Nam Joo-hyuk offered lead in tvN’s Bride of the Water God

This would be quite the leap for Nam Joo-hyuk: He has been offered the lead in a high-profile tvN drama project called Bride of the Water God 2017, based on a manhwa of the same name (sans the 2017). He has not been confirmed, as initial reports misstated, but cable station tvN did state that he has been offered the role of the lead, water god Ha-baek.

The original story is set in a fantasy world where a water god is offered young women sacrifices by the inhabitants of a village that has been plagued by many years of drought. One sacrifice becomes his bride, and complications ensue. The drama is calling itself a spinoff version rather than a direct remake; it plans to keep the characters of the original while reworking the setting to a modern one, set in Seoul.

I might normally be wary of altering the story that much, but not with this production team, whose credits read like a list of personal favorites: Writing is Jung Yoon-jung of the acclaimed Misaeng and whimsical fantasy-romance Arang and the Magistrate, while directing is PD Kim Byung-soo, whose style I loved in thoughtful modern relationship drama Bubblegum, swashbuckler Three Musketeers, cerebral time-traveler Nine, and time-traveling romance Queen Inhyun’s Man.

Nam Joo-hyuk is doing wonderfully at the moment in MBC’s campus coming-of-age romance Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-ju, and I like him more in that show than I’ve ever liked him before—he’s exuberant, funny, and adorably devoted. Still, I’m pretty surprised to hear him as a potential lead for this project, because he’s still very young—both in age (nearly 23) and experience, debuting as a model in 2013 and as an actor with 2014’s Surplus Princess, where he was cute but very green. He was fine as a puppy-doggish sidekick in Cheese in the Trap, but his weakest moment was in last year’s Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo, where I thought he just couldn’t pull off the emotion or seriousness of the role. I find him better playing boyish, sweet characters so I’m not sure what to expect if he ends up headlining this drama. I can imagine fans of the manhwa will have a lot of thoughts about this!

Bride of the Water God will air on tvN, though it has not yet been scheduled.

I've been waiting for news about Bride of the Water god casting for such a looooong time.
They made changes with the setting of the story, so they'll probably be making other changes too. If they're thinking of making it into a lighter youth drama vibe, then Nam Joo Hyuk would be a sensible choice, I mean he has the looks and he's a rising star. But if they still wanted to go for the heavier and more dramatic storyline, then these actors would be probably better to play Ha Baek.
Lee Soo hyuk
Kim Woo bin
Jang Geun suk
Lee Jun ki
Joo Ji hoon
and if dreams do really come true, Kang Dong Won.
I'd always picture Ha Baek to be tall, lean and willowy. And of course, divinely beautiful. His character can be cruel and hard and as a god he is arrogant and haughty. But he is also very loving to Soah. He'll be making some difficult choices as the story progresses, so the actor needs to be able to have the ability to portray his struggles. Those 6 actors I believe have mastered the art of a being a chadonam. But they can also switch within a blink of an eye and turn on the charm and adorableness like no other. I believe Lee Soo Hyuk needs to be a lead now. He's got enough experience being a second lead and Gwi proves that he can deliver more aside than just being an eye candy. Kim Woo Bin needs no more verification. I just want to see him soon in my screen. I miss Jang Geun Suk too, and I want him to have a drama that can showcase his talents and acting range. Lee Jun Ki will no doubt be stellar in it, and he's really perfect as a Korean divinity. Joo Ji Hoon's Shin from Goong reminds me so much of Ha Baek. The manhwa Shin is basically Ha Baek in modern clothes so it's pretty interesting (although far fetched) to see him play Ha Baek. Kang Dong Won have always been Ha Baek in my mind ever since I started reading BotWg.
I haven't really thought that much of who's going to play Soah, I'll probably have to start now.

I disagree, I think he's a shockingly talented fella; maybe you've just typecast him in your head as suiting nothing but babies? I really liked him in Scarlet Heart (i thought most everything in SH was pretty good, the drama overall was terrible though~ it was like a bunch of amazing things quashed together to create a beautiful disaster, the memory of which fills one with inexplicable rage).

