Introverted Boss takes a week off to rewrite and regroup

This is an interesting move, but perhaps an ultimately positive one for the show (one hopes): Introverted Boss, tvN’s currently running Monday-Tuesday drama, is taking a week off the air in a direct effort to correct course and address viewer complaints about the show.

The drama was originally slated to air Episodes 5 and 6 this week, but announced last week that it would be skipping this week and resuming next Monday. At the time the production team didn’t offer a specific reason for the wait, but I didn’t think too much of it, particularly as this coincided with the Lunar New Year holiday over the weekend, which saw the pre-emption of a few shows (although Introverted Boss had no direct time conflict).

Today, however, producers explained that they are making extensive rewrites to the scripts for Episodes 5 and 6, saying, “There were quite a lot of revisions made to the initially released script, which essentially became a completely new one. Using that script, we are currently filming Episode 5.” Also: “We are working to make up for the parts that are lacking and improve [the drama]. We’ve decided to accept the audience’s views positively.”

The show premiered to a solid 3.16% rating and high hopes; the station had been looking to Introverted Boss to keep up its streak of hits, in no small part because this is the follow-up drama by Oh Hae-young Again’s director, PD Song Hyun-wook, in a reunion with his Marriage Not Dating writer, Joo Hwa-mi, and also that show’s hero, Yeon Woo-jin. Both of those shows were sleeper hits and drew strong popular and critical praise, and it seemed natural to think Introverted Boss would also score. Instead, ratings have been steadily slipping, down to 3.05% in Episode 2, then 2.14% and 1.97%.

Among the viewer complaints: A story that’s difficult to relate to or get behind, including unrealistic characters and forced plotlines, which have elicited negative reactions. Set at a high-powered PR firm, the story centers around a CEO (Yeon Woo-jin) with severe social anxiety and an inability to engage directly with people, whose evasiveness has inadvertently earned him a reputation as a feared, unreasonable boss. A plucky heroine (Park Hye-soo) comes into the company with a loud mouth and outgoing personality—and also a hidden agenda, blaming that CEO for the suicide of her sister, who used to work as his secretary.

It’s meant to be a cute setup, particularly as the heroine rages against the faceless CEO behind his back, not knowing that he’s the same guy that she’s seen around and finds shy and sweet in person. And I do find myself rooting for Mr. CEO to rise above his debilitating anxiety and assert himself and finally get credit for being the brains of the operation, rather than being badmouthed as a tyrannical boss. But the complaints definitely ring true with me, and despite wanting really hard to like it because of the team involved, aside from the hero, I haven’t really warmed to anybody, least of all the heroine. Any new employee who saunters up to the boss’s office on her first day, ignoring that she’s already late, and snooping through his desk and grabbing his hair angrily was a really sudden and early way to lose me. Then to make this the heroine I was supposed to root for in a romance with the hero? Not bloody likely.

It isn’t at all unusual for a drama to make tweaks to its story and characters on the fly (it’s part and parcel of the live-shoot system), as it gauges its audience’s interest along the way, but I’m a little surprised at the production’s transparency about this move and how much they are apparently willing to change. I give them props for not being defensive or precious, and not just telling the viewers that we just have to wait for things to get better, and that there are totally Big Important Reasons for all the things we dislike about it, and that it’s our fault we don’t see the appeal. To the contrary, they’ve stated, “This decision is because we accept the viewers’ opinions. We have cleared up and done away with many ridiculous setups.”

One source with the production team explains that they were unprepared for the barrage of negative feedback following the first episode’s broadcast: “We didn’t expect this kind of response. Most of the producers worked on Oh Hae-young Again and expectations were high, but internally, we were surprised. After considering many situations, it was decided to revise the script. Because we have a good director and good actors, I look forward to [the show] being able to receive love.”

Granted, there’s not a lot you can do for the fact that I don’t think Park Hye-soo is quite ready to be headlining a drama yet—she was promising in Age of Youth as one of the girls, but hasn’t found a way to give this character any oomph or warmth for me. It’s definitely a fault of writing more than performance, but I do think there are actresses who are capable of being likable despite a bad setup, and she isn’t one of them. Still, if this complete overhaul results in toning down her misplaced and off-putting aggressiveness, I will be very grateful.

Introverted Boss will resume airing next Monday, February 6, with Episode 5.

