Their friendship is great, and I wish we'd have seen more of it before things got complicated. I also really like San, she isn't just a damsel in distress. I think at this point it's fairly clear that she likes Rin and is drawn to him, but also has a close friendship-bond with Won and wants him to be happy. But seriously, I need her and Rin to be happy together.

The dialogue and political plotting are also well done in this show, although sometimes I feel like we are missing some scenes. Like someone said above, I'm not sure if it's the subtitles or plotting but I feel like I need a cliff's notes to go along with some of it.

Finally - that night dancing sequence was so beautifully shot. You could feel the angst between Rin and San. This show over all is so pretty. Speaking of pretty, where was the hot snake assassin this episode? Excited for next week, hoping the ratings rise!

oh I really like the camera work in the dancing and in the voice over.
When Rin looked at San and then we see the view from San too.

I don't know if we see this a lot in another drama but they take time to make us see San's eyes, she didn't look at him and then she looked at him then they cut us to her view of Rin standing alone.

This reminds me of the scene when they talk in the secret places when their eyes met just a second.
It feels like it's natural, small moment and we get that shot, we see what they see as the character and what the director want us to see.

The show really relies on the character's feeling, emotion and how they view their world.
Won and Rin understand each other but also have this hierarchy that both of them did and honour.

I enjoy the ep and it's so pretty with very good camera work, it's really easy to watch cause the way they director places the camera, capture the essence of what they want to say.
One notable camera work that I remember rn is when Won comes at the end and start looking towards San, the camera move from behind and to Won's point of view with no cut and then show it from Yoona's point of view.
The background sounds also really good, like the scene when Won's came, the song builds up the atmosphere and reach max at him arriving.
So kudos to the team, it's really easy to follow what the drama wants us to feel even if we don't really know if what we feel is back up by the fact.

All those stare and quiet moment become precious.

Many scenes are really beautiful in this drama and the camera placement also sneaky.
Sometimes we see in in an angle that seems out of the characters view.

Also the costume is beautiful, not just the main lead but other people.
I really like the Queen details, those nails and queen vs girl in the king's chamber, their outfit is on point.

Thank you murasakimi! I found these two episodes subbed confusingly, like, there are probably more words they are saying that would make this flow better. I was looking forward to your recap for some clarification. I found the conversation with Rin and his father less powerful than maybe it was intended to be. It seems that his dad totally blew him off. Poor Rin. I am liking the quiet moments between Rin and San immensely. Please, drama, more of this. And Dan. What a sweet child. And I'm glad her 2nd brother was wrought with anger knowing that she would be a tribute. He's a really emotional character, with an evil temper, and I fear for San being married to him. This actor plays him so slimy and so well. I was also surprised the Queen knew nothing of the interchange and confession of Won to his father. I thought she had her spies everywhere!

Oh come on enough with the NAZI-KOREAN XENOPHOBIA!

In every k-drama i watched the people who are half korean or god forbid japanese, chinese, vietnamese are not only treated as second class citizens they are downright demonized. Yes the Yuan Empire was the enemy the Japanese Empire as well but the propaganda of PURE KOREAN RACE going on NOW in the 21st century in these tv series is worse than the Nazi perfect Nordic people (you know blond blue eyed gremanic square jawed little solder and little blond girls with two braids) and everyone who does not fit the cut annihilation as history teaches us where this mindset leads.
I find this completely unacceptable and annoying, and I come from multi national predominantly christian and muslim contry in South East Europe that was almost 500 years province of the Otoman Empire. The HATE toward anyone who is not from the same nationality or religion is WRONG, these Goreyo nobles hating their half Mongolian half Korean prince are not patriots they are XENOPHOBES since most of people here are from North America very similar example is the RACISM in that part of the world.

p.s I don`t care about the hate i know I will get for this comment, and yes I understand that south Koreans are technicaly in war with their north Korean cousins and that nationalistic propaganda is the norm there.

