2016 SBS Drama Awards

Awards, awards, so many awards!

Not only are there a glut of ceremonies at this time of year, the 2016 SBS Drama Awards decided to change up their awards categories this year, separating them into multiple divisions by genre on top of the standard Top Excellence and Excellence prizes, amounting in a truly ridiculous number of winners. On the one hand, I actually like seeing drama awards based on genre rather than pure length or format, but I think it’s pretty apparent they were trying to give out as many as possible.

Still, inasmuch as I always tell myself these awards mean very little, I still look for my favorites and feel happy when they’re represented, so even something that’s mostly a participation and popularity award still has meaning. And while it’s a little unusual for the Daesang to be for a project that’s not done airing yet, I can’t complain about seeing Han Seok-kyu get it for Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim, which was definitely one of the station’s biggest hits of the year.

I said there were a lot of awards!

As for the fashions, it was a pretty good-looking event, though as so often is the case, the ladies disappointed me by going almost exclusively black or white. Why so many bridal gowns on red carpets, whyyy? I was dying for a pop of color or an unusual cut, and instead it was a very safe, albeit sleek and glamorously styled, event.

I was happy to see both Seo Hyun-jin and Yoo Yeon-seok pick up Excellence awards for Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim, though the part that made me laugh was their “Idol Academy Award” for being “Kissing Masters”—and if you’ve seen the drama, you’ll know they’ve got some sizzling kiss scenes. Watch and learn, kiddos.

Park Shin-hye (Doctors) has totally worn this gown before, right? It’s not my faulty memory? She looks beautiful, but sometimes her dresses have a samey-samey quality to them. (Aha! Found the dress, from 2012’s KBS Drama Awards.)

Lee Min-ho takes some of the prettiest pictures, I swear. He’s the one who’s been making Legend of the Blue Sea a hoot for me to watch, over (surprisingly) Jeon Ji-hyun, so I think his award is appropriate. Although, again, it’s not like anyone got left out of these categories! I’m just bummed Jeon Ji-hyun wasn’t at the event.

Despite its disappointing broadcast performance, Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo was well-represented at the awards, and both its stars came by to pick up their trophies, looking stunning. I don’t absolutely love IU’s dress, but when you put her and Lee Jun-ki together, the overall beauty quotient is so dazzling that I hardly think about that.

Jo Jung-seok picked up a well-deserved Top Excellence in the Romantic Comedy, as did Namgoong Min. Part of me is annoyed at the splitting of winners when there are already so many more categories, but then the part of me that’s unwilling to choose between Jo and Namgoong wins out.

Speaking of whom, Namgoong Min was presented his award by his Beautiful Gong Shim co-star (and fellow award-winner) Minah. Together, they made that quirky little show crackle, and I’m happy for both of them.

Minah had a costume change for the actual ceremony, having walked the red carpet in a Cinderella-esque confection of a princess gown. Okay, she’s the idol in her breakout actress role, so despite my fatigue of familiar white gowns, I’ll give her the frothy princess dress of the night.

I did hate their co-star Seo Hyo-rim’s character in Beautiful Gong Shim (so jealous, so petty), but she probably has my favorite gown of the night. Check out that beading and sparkle! How does it shine so much without looking gaudy? It’s a mystery, but it’s perfect.

Yoo Seung-ho (Remember–Son’s War), one of my perennial red-carpet favorites! I don’t know if it’s that he never ages, or that he was blessed with ambiguously youthful looks to begin with, because I’m pretty sure he’s looked like this for years. Am eagerly awaiting his new drama Ruler—Master of the Mask.

If splitting categories was what allowed Oh Yeon-seo to pick up an award for Come Back, Ajusshi, then well done, because her zany comic performance drove that show and was an eye-opener to a new aspect of her talents, and it would have been sad to overlook it just because the show got poor ratings. (One of several dramas sacrificed to the juggernaut that was Descended From the Sun.)

Pretty! Maybe it’s not that bold or daring, but it’s beautiful, flattering, and a color not white or black, so I love this look on Kim So-eun, who picked up an acting award for Our Gap-soon.