There's no complain on male lead character? Sure he has social phobia but the way he behave after hit the female lead car is wrong. He should've said sorry. Instead, he didn't want to go out from his car, gave money through window and ran away. That's annoying. The character is described as introvert boss but he's too extreme to say that he's introvert. What is that?? The writer is dissapointing.

I agree with you, but that is minor if you think about his responsability on the sister suicide and the aiding and abetting of the likely fiend.
And the aftermath, when he is silent because his friend is dating his sister.

So true. I love HwanKi but that doesn't sit right with me. The thought that he played a role in the sister's death by being a silent bystander and how he should be working harder to prevent that from happening to her beloved younger sister too.

Can't remember his age, but you'd think he'd try to seek help when he first hit adulthood.

Well, perhaps part of the problem is simply that episodes are too LONG! I didn't make it through 40 minutes of episode 1, and that was even before the heroine first showed up. I would say TvN needs to take that into account, not just rewrite characters and the story.

I have actually enjoyed the drama up until now although I don't disagree with the critical comments. Although it is less common now, there have been plenty of dramas with spunky, cute, but not very bright female characters. They misread situations and were kind to everyone but the hero. I appreciate just how many new dramas try to present women more realistically.

it's completely unbeilevable writing and it starts from script. i find it funny that people are also judging the actress so harshly but there are shows (not comparing, since i know how defensive people get but just showing) like bok joo where the male lead is abysmal and so is the female lead but it gets farther because of the writing. that's generally how it goes.

from episode 1 the characters weren't believable even the main man because the constant misunderstandings put as at such a distance from the world. it's mostly unbelievable even in k-drama world and when we get no gratification it is EXTREMELY off-putting to the viewer.

i find the honesty good but i also find it kind of crazy that they're doing this. i hope they don't succumb too much to the public but if they figure out where the holes are in the writing and how to merge the wants and needs of the characters with a viewer who needs to relate and mostly to UNDERSTAND the motivations, then it gets somewhere.

episode one and two i just could not get behind anyone, specifically the woman which frustrates me because people are always so quick to push them aside. there's barely any rhyme or reason to each move one makes and if there is an explanation it's horrible stupid.

flaws and lots of other things make characters complex. so do many themes but the complexity and the themes are being forced instead of flowing? i think. and it's telling so many people are having trouble with the show outside of social commentary. also you cannot just have twists for twists sake. it's lovely and refreshing to show a different reality or side of life or what other k-dramas don't show but we need to be given it in a real way because that's ultimately what (most) k-dramas specifically romcoms try to do-and many succeed.

It's been a long time since I've seen something like this happen and personally the first time I've seen it at TVN so the public feedback must have experienced a barrage of very negative feedback since netizens are VERY vocal about their thoughts plus there was the sharp drop in ratings. I also think TVN execs are giving the team a chance since they've worked with them before and have shown they can make hit dramas.

I'm really curious to see how this works out because I would think they'd need way more than a week.

I still haven't watched episodes four. Do we actually learn, why she blames him for her sisters death? She must have had a reason to wait three years and now trying to out him for his crimes. But I don't think we were actually given a reason, other than her talk with the secretary.

I must admit there were a few scenes, where I imagined some other actress playing the female lead and wondering, If I would have felt the same disconnect.

Maybe she blames him because he was her boss and direct supervisor.
We know that the "friend" is responsible for hiring her against company customs.
I think it is all his plan to put them together, just we don't know why.

What's more stunning and disturbing is that the production staff seem absolutely flabbergasted at the negative reception to the female lead (and they made sure to make that clear ha). It really makes me lose faith in the writer and the producers. I hope this is an eye opener for them and I hope they don't chalk it up to the audience being too picky or not understanding their vision.

Han Groo made Joo Jang Mi work and she was nearly as new as PHS back in MND. Remember, Joo Jang Mi, smashing things, drinking like its the end of the world, crazy dance, crazy laughs and couldn't say no to anybody for a long time and had petty fights up to her wedding day with Gong Gi Tae. So, I get the flabbergasted part. First time, their flawed heroine couldn't connect to the mass.

I am glad they are re-writing it. Too bad they cannot change the main actress. I do not think Park Hye-Sooi is a lead material - yet. That's what happens when they push new actresses to lead too soon. She does have potential for sure, but she is not there yet.

