Book & OST giveaway: I Believe in a Thing Called Love
by girlfriday
We’ve got a fun new giveaway for you from the author of upcoming YA novel I Believe in a Thing Called Love, which is about a drama-lover who employs romance tricks and tropes from her favorite K-dramas in an effort to jumpstart her love life (I’m sure we’ve all seen enough dramas to imagine how well that goes over). For a chance to win a signed copy of the book and a drama OST, enter below!
Here’s a message from author Maurene Goo:
Hi, everyone! You might remember that a few months ago javabeans and girlfriday were kind enough to interview me about my upcoming YA novel, I Believe in a Thing Called Love. Since the book is about a girl trying to snag a guy using the “steps” she finds in K-dramas, well, sharing this book with Dramabeans readers was a no-brainer. Not only that, javabeans and girlfriday were kind enough to consult and brainstorm with me so that I could make sure the K-drama facts were right and they helped me create the K-drama starter guide in the back of the book, as well.
And in the years that I took to write this book, I’ve learned about the incredible fandom through this website, and have become a newbie fan myself (I’ve watched K-dramas since forever but am a total lightweight when it comes to K-drama knowledge, and I’m in awe of all of you!). Basically, I’m incredibly grateful that Dramabeans exists.
So, in celebration of my book coming out this month on May 30, I’m offering a giveaway to Dramabeans readers! There will be two winners selected—both will win signed copies of my book, plus either the Healer or Goblin original soundtracks (two of my favorites!).
To enter, just answer this prompt in your comment below: Tell us about your favorite drama love triangle!
And if you want a copy of my book for yourself, giveaway be damned, you can pre-order through Amazon or Barnes & Noble.
Contest Rules:
- Leave a comment below telling us about your favorite drama love triangle.
- Post as many comment entries as you want, through Sunday, May 14, at 12:00 noon, Pacific Time. (Here’s a handy-dandy time zone converter, so you can figure out what that is in your local time.)
- We will email winners directly.

Reply 88. Because it never really felt like a love triangle. They didn't react with petty jealousy or ridiculous dramatics. They just let each other grow and change and accepted the outcome of that. The best part of it all is that their friendship was always the highest priority to each of them. That made the love feel natural and mature, which is fairly uncommon in kdrama love triangles. And unlike a lot of you other unlucky suckers, I was always rooting for the right couple lol.

Too many drama's I have watched and you know it's too difficult to choose one triangle-love from all of them.
But if you must to mention on of the epic triangle love story, it must be Jealousy Incarnation Jo Jung Seok, Gong Hyo Jin, Go Kyung Pyo. I can't imagine if I were in Pyo NaRi's feet! You have two amazing gentleman falling in love all over with you, yet you also love both of them at the same time. They have different charms that you can't compare to each other. Like why don't you two just combine yourself into one perfect man! But, life was never easy and NaRi must choose the one and only love for her. Despite all the confusion, "First love always win" really goes through with this drama. The way NaRi always care with HwaShin condition, like always, but she never considered it an affection of love in the first place. JungWon at the other hand, learned the way friendship always matter in life. And HwaShin learned.. how not to be a jerk in everybody's life XD.
When we look deep inside the drama, there are other triangle-love that looks cute for me. Chef-nim and the 2 mom-anchor! The way they overcome differences in love-life, it's truly indeed a true-love in their age!

Ji Eun Tak | Goblin | Grim Reaper
I think this qualifies as a love triangle. On the one hand, you have the everlasting, bittersweet love between Ji Eun Tak and Goblin (Kim Shin). On the other hand, you have the evercutesy bromance between Goblin and Reaper - sometimes they were even more adorable than the otp! Haha.

Many dramas tell us that fate will ALWAYS do something to get the couple together in the end.
Reply 1988 was more realistic.

Favorite drama love triangle: Nyang, Wang Yoo and TaHwan (Empress Ki) Up until now, I am questioning myself who our empress really loved. Did she really love the emperor? Did she really get over Wang Yoo? Was she really forever torn between two men and two countries?

The love triangle I enjoyed was the one in Protect the boss: Eun Seol, Ji Heon and Moo Won. The dynamic between the two cousins was so fun to watch and how each of them tried to conquist Eun Seol, who was a fierce woman. I laughed a lot with these three.

