Book & OST giveaway: I Believe in a Thing Called Love

We’ve got a fun new giveaway for you from the author of upcoming YA novel I Believe in a Thing Called Love, which is about a drama-lover who employs romance tricks and tropes from her favorite K-dramas in an effort to jumpstart her love life (I’m sure we’ve all seen enough dramas to imagine how well that goes over). For a chance to win a signed copy of the book and a drama OST, enter below!

Here’s a message from author Maurene Goo:

Hi, everyone! You might remember that a few months ago javabeans and girlfriday were kind enough to interview me about my upcoming YA novel, I Believe in a Thing Called Love. Since the book is about a girl trying to snag a guy using the “steps” she finds in K-dramas, well, sharing this book with Dramabeans readers was a no-brainer. Not only that, javabeans and girlfriday were kind enough to consult and brainstorm with me so that I could make sure the K-drama facts were right and they helped me create the K-drama starter guide in the back of the book, as well.

And in the years that I took to write this book, I’ve learned about the incredible fandom through this website, and have become a newbie fan myself (I’ve watched K-dramas since forever but am a total lightweight when it comes to K-drama knowledge, and I’m in awe of all of you!). Basically, I’m incredibly grateful that Dramabeans exists.

So, in celebration of my book coming out this month on May 30, I’m offering a giveaway to Dramabeans readers! There will be two winners selected—both will win signed copies of my book, plus either the Healer or Goblin original soundtracks (two of my favorites!).

To enter, just answer this prompt in your comment below: Tell us about your favorite drama love triangle!

And if you want a copy of my book for yourself, giveaway be damned, you can pre-order through Amazon or Barnes & Noble.

Contest Rules:

  • Leave a comment below telling us about your favorite drama love triangle.
  • Post as many comment entries as you want, through Sunday, May 14, at 12:00 noon, Pacific Time. (Here’s a handy-dandy time zone converter, so you can figure out what that is in your local time.)
  • We will email winners directly.

Definitely the Coffee Prince dynamic with Choi Han Kyul,Go Eun chan and Choi Han sung ; mostly because the latter was never truly a threat ,I always knew who endgame was and the love triangle was never used as the device to prevent OTP from being together. Instead one was able to like or even love everyone involved and the fact that they both developed feelings for her made sense in the manner the story was told. Another big plus for me was how the original dynamic before Eun Chan came on the scene was Choi-Han Kyul- Han Yoo joo and Choi Han Sung . In the end it didn't like a love triangle exactly but more an entangling of hearts which was resolved in a very organic way where everyone's hearts just settled down and they were all able to get along.

Definitely, You who came from the stars! Cheon Song Yi, Do Min Joon, Lee Hee Kyung. I really want to consider this as of the best dramas in dramaland because of the concept that he's from the star and CSY isn't a damsel in distress but someone who has the guts and the girl power unlike other cliche dramas. And oh! Do I have to mention that the DMJ has been waiting for her all this time, oh a life of an immortal. LHK might be annoying at time but he supports the lead and thats really cool for a kdrama.

I would to be all-rounded so this time it's going to be a taiwanese drama. It started with a kiss! Xiangqin|Zhishu|Xiang Feng. I watched this first before the other remakes and I find very comedic and something that will be etched in our minds. Plus her exaggerated stupidity is so top notch and how she chases the guy. Normally in dramaland it's always the guy who chases the girl. The wits are something you'll never forget!!

I just have to mention this thai drama although I spent almost all of my life watching kdrama but whats the harm of something different right? Wanna be Superstar |Wannueng|Win|Meedee. A story of Wannueng who wants to be a superstar from scratch, literally, with her out of the world enthusiasm, extremely bad acting and too persistent. She just have to become a superstar even though her parents already stopped sponsoring her and even her house was sold. And there comes Win, a retired superstar but very famous, he will be the one to guide her on her path to becoming a superstar. He's the one who continuously believed in her when no one did. More points for his handsomeness and the absurdity when she sneakily lived in her not-so-home and she was thought by the main guy as a ghost. He was so freaking scared!! And well Meedee, he's someone who likes her ever since their college days but he's just not it.

Na Bong-sun | Kang Sun-woo | Shin Soon-ae from Oh My Ghostess!

This is probably one of the most unique love triangles in the K-drama world because one of the persons involved is actually a ghost! There was even a time I sooo wanted Soon-ae and Sun-woo to end up together, but reality-wise it wasn't possible. Arghh the conflict ?