I don't know how I feel about them announcing this to the whole world... I may be the minority, but I think they should have kept this decision under wraps and quietly changed the script without us really noticing.

For me, I 100% appreciate that they took this feedback to hear, and are going to incorporate it, but it makes me trust the writing/cast crew less when they obviously announce it to the whole world. Maybe it's me, but saying that you're rewriting your show is a bit of a red-flag. Like "it was that bad, that you had to announce it." And now while I'm watching this show, all I'm going to think about is that they wrote the show...

Any thoughts, or am I just strange?

writing writing writing. And Direction. For me, 95% of the problems with this drama can be laid at the door of these 2 factors. But, it's true that even unpalatable characters can be made better by a good actress.

"Any new employee who saunters up to the boss’s office on her first day, ignoring that she’s already late, and snooping through his desk and grabbing his hair angrily was a really sudden and early way to lose me. Then to make this the heroine I was supposed to root for in a romance with the hero? Not bloody likely." Yep...this is the first time I talked to the screen I think. And as the episodes went on, the talking got longer and louder and more sarcastic!

"It’s definitely a fault of writing more than performance, but I do think there are actresses who are capable of being likable despite a bad setup, and she isn’t one of them. Still, if this complete overhaul results in toning down her misplaced and off-putting aggressiveness, I will be very grateful." I feel sorry for her because this is going to put a LOT of pressure on her which she may or may not be able to handle and that could affect her performance negatively. Which will make me even sorrier for her, but piss me off more to have a drama I had such high hopes for ruined. But...she also should have thought before taking on such a powerhouse role! This team and cast are primo and she can't ride on their coat tails...she has to be able to keep up and newbies need to be careful about jumping headlong into this kind of kettle. Man...I don't know how she is going to handle this because so much of the criticism is being dumped on her head and that's not really fair. If the writer hadn't written the character that way or the director had told her to tone down her aggressiveness and be more hesitant.....

Honestly, I wasn't that put off by her and was willing to wait and see how her character played out, but the writing of the overall plot was so irritating! There was nothing about it new or fresh and it was such a harsh whiplash from the dark suicide and bullying aspect to the lightness of blow up heads and cartoonish behaviors with background music to match. And that scene of them shoving him out on the stage was so cruel I was standing up in fury before I even knew it. These are adults...and don't tell me, as a viewer, that these people are all that obtuse, that stupid, that they can't see this guy has serious mental issues! We all went to school with kids like this, and the fact that this group of people so callously disregarded his feelings puts all of them in the same boat as the bullies from his youth and one step removed from his father.

I feel SO sorry for the cast, crew ....AND the writer. This is going to be so stressful. I hope they can get another hiatus to help them catch up. I don't mind waiting if it means a better drama! I expect the next news will be an episode cut from 20 to 16.

What I wanted to say was, there's a difference between the female leads in say, Witch's Romance or Signal or The Princess' Man, and Introverted boss. As someone who identifies as a feminist, I much prefer strong female leads, but by strong, I'm referring to women who have common sense, are intelligent, confident, able to take the lead, understand when to back off, and can stand their ground in the face of opposition.

The female lead in Introverted boss isn't coming across as any of these things. She's just pushy and annoying, offensively so. Like the male lead stereotypes of Boys Over Flowers.

I think I can find it acceptable for a heroine to be dim, a little doormat-y, and not confident since I can identify with some of those traits but she needs to have the right traits to be a good neighbor, friend, and colleague..someone you wouldn't mind sitting on a 6 hour bus trip with. if she isn't going to be a good neighbor, friend, or colleague, there needs to be a clear indication that she will be by the end.

Actually I'm kinda hard to please....or maybe I'm a perfectionist or maybe I'm a female so I tend to be harsher on judging female leads...I actually don't like door mats (like the lead gal in Fated to Love You which I dropped quickly cos I couldn't stand her overly nice natured to be stepped all over the place by the pple around her), yet I also dislike the lead gal in Introvert Boss, cos she isn't cute and too pushy/bossy/rude/exaggerated etc....I even think to myself, omg, don't tell me this kind of lead gal, the lead guy would even fall in love with her ???!! wth ??! It is supposed to be a rom-com right? But everything or most things in it irked/annoyed/frustrated me instead of making me laughing over it or/and feeling sweet (Shopping King Louis and Weightlifting Fairy are really sweet and funny at times too)....If a rom-com irks us more than it amuses us then ..........