That all being said, I think this drama is a terrible idea (WHY MODERN? LETS JUST CHANGE THE LOTR MOVIES WHILE WE'RE AT IT!), are mui and habaek going to be the two other points of the triangle? Maybe the chinese should do it first, fantasy/not modern at all~ (they're pretty good with that stuff), than anything else would just be gravy.

I love the comic, so much. I'll be watching this unfold warily, if at all(I'd probably be less apprehensive if they'd said "loosely based off of"). Personally I'm more curious about who's playing Mui~ (if he's even going to exist..)

The thing is, fans of the manhwa are not against this because NJH has never been seen in a darker role before.... it's that we did see him in angsty role with aspects like Habaek, and he was bad. (School 2015).

I read some of the manhwa a long time ago, and visually Nam Joo Hyuk is not a bad match for Habeak. Habaek (visually) is tall, has a masculine body (he's ripped), and a slightly feminine/pretty boy face. He's angsty, ethereal, otherworldly, and sexy. Soah (visually) is beautiful, tall, and thin with long black hair and mesmerizing eyes. Part of the reason the original manhwa was so captivating is because of the visuals, so that's why it would be ideal to have actors to be visual matches for the characters (to emulate the aura of the manhwa, even though it's in a modern day setting) and be great actors. Here are my picks for Habaek and Soah:

Habaek: Lee Soo Hyuk (perfect visually and acting wise), Ji Chang Wook, Lee Jun Ki, Kim Woo Bin (Wildcard - fits body type, not the face but he does look otherworldly and I think he would be able to pull off intense/angsty/sexy - love him!!), Hyun Bin (not visual match but would be amazing), Seo In Guk (not the best visual match but he can act his pants off)

Soah: Jeon Ji Hyun (this is the level of ethereal beauty I imagined Soah to have, and wonderful actress, but Soah is supposed to be quite young I believe), Kim So Hyun (not the best visual match but not bad and acting wise would knock it out of the park), Lee Sung Kyung (visually ok), Ha Ji Won (not what I pictured visually but would be great, but again Soah is quite young so maybe not), Yoon Eun Hye (not visual match but awesome actress), Shin Mina (ok visual, good actress), Lee Da Hae (ok visual), Go Ara & Kang Sora (ok visual, good younger actresses)

Oh, yeah! But since they might be going for a younger cast, I think KTR is a good choice, plus she can act well and she's worked with NJH in two CFs already. If NJH is going to accept this role, I think his chemistry with KTR will work out just fine :) (But still shipping him hard with Lee Sung Kyung hehe)

I also want Nam Joo Hyuk to have that breakout role because I've been following him since the start of his career and I am a fan of his.

However, I don't think he can carry this role as of now.
I've seen all his previous works, I do think he is improving bit by bit.. but, having said that, I have to acknowledge that his previous roles never truly required much depth and emotion.
He is doing fantastic as the charming Joon Hyung in Weightlifting Fairy, and he was great as adorable Eun Taek. Still, those characters are light compared to Habaek.
Of course, as actors, it's important to challenge themselves and try different roles. I just fear that if he does take on this role, and it ends up being too much for him to carry then he would receive negative feedback and might in turn give him a bad reputation as an actor.

He's still early in his career, and he is young.. so I have no doubt he'll eventually have that career defining performance- but until then, I don't mind waiting and watching him progress from a mediocre actor to one that is worthy of endless praise.
Even receiving an offer like this is a big accomplishment since this is one of tvN's bigger projects. I hope he considers this thoroughly.

If he does take on this role, I'll root for him as a fan and obviously hope for his success..

I understand the fan's frustrations because this is a manhwa adaptation, which means it already has a relatively solid fanbase to begin with, and a miscasting can definitely ruin it for the fans.

I am secretly praying Lee Jun Ki or Lee Soo Hyuk ends up with this role because I think they can definitely ace it.. and it's about time Lee Soo Hyuk gets his spotlight.