Stairway to Heaven.
heartwrenching classic. the drama ended with songjoo saying "perhaps, that person might have loved that girl more than me. but even though I say this, that doesn't mean that I loved her any less.[quoted from wikipedia]" taehwa definitely loved jungsuh more than songjoo did. he willingly gave up his life to donate his cornea to her, whose wish was to see songjoo one last time. songjoo & jungsuh may be the OTP, but my heart will always go out to taehwa. ?

Healer
I loved this charming love triangle, because it really wasn't a love triangle to begin with. Chae Young Shin was interested in the same person who was courting her and had no idea.
Yes, it was really funny to see Healer being jealous of himself, but at the same time there was no real angst, which I appreciate. It was also extremely satisfying since we knew there was no real competition and both of them will end up together. What would usually be angsty turned out to be really cute, because we knew.

Hello! My favorite K-drama love triangle is from The Lover and His Liar. After recently finishing it, this show quickly took its place in my Top 10 favorite K-dramas list! The show itself has some weak acting, but the writing is consistent, the editing is well done, and the directing and production of the show consisted of bright colors, and a joyous atmosphere that really made the show a breeze to watch. However, my favorite part was the relationship between Han Gyeol, So Rim, and Chan-Young. The relationship between So Rim and Han Gyeol was so sweet because they constantly relied on one another, and believed in each other, no matter what situation was occurring around them. Yet, between Chan-Young and So-Rim, Chan-Young was always on her side even though he knew So-Rim didn't feel the same way, and developed a really warm friendship and relationship as music professionals. But don't even get me started on the complex relationship between Han-Gyeol and Chan-Young! The two of them were bandmates but rivals in love and music, constantly feeling like they lacked with what the other had, polar opposites, envying each other while dreaming to be the other one at the same time. This love triangle was great because it was sweet, but angsty enough to make you bite your nails, but never felt saturated with unnecessary problems. Instead, it settled in your heart like a warm hot chocolate with a light cream, and will remain as a soft, sizzling romance I will fondly remember for a long time.

For me, it was Empress Ki. This is one of the best Kdramas I've watched, to date.
Based on the drama, Seung Nyang really loved Wang Yoo. But because of her need to seek revenge, she stayed with the Emperor. Even the last scene on the last episode, it was shown how she was thorn to choose who will give her a ride. (This is a scene for an episode where she is trying to escape, I think.)
Runners-up are Jealousy Incarnate (those immature fights were too cute to remember) and Goong (truly classic. i was rooting for Lee Yul back then).

for me, its gonna be baker king kim takgu. though takgu and yookyung were clearly leaning on each other since young it was yookyung and majun who understood each other's scars from childhood abuse inflicted by their own families. they nurse each others' wounds because they are so alike.
first drama i watched that the second male lead gets the girl and how it felt so bitter sweet at the same time.
takgu and yookyung realising they can't be together. its just so relatable and so painful at the same time.

The love triangle in "Love Story in Harvard" also happens to be one of my favorites. If you're into Endless Love, this is a drama that you should also watch (assuming you haven't seen it). The love triangle is very typical, but the main love team is very cute!

My most favourite love triangle in a Kdrama would be between Lee Jin-soo, Seo Eun-young and Kang Seung-yeon in Coffee House! In the beginning of the drama it wasn't that clear who was the OTP until in the middle we realised, Seung-yeon (who harboured a crush on Jin-soo), was an important catalyst to bring the OTP together. It was a peculiar kind of love triangle, without a 2nd female lead trying to get the guy or have a toxic level of jealousy towards the 1st female lead. I still love the drama to bits even till today because all the leads had so good chemistry!

Favorite kdrama love triangle: Yoon Yoon Jae, Sung Shi Won, and Kang Joon Hee. It was a complicated, messy triangle yet so real and true to life in its portrayal and showed the characters' feelings, actions and decisions in a relatable way.
There were two one-sided crushes involved. One of these crushes ended when Shi Won returned Yoon Jae's feelings and a happy ending ensued but Joon Hee and Yoon Jae were not meant to be from the beginning and Joon Hee's devotion was destined to only be an unrequited love. However, they remained friends, even after Joon Hee moved out and Yoon Jae got married with Shi Won. Despite the pain and heartbreak, these situations do happen and sometimes we are lucky and our feelings are returned when we confess but other times, we may decide to keep our secret and continue just being friends when we know it's not going to work out for us.
Another reason why I like this love triangle is due to it's quiet and subtle depiction of gay relationships. Though Joon Hee had his heart broken, the way the drama depicted his emotions and his love for Yoon Jae was beautiful. His feelings were not trivialized nor were they overdramatized either. I will always be grateful to the cast and crew of
Reply 1997 for showing me that Korean dramas are capable of telling a realistic story of gay relationships.