Some historical context. When Won becomes King, he actually outlaws families marrying same last name to keep the blood lines "less pure." There has been some backlash historically for him doing this, but now I understand why he did (and I'm not Korean, so not an expert). And as a Vietnamese myself, I do understand the Asian racism that is between the Asian countries. But it is hundreds of years in the making. China has always been an aggressor to these Asian nations, and they did horrendous things to these other Asian countries. Japan became very aggressive as well and enslaved Koreans. So, the hurt is real. And nationalism is not always based on ignorance or bigotry, but true and deep pain that people suffered under the the rule of aggressors.

I understand your point Ally, and the pain suffered from foreign countries, what I am against is the demonizing of foregners today on televison that is presented as completly acceptable natural thing, this feeds the hate toward todays chinese or other asian people which is a bad thing.
What has happend in the Balcan peninsula in SE Europe was war after war in the 20th century the against the Otoman Empire, the Balkan wars 2 of them the First world war the Second world war the Ex Yugoslavia wars in the 1990-99 all of this bloodshed in the name of nationalism and religious fanaticism because of the same propaganda that if you are not like me you are an enemy and don`t deserve to exist alognside me mentality, this is what that xenophobic mentality brings war and destruction.
Korean and any other country can make patriotic tv shows or movies, they have right and an obligation to show the injustices that their ancestors suffered, so that their dcendents and the world don`t forget these events but to openly demonize and blame and punish fictional characters to fit the role of monstrous villains it sends a very strong message "if you are not korean you must be evil" , with what goal is this done if not to call for hate and animosity today. This I do not approve of because hate calls for violence and nothing good ever comes from bloodshed and destruction.
We repeat history because we do not learn from it.

> demonizing of foregners today on televison that is presented as completly acceptable natural thing,

It's not presented as acceptable though, we as the audience didn't hate the crown prince cause he is depicted as kind hearted. If they really want to paint him as bad, there will not pick siwan who the kindest face and not describing him as a very understanding character to help people that he cares about.

Even the queen is seen as paranoid but hurt from the husband's treatment. The king also portrayed as a bad king.
If this really demonised other people why the bad guys are the King, the Wang family, Song-In ?? which is all Goryeo people and also the Queen s the bad character but from from Yuan.

This is a romantic love story set in Goryeo period of time. They can't just ignore the real political tension that happens in the era.
Is it better to show a positive reinforcement when the history is about the bad people?
What's so wrong to realised that all of our ancestor in both sides is doing a lot of bad things?
The reality is they were bad, people in that era is not living in harmony, they have a limited view of the world.
If you think this is a propaganda, everything is a propaganda in some extent.
Do they alter the history but present that as the absolute truth?
No, this is a fictional story and they add fictional character. This is not meant to be taken as real nor presented to.

I think the audience is pretty smart to know the difference between custom in the past and now.

> This I do not approve of because hate calls for violence and nothing good ever comes from bloodshed and destruction.
We repeat history because we do not learn from it.

If your concern is bc how nowadays people hate each other bc of their nationality, that's a concern and yes, there is a lot of problem in the world but violence actually very personal, most people reacted if they had been suffered and not just because of stereotype.
Also in the world today, people will call you out when you behave like an asshole to another people despite their nationality.
I am aware that many places still hold onto stigma or stereotype but now we have more information and way to clean up the prejudice.

So I don't think this drama promote hatred just because they adopted the environment that had happened in the past.
It even can promote the opposite, like the queen that love the king and Won that love San, it shows that where you come from doesn't matter, it's what you...