Ideally, I'd say Lee Soo Hyuk should be in all things other worldly at all times, but since we can't clone him :( I'll try to be optimistic.

Honestly, I also feel like directors also play a role in how well an actor performs. And I trust TVN's casting judgement based on their past projects. Nam Joo Hyuk certainly does look the part; I'd say his weakness in acting would be emoting but at least he doesn't over emote, which to me would seem to be something that's difficult to work around. And this director clearly knows how to create atmosphere and has worked successfully with Yonghwa, whose acting also has/had the same issues NJH has, so I feel like he should be fine /crosses fingers

If it's like what most of the comments are suggesting, and they are casting like Lee Soo Hyuk, Kim Woo Bin, or Kang Ha Neul. I'd much rather they cast Lee Joon Gi, cause the man will nail it to a tee, and honestly, visually he doesn't look older than any of them and he has acted against both Lee Soo Hyuk and Kang Ha Neul. So if the casting was going for an actor in his late 20s or even slightly pushing it at early 30s, Lee Joon Gi is like my first choice.

However, since they're casting Nam Joo Hyuk, it's clear that they're clearly going for a younger cast and possibly a different vibe. My first choice for an actor in his age range (aka early 20s) would be Yoo Seung Ho, but we all know he's pretty much booked up, so I'll have to remain content at this for now. Anyway, the pd and writer has never really failed us in the past, so I'd like to trust that they know what they're doing and remain positive about it.

When this adaptation was first announced my dream cast was Kim Ji Won and Yoo Seung Ho. Kim Ji Won just fits Soah look to a T, plus girl can act, sadly for some odd reason she has yet gotten her 1st lead role D: now with this 'rumor' i don't have high hope, since i feel they'll probably go for 'younger' cast.
As for NJH, idk from what i've seen of his, i'm not sure if he can pull off Habaek, who is granted the typical male lead, still needs some nuance in his acting..Unless they change the main characters personality altogether, and make it a more bubbly modern rom-com? they did say it's a 'spin-off' / rewrite. so yep

Kim Ji Won hasn't gotten her first break-out lead role but she's been a lead a few times. The ensemble lead cast of High Kick, and the What's Up drama which the leads all auditioned for, so it was full of talented actors T.T

No. Boy can't act plain and simple. He's improved yes, but looking at where he started and where he still very much is; that's not saying much. Honestly if he were any other actor with his talent and inder a less powerful management...boy would be playing all the second or third lead brothers both on prime time and especially in daily dramas.

Unless he turns it down, the role is pretty much his. However I think Kang Ha Neul or Lee Min Ho (younger 90s LMH that is) "our Donggu" from 1 Night, 2 Days, and many others have the better talent and ability for the role. Then again it's most likely his, so best of luck to him and may this project help him to further his experiences and hopefully getting better and better in his "acting".

As much as I adore Nam Joo-hyuk in Weightlighting Fairy, like everyone else, I wonder the suitability of him in this role. LJK would have been fantastic if they did not change the setting to modern times, which is unfortunate but the change probably mean a lower budget on props and costume.
Wonder if I will change my mind if both NJH and Lee Sung Kyung are cast as the leads in this drama.

I must be in the minority that do not get the charms of Yoo Seung Ho. I saw him in Imaginary cat and didn't see anything mind-blowing, nothing close to the impression NJH has left in me with his performance in WF. Never imagined that he had so many fans thinking that he would be perfect to impersonate a god-like beauty... forgive me YSH fans, it's not criticism I am just surprised.
I guess in the end is all about personal preferences, and since YSH and NJH have both many fans waiting to see them in action, I hope that both get interesting projects to shine and display their talents :D

I'm all supporting NJH if he decides to take on this role. :D The boy has to challenge himself if he wants to be a star. Opposite to most people here, what I am concerned about is this role not being good enough for him: will it be good quality or will it be a hot mess? Cannot imagine how you portray in modern-day Seoul a water god that is offered human sacrifices... only knowing that it comes from Misaeng's writer gives me a bit of reassurance...

