Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim in talks for extension

There’s a possible extension in the works for SBS’s hit Monday-Tuesday drama Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim, which will (sadly) be pre-empted next Monday, December 26 for a special broadcast of SBS’s Award Festival music program. Because of the pre-emption, the drama is considering a 1-episode extension to even out the broadcast schedule, which would bring the total episode count to 21.

The series is a huge hit for SBS, as it more than doubled its opening 9.5% ratings and the numbers have stayed higher than 20% for the last four weeks straight (last week it reached 23.8%). There obviously wouldn’t be talk of an extension if it hadn’t been performing well, though the default plan is to air the final two episodes as a double header on the last day, if the extension falls through.

Though I’m never one for stretching out a show, Romantic Doctor is fairly procedural and could probably introduce a new accident, disease, or disaster of some sort and not really change the overall pace too much. Admittedly, the medical cases are the part I like least, but this show usually finds a way to integrate character arcs with the cases in an interesting way. Also, I wouldn’t be opposed to an episode where Yoo Yeon-seok and Seo Hyun-jin get trapped in a mountain cabin for a day and night and have nothing else to do but bicker and make up, over and over. Okay fine, they can maybe stop to save a random hiker’s life or something.

Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim airs on Mondays and Tuesdays on SBS, and is currently scheduled to end January 10, to be followed by Ji Sung’s legal thriller Defendant.

I replayed this video for more than ten times. It's so HAWT. I like this way better than the one they show in the episode because this is not affected by the orange light at the back that the director loves to use. And the kiss is pretty intense...(?) This kiss is even longer than Yoo Yeon Seok's kiss in Perfect Proposal.

(Gonna watch the video again)

They both always have been serious (if I can put it like that) kissers. no wonder their kiss scenes look so real. I would pay to have just one kiss scene with Yoo Yeon Seok. I could even sell Santander Clause for that lool

Oh daaaamn boi O.O

@KDramaWatcher2609 I can't reply to your comment so I will just reply here. I have watched the latest episode of WFKBJ! And what you wished for have come true. ;) and there's another couple that's being confirmed too in this episode! ;) And one more in the making! ;)

Wow that was some BTS. Now that was a proper kissing scene. For a main station. Amazing how much difference it makes when you're not seeing a dead fish lips kiss on screen.

The fact that they filmed this kiss scene sideways so tat we could see their moving lips n not dead lips kissing is so awesome.

Thank you so much for this! I love the way they collapsed into each other's arms after the kiss (at about the 0:55 mark). Swooning so hard right now.

I seriously hope that she would accept him after this swooning kiss. I rmb seeing her NOT rejecting DJ holding her hand in last week's episode during the 1st snow but she still rejected his feelings thereafter. That was rather disappointing.

whew! to make out so hotly like that with a hottie and to actually get paid doing it.... man these guys have such a great job. and how is Eric Munn feeling about all of this? If there ever was a love-triangle arc with alk three of them, I think my head would split.

Dang that's some good kissing. One of the best kissing scenes I've seen. They really looked great together!!

How do I survive with just one episode for next week? How?! I...

Lol me being dramatic aside, I'm not fond of the idea of extension and totally feel down about the show not airing its episode next Monday. Sigh.

However, if they really want to proceed with the extension, they better make use of the extended episode to wrap the story perfectly rather than making the show's plot dragging (but to me the show doesn't show any drying spell sign yet for now since many secrets yet to be revealed and a new character is even introduced, so one episode extension could be okay)

And I'm here standby-ing in DB waiting "patiently" for the recaps of the latest episodes I've watched. This is my most favorite kdrama currently airing as of now. Second in line is Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo. Meanwhile still remained neutral to Goblin though the OTP still doesn't appeal to me (as of now) :)

Same here. As much as I like Goblin, it's the bromance and Sunny that are keeping me in the show. The main couple just lacks appeal to me right now.

Extensions are a big No-No in my book. But I just just juuuuustttt might be tempted to want it with this one. But at the very least its just one episode anyway, but I still hope it doesnt ruin the magic.

I guessed that they could just add one more medical case like Zika or something like that. I don't think it will ruin the plot too much of they just stayed fixed to their original plot of secrets to be revealed n stuff like tat.

Required fields are marked *

No, please! No extension needed.

Let the show lives its life and die at the right time.

The pace has always been a mess, and it's still not fixed at this stage, so to stretch the plot even for a one episode can easily become a disaster.

The main characters, as good as they are don't have enough background or substance to sustain more time.
And the romance is very secondary to the main plot which focused on ethical issues, medical responsability and the characters indvidual journey. An epilogue about romance wouldn't be consistent with the structure of the show and would appear very random to me.

Anyway, who i am trying to convince? They'll do it without a doubt considering the ratings, if the actors don't have a conflicting schedules.

I don't mind one whole episode of Yoo Yeon Seok and Seo Hyun Jin kissing HAHAHA. [SPOILER] If you think the latest kiss is hot, the behind-the-scene of the kiss is even hotter. ;)

There are also more and more PPL in the drama as the drama gets more popular. I guess it's also profitable for SBS to extend the drama. Hopefully, the plot will not be stretched thin like many dramas with extensions did.

I wondered about the biological background of Seo Jung that I even suspected her to be the daughter of Teacher Kim. I wonder why did her mum committed suicide n stuff like that. Even the family of Teacher Kim is not mentioned at all. And what is Chairman Shin keeping from Teacher Kim?? He seems to me that he is not a villain (or maybe neutral in between good and bad) ???

