[Staff Spotlight] Get to know SailorJumun
by SailorJumun
Explain your username (and/or avatar).
Sadly, there’s no interesting story behind my name. I just combined two of my favorite things—Sailor Moon and the song “Mirotic (Jumun)” by DBSK—and thought it sounded cool, ha.
What is the first drama that you watched (or the first drama that made an impression)?
I distinctly remember walking in on my mom watching the 2005 makjang War of Roses and being so intrigued that I couldn’t walk away. I was definitely way too young to be watching something like that, but hey, it opened up those sacred gates to dramaland, so no harm, no foul.
What’s your favorite drama that you’ve recapped?
Hands down The Liar and His Lover. I loved it so much that I would find myself rambling (er, fangirling *cough*) in my recaps and having to edit the hell out of them. It was just wonderful having a sweet youth drama that was so confident with its story and its characters—characters that I so wish were real.
What drama genres do you especially like?
I’m a pure rom-com gal, but I especially love rom-coms with a slight fantasy or quirky twist thrown in a la I Hear Your Voice or Surplus Princess.
What drama genres do you especially dislike?
Medical dramas are usually a no for me. I’ll endure one if I love the cast, but if I can avoid it, I definitely will. While I can deal with heroes fighting against corruption in most other dramas, seeing that in a hospital setting just turns my stomach.
Is there a drama character you’ve ever strongly identified with, and why?
Eun-jae from Age of Youth had my heart the second I saw her. Like her, I’m terribly awkward and soft-spoken, but also just very weird. Actress Park Hye-soo gave me some awful (and hilarious) flashbacks to my freshman year of college with her on-the-nose performance.
What drama character would you want to be?
I’d love to be In-ha from Pinocchio. It’d be scary being a living, breathing lie detector, but I always found it admirable how she treated her Pinocchio syndrome as an asset in her life rather than a hindrance. And when it was a hindrance, she still took it like a pro. Teach me your ways, Unni.
What was your major in school?
I majored in English with a minor in Korean Studies. (Just graduated in May, woot woot!)
Favorite non-Korean movie and/or TV show?
Movie, Titanic (yes, I’m a total sap). TV show, ’90s sitcom Boy Meets World. Neither ever get old for me.
Which Hallyu celebrity would you actually want to meet and spend an hour with?
I’d like to say Jaejoong, but if I were anywhere near that man, I would probably jump his bones and I don’t exactly think he would appreciate that. So I’ll go with Lee Jong-seok instead. I’d take him out to get pampered since he’s had such a busy, busy year.
Your favorite drama has an unholy alliance with your most hated drama and produces a mutant baby drama. Describe the plot.
In a world where a meat-loving gumiho cross-dresses to enter an all-boy school and romance a spoiled rich boy who also happens to be a high-jumping champion. But how will this gumiho blend in with the guys when she doesn’t even know how to blend in with humans, period? Find out—at your own risk.

Oh gosh, how could I miss this!! Thankfully saw your name in chickachunga suggested related posts.
I loved your Liar recaps, especially the fangirling part. I would have read all the rambles even if you didn't edit them out. I know you have to be concise in recaps, but I wished I knew more of your thoughts on the drama, because I love reading all of them. Maybe you could put the "bonus" material in a comment so we could read them? Unless there's a rule where recappers shouldn't participate in the discussion within the comments?
DBSK is one of my fist loves in kpop. They're the reason why I discovered my current fandom, when they went on Explorers of the Human Body. I always thought Jaejoong was the visual of the group. I remember thinking his looks wasn't something that could be real or exist lol. My favorite songs of theirs will always be "O." When I saw them dance it for the first time, I thought it was the coolest thing I've seen all my life. Honestly, I almost became this close to becoming a Cassie, had Super Junior not snatched me away at the very last minute (only months before the split, talk about timing).
I love love Surplus Princess. Everyone harps about its ending, but to me, it was one of the most fun enjoyable shows to watch. Those kind of feel-good shows with camaraderie are always a favorite, like Liar, Weightlifting, Flower Boys, Age of Youth, Sassy, etc. I'm a rom-com gal too.
The reason I can't watch Titanic on repeat is because of the nude scene (I do rewatch parts of it). I first watched it when I was a kid, and got traumatized because I've only had watched strictly PG films before. Titanic was so big when it was released that everyone had to watch it, which is why an exception was made for me at that time. I went to the cinema with my family and got out of it in a state of shock as if I just caught my parents doing it lol.