I really enjoyed the manhwa which I read a few years ago. Recently I've just reread Bride of the Water God, missed some of the last chapters because it wasn't available in my language but I have read summaries on the rest up to the ending. It's not a very complex story, a bit cliche I would say and not all that unpredictable but it does have a very beautiful story, which I agree with other that would make an excellent Kdrama. I think the most compelling aspect of the manhwa would be the characters, you just can't help but love them. The manhwa has beautiful art and backgrounds which many reader agree that it's a waste to not use such for the drama. But production cost would be quite high if you look at the costumes for the characters alone.

Though I like Nam Joo Hyuk, I really don't want him for the character Haebak. As much as his physical appearance fits the description, I don't think he's up for such an emotional role yet. Haebak is a god, he's beautiful, tall, strong, mysterious, a bit cold yet kind, and loving. He's also young but not that young, so early or mid 20s, but he has lived for a long time since he immortal. He is a character that has a lot of depth. Though NJH has improved in his acting, I don't think he is ready to pull off that complex of a character yet. He also doesn't give off the vibe and image of Haebak.

Many people have given their thoughts on other actors who would suit the role better. My list of plausible actors include: Lee Junki, Yoo Seung Ho, Lee Dong Wook, Park Bo Gum, Kim Soo Hyun, Kang Ha Neul, Park Hae Jin, Kim Woo Bin, Ji Chang Wook, Yoon Shi Yoon and Lee Won Geun.
I know this a pretty long list but I think most of these actors can pull off the role of Haebak pretty nicely based on acting ability and their physical appearances fit fine, of course, some better than others but they are all good for the role.

But the choice of the leading lady who will play Soah is also extremely important. The chemistry between the two lead characters could make or break it. So they need to find an actress who fits the the role of Soah and pairs off well with whoever plays Haebak. I might be a bit biased but I really think Kim Ji Won fits the role perfectly. I'd love to see her act as Soah.

I'm a fan of the manhwa so I really hope they don't ruin the drama adaption of it since I have been waiting ever since news of them making it came out. And please no idol-actor for the lead roles.

I hope if Nam Joo Hyuk is confirmed, he can prove all his naysayers wrong. As someone who is enjoying him in Weightlifting Fairy, I wish him all the best.

But if he turns this down, I hope that the role will go to a younger actor or someone who hasn't exactly scored a lead role yet. I think the industry needs new blood and fresh faces. I definitely do appreciate the likes of Gong Yoo, Lee Min Ho and Song Joong Ki but there's something exciting about discovering new talent. Just like how Park Bo Gum took the lead and slayed in Moonlight.

I also love him in WF; what he is doing there requires some skill, whatever the reasons for his quick improvement are. Even more impressive if you think how new to the business he is.
Also, despite the general opinion, I liked him in Scarlet Heart, a lot. For me, his problem in SH was a poorly written secondary character and a messy production in general.
I hope he gets a good opportunity to continue challenging himself and reach a star status. To be honest, what concerns me most about this news is the quality of the project, not NJH capabilities for succeeding in that role. I wish him to choose well, and I trust that he will surprise us with another great performance next time. He has to do something different so people will have to acknowledge his talent. I think for some people that are classically beautiful it is very difficult to be acknowledged in other areas (think of what Charlize Theron had to do to get an Oscar, etc, etc). Unless you are Park Bo Gum, in which case, you are perfect and loved by everyone, haha!!
Whatever, I also wish NJH the best and lots of success in the future. It's also on my own benefit since I want to keep enjoying his awesomeness and prettiness in my screen. :D

You are right about his level of skill in WF. From the comments in this post, one'd think that he is incapable of emoting. I see and feel very differently with regards to this aspect.

In general, Kdrama actors tend to overact. It often passes as good acting. "Look, I am angsty!","Look, I am in pain!" "I am brooding here!" all exaggerated to make the point.