Required fields are marked *

Yeah, I used to have a feeling that Seo Jung is Teacher Kim's daughter whom he never knew. President Do and Teacher Kim could be best friends in the past during their college days, probably together with Seo Jung's mother. Even though President Do had a crush on Seo Jung's mother, Seo Jung's mother eventually ended up with Teacher Kim. Hence, President Do and Teacher Kim began to drift apart. (y'know, probably like Snape, Lily and James during their Hogwarts days, although I hate to equate Snape to President Do). Perhaps Seo Jung's mother did not want to tie down Teacher Kim from his bright future and simply disappeared from his eyes. Since she knew President Do always carried a torch for her, he would take care of Seo Jung after she committed suicide.

However, at this point of time, I don't think my hypothesis will come true because I think Seo Jung's mother is simply a plot device to show the trauma Seo Jung went through.

Chairman Shin is definitely keeping something from Teacher Kim, something that happened 20 years ago. Probably we can have a more in depth discussion in the episode recap?

Hi Starswillshine, thanks for all your replies. Will be watching WLFKBJ later at night. I'm happy that my wish will.come true in this drama!

As for your theory on Seo Jung's biological background, that's my exact sentiments too ! That's one of the reason why President Shin hate n is so jealous of Teacher Kim ! Let's await to see more secrets being unfold !! :)

I support and agree with that plot completely. It's Love Rain-ish but it fits. Imagine if Kim Sabu would in fact be her father? I think I'd get so many laughs at what Master would do to Kang Dong Joo. Yet, i can't see Kim Sabu as one who would leave his wife and kid, unless they never married and he didn't know he had a kid. But a part of me prefers for SJ to be be president Do's love child. One, I like SJ as in Beom's noonim, and two, it just burns President Do so much more when both his kids prefer Kim Sabu more than him. Bwaha. Evil laugh here.

I was all set to be upset about the possibility of an extension, but then you brought up the cabin idea...I'm into that.

Those two have such good chemistry together, it's a shame most of their moments get interrupted by all these dying patients.

I feel sad for Dong Joo who fell sick n collapsed from overworking. How could they let one doctor handled the whole ER for a straight 3 days++ without proper rest/sleep/food? This reminds me of a doctor who died due to overworking n whose soul was summoned by the Grip Reaper in Goblin ....

Still behind on watching this week's episodes ( gasp! Will watch tonight :) ), but I wouldn't mind one episode extension. I don't feel like the weekly medical dilemmas are repetitive or boring. It hasn't always been one new case per episode. I like seeing how each situation has affected the main characters and their personal growth.

Totally forgot that the year end shows will be affecting the usual schedules too.

save a random hiker’s life

You mean save a random doctor who is depressed by the sudden death of a loved one, and has fallen and can't get up, and is suffering from a career-threatening wrist injury?

If they do it right they could extend to infinity :)

Exactly. I've always feel this only loophole in Seo Jung's PTSD being swept under the carpet just like that. I remember at the beginning of the series she was so traumatised, have hulluncations n even tried committed suicide. But now she's all fine n back to her cheery self ??

I'm not a fan of extensions, either... but now that a certain resident has returned to Doldam, that opens the door to more character development. I certainly hope to see Dong-joo's mom again, but don't really expect much beyond the other side of a phone call.

Not only did we get another smooch for the record books this week, but technically, you could say that they "got a room," too... if you consider sleeping on a cot in the hospital while your colleague recovers from exhaustion "getting a room." Well, Dong-joo did say five years ago that he wanted to sleep with her... but I don't think he meant in the ER hooked up to an IV drip... ;-)

Yep, an epic Kdrama kiss in the tradition of QIHM... and OHYA. Be still my heart.

The BTS had such a nice vibe. It sold me that I was seeing the real deal. Compared to the BTS of one of the kissing scenes in THE KING'S DAUGHTER, SOO BAEK-HYANG in which she appeared nervous as a cat, it shows how much SHJ has come into her own as an actress since 2013. This time she's the sunbae, or maybe is just a little older and wiser...

@Lord C:

Throw in a St. Bernard with a keg of brandy and they'll be all set. ;-)

I actually feel sad for Dong Joo's mum from the beginning of the series. She alone tend her shop n always couldn't even get her son on the phone who is working miles away from her (he often rejects her calls n such).... I hope DJ will pay more attention, care n concern over his mum despite being always in dilemma of good n bad morals n medical enthics n being embroiled in hospital politics.

My standard rule to extension is just like most commenters here: Better not
But...
[SPOILER-ISH COMMENT AHEAD?]
with certain character is coming and joining them, and another character seems to have second thought about his part in the evil plan (this is so obvious isnnit?), we probably can stretch a bit of the plot. There is new development on the romance too, altho I probably in the minority who doesnt really care about it. It was hot, yes but for once, a medical drama which doesnt turn into romcom at workplace drama, so....

I usually don't like extensions to drama before because it will stretch the plot and got messy at times but, but this is the best medical drama South Korea has ever made as of this date for me, so maybe I'll reconsider?

Besides, there's a lot to know from our characters, especially Kim Sa bu. There's also an addition to our Doldam Staff in the person of Yeon Hwa-ssi. She needs time to develop too.

I know the loveline is only secondary to the Medical ethics and politics and other issues but, can we have this:

"an episode where Yoo Yeon-seok and Seo Hyun-jin get trapped in a mountain cabin for a day and night and have nothing else to do but bicker and make up, over and over."

ohhhh.. How I love the Idea!!! <3 <3 <3

extensions will not be bad, since they can create another medical scenario. That's one thing with medical dramas there is endless possibilities of creating another episode!
