Choi Min-soo up to become eccentric count in Man Who Dies to Live
by tineybeanie
As his current drama The Liar and His Lover draws to a close, it seems that Choi Min-soo is already being scouted for other projects. He’s currently reviewing the script for the upcoming MBC 24-episode miniseries Man Who Dies to Live. Set in the 1970s, a man travels to a faraway kingdom in Arabia, and comes back a count.
Choi Min-soo has been offered the lead role of the count; his character is a uniquely tenacious man named Jang Dal-gu. Through his perseverance, he becomes successful in the kingdom of Bodantia and eventually earns a nobleman’s title. The drama’s story is centered around the events that happen when he reappears in front of his daughter and son-in-law, and is said to be a warm and cheerful drama that explores the real meaning of family.
Directing is PD Go Dong-sun, whose previous dramas have also been comedic but thoughtful (Queen of Housewives, Sly and Single Again, Me too, Flower!), so I’m hoping that Man Who Dies to Live might continue in the same trend, focusing on important relationship-related topics while still keeping a lighthearted tone throughout.
MBC drama Man Who Dies to Live will begin airing this July in the Wednesday-Thursday time slot currently occupied by Ruler—Master of the Mask.

The plot sounds a bit strange -the whole nobleman title thing. It sounds a bit fantastical. And what is up with the title? (For some strange reason I pictured The Count of Monte Cristo when I saw the title and read the first few lines.)
I totally fell in love with the actor though from TLAHL. Plus, I think he is very good looking. I will need more info before drawing any more conclusions.

Warrior Baek Dong Soo and Pride & Prejudice were my intros to CMS, and yes, he is one good looking ahjusshi.
I'm skeptical of the Count part as well. What is he a count of? And this fictional kingdom in Arabia isn't making me want to watch it any more. I hope they portray the culture well enough and don't mix cultures (as k-dramas are to do with Arab and Indian culture)

Kdramas can be so cringeworthy when filmed outside the country.

The least they could do is to get the nobility titles right. Counts are predominantly European. The Arabic "equivalent" would probably be Sheikh (anyone with more insight into Arabic nobility ranks, please do advise).

I was a noobie to K-drama when I watched "Sandglass," the first masterpiece Korean drama I've seen and Choi Min-soo was Amazing and that hasn't changed.

Picked it up late and never wished to comment on it. I think 500 plus comments was enough already. Hahaha. Still need to watch the last 2 episodes.

'a warm and cheerful drama that explores the real meaning of family.' Oh, until I read that I thought we'd get a Count of Monte Cristo story - he could pull it off too. He's ok in Liar and His Lover (where his singing and playing is the most authentic sound I've heard in the drama). But honestly I feel he's wasted in lighthearted roles. He rocked the intense, bloody warrior role in sageuks (he was my favourite character in Warrior Baek Dong Soo).

Just curious, because I think I see you commenting in drama(s) that I'm following too. How would you rate Warrior Baek Dong-soo?

I think I've seen you commenting in the Rebel threads... if so, you might like Warrior Baek Dong Soo. Overall (imho) it has a faster pace and more thrills than Rebel, but it kind of went downhill towards the end (alas, why do dramas often fail to deliver a solid ending? Fingers crossed for Rebel!) I'd rate it about 3/5.
Have you seen Chuno by the way? I'd also recommend it if you like Rebel (amazing soundtrack included).

I like Choi Minsoo but...this sounds like it has a dangerous potential to become very racist very quick.

From the sounds of it, the Arabian bit would be right at the beginning, and then the rest of the drama will be in Korea. So we probably won't see much of it at all. Plus, it's a fictional country so I guess they can pretty much do what they want. Should be interesting to see.

Fictional country or not, the fact that it is set in "Arabia" doesn't divorce it from stereotypes of the Middle East that will inevitably show up. I am 98% sure that there will be some offensive stereotypes.

I LOVED him as the irascible, unpredictable, and charming team leader in Pride and Prejudice. Idk about this plot though. It does the amazing job of sounding both weird and boring at the same time ?

Two questions, "why Arabia?" and, "who's the writer?" I feel like this will end up being super cringy given k-drama writers' track records with writing foreign characters.

A "warm and cheerful" drama set in the 70s, starring Choi Min-soo is all I need to know-- I'm in! I'd love to see more dramas set in different decades of the 20th century.
I'm a bit worried about the 24 ep. count, but hopefully it'll be well-paced like Jealousy Incarnate was.

I usually equate Choi Min-soo with intensity, mystery, a bit of menace even.
It may be that I have never watched him acting in a comedy, so I'm having trouble picturing him in a project that may pursue a lighter, more comedic tone. ....... But of course, anything is possible.
As others here have mentioned, the plot sounds a little bizarre ..... but Choi Min-soo is always an interesting ahjussi.

You had me there at man in 70s returns as a count. Went to Arabia and earned his title.
Then you lost me at "when he reappears in front of his daughter and son-in-law, and is said to be a warm and cheerful drama that explores the real meaning of family"
Which means boring? family drama despite its exotic background.
Would have preferred an adventure story to a family centric one

This drama is very offensive to the arabs and islam. Five minutes in i can see a lot if false information. I can't get myself to call them professional at all ( writer and director) since they obviously didn't research anything. Even though they apologized about it saying it's all fictional I don't buy it. How is it that it all shows their culture and religion (potryayed falsely) yet you say it's fictional? I think that this whole drama is just not worth it.