What I see of Nam Joo Hyuk in Weightlifting Fairy is subtlety and nuance. He doesn't do these histrionics and yet is able to convey and make us connect instantly to what Joon Hyung is feeling. That is something rare and precious. Thus, I am curious to see if this great performance of his is a one trick wonder or a sign of better things to come. There's something satisfying about seeing an actor grow.

I was actually thinking the same. New breed of actors need a break. Sometimes they were robbed of a big break because of this "high caliber" actors. Like WFKBJ, In my opinion. It's way better than LOTBS. But because of starpower of LMH and JJH. They weren't getting a good ratings.

In the first place, TVN will not offer the role to NJH if he doesn't have potential to do it. I think TVN will not take a risk if they know that NJH cannot do it.

If it is because he's from YG, I think what's still more important is how the actors act because the success of a drama is not based on their agencies, it still based on how they portray their given characters.

Its already given that NJH is still a newbie but why not we give him a chance to grow as an actor? (If he will accept the offer) Lets just not say he cannot portray the role well because of how he acts in WFKBJ (boy next door). Remember, he is also an ACTOR like LJK, LMH, LDW, GY etc.

I am no bias to anyone for the leading role since I want to be surprising by the actor's skill of portraying that character.
However, I don't think it is a good idea to modernize the manhwa. It is perfect as it is, and I feel like they are trying to over do the storyline to the point of it not being The Bride of the Water God anymore. :(

I was at first giddy of the thought that NJH will play the hot and brooding of handsomeness, water god -Habaek. I just want to see him back to my screen, but after some thoughts and reading all the beanies thoughts. I do agree that he is not yet ready for this kind of role. He seems not mature enough (though I know how he always wanted to be seen as mature man. Don't worry NJH, to me your mature enough.) But no, not for this show. I can't think of anyone to play as Habaek, I mean there's a lot to choose from. Hahahaha
Then I saw many has been suggesting Lee Soohyuk. I want him to step out of his second lead roles and grab some first lead already buuuuut I imagine him as Hooye and God he is a perfect fit. If its set in a Sageuk environmeny, imagine him in his long locks. Goshhhhh and he is so pale that I see Hooye's features in him. But yes if that happens, we'll be forever pity him as second lead who don't get the girl.
I'm quite disappointed with the change of setting because the sageuk theme is really what makes the manwha interesting and somewhat believable with all this gods and goddesses. If they set it up in a modern era, it will be somewhat the same as Goblin. So I hope the writter will change her decision, if it can be change. Though I trust her very much, ipI love Misaeng and her writting style. So goodluck!

Well well.. just finished with WFKBJ and NJH was such an eye-candy to watch! He definitely suits the adorable young man role.

MCW was also good in Good Doctor. Though I couldn't really connect with the character she played in that series, I still think she is a good actress. Not sure if I'm the only one who couldn't really feel that kind of feeling between MCW and JW in the series.

In all, if these two accept the role, I am likely to watch. Rooting for NJH then since many above comments think that he is a bit too early to handle this kind of roles.

Can I just say NJH is so popular right now that this post netted 450 comments! Hahaha! I'm a super fan of WLFKBJ, but more of LSK than NJH. Their chemistry in the drama was really excellent, I don't even know if it was really outstanding acting skills, good directing or they really have something going on in real life. (Here's hoping they are dating! Hahaha! )

If I am to attribute their chemistry to good acting skills, I would have to agree with what someone wrote here that LSK carried most of the weight for the drama since it''s a female- centric drama.

If NJH takes the role, I'm sure ratings will be high for the first few episodes because everyone wants to see him in another drama/or because this is one of the highly anticipated dramas for 2017. We'll just have to see if he has what it takes to sustain the viewers interest. But I'm rooting for him to succeed because I've seen how much he has improved from his previous roles. Hoping he will be paired with a good female lead who can really help him bring out the emotions required for each scene.

Given the choice, I'd like to see Park Hyung Sik & Lee Sung Kyung (I'm a big fan of hers after KBJ =>)get the lead roles. I saw their Trolls trailer & they seem to work really well. LSK just has to grow her hair out & dye it black again. =)