My comment was harsh I admit that, the story here is basicly a disfunctional mariage the King and the Queen are at each others throats, and is the Prince who suffers the cosequences. The Queen is mad at the King she punishes his loyal nobleman the King is mad at the Queen he humiliates his son in front of other nobleman, and the wheel turns again and again.
But the romantic interests are put in a way that San as a good korean noblewoman can like and sympatize with Won a half koran half the devil, but cannot love him because she must love a good korean man which is Rin.
If you wathched Empress Ki this was also the case as a good korean woman she was in love with her korean nobelman and had his baby than she as a tribute to Yuan had no other choice but to leave her true korean love for the mongolian Emperor and become his Empress and give birth to his sucessor.
This is almost always the case in korean dramas that involve foregners historical and conteporary it is pure propaganda saying korean woman must marry and have children with korean men, it might be subtle but it is always there in the background.
Now Rin`s character is set up as a friend to the prince he is loyal and cares for the prince as a person, but San is put in between them he steps back for now, because he loves her to the point he goes against his own brother and family to save San from a potentialy unhappy mariage, and respects Won`s feelings for San and cares for Won enough to hide his love for the same woman.
Did you see the scene in the previous episodes when he met the red snake mystery assassin that said he fights for the korean people the same one that killed Sans mother and tried to set Won up by shooting the King but saved a little boy from beeng trampled on by mongolian riders. Red snake tattoo said that Rin should be fighting against the Queen and Won not work for them, and he let Rin live after his identity was discovered.
This is the set up the Queen will do something bad to San Won will be blamed and Rin will side with Red snake assasin to save San, and go against his friend Won. Resulting in Rin wining over Sans afections and siding against Won as well which results in Won can not be trusted cause he is a half mongolian to protect korean people so he will be detoned which historicaly happend and San a good korean women will marry Rin a good korean men and live hapily ever after with their 100% korean babies.
This is where the prpaganda kickis in while people war over is Won the better man for San or is it Rin, where it has nothing to do with their characters but their nationality is a half korean better than a purebloded korean is the true question here?
Hence the my original comment about this show aproving xenophobia, subtille but at the front and center of it.

Also why do you think the Chinese goverment censored korean drama before airing it to China and now has that ridiculous ban thing completly for political reasons? Their propaganda the Chinese and the Korean clash terribly it has to be reedited for it to see the light on chinese screeens "for the good mental state of the citezens" as if anyone believes that nonsense.
Thank you XIAO JINGYAN for the frendly debate :).

> In every k-drama i watched the people who are half korean or god forbid japanese, chinese, vietnamese are not only treated as second class citizens they are downright demonized.

There is a lot of context missing here.
So let just talk about this drama,
the reason they hate the half blood prince here is that his mum is actively sending the tribute to the yuan empire.
Who wants to be treated unfairly?
They [the goryeo people] felt like they are the 2nd class citizen from Yuan, their position is the lower one and they want to gain the independence.

That's why they goryeo are oppose to the Yuan descend in goryeo since the more they are in goryeo, the more yuan's culture and yuan's rule applied in goryeo which from their perspective is not adaptable to goryeo's culture.

They don't hate the yuan's based on appearance but because the yuan ask for the impossible, the yuan makes them a 2nd class citizen and the yuan's keep interfering with the lives of goryeo for their own gains.

If you see that from this perspective, it's not nazi-korean zenophobia but more of people rebel against the higher power who just happen to be the Yuan.
If there is nothing happen and they discriminated them, then that's wrong but this queen and the regime has been asking many things and hurt the people of goryeo, they afraid this will be the norm and goryeo will always under the yuan's thumb.
Also, you don't see the average yuan's people get hate in drama, usually the merchant is fine with each other, it's the higher family who has political power who said names to each other.

Have you herad of the Ottoman JANISSARY solders, they were christian boys taken at a young age converted to Islam and served as the Sultan`s bodyguards and elite infantry units. These were my ancestors from the Balcan peninsula I live on now, do you see me demonize every Turkish person from Istanbul to Xingjiang province in today`s China for it, publicly on TV like is the most natural thing in the world, because Christians were second class citizens in the Ottoman Empire which was Muslim, and among other taxes they had to provide the sultan with their children to guard him from them.
Is it ok for me to hate somene because he belongs to a group of people that ruled over mine until 1913?
No I do not hate them, what bothers me is the people who think that HATE is OK,yes there was injustice done yes there were cruel people but it is NOT OK to HATE THE CHILD BECAUSE OF HIS PARENTS CRIMES.

you are bothered by the way the Goryeo people hate the Crown Prince??
but aren't every audience feels the same? that it's unfair and not a good attitude?
Isn't this drama clearly show that Song-In and those people are wrong?
Isn't the antagonist of this drama is Song-In, the queen and the King?
The child that seen through the audience eye is never a hatred character, even if he somehow becomes bad, we all see that it's not about blood but characters.

