Stepping on land mines and stripping on airplanes in Missing 9’s latest teaser

In a last-minute round of promos, more posters and a second teaser for MBC’s Missing 9 have been released. And it’s left me so confused because the tone of the teaser conflicts with all of the previous buildup for the redesigned drama. Originally touted as a thriller-mystery, Missing 9 will depict how nine plane crash victims become engaged in a savage battle for survival on an uninhabited island.

Jung Kyung-ho plays a has-been idol band leader, and Baek Jin-hee plays his rookie stylist. Jung Kyung-ho’s management agency, Legend Entertainment, and some other of his more successful labelmates are onboard the plane with them when it crashes. But the story of their life on the island is told months later by the only known survivor, Baek Jin-hee. The previous poster that was released talked about an unidentified corpse, and the first teaser had an spectacularly suspenseful vibe which made me excited for some murder-mystery action. But this newly released teaser has thrown me for a loop.

It starts off with Jung Kyung-ho’s fall from glory, showing flashes of him getting into a police car, throwing a tantrum on set, and drinking soju like a pro. Then we see him crying crocodile tears while apologizing to his Chinese fans. After his stylist is introduced, it’s clear that he doesn’t like her, and he orders that she be fired immediately.

Despite all that, as soon as they realize they’re stranded on an island, his approach toward her changes 180 degrees. Telling her to just believe in him, he starts to kindle a fire and chop up wood, only to fail and end up stepping on a land mine. But like a leopard can’t change his spots, Jung Kyung-ho’s spoiled celebrity attitude shows as he continues to yell about his unlucky streak after encountering numerous frustrations.

Throughout, clever hashtags like “#BesidesPopularity_DidYouHave_AnythingElseToLose?” punctuate his adventure. At the end, the group discusses their situation, wondering whether they really are the only survivors. Baek Jin-hee asks Jung Kyung-ho, “We’ll probably come out of here alive, right?” And he replies, “Let’s believe that we will, together until the end. Okay?”

In contrast with the new teaser, the new official posters have kept consistent with the chilling, desperate atmosphere that I was drawn to initially. In the first, Baek Jin-hee stares straight into the camera with grave eyes while Jung Kyung-ho is sprawled on his back, unconscious in front of her. The caption reads: “I believe that we’ll leave here alive.” The second looks like a news clipping with information on the plane crash and its victims. Its headline says, “‘The missing 9…’ The investigation for the hidden truth begins.” Both look promising, so I’m hoping the drama will stay dark and foreboding as promised, perhaps with interspersed bits of gallows humor instead of going the wacky comedy route.

MBC’s upcoming drama Missing 9 starts airing this Wednesday on January 18.

While this one was indeed hilarious and Jung Kyung Ho always delivers on the comedy part the teasers at the end WLFKBJ are really dark and think somehow that will be more telling about the show...Quite excited about it!

I'm watching for the answer to the mystery that is their matching beige/brown/white color scheme outfits.
Airplane dress code??

Subway sponsored the outfits; each article of clothing contains a hidden pocket, in which contains a life saving subway sandwich, the wrapper also expands as a floatation device. Sandwiches can be used as monetary value, the one to gain the most sandwiches will be deemed Lord of Subway Island.

Subway will find it's way here, I promise you, no one escapes Subway.

Subway can save lives just like how it did in Goblin :P

Maybe they can have an epilogue at the end of the finale of Missing 9....the island being redeveloped to a holiday resort or something like that WITH a Subway Outlet on it ! ;)

They start to improvise, and come up with a new Subway deserted island menu:

Shark and Cheese
Black Forest Bug Salad
Wild Mushroom Teriyaki
Italian A.N.T.
Cold Cut Coconut Salad

I am still so curious as to the matching wardrobes. You think they could have added a bit more diversity to the clolthes so it was so darn conspicuously matchy. Everyone is so beige!!! Better to stay camouflaged on the beach!

In the special they released, the director said the dress code was intentional and we would have to watch the show to find out the reason.

OMG, this whole thing was one big "survival" variety show right? With the Na PD-like director grinning behind a slew of hidden camera while saying, "Yes, bash his head and steal his fish, good girl!"

Maybe they changed to the same colour code to blend in with the surroundings. To camouflage when theres savage animals attack them. Just a wild guess.

Maybe their goal is to collect tints and colors?
The one who ends up with the most colorful outfit by day X is deemed the sole survivor.

For some reason, I'm really looking forward to this. Maybe cause I'm tired of all the medicals and saeguk's we've been bombarded with this year or I just need a refreshing landscape (probably both). I hope this one surprises me!

Is it just me, or does this drama look pretty big-budget? Has this drama been pre-produced or is it live?

I think they'll have a lot of comedic moments after the crash until they find the corpse. Or they will have a lingering ominous feeling throughout the drama.

I was more excited for this show to be thrilling and mysterious, but Jung Kyung-ho is awesome at being funny too.

It's mostly an interview with some of the cast members. Introduction to the drama and its characters and the key points of the story. Some behind-the-scenes too.

The special episode was okay, not a must-watch. I learned a bit more about the actors and the show, but I don't think it took away too much suspense. I don't think they mentioned the corpse.

Jung Kyung Ho had me laugh/cry at one point from one of his BTS moments.

Thanks for the info, Cocoboo! I am always quite hesitate to watch the so-called special episodes (there are getting more lately too). I've watched the so-called special episode of Goblin but I fast forward more on it cos I realised that it is only a summary of what we have watched so far (Zzz~~), with a little bit of BTS at the end of the episode ....

Being stranded on an island is one of my biggest fears... facial hair growth, greasy hair, sweaty pits... I'm just thankful I don't have hair on my legs, so I don't have to worry about waxing. lol. I always say, I'd rather be caught in a zombie attack than be stranded in a deserted place. at least with the zombie apocalypse, I already know I'll be the first one to get attacked; according to a Buzzfeed quiz, I'd be part of the first wave of victims. T_T

on a more related note, I'm interested but I won't be tuning in until the last episode has been released and subbed.

It won't be too bad though because having a stylist on the island is an in-universe explanation for why everyone is still so attractive, in an artfully-dishevelled kinda way. Sure, there's only dirt for eyeliner, but at least there's a professional to apply it for you.

Omg! I never thought about being stranded on an island like that. I suffer from pcos and hirsutism, i wont even last two days! But Buzzfeed quiz did say that i will be the lone survivor if there was a zombie apocalypse, i guess that's a win. Though i am not sure if i want to survive without my parlour lady. :P

Out of the couple of new/upcoming mystery thrillers....I'm more interested in Voice and Missing 9 than Innocent Defendant cos I'm worried of boring legal courtroom trials.....and I wonder if Missing 9 have the element of romance or is it wholly on suspense/mystery thrill ??

So far Voice is not bad, but I'm a little afraid of its repetitive case for every episode (meaning the cases are more or less the same with Lee Ha Na at the call centre listening to the sounds/voices and poor Lee Hyuk running around outside to find the various victims)....

Missing 9 was one of the worst written stories I've ever seen. Nothing makes sense. Illogical to the max. I tried to give it a chance but only lasted until episode 8. 5+ guys could not handle one psycho, just kill him or cut off his legs. Ridiculously they knew he killed and still let him roam freely. The character I hate the most is the weak Mr. Tae lying because afraid of getting hurt by Tae Ho.