I am all for men who respect women and believe that it is the woman's ultimate decision on who she wants for a partner. It is why I believe that Strong Woman Do Bong Soon's love triangle with Ahn Minhyuk, In Gook Doo, and Do Bong Soon is one of the best love triangles I've ever seen.
Both Minhyuk and Gook Doo really love Bong Soon for who she is. They both respect her and they don't like her for her looks or any other superficial aspect, but for every part of her, both good and bad. She continues to remind them, especially Minhyuk, about her flaws (her superhuman strength). But neither of them see it as something that makes her less of a woman and love her for being herself.
Furthermore, although they do get jealous whenever it seems like the other one-upped them on relationship progress, they respect her decision on who she wants to ultimately choose. I was impressed at how Ahn Minhyuk, no matter how much it pained him, told her the truth that Gook Doo liked her -- normally in Kdramaland, the male would hide that kind of truth from the female lead. He told her that he liked her and would take a step towards her but it was ultimately her who had to make the choice.
I feel like I'm being redundant but I really want to emphasize that this quality in the men and this respect they have for women (who aren't their objects or trophies but rather people who have their own free will) is admirable.
Overall I really enjoyed Strong Woman Do Bong Soon because it delivered the message that women can be strong. Internal strength, not physical strength, is the strongest feature in Bong Soon. She shows compassion for the people and does things she believes is right. That is why the men love her and it is why I love this love triangle the most.
I won't deny that Ahn Minhyuk's eyes also are a factor, though XD

Tell us about your favorite drama love triangle!
That would be Sung Joon-Hye JIn-Shin Hyuk. I love these three. What captivates me the most of this love triangle is that even tho Hye Jin is so invested in SJ, she nevertheless is a good friend to SH. I love the jealous SJ but I love how he is also sure enough of her feelings for him to not allow her to sulk because of her bestfriend. SJ is the sweetest boyfriend too. Hye Jin on the other continues to be the sweet and caring friend as when they were young, always there to catch SJ. SH is one my fave third lead in kdrama. He is so giving and not at all clingy. He loves her but understands that she loves SJ, plus he is a worth opponent... bestselling author to boot!

just reading all the comment down make my heart goes weak so goes my thumb-like flying, and yes, reply 1988 love triangle was the most eye opener for me, like when you have so much opportunity but you have no confidence so the fate never tied your string with her because you seem so lazy to get your own ass up to get the girl..badum, fate gave her to the other part of the love triangle instead. the one who silently watching, carefully loving and smartly planning to win the girl heart just like how he played his favorite baduk-game......oh my heart.....T.T

Reply 1994's Trash Oppa-Na Jung-Chilbongie is my favorite drama love triangle. No other love triangle got me so involved in a drama. Dude, the fanwar was so intense I still have a lingering taste of it in my mouth. Both men were a perfect match for Na Jung and both are awesome in their own way but in the end Trash Oppa got the girl and half the viewers were left with broken hearts. Ouch! </3 I know my Chilbongie ship went titanic on me in the end but I must admit Reply 1994 is one of the few well-written love triangle in a drama. Writer-nim jjang!

I’m still catching up on Strong Woman Do Bong Soon, but I do like this love triangle of Do Bong Soon-Ahn Min Hyuk-Gook Doo. I like Do Bong Soon’s torch for Gook Doo, Gook Doo’s unrealized feelings for her (and jealousy towards Ahn Min Hyuk), Ahn Min Hyuk’s admiration (grudging or not, haha) for Do Bong Soon, Do Bong Soon’s growing feelings for Ahn Min Hyuk. It’s cute, hilarious, touching and bittersweet. I’m halfway through, and I have an idea of the ending already, but it’s still really something to watch how this love triangle unfolds.
My runner up love triangle would be (maybe because this was my first Kdrama, and you never really forget your first) MDBC’s Lee Yeong-Hong Raon-Kim Yoon Sung. Even if the OTP of Lee Yeong and Hong Raon was really strong—Lee Yeong was a very consistent character—he had his flaws and could not see Hong Raon's motivation at times—this was where Kim Yoon Sung stepped in and one could *feel* that maybe Raon needed this kind of love from the latter.