No one says the hate is okay, where do you see people mocking the Chinese just bc of this drama?

If you see the commenter here, people love and understand the crown prince, they adore him, just bc many people don't choose him as the better partner for San doesn't mean it because his origin or they hate the people from that region, It because of his attitude.

I am sorry but it's a strawman argument that tv show set in the period era is promoted hatred.
People learn and this show is not promoted the blind patriotism since the blind patriotism is shown as something extreme in both sides.

I don't see this show pushing any propaganda of purity. The lead character is half-Mongolian, and we're clearly meant to empathize with him against his opponents. And the other male lead, Rin, doesn't care about Won's bloodline either. But the show does try to explain the perspective of Won's opponents, and that's simply an effort to write well-rounded villains. The show depicts several perspectives rooted in a particular period of history, and I don't feel that it's pushed anything racist with regard to the present. Goryeo was conquered by and forced to send tributes to Yuan, consisting of both people and products, which was damaging to the country and culture. Goryeo's rulers were also forced to marry Yuan princesses, so that Yuan maintained its control via the ruling family. It's not xenophobia to resist your oppressors.

As a general statement, it's right. But as for the series, it's wrong, because it only depicts faithfully what was going on back then. There was a strong sentiment against the Yuan, because they were the descendents of the people who some years back had put to knife and fire the whole country, and were still dictating law, making the king a puppet king. Isn't their resentment understandable?
It has nothing to do with today's racism.

OMG these two episodes are so good, especially when I understand on each POV of Won-San-Rin, like I can't blame San & Rin for not telling the truth, and I also can't blame Won for being hurt by it.

Anyway, I was so happy in episode 13 watching Rin-San moment! The way they stare at each other before they go to the festival is everything to me! And when Rin can tell when San's smiling even with her veil ❤️

Evil Queen should stop. If she hurts the sweet and innocent Dan, I know that I'll hate her forever.

After watching this episode and next episode, I have this feeling that the drama will not follow the novel. Obviously the male lead here is Im Shi Wan's character and from this episode, they clearly try to shift the attention to Won-San as the main otp. Second lead never gets the girl in korean dramas... and this drama is not an exception to this rule. I will be happy if there is an english version of the novel online that I can read. Someone in the youtube comment kindly attach a link to a forum where they put summaries of the novel, which not good for my eternal uncurable second lead syndrome. :')

"Second lead never gets the girl in korean dramas... and this drama is not an exception to this rule." -- I think there's a few dramas that second lead gets the girl, so I hope this drama is an exception because I want Rin-San to be endgame. I'm a bit bias for saying this because I love Rin, but it's better for San though. Won's life is so complicated with his insecure mom and dad, and San doesn't like complicated things.

I think the next ep is still ambiguous but I like the honesty of Rin-San more than the action between Won-San.

I have the same thought that maybe the writer might change the couple but there's this little thing like body language and reaction that make me think that's San isn't that comfortable with Won.

This really feels like Chinese drama, cause in C-drama they like to give each contender the same opportunity, like the same amount of screen time or the same chance to wow the girl but let the last part of the drama as the conclusion.

@xiao jingyan,

"there's this little thing like body language and reaction that make me think that's San isn't that comfortable with Won."

I agree. I've been very aware of San's reactions and body language from the beginning. What it says to me is that she does not feel as strongly as Won does. The way she looks at Rin is different, and she seems much more interested in him than in Won. But I don't think she wants to hurt Won's feelings, so she's very diplomatic about it.