@zeopriou If you know Super Junior, there's a member in it called Heechul, and he is always deceptively crazy on broadcast, but is in reality one of the most thoughtful considerate people out there. I'm an ELF (Super Junior fan), so I've been observing him for a long time. He doesn't cross the line, genuinely cares about others, and takes care of them. It's funny how the ones who appear as the least serious and crazy and silly are actually the least thoughtless ones. I've known many groups and I can genuinely say that Btob is one of those rare groups where all members are genuinely good extremely kind-hearted people, with a lot more wisdom and depth in them that you would expect seeing how stupid they act 90% of the time. They might be obsessed with video games but they also have rock-solid work ethics and good hearts.
I'm as old as their oldest members, the "dad and mom." Maybe it's why I feel proud of them like a proud mama bear when I look at how they've grown into good men. They're all imbued with a strong sense of integrity, especially...

They're all imbued with a strong sense of integrity, especially Peniel and Changsub. Peniel is just the purest being, watching his vlogs on youtube, you can tell how pure he is. Eunkwang, Sungjae and Minhyuk also have a strong sense of responsibility which I admire. They're a group that stands out for how every member cares and has love for every other members and their group. We don't see a lot of their serious sides but when we do, we can see how much thoughts they have behind that joking facade.
Yes, their talents and dorky side is what makes people like them, but honestly, as someone who has followed kpop groups for much too long, the talent part or funny doesn't feel as important or special to me now as the trust in how solid group is in its potential for longevity. I've suffered too many heartbreaks and disappointment. Just like with men, I no longer care about his looks and specs, just about his character and ability to be loyal, respectful and kind. It works the same way with fandom and idols for me.
I personally think their good character is that much more special, for all 7 members. Aside from Vixx and B1A4, they're the most "wholly" made of good people group. And ironically, they're also known as the craziest funniest stupidest of the new generation of idols with zero care for their image. I'm not their fan, but I genuinely like them, also because Super Junior takes especially care of them ever since their debut. I take an interest in all of Super Junior's protegees (ze:a, ukiss, seventeen, etc.) and among them, Btob has caught my attention for being the one with the strongest sense of group loyalty, individual personal responsibility, kindness and zero pretensions. Had my heart not been taken irrevocably by another group years before, I would have been caught by them for sure. I fall for the funny unpretentiously dorky groups like Shinhwa and Suju with a strong loyalty for each other.
And as a fan of a group who has lost multiple members, and weathered through scandals after scandals, and disappointment after disappointment, I envy the younger Melody fandom for being able to love a group that I know will almost never disappoint them or make them regret becoming a fan. I can never leave Suju because I love them too much, even after they broke my heart and disappointed me, but I've got to admit that their younger Btob hoobaes are much wiser and mature than them about the important things. It might have to do with the fact that Btob stayed underdogs for many years. I will always love Suju more, because their wittiness is unmatched. But they still have ways to go to mature.
The reason I fell for Suju in the first place was because I had trust that they could treasure what they had, after overcoming their status as the no-good leftover group. When you don't get things easily, you appreciate them more. Suju didn't have it easy, and Btob had it more difficult and for longer. Groups like Girl's Day too are like...

Groups like Girl's Day too are like that. I can trust how much they treasure each little achievement and progress they have made, not forgetting how they started, because it was so long and difficult to endure, and hard-earned and precious when achieved.
Within Suju, I trust that Heechul, Eunhyuk, Donghae will almost never disappoint me or make me regret. They're not the ones I love the most, I love the more flawed members unfortunately for my peace of mind, but they're the ones I trust the most. I honestly am jealous that Melody can boast of having 7 trustworthy members who think of others' well-being over themselves. Sorry for the long rambling. The issue of loving a group and not getting disappointed is a sensitive issue for me. T___T I'm still healing from it, though I would never regret loving in the first place. Like with family, the unlimited happiness it brought me, the countless laughs, the irreplaceable sense of fulfillment you feel when you love someone, is worth all the pain.

I want to add Ft Island to Shinhwa and Suju (and Btob) of examples of dorky groups with unprentiousness. I think I'm attracted to how those groups are so carefree, because I don't have that ability to act like myself and however I want.

wow, what a reply. Thanks for replying to me with this passionate comment. Are you sure you're not their fan? You sound a lot like one, don't resist! There's not rule that says you can only love one group. lol.
You mentioned every reasons why I love them. I can relate to the part about vicariously being carefree.
Like you said, my "catnips" to loving a group is a combination of:
- extremely talented but down-to-earth
- passionate about their music and job
- making me laugh (how can you not love someone who makes you laugh?)
- loyalty and camaraderie
- wittiness and savagery against each other
- dorks and comfortable with themselves
- ability to let go
Most of all, what makes this group so special is how positive they are, whether on stage, during rehearsal, in waiting rooms, or just in their daily lives. I just bask in their positivity and use them as a bright spot in my life.