Second entry:
The first love triangle in Love Rain starring /Jang Geun-suk and Yoona was sweet where the best friends didn't let their love for the same girl ruin their friendship. Seo In-na did the noble idiot thing and let his best friend Lee Dong-wook date Yoon-hee even though he fell in love with her first. When it was discovered that he loved her and she cared for him, their little group of friends broke, with Seo In-Gook's character punching him very satisfyingly for Lee Dong-wook. Everything changes when the girl gets sick and plans to leave the country and confides in her original boyfriend because she doesn't want to hurt her true love. Again, another noble idiot move. But Lee Dong-wook does the right thing and tells Seo In-ha the truth about his love because they are still best friends. It takes 30 years for In-ha and Yoon-her to reconnect as older adults where they FINALLY can love each other, after 12 episodes in between which focus on their children who really had a less compelling love triangle themselves.

3rd and final entry:
I went back and forth about this one because it was mentioned right off the bat, but I have to echo many of the sentiments here, and give my favorite love triangle to Coffee Prince. I couple write an essay as to why, bust since I'm texting this from my phone, it will have to be brief.
Choi Han-kyul, Choi Han-sung, and Go Eun Chan. These guys have the same taste is girls as Choi Han-chul had a crush for more than a decade on Han-sung's serious girlfriend. Then Eun Chan comes around and Han-sung loves her as a girl and Han-kyul loves her as a guy. It's takes much longer for the latter to admit it though, for obvious reasons, but his older cousin gets it and bows out gracefully when Eun-Chan has reciprocal feelings. This drama pulled at the deepest feelings of love for an individual, not caring about gender. Just.So.Good.

The love triangle in these recent shows, Chicago Typewriter and the Lover and his Liar, are another two of my favorites. In Chicago Typewriter, between Se Joo, Seol, and Jin Oh, it mixes feelings from their past lives as comrades to their present selves. When there is a fan who was once a sharpshooter, a prodigious writer who is in a slump, and a ghost who never got to confess his love, the romantic lines between them would definitely cross. Until that moment where they can sort out their past, in order to focus on the present, then can they finally create their future. In the Liar and his Lover, between Han Gyul, So Rim, and Chan Young, you can't just help but fall in love with each of the characters and their flaws. When the sweet, star crossed lovers are interfered by the charming puppy/bassist (Chan Young), So Rim can realize that she can love Han Gyul even more, whether it is for all of his giggles, smiles, mistakes, and yes, even his lies.

One kdrama that I absolutely adore is High School: Love On because of the female lead. I kept waffling between which pairing to support, her with Woo-hyun or her with Sung-yeol. Kim Sae-ron is also the most adorable angel/angel-turned-human. The boys both bear emotional scars and their own dynamic makes this a love triangle worth following.

I'm gonna put out here one more: Sassy Go Go
Kang Yeon Doo - Kim Yeol - Seo Ha Joon
This love triangle was bittersweet. It was the classical rivalry between two best friends - which I usually hate because it usually ruins the friendship. However, this time was different. These two boys were able to talk it out. And they stayed friends! Yay!
Besides, Ji Soo was just breaking my heart. I did not get a second lead syndrom, but I get one rarely, so no surprise here. However, I was really moved and I was hurting for him. I also really liked how he found his way to confess (gummi bears scene) - it wasn't burdensome nor demanding, it was just a sweet and innocent confession of a friend who just wanted - needed to convey his feelings. He got it out of his system and the friendship survived.
So, I hope every second lead out there will learn from Seo Ha Joon and keep their friendship alive!

Jealousy Incarnate took the cake for me. I love how realistic was the show in potraying the conflict and relationship between Hwa-shin, Na-ri, Jung-won. Romance vs bromance. A roller coaster ride of life experience where no one left unscathed, but came out of it better and wiser. Funny, tragic and poignant at the same time, it's my favourite love triangle of all time.

The start of my love of the Reply series started with this wonderful drama about growing up with friends. It's such a touching story about its what like to experience loss and grow with a group of friends/romantic interests. While this Reply drama doesn't have the mystery of who the husband is, it's the best at showing genuine loss the Yoon siblings experiencing loss of parents and and Sung Shi Won experiencing the loss of her sister. The pain of their loss unites the three of them together because they and their families were close to each other from all four of their parents to now their kids.