Do you not remember the voiceover during the dance where Won says this is the night (after all these years) that his friend began to betray him, and a irreversible chasm began to be between him and his love? Surely that means what I think it does. We're assuming he ends up alone, with neither his friend or his love, and hoping Rin and San end up together. Most historical dramas I've watched, the king doesn't end up with his first love (i.e. Kingdom of the Winds; Scarlet Heart, etc.)

I think there is another possible outcome that hinges on "chasm." Maybe Won ends up with San after all, and they are as estranged as his parents had been. The chasm might open up after the friendship between Won and Rin is broken irreparably. Or worse.

Yay for KINGDOM OF THE WINDS! It definitely had the doomed first love trope. SHINE OR GO CRAZY had a feisty cross-dressing lady merchant as the first love of a prince who had to marry someone from a politically powerful clan.

Re: the voiceover during the dance. I also had the same thought.
But then I am not 100% sure. Yes, it may mean that Won doesn't get the girl, but it can also be that the writers are trolling us. Why am I saying this? Because
1. Are the writers stupid, to spoil the ending even before half of the series is over?
2. It has happened before that we hear a sentence in a preview, and then when the next episode comes and we hear that same sentence in its context, it means something completely different.
An example I can think of when, in the preview, we heard the prince saying: "He will come to know the consequences of coveting something which doesn't belong to him".
We all thought he discovered Rin's feelings for San, right? And yet in the next episode we see that in reality he was referring to Jeong Wan's ambition to become king!
Maybe... Maybe that soliloquy of many years after is not at the very end of the story, but something will happen after that.

Rin balances out San's personality really well. Their personalities are different to each other yet similar at times. Rin is smart, thoughtful and always thinks of the consequences of his decisions first before making them while San is a bit hot-headed and impulsive like she chased after the her mother's killer without thinking that maybe the killer was baiting her out. But they are both similar as in always putting someone else before them. San and Won have similar personalities in that sense.
I really want San and Rin to end up together but I do no think that is going to happen. I think San and Won will be the endgame. That is how the story is going so far.

This is the first drama I watched that I can't tell who the girl is in love with. Usually in kdrama it's very clear cut from the beginbing who the guy/girl has eyes for and they don't even want to look at another/reject others outright. But I seriously can't tell who is in San's heart. Won or Rin? She makes it seem like it could be either and I truly do not know. I love her rapport with both of them which seemed equally earnest.

I love this show so much for so many reasons. Even all the side characters like the young shadow guards and the two bumbling idiots are so adorable and charming. I also love that it's a two way street with Won and Rin. Not just Rin willing to do anything and sacrifice himself for Won but Won is just the same. He will do anything for his friend and is willing to sacrifice himself. I have never seen a crown prince in a drama offer to marry another woman to save her and forsake his true love.

My heart breaks for these kids. I just want them all to have what they each desire and be happy.....but we all know this will not end well. Super invested and looking forward to each episodes!

Thanks, murasakimi, for your recap and comments.

Has anyone else noticed that Chancellor Dad seems to be totally oblivious to Jeon's scheming? He acts like such a credulous scholar when it comes to son #2 that I'm ready to scream. Rin brings witnesses of his brother's conspiracy to murder and blackmail his way into becoming Finance Minister Eun's son-in-law, and Dad says he has to go talk to the lying liar. Then he discounts the evidence of treason. Hello, isn't this the kind of crime that gets your whole family wiped out for three generations?

Wang Young doesn't stick around to hear Rin's complete statement after he tells Dad that he cannot aspire to marrying San. I admit his argument sounds weak, and he's a lousy debater. Why can't you just spit it out that the Crown Prince has staked a claim on San, even if you feel you have to swallow your own feelings about her?

If I were in Chancellor Wang Young's shoes, I'd have gone ballistic at Jeon. I'm truly puzzled by what I'm watching on screen, and have to wonder if the subtitles are inaccurate.