The Introvert Boss team just came back from Cherating for a 1-week shoot last week.. I wonder if the team already re-wrote the script before flying over for shooting or they will just have to cut some scenes that may not fit the new storyline.

I sincerely hope they will be able to pull off the rewrites smoothly. I'm a fan of Yeon Woo Jin, Yoon Bak, Gong Seung Yeon and was so excited when their casting news was announced. Plus reunion of Marriage Not Dating PD and writer!

However I ended up being disappointed in how Episodes 1-4 has been so far. I'm honestly turned off by the female lead character and don't feel like I want to root a romantic relationship between the male and female leads. I have issues with how they wrote the female lead character - I've never watched Park Hye Soo before this drama so I can't say much about her acting skills.

Oh Haeyoung was also written as annoying but I was OK with how Seo Hyun Jin portrayed the character. Of course Another Oh Haeyoung's writer is different from Introvert Boss writer (but same PD).

After Dropping this Drama in episode 4, The Drama God's finally heard my Prayers!!!

Honestly I'm not surprised this happen what surprised me was that for the First Time I Agree with Koreans Audiences. This Drama Needs to change because it Lacks Focus, Relatable Characters *aside from the Male Lead* and a GOOD Heroine.

Like I said in my last post I love Park Hye Soo the Actress but she was Not ready for this Leading role especially when the character was written to be very flawed on paper similar to how Oh-Hae Young was. Unfortunately this Drama just highlight how Green PHS still is and her lack of Breathing Charisma to a very complex character couldn't be better proof of that. In my humble opinion a more mature looking and seasoned actress was the correct choice for this character that PHS plays.

As for the screenwriting... Joo Hwa-Mi was Amazing in "Marriage Not Dating" so I'm Not really sure why he is having a Hard time with Introverted Boss this time around. I can only speculate that he is either having a Slump our maybe he rush to put his scrip together with out second thought and is know biting him in the A**.

As for the Director Song Hyun-Wook, I honestly can't say that the show is lacking in that department so I personally don't hold him accountable for the shows issues.

All in all Good Luck to you Introvert Boss! I will Read your Recaps in Dramabeans out of curiosity to see if you really change and if you do we might meet again.

Dropped after episode 4 for all the reasons others do not like: it has no idea what kind of drama it wants to be, the female lead is not likeable or relatable or even remotely realistic, the lead actress is pretty much the same as her character, the plot is a total hot mess, and it's choppy and just all around hard to watch.

Man, I know lots of people hated Ro-woon, but I still loved her and especially the setup. I mean, we can forgive cold chaebol heroes who actively attack the heroine and endanger her relationships or livelihood out of pettiness or pride and give them the benefit of the doubt, but we can't look forward to the character growth in a heroine who literally thinks the hero caused her sister's death?

Yeah she's a bratty kid and acts before she thinks, but it was set up that way for her to be the opposite of the hero, who overthinks every action so much that he never ends up doing anything. It would have been so fun to see them meet in the middle, for her to grow up and him to jump his hurdles.

What I find a bit irritating is the misapplication or type casting of the term introverted and extroverted.

In my experience, extroverts are (generally) of higher EQ, understand social situations well and know how to generate interaction. Not pushy, loud and, almost as a rule, offensive. They love company and people and derive "energy" from interaction which makes them very adept socially.

Introverts (like myself) tend to lose energy from social interaction, avoid frequent gatherings and zone out for quiet time. But introverts do socialize as needed but just find it difficult - they are not necessarily (and seldom) shy or awkward. Nor are they necessarily insensitive, inarticulate or inexpressive.

What the show describes as extroverted is actually manic and borderline psychotic. The "introvert" is more likely a moderate to severe form of SAD.

Well.. In upper post I read some beanies mention not to compare Park Hye-soo to Jun Ji-hyun's level. Now let's drag the level down.

Remember Suzy's character Go Hye-mi in Dream High? She is not likeable at all in the beginning. Albeit given difficult background, she still treats her friend harsh, self-centered, and think highly of herself. Then she realizes all her faults and begins to change, like what her teacher teaches her. Despite the acting, I still respect how Go Hye-mi's character is written. She is one of heroine who has big character development.

I am expecting Ro-woon to redeem herself the way Hye-mi does.

Wish we got smooth and neat change.