Reply 1994: Chilbong, Sung Na Jeong, Seureki
This drama is my favorite installment of the Reply series. I watched this when I was in college in Korea similar to how each of our characters were in college. I love it because it definitely does the best of keeping the readers guessing as to who the husband, which Reply 1997 didn't do as well in. The lessons that the characters learn about love and finding what it means to love despite the difficulty matches the struggles of our generation to do the same despite being a generation apart from 1990s to 2010s. This drama started so many fan wars about who the husband was. I was on team Chilbong and I still wish the writer had gone that route because Chilbong's ending was so sad considering his lonely childhood and being the kid of divorced parents. Chilbong's ending was also random because it just paired him with a character who showed up for the first time in the closing moments of the drama. With that said, Na Jeong chose the one who she loved and the one who her family had grown up with. Although, I wish that Seureki had ended up with someone else, so he would grow as a person who can show romance, but mostly because it would give Chilbong and Na Jeong a happy ending and they just fit better.

Reply 1988: Taek, Sung Deok Sun, Jung Hwan
The most recent of the Reply series is the best at mixing both the friendships between not just the kids, but the entire family and the mystery of who the husband is. I really didn't know who the husband would be until it was revealed. I think there's a case for both to be the husband. Jung Hwan and Taek clearly both love Deok Sun. This was a case where I didn't really favor any of the two guys over the other. I wished them both a happy ending and I hope Jung Hwan is happy in Reply 1988 universe. Deok Sun was confused about who to date and she finally ended up choosing the one who makes her happy and that she loves, so it's a happy ending for her and Taek. However, I think Jung Hwan loved Deok Sun too and it was so hard to watch him stay away in order for his two friends to be happy together even if it meant he wasn't.

It was so sad seeing Kyung Lim lose out on her the guy she loved, so that she could watch her friend Jenny be happy. It was also equally sad to see Kyung Lim being a source of comfort for Jenny when her relationship with Min Woo wasn't going well. Kyung Lim provided to be a great friend as she helped her friend and romantic interest end up together even if she hesitated.

My favorite love triangle would be among Jung Hwan, Deok Sun, and Taek of Reply 1988.
Started the show believing that Jung Hwan would be the end game. It was so painful to watch him cry because he kept on blaming himself for not being courageous enough to confess his love with Deok Sun.
But then, Taek is such an amazing character. Behind his quiet personality is a man full of courage to protect his loved one.
Watching their love triangle is so satisfying. No exaggerated plot lines, no makjang-like story, just a natural and realistic story of love and friendship. Even though I'm #TeamJungHwan all the way, Taek and Deok Sun deserves each other.
Well, I believe Jung Hwan and I are meant to be. Who knows? LOL

Nonstop 2: Yang Dong Geun, Jang Nara, Jung Tae Woo
Two good friends, Jung Tae Woo and Yang Dong Geun, eventually come to conflicts because they both like Jang Nara. Dong Geun's story of liking Nara was so upsetting to watch because he already had a failed relationship, which made him hesitant to try with Nara. While Dong Geun was struggling, Tae Woo starts to develop feelings for Nara, which she doesn't return, but he eventually finds out Dong Geun likes Nara. This all adds to the tension in the group with Tae Woo eventually arguing with Dong Geun. Nara also grows more bold and pursues Dong Geun and they are such a cute couple that they are truly good together once he starts to pursue her too.

Nonstop 2: Jo In Sung, Jung Dabin, Kim Young Joon
This is another case where two great friends, Kim Young Joon and Jo In Sung face difficulty in their relationship because Young Joon like Jung Dabin, but she likes In Sung who doesn't like her that way. It created such angst to see Young Joon so down in the dumps and angry at In Sung despite him not having done anything wrong while Dabin is trying to show In Sung that she likes him. I think all of them are such great characters for eventually developing as stronger friends between the three of them. All of them are happy in the end with Young Joon and Dabin ending up together and In Sung being happy for them and getting married to someone else.

Rebel: Thief who Stole the People
I wish Mori would just reveal his feelings and then Ga Ryung would turn him down and end up with Hong Gil Dong. Then, Gil Dong and Mori would join sides and become friends/allies. Clearly, it hurts Mori to have Gil Dong have saved him countless times, which is why I think he doesn't pursue a relationship with Ga Ryung. Also, he must not feel worthy given what he has chosen to make of his life compared to someone like Gil Dong. But, redemption can be found so hopefully he makes the right choice and allies with Gil Dong.

Hyun Bin tries so hard to reject Young Eun's advances even to the point of getting angry, which is so unlike him. Meanwhile, Mong grows more dejected as Hyun Bin tries to bring the two of them together after Mong grows mad at him, but then Mong shows remorse for his actions towards his friend. Eventually, Hyun Bin's efforts succeed and Young Eun shows feelings for Mong after he ends up showing his love and caring for her.
