Celebrate Dramabeans’ 10th anniversary with us!

Happy new year everybody! This year is special for us not only because we get to kick 2016 away (although it was admittedly a pretty solid year for dramas) and welcome in a fresh, unspoiled one, but also because it marks Dramabeans’ tenth anniversary.

This site started as a tiny side project in January 2007, and that means we just completed our tenth year and are now heading into Year Eleven. That number still doesn’t seem quite real to me, and I can’t quite grasp that we’ve been at it for so long (and through so many dramas)—but, if good for nothing else, the white hairs on my head are testament to how much time really has passed.

I never imagined when Dramabeans began that it would turn into a full-time job, or that it would grow to this size, or that I’d meet and make such connections with people I consider lifetime friends. It’s now officially been the longest job either I or girlfriday have held, which is a bit daunting to think about but is also something we’re intensely grateful for. We love this work, and although it often exhausts us—we aren’t as young as we once were!—we still find the energy somehow to carry on, because it’s so worth it. (And, it’s ruined us for proper jobs elsewhere, if we’re being honest!)

I’ve always said that I had no idea how long I intended to run Dramabeans, but that’s not because I had one foot out the door, but more that it would have been too daunting to commit for so much time up front, feeling locked in by a promise rather than being led by something more powerful—the joy that dramas bring us, and that fierce need of the fan’s heart to share that with other fans. And I firmly believe it’s that open-ended view that has kept us open and going strong, because while we know that we can walk away whenever that love dies, that’s a freeing thought more than anything, because we also know that we’ll probably love dramas forever in some capacity.

To celebrate our tenth birthday, we’ve got some fun things planned in the month(s) ahead, so keep your eyes peeled! We’ve got our eyes on a new look for the site, and we’re also planning a celebratory party—one that we’d like to open up to all of you to attend, to meet other Beanies and hang with the Dramabeans staff. Because what’s the fun in aging if you don’t get to party?

Dramabeans 10 Year Anniversary Party

Saturday, February 11, 2017
5PM
At Monk Space in Koreatown, Los Angeles

To attend, please RSVP to hello@dramabeans.com, providing your name and number of attendees.

The venue has a capacity limit, so we’ll be taking RSVPs to reserve spots and will confirm via email. (If we run out of slots, we’ll start a waiting list, so if you have to bow out at a later date, please let us know so we can open it up for others.)

Thank you all for an eventful and rewarding ten years—you guys make this place the best job to turn to every day. We hope to see you there!

Congratulations on 10 years and Thank you! It has been a joy to visit this site day after day. I've never missed reading recaps because I could always learn something new which I missed watching dramas.

(now I think I have to cut down the time I spend on this site tho so that I can get something done for a change -That is my plan for this year anyway)

I found your site when I was in 3rd year highschool which was 2008. I was looking for the soundtrack of Coffee Prince. Mehehe. I honestly can't thank you enough for all the years you've provided us with so much more than just recaps and drama news. You've been my little repreive when college life was too much to deal with. My little nook in the internet where I can indulge my kdrama addiction when work life is draining me. You've helped so much thru the years and for that you have my eternal gratitude ladies. From being a teenager who was slightly obssessed with Gong Yoo to a full pledge part of the "adults" (and still obsessing over Gong Yoo).... Thank you for being there for me

Congratulations javabeans, Girl Friday, and all the Minions! I can't tell you how much you have enriched my life and my world view. I'm so impressed by your talent, and your hard, hard work on Dramabeans. You ladies have been through serious accidents, back surgery and god-knows-what-else, and still, you have persevered to bring us the best site for Kdrama recaps, reviews and news. Truly, the only cure for the Kdrama addiction is... MORE KDRAMA!!!! I humbly thank you, and wish you the best; you deserve it!

Hello!

Congratulations on 10 years! Wow, I still remember reading your recaps / translations in the soompi forums over 10 years ago and then coming here when you started the site!

Are you the 2nd longest Korean entertainment site after soompi?

I've been coming here since you've started! I love reading about the Korean language / culture nuances that straight translations miss. May you have another 10 years and another 10 years for many years to come!

Congratulations to the amazing DB team, you guys do a great job by giving us the recaps and news about our favorite actors and upcoming shows.

I'm from South America, Venezuela, and I started watching kdramas since 2012 with Stairway to heaven (on national tv) and then started looking for another i youtube and the snow ball turned huge. I stumbled into this blog and I'm a fan and reader since then, I loved your recaps, they're funny and you complete my thoughts about scenes and dramas. One of my favorite recaps is Big's last episode. You guys read my mind and while watching City Hunter you and beanies helped me confirm that I was not crazy nor alone and that CH was awesome...