I generally dislike love triangles because someone always gets hurt and second leads are usually a real pain.
Therefore, my favorite love triangle is the one in Kill Me Heal Me.
Oh Ri Jin - Cha Do Hyun - Shin Se Gi

I don't think there was anyone who didn't love Shin Se Gi - he was very attractive but at the same time playful and childllike.
Cha Do Hyun broke my heart with his pain and well - he was the original personality...
The great thing about this triangle is how both Cha Do Hyun and Shin Se Gi were a part of one person, so even though Shin Se Gi left at the end, Oh Ri Jin still ended up with him through Cha Do Hyun.
And that is the best thing for me. Virtually no one got hurt.

Cha Do Hyun wasn´t really an original, he was the replacement of the original. he, too, had an "original" himself. But yes, it was a great consolation that in the end not only did we get romance and a solution, but also a bromance between the two personas and their acceptance of each other.

I definitely liked Oh My Ghost's love-triangle because the lines were all blurred. They could have handled the ending waaaay better especially since they DID bring up the issues of whom he actually fell for, but I liked how both the female leads were absolutely lovable and had their own chemistry with the male lead. I mean, if I as a girl couldn't decide which heroin was better, I can't imagine what he must have gone thorugh

I don't know if this counts as my favourite, but if I spent hours/days/months thinking about it and crying enough tears that would put Han river to shame, I guess it deserves a mention. Yeah, you Reply 1988. God, if you were a guy I would have castrated you.
Jung hwan × Deok seon × Taek.
I loved the characters to bits, which is why I can't hate Taek for getting the girl. I'm happy that he's happy. This triangle ripped me apart though. The suspense of not knowing and just hoping and praying that the one you like gets the happy ending with the girl was just...phew.

i like love triangles that doesn't make me choose one male lead over the other and one where the guys are respectful of the females feelings and although there are a few I'm gonna go with reply 1988 because while my heart ached for Jung Hwan, i was okay with her ending up with Taek

Reply 1997. Shi-won, Yoon-Jae and Joon-hee.

While the more obvious triangle was between Shi-won and the brothers, I think this triangle was more compelling. The two boys were in love, but couldn't find the way to make things work. For Yoon-Jae, he failed to start his relationship with Shi-won due to timings (twice :( ) and Joon-hee just couldn't find the courage to ignore society's standards. Shi-won knew about Joon-hee's "condition" but just supported him. She also knew about Yoon-jae's feelings, I mean, she even received a ring, but she doesn't know how to interpret her own heart.

In a way, all three of them were aware of their feelings, but just didn't know how to put it to words, and to reconnect and come to terms with their own hearts and find their own happily-ever-afters after so many years, I just loved it.

It's possible, being the first in the series, the relationships were still not that convoluted and maybe why I really liked this.

Love triangles abound in Korean dramas, but I rarely find myself torn between the love interests. The end game is usually so clear. There is only one drama where I felt like the choice wasn't clear until the very end. That drama is Reply 1988. In my eyes this is a true love triangle because the boys loved each other just as much as they loved Deok Sun. Even though Choi Taek was the right choice for her, my heart will always ache for the pain it caused Jung Hwan.

There's a few favorite drama love triangle. Which one to choose? lol. Hmm..my favorite might have to be Reply 1988. Teak and Jung-Hwan were too good to be true. They were real friends and both their feelings were sincere. Both went about it in different ways that was realistic. That's why I like it most - that their feelings developed naturally and the way it was shown was something that can happen in real life. I totally felt the pain of Jung-Hwan's almost confession and had a squeal fest when Teak kissed Duk-Sun. In the end, they were true friends and Duk-Sun was one lucky girl to have two awesome guys to choose from.

This one's a toughie. I gave this a lot of thought and realized that there are some (okay, many) second leads that have caught my heart but I can't think of many love triangles that brought me to my knees. The ones I can think of are oldies, with raw feels that just killed, such as Que Sera Sera and What Happened in Bali. Boy oh boy were those love triangles painful. In recent memory though I have to give it to Producers, which managed to produce not just a really effective love triangle (between the characters played by Gong Hyo-jin, Cha Tae-hyun and Kim Soo-hyun) but really a love rectangle that was good to watch. The pining all over the place! I'd honestly include Jealousy Incarnate over here (it was very delicious to watch) but that just frustrated me to no end, so I'll leave it out of the list.

A love triangle that had me rooting helplessly for the second lead was Goong. Shin was such a jerk and you couldn't help but have your heartstrings tugged at Yul's situation. Chae-kyung was a bit of an over-the-top character but Yoon Eun-hye managed to pull it off.