I have to hand it to Song In's silver-tongued deviltry: he makes it sound so convincing that Jeon's nobly trying to save San from being a tribute to Yuan that I'd almost buy it if I didn't already know what he'd done seven years earlier. But what really makes me hopping mad is the way he frames it as Finance Minister Eun trying to hide San from the tribute conscription -- when in fact he was trying to hide her from her mother's murderers. Arrrg!

And then the twist: suddenly the shoe is on the other foot when Princess Wonsung targets Jeon's sister Dan for a one-way trip to Yuan. He really doesn't see that it's exactly the same thing that he's trying to force San into? Song In wasn't kidding when he told Rin that he's a lot smarter than Jeon.

One other thing has bugged me about the veil business. Is Won really unable to recognize San's eyes as So Hwa's? For someone who's supposed to be head over heels nuts about her, I can't believe he wouldn't recognize her eyes.

I notice it too, Chancellor Dad is being oblivious to Jeon's scheming. Maybe he just doesn't want to believe that Jeon has bad side of him, and he believes that Jeon really likes Minister of Finance's daughter as he saves her 7 years ago and accepts her as his wife though with scar on her face. Or maybe because if he admits it, it does seem like Jeon is plotting a treason and it's going to create more problem to his family, so it's safe to just brush it off. Plus, the wedding is necessary to avoid Dan from being the tribute to Yuan, so he's blinded by his son's intention to save Dan.

Oh I actually believe that, it quiete amazing that people can recognise someone in that mask.
If you want to read more on that scene, that can show how he is unaware of her if he saw her as another people.
Jingyu can identify Dan because he truly likes her but San and Won is more and more like an obsession or Won see her as persona.
Well this is reaching ofc but I believe that you don't' always recognise someone when they change their attire and cover half of their face

I just have to headcanon that Jeon is their father's favourite son or something, because otherwise it's just insanely dumb of him to not listen to Rin's warnings. Or maybe Jeon has established an image in front of other people and their father, but Rin and the servants, people Jeon deems beneath him to keep a good image to, know the truth.

When it comes to recognizing San with the veil, there are many surprising stories where celebrities are not recognized with minimal discuise, simply because the people around them don't expect them to be there. The bodyguard recognized Dan because he was looking for her, Won found San and Rin immediately because he was actively looking for them. When Won looked at Jeon's bride, he might have thought she looked like So-Hwa, but in his mind, So-Hwa is a servant who is now in the mountains somewhere. The thought that she could be the young mistress of the minister is so unthinkable that even if he sees resemblance, he won't think "say... is that So-wa??" but rather "Whoah, her eyes are so like So-hwa's , I wonder if the rest of her face looks like her, too. Maybe if I drag the veil off I can see-... focus, you gotta help your bro." Kind of hypocritical since he is Crown Prince and dresses like a bodyguard, but if Goryeo had a very strict or rigid class system, maybe that works?

Until now, I'm still not sure who I want to end up with San. I like Won and Rin, they have different charms and they shine differently.

THIS DRAMA KEEPS GETTING BETTER AND BETTER AND IT DESERVES MORE RECOGNITION (and higher ratings)!

First of all, POOR RIN! ?
He's so selfless! Ghad

Why didn't Won recognize San when they met at San's engagement? But he recognized her during the masked festival? ? He's always looking hard at her in the past for him not to recognize her at this point.

I think instead of hating Song In The Villain and even Wang Jeon, I'm starting to see their point and kinda sympathize with them (but more with Song In). That conversation Song In had with Rin was moving. It made Song In look patriotic somehow. Or maybe his lover was sent to Yuan? They seem organized as he's also implying that they are a group plotting all this. Then there's Jeon who, for the first time, I saw as a decent person/brother. But but! This plotting of a patriotic rebellion to oust a mongrel (yet adorable ) CP will never ever justify their massacre of San's mother and their convoy. Cmon that was too brutal and unnecessary.

The scene were Biyeon knelt to San's dad was a bit random and unusual. It made me suspect Biyeon. Could she be a rebel too? Or maybe I'm just pushing the Moo Suk-Biyeon connection haha Also! I can't help but notice how separate Biyeon's hair was from her wig during the scene when San was about to put on the mask.