Keep doing that amazing jod and let's hope for many years more

WOW, 10 years already?! I've been following you guys for almost the whole time - I remember when it was just lonely javabeans! I'm so glad to see that the site has thrived and that the love of kdrama has gone global. Thank you so much to javabeans and all of the recappers and contributors for putting in the time, effort, and hard work to keep this site running. Reading your commentary makes the viewing experience even more fun (or tolerable with certain drams).

I'm sorry to miss the party, but major CONGRATULATIONS on your success and longevity, and all the best for the new year!!

Hi - gosh 10 years already, makes me think of two things. 1) i discovered you so very early on, since i've been visiting this site since 2008. 2) wow i am getting old!

Thank you for always being consistent, fun and a giving me insight to the drama's that i watch as a non-korean. Your recaps help me understand cultural references adding a layer to many drama's i wouldn't get without them and making the drama's even more interesting/funny/sad. You were right 2016 was a great year for drama's, i've started watching them again after a couple years off

Anyway - to another 10 more years! xx

As an OG ? ..though mostly a silent reader here, I want to sincerely congratulate this website on your 10th year anniversary!

Especicually to you @javaveans, I've been a reader since 2007 when I was looking for more episode recaps of Dal Ja's Spring (still one of my favorite dramas btw)! You've fully expanded, from just javabeans.com to more writers and a larger recap audience. Kudos to @girlfriday as well whose witty recapping is my favorite along with javabeans.

I was in and out of drama land for a couple years, until Park Bo Gums and Kim Yoo Jungs Love in the Moonlight caught my heart again (side note: when did I become a noona sighh) yet this website continues to grow even when some drama years are pure blah. So again, wishing blessings and really good dramas for 2017 to recap this year!

Happy !0th year anniversary! Started watching and being addicted to Korean Drama 5 years ago that's also the same time I stumbled on Dramabeans and have been a follower since then. Just started commenting lately because I know that my comments will be respected and most of the followers are decent, peace loving and mature people. We may differ in our opinions but our common bond that hold us together is our love for Korean Drama!

A Happy Blessed New Year to everyone!

Congratulations Dramabeans!

I can't believe its been 10 years already! I've been reading the site for that long! I still remember logging onto my huge clunky PC to watch Coffee Prince and then stumbling across this very website afterwards. I remembering wanting to know more about societal context and just wanted to read more discussion other than what was on Soompi, and Dramabeans gave me just what I was looking for. To think - I was in my last of primary school then, kept up with db throughout all highschool and uni (Dramas are my happy place to de-stress, I've found) and now I'm out in the big wide world of adulthood and working. Crazy how time flies.

Thankyou Javabeans & Girlfriday and the whole DB team for making this site what is and continuing to maintain it to such a high standard. You're doing the good work, and I appreciate it so much!

- Kat

Thank you so much for tonight's gathering and your work on this website Java Beans and staff. It was wonderful to meet all friendly DB staff and enjoy your hospitality. We got to meet fellow beanies and feel the awesomeness of this community that you've created. We look forward to the new website too. James, Lolly Pop, gummimochi, and Cherkell were a joy to chat with. The food was delicious. The photobooth and games were a hoot. Loved the floating pictures and goodie bags. Everyone went home with something and a huge smile on our faces. Awesome anniversary party!

Wow I can't believe its been 10 years since dramabeans began. That means I have been watching kdramas for almost 8 years.(lol I feel so old now). However I just wanted to say thank you to all the dramabeans team members. You have always been my go to place to get a deeper understanding into the kdrama shows that have left me confused either due to cultural differences or just odd endings ^_^ I hope that the dramabeans community continues to grow and provide a helping hand for people like me and also a platform for kdrama lovers to discuss and critique the shows we hold dear to our hearts.

Happy Anniversary

No way. I cannot believe I have been coming to read over this site for eight years, but I checked for the year that Boys Over Flowers came out and it was 2009.
Thanks for the years of entertainment and information. It has to be special or it would not have kept drawing me back.

I am very new to this site, yet I think I understand pretty well why many Beanies can't find the way out here. hehe. Thanks to Romantic Teacher Doctor Kim actually, that was my first time reading the recaps made here and replied to the comments in those threads.

Cheers to your many many years to come. Hope I and many Beaies still stick around for those many many many years!

Happy Anniversary!!!

I'm a regular reader of this site -yes I was (am) that typical silent reader- but I think I need to pop a comment right now to let you know that I am beyond grateful for all your posts (and wisdom) all these years.

The discussions are great, the commentaries are eye opening, and I've learned so much about Korean cultures from you guys.

Keep up the good work. Thank You!!!