Emergency Couple love triangle between Song ji-hyo, Choi Jin-hyuk and Lee Pil-mo's characters :) I believe this drama in general kicked off recognition for TVN and their continuous production of good dramas i.e. Reply 1997, Marriage not dating, Liar Game, Signal, Another Oh Hae young, Reply 1988 (and my past favourites from the network, The Wedding Scheme and I Need Romance)
Emergency couple should definitely be a contender, purely just for its laugh out loud moments and the cute bickering moments between the main couple :)

It has to be Reply 1988's Duk Seon, Taekkie, ang Jung Hwan. ❤️ I watched both installments that came before 1988 and my heart was pretty bruised after rooting for Chilbongie in 1994. So I came into 1988 a little bit cautious. I rooted for Taekkie right off the bat, BUT I TOLD MYSELF I SHOULD KNOW BETTER. REMEMBER CHILBONGIE. So in the earlier episodes I actually made myself root for Jung Hwan because how can I make the same Chilbongie mistake? But later into the show I found myself loving Taekie and Duk Seon more and more. But then Duk Seon was so endearing that I just STARTED ROOTING FOR HER. I just want her to be happy. Whoever Duk Seon wants, I will support her all the way. But the show decided to give me the sweetest surprise of all. I WAS TOTALLY ELATED TO FIND OUT IT'S TAEKKIE ? I felt for Jung Hwan but I loved how he realized it was his fault that he did not get the girl. And I love the part where Jung Hwan and Taekkie remained friends despite everything that happened ❤️

Answer Me 1988.

i sort of knew that taekie would be the one since bogummy was the more popular actor (sorry for cheating this way ?) but anything is possible in dramaland. i found myself rooting for junghwan as he protected & loved deoksun in such subtle ways. but his never ending procrastination & indecisiveness were deadly. he didn't grab hold of the opportunities available while taekie did. his final noble idiotic act was admirable yet so painful, because it felt like he did wrong to himself. ?

Another (sentimental) favorite is Geum Jan Di, Gu Jun Pyo, and Yoon Ji Hoo. How can I not write about the one that kickstarted my 7-year drama watching career? In my teens, I watched (and went crazy over) Meteor Garden when it was aired in my country. Even then, I totally boarded the second lead ship. So when I watched the kdrama version BoF, I naturally fell for Ji Hoo. After some time, I rewatched Meteor Garden and found myself actually changing ships. The more mature me now thinks Lei is so lame and San Cai was right about choosing Dao Ming Si. But that's not the case with BoF. I rewatched it a number of times, and I STILL BELIEVE JAN DI SHOULD HAVE CHOSEN JI HOO. How can you not like someone like Ji Hoo? How???

I loved the love triangle in Mirror of the Witch, when it was between Yeon Hee, Heo Jun, and Poong Yeon. Although its not the most popular show or choice on the block, the fight for a cursed princess between the poor scholar and the responsible guard seemed to mirror the fact that even a princess could turn into a witch, while obtaining love from both sides.

I am not a second lead shipper and pretty much loathe triangles. BUT What Happened in Bali left me completely torn. Just when I had a grasp on the romance it would flip and then flip again, and I loved it. it was all so messy and complicated and delicious at the same time. I've spent many hours tearing my hair out over this one. Mys sister and I now refer to it as "The one that can't be named" after all the torment it put us through. Whom did she love? Did she love both (my opinion)? I like to think that in an alternate universe she ended up happily with both of them. Although, are they the type of people who could be happy?

The love triangle that I loved from a kdrama definitely has to be Lee Do Hyun, Oh Ri Jin and Shin Se Gi from Kill Me, Heal Me. Both males were swoony in their own ways from Lee Do Hyun’s kindness to Shin Se Gi’s intensity. I really loved how both were the complete opposites, yet they shared the same love for Oh Ri Jin. I also loved how Oh Ri Jin really cared for them by trying to keep an eye on Shin Se Gi so he wouldn't get in trouble and how she was trying to help Lee Do Hyun overcome his dissociative identity disorder. At the end I felt that Oh Ri Jin not only helped heal Lee Do Hyun, but also in a way Shin Se Gi. At least the good thing about this love triangle is the payout since Oh Ri Jin technically ended up with both since Shin Se Gi is a part of Lee Do Hyun.

