Lee Shi-young, Kim Young-kwang offered roles in MBC action-thriller Lookout

I was excited to hear that Two Weeks director Sohn Hyung-seok would be coming back with another thriller, titled Lookout, and am further excited now that Lee Shi-young (My Beautiful Bride) is considering one of the lead roles—she’s pretty badass, and does great in strong thrillers. Kim Young-kwang (The Man Living in Our House) has received the offer for the male lead, and is reportedly considering as well.

Lookout is described as a satisfying action thriller with fantasy elements. The story features characters who have lost loved ones to crime, tearing apart their everyday lives, who come together to uphold justice and fight the crime that the police haven’t been able to crack down on. PD Sohn had me on the edge of my seat throughout Two Weeks—man did he know how to sustain pounding suspense—which also involved characters going vigilante when the system failed them, so I’ll cross my fingers for more exciting thrills this time around.

Lee Shi-young’s prospective role is the lead character named Jo Suji, a former Olympic shooter and ex-detective in the violent crimes department; in the current-day storyline, she’s a member of the group of civilian lookouts. Kim Young-kwang is up to play an ambitious prosecutor, Jang Do-han, who “is sharpening his knives for revenge” and gradually becomes “monstrous” in his thirst for vengeance.

Lee Shi-young reportedly felt the character was one she could easily approach, and I can certainly see her playing a fierce character determined to mete out justice. She’s been getting a lot of love these days due to her variety projects (Baek Jong-won’s Three Great Emperors, Real Men), but she’s also a charismatic actress who always pulls me into her characters, so I hope she takes the role. Kim Young-kwang is growing on me, having warmed up considerably through his sweet character in The Man Living in Our House, though I much prefer him as nice guys rather than ambitious, cold ones.

The script won an award in an open drama-writing contest last year, and will be written by rookie writer Kim Soo-eun. Lookout is scheduled to follow MBC’s currently airing Monday-Tuesday drama, Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People, and premieres in May.

Kim Young-kwang career has begun to take off with some very solid performances lately. He shouldn't risk it by doing a project with a mediocre - poor actress. Casting tells you a lot about a production. If they don't do the basics well, it's unlikely that the show will succeed.

I beg to differ. I think that he has done well in most of his dramas. A natural actor.

I think he's pretty solid compared to many of his peers. I should say however that I've only seen him in The Man Living in Our House, so, yeah.

Agreed. He's super cute and has the best proportions ever - literally everything looks good on him. Other than that, though, his acting is mediocre. Nothing inspiring.

So is Lee Shi Young the mediocre-poor actress here.?

He wasn't even that good in The Man living in our House. Too many weird facial expressions and the way he emotes isn't that great either. Only because Nan Joo Hyuk is even worse than him it wasn't really an issue.

This is interesting. I didn't expect people to dislike KYK this much. I actually thought that Lee Soo Hyuk was pretty good as well in TMLiOH. Art really is subjective.

Between him and Lee So Hyuk, the latter probably better than the former. I kinda formed an allergy with his acting from D-day, he has that strange facial expressions. I dont know if ppl loves him in Man Living In Our House since I just watched few episodes only.

KYK is good, but same as you I'd prefer soohyuk so much more than him.
for those who said shiyoung is poor actress probably never actually watch her drama. for my own opinion, I'd like to see shiyoung acts with certain ajushi that would give some good chemistry, not a younger actor.

1

Or we have and hence the comment.

Yeah, sorry. She really isn't very good. Pretty though.

I think otherwise, for me Lee Shi Young is better than Kim Young Kwang in term of acting.
But it doesn't mean I hate Kim Young Kwang. I find him so comfortable to watch. The way he looks at his partner in dramas (D-Day, 13 Bucket List, The Man That Living in Our House, Good Doctor) make me feel warm, loved and protected. That's why, despite the bad plot or low rating I still watch those drama for him.

I never discussed Lee Soo Hyuk, who I think is naturally very talented but untrained.

He's not my KYK. I don't want to date him.

As far as LSY goes, she's pretty. And apparently a very good athlete. We'll give her that!

Lee Shi-young is alright, but she's constantly taking very similar roles. I don't really want to see her in this drama for that reason.

Kim Young-kwang, on the other hand, is a terrible actor. I'm shocked at how he's landing these lead roles. He's yet to have one good performance, even after multiple lead roles, and isn't even a very popular star in Korea.