Because of future Won's narration during the maypole dancing festival, I'm getting a feeling that we'd get a time skip.

I still don't understand the king. He's been so wishy washy I can't connect the dots of his character. I'm already so over him being jealous of Won. Then he shows this passive aggressive pseudo affection towards Won and the Queen which I also don't get. Does he care about them or does he not? Gaahhhhh

I'm pretty sure now that San likes Rin romantically and sees Won only as a dear friend. That scene when their eyes met during the dance was so sweet but also heartbreaking. ? Like they are both holding themselves back from truly liking each other

I'm with you. At this point no one is pure evil in this drama I've seen.

I agree, in this drama, we haven't seen any character that is just pure evil. If Song In and Wang Jeon didn't murder Minister of Finance's wife and his people, I'd actually fall for Song In's words for the future of Joseon because the tribute to Yuan thingy is just ridiculous. But then again, everyone has their own reason and fault in this plot as a whole, so it's hard to point finger on who to blame and who's on the right side.

> Why didn't Won recognize San when they met at San's engagement? But he recognized her during the masked festival?

He saw Rin and identify his mask,

yeah, Song In and Wang Jeon does have a point but the sacrifice people don't understand anything,
they are brutal even if what they want to pursue is understandable.

I think biyeon always kneel cause she is a servant, like a habit.

Song In is really good at talking,
we as the viewer see everything he did so we can gloss over the trust about him but our character is oblivious. Oh this reminds me Nirvana in FIre in a bit, when mei changsu told prince jingyan that jingyan hands shouldn't be dirty because he pursues the ideal and let mei changsu do the things he can't do.

Rin to the rescue again!! with another swoon worthy patriotic demo. First with his "She is the woman I love' declaration and now Prince Charming riding his horse to fetch his girl. (Only I wish the director would make them riding on same horse)

I enjoyed this episode and boy do we have so many tangles to unravel. I do enjoy all the conflicts that have been presented so far. Our leads are in a bind both by themselves and in connection with others.

As much as I love WonRin, at the end of the day, service and duty always prevail when it comes to their relationship. I thought Rin would finally step up, but he remained to be the loyal servant who would not dare to take the woman his master loves. I wonder what will eventually make him act.

I have said it before, but I am saying it again because with each episode I see more and more of who our characters truly are. I love how WonRinSanDan each have their distinct personality that make for truly wonderful interactions if they are together onscreen. I enjoy sering the vast differences as well as the similarities among them. For sure, they are all pitiful and I just want to protect them all from pain and heartache. Sigh.

As always, this drama is a feast for the eyes... And ears. I will always point this out because it adds so much to my enjoyment of the show. It shows how carefully each scene was planned. Props to the team.

What does the bird mean? Is it the sigil of the queen, or symbolizes marriage? or is it a reference to the previous episode, where Won says he wants to keep San in a cage like a bird? There is something behind his secretive smile.........hmmmm

I love love love this drama. It is not without its faults but I love how it's focused on studying and exposing the different characters--what motivates them, what makes them tick, what pushes them. Each character has a distinct personality and motivation, and you can see that their actions and reasonings, why they may be flawed, are consistently a product of their own upbringing, fears, knowledge, and emotions. Everybody acts according to character, and they provide a rich backdrop for this psychological study. This writer is soooo good with character studies. <3 <3 <3

I lovee reading that most of you guys are on the rinsan ship. At least i'm not alone if it turns out we're having sls T_T

I was pretty sure in the beginning that San had feelings towards Rin. But then, Won gave her that mask with the bird pattern, and the hair pin. She looked at the hairpin for quite a while when she was preparing for the ceremony. I thought maybe she was thinking about Won at that moment? That was what got me confused. And also, the next episode too. Ahh , this drama is so good.

And also, like King Loves , this is the first drama for me too that I cannot know for sure who the heroin is falling for. I just want them all to be happy *cries in the corner*