Thinking about this more...Ok this is old, but one of my favorite love triange is from Autumn in My Heart! What can I say, Won Bin! When I first watched it, I only rooted for the main couple--grew up together as siblings, forcelly separated, brought back together and then...well we know the ending, still together in the after. So how could there be any room for Han Tae Seok? I didn't appreciate him until the second time I watched that drama. Second look at the second lead on the second watch! What I like about that love triangle is that there was so much love! Yoon Joon-seo, Yoon Eun-soo and Han Tae Seok really showed their love for one another. Some second characters or love triangles are just there to annoy and be petty, keep the story going. In Autumn in My Heart, the love triangle is heartwrenching because the two males really loved Eunseo, and Han Tae Seok, although there were a few scenes that were a bit too forceful, really was good to Eunseo, and Joonseo. I still remember his line to Eunseo about letting him care for her, and she will never have to see him again. Won Bin was amazing I don't know how I missed him the first time! Plus, seeing Han Tae Seok alone at the end to close the drama...heartbreaking! He was a good friend til the end. I guess I like love triangles where I actually like the second lead and can feel for him, which is not that often!

Coffee prince : Go Eun-chan/ Choi Han-kyul/Choi Han-sung.
Mainly because no one's heart was broken for long and they all ended up with someone. It didn't feel like they were just pairing the second leads off either. I felt like they belonged together.I was totally rooting for all of them. Han-sung's love for Eun-chan was gradual and the way he looked at her made me feel all warm inside. The way Han-kyul looked at her made my heart tremble. Best of all Eun-chan didn't string the second lead along.
Protect The Boss: Cha Ji-heon/ Noh Eun-seol/Cha Mu-won. This love triangle was just hilarious and I could just enjoy the jealous shenanigans because I knew everyone got paired off. That hair grabbing fight between the guys had me in stitches.

I really hate it when best friends fall for the same girl. Nothing should interrupt my bromance. However I liked how things were handled in these shows.
Because it's the first time: Yoon Tae-oh / Han Song-yi /Seo Ji-an.
This one kind of tore my heart. This was all too painful and real. But for once the second lead got the girl. I loved how friendship came first to all the leads.

Sassy go go: Kang Yeon-doo /Kim Yeol /Seo Ha-joon
Again friendship came first. I loved how the guys never fought over the girl. They found a way to work it out. Though Ha-joon really melted my heart with those shy smiles.

Ooh, Because It's the First Time! Thanks for pointing that one out, I am so with you, thought it was handled phenomenally! I really thought they were going to go the "usual" route and have her figure out that actually she's loved Tae-oh all along, she doesn't really love Ji-an, etc. I'm not saying there is something wrong with that, I've loved it in other dramas and it's felt right there, but here, for the vibe of the show, I think it would have been wrong. I actually love that Song-yi and Ji-an ended up together, what they felt for each other felt real and right for where they were at in the show and in the character's time of life. It felt like this was a world that was going to keep on going and maybe they'd still be together a few years from now, or maybe not, maybe a few years down the line she and Ji-an have reached a natural conclusion and she actually does fall for Tae-oh. But how they portrayed the characters up till then, it needed to be Song-yi and Ji-an. And I love that Tae-oh ultimately supported them, he cared more about his friends than himself.

Ah, this whole post is killing my typically lurking nature! Thanks for dragging me out :)

I would like to mention Flower Boy Next Door. Oh Jin-Rak (Kim Ji-Hoon) might not be among the popular SLS instigators, but in his defence, the poor guy had to face off against a dancing Yoon Shi-yoon in a panda suit!

No matter how much I loved Enrique and his cheerful energetic act (the panda dance, guys!), and no matter how much I enjoyed the romance with Go Dok-mi and his approach to get her out of her solitary world, Oh Jin-Rak still managed to create a love triangle between him, Go Dok-mi and me.

Enrique made me smile tenderly at times, but Oh Jin-Rak was one of the first K-drama characters to actually make my heart race.

He could be yelling at his bro(mance) Go Kyung-pyo in one scene, and turn into a speechless, giggling dork in the next scene as soon as Go Dok-mi (Park Shin-hye) appeared. He left cartons of milk with heartwarming post-its at her door, because he felt like that was the only way he could express his love without scaring her off or risking rejection. While Enrique literally barged in, Oh Jin-Rak waited patiently for her to come out whenever she felt ready to do so.

He did not get the girl in the drama because he did not act upon his feelings right away, while Enrique did. Normally I would agree with that logic, but in this case I have to disagree.

I personally struggle to get out of my comfort zone, and when I do, it is usually because of a Jin-Rak, whereas an Enrique only makes me retreat even more. The same goes in the romance department, because I prefer a guy that is not as direct as Enrique.

And yes, I am an absolute sucker for grumps with a heart of gold.