I'm aware of how shady the entertainment business is, but this kind of stuff is ridiculous really. He has nothing going for him. There are plenty of attractive actors in Korea that can actually act.

Technically speaking, he's developing into a good actor. I understand the strong response, though. He has a unique style - and I could see where it might not be everyone's cup of tea. I expect him to move over to film increasingly. Quirky actors find a strong home there.

I don't consider his performances quirky nor his style unique. He's bland, lacks a screen presence, and is terrible at emoting believably. If he can't do well in dramas where the standards are actually lower, I don't see how he's going to find a home in movies.

Here's hoping that Lee Shi Young gets a good meaty role here. Her last project that I watched was My Beautiful Bride. While I enjoyed that show, she was criminally under utilised there. While billed as lead, there was practically no arc for her char there.

LSY hwaiting!

Hope she accepts this drama, and I wish better leading man.

Because she was a part of main leads originally,. That show honestly can work well even without her because Kim Moo Yeol alone was superb. If i were the writer of MBB, I will not even create her character in that drama from the beginning. I believe she had done better job in other projects, so I am willing to give her the chance.

I'm rooting for her too! It's great to see her in action roles because she has a background that makes her great for hard stunts and fighting, but often those roles lack depth and I think she can handle a bit more. Either way I love watching her do action though

Yes new drama for Lee Shi Young, but Kim Young Kwang again? Damn that guy is not even that good but it's his third time up for leading role, i mean there are many talented actors better than him out there that never play a lead like Kang Haneul, etc . But end the end i'm probably gonna watch it for the story and LSY

Oh no Kang Ha Neul will be a great and much better choice. I can see him and Lee Shi Young.

Kim Young Kwang should just stay playing a kind and sweet hero role type. I cannot see him more than that. The industry is not lack of talents.

I don't mind Kim Young Kwan, I first saw him in D Day and I survived his character( and a whole lotta others) in Can We Get Married so I'm good.

I think he should play lovable and happy guys for a while, Yoon Sang Hyun type of characters, or play up the big, earnest doofus you can't help but root for. Just enough until his natural deuche aura recedes.

When lee Si-young didn't take up the lead role on Voice, I was really dissappointed, but seeing how the show is faring recently I think she made a better decision. Hope this is a better thriller with a tight plot and really hope that her role will be little more meatier than the one in My beautiful Bride.
Can't wait to see her in a badass role.

BTW I am little surprised with the hate for her in this thread.

Seriously? I think she made the wrong decision of rejecting Voice since the drama is now the highest-rated OCN drama of all time. And honestly, it is the only drama airing right now that got me interested aside from TWY.

well, I beg to differ. I couldn't make it through Voice bcoz of the glaring plot holes. All these stupidities and still they dare to call it a thriller. It is such a waste of resources and talents. They had everything like a unique plot and better actors, only to be wasted. I am glad that she didn't take the offer, it wud have been painful to watch her in this mess.

LSY please decline. Good lawds is she ever being type cast. I swear she's played this role like 3 times straight now. Golden Cross, My Beautiful Bride and even before those two, Wild Romance, was some version of this same character (the previous two more so than the latter). Omo I now remember Poseidon with Shi-Won which was basically this character. She a talented versatile actress. I would love to see her in a rom-com or even a melo (without her playing some cop or bodyguard caught in some scheme and must bring down the big bad(s) or rich and powerful.

Being the minority here that likes both actors...Have a very weak spot for Lee Shi Young thanks to Wild Romance...Seen the script won an award so looking in a positive way at it,even if it's written by a newbie,it can give some fresh pumb rather than thinking it will go south...The only thing is that i kinda sense LSY being typecasted...

I'm in the minority with you. I'm not upset with the pairing. Also, it makes sense that LSY likes playing strong characters. She is an amateur boxer and is highly competitive when she appears on variety shows (check her out on Running Man). So, yeah, given these facts I can't see her changing that up easily.

I'm surprised that she's getting panned. I think LSY is a good but not great actress. KYK's acting is okay enough not to be a bad distraction. But like someone else mentioned, he does have this natural douche aura which I'm worried about. I love Two Weeks and the plot sounds amazing, so I'm in!

I like LSY. She was good in My Beautiful Bride. KYK, although he may not be the best actor, I'll be looking forward to see him in small screen again. I liked him in TMLIOH. After all, lots of actors managed to improve their acting gradually. I'll give him a chance and reserve further judgment once the drama airs.