Kim Sung-ryung (Mrs. Cop 2) is surely drinking unicorn blood or sniffing pixie dust, right? Because she looks way too youthful for a woman who reminded us, while picking up her Top 10 Stars award, that she was winning in a category alongside three of her drama sons: Lee Min-ho, Lee Jun-ki, and Jang Geun-seok (Heirs, Iljimae, and You’re Beautiful).

I keep looking back at Yang Jin-sung’s (My Son-in-Law’s Woman) outfit and trying to puzzle it out, because I think I like it, and it’s not indecent or overly short, but somehow it looks like she donned a boyfriend’s shirt on the way to the ceremony and made it work.

I wonder if Korea’s Mom Kim Hae-sook (Yes, That’s How It Is) realized, when she chose the all-white power suit which she’s frankly rocking, that someone else would also opt for the same look?

It’s not quite like wearing the same gown to the same party, but it’s gotta be a little awkward, no? Here’s Kim Ji-young, accepting her award for (Love Is Coming).

Yes, I saw that also. ...... Frankly, I'm a little surprised this detail was overlooked by him and/or his stylist. It's unfortunate because it does kind of ruin the very polished look he's wearing.

On the bright side, it is always great to see Yoo Seung-ho on the red carpet. Looking forward to his next project because he is a very good actor.

No Daesang was not robbed by anyone, Han Seok Kyu really deserved it. He was robbed, Top Excellence supposed to be him, if only Moon Lovers was a hit. Dont view it from talent aspect, because this award based on popularity, and the rating hit. Except Daesang winner who i think purely on acting talent, becase it is Han Seok Kyu we are talking about.

Yes, Han Suk Kyu totally deserve the Daesang so much. I was talking about Top Excellence award rightfully belonged to Lee Joon Gi.

HSK is HSK but be fair. While his performance is good in Doctors but its less promising for a Daesang. Definitely he got it for rating.

Rating over acting so HSK deserved Daesang. While I agree LJG is phenomenal. His portryal of that character was what kept me watching the drama. I would preferred him for Daesang if we talk of performance alone.

But HSK is also good for the character he is playing. Rating (which has more weight) + performance, he deserved the Daesang.

While I love Jun-ki to pieces, his performance is not in the same league as Han Suk-kyu, not even close but I guess we all look at acting differently.

He was not the first to portray Wang-so and I wouldn't say he was the best Wang-so I've ever seen in a sageuk. He is more fitting for a warrior than a king in my opinion.

Would Jun-ki do a better portrayal of King Sejong in TWDR or Doctor Kim? Heck no.

Han Suk-kyu hands down won in acting and rating.

yes han suk kyu won in TWDR ant it was really deasang worthy it was really great but it was not so in doctor kim, really good but not great as TWDR.and yes lee jun ki is not the first to portray wang so,jang hyuk did it too but it was no way comparable in his perforformance in slave hunters.while lee joon gi was phenomenal as wang so,he deserved desang, and i would not ask to give him desang for arang or scholar because his performance was great in it not iconic like wang so.his role as wang so was totally worthy of it

0

would han suk kyu be able to portray a half crazy prince wang so, no way and about wang so perforformed by jang hyuk i would any moment preffer lee joon ki's wang so.and i would not say all the upcomming performance of lee joon gi are great just because his wang so ,gongil, and iljimae were iconic his next performance may not be of this level.praise and critisism must be given for the role currently portrayed not based on actors previous works.

0

Lee Jun-ki is nowhere near Han Suk-kyu's acting caliber in the past and now end of story.

0

no one said lee joon gi is equal to han suk kyu he was phenominal in tree with deep roots.but he was not phenominal in romantic doctor like he was in Tree with deep roots.that is the fact. han suk kyu is still great compared to lee joon gi.
lee joon gi is still improving and by the time he reaches the same age as han suk kyu he will be one hell of an actor.

Rather surprised by the results.
I'm really enjoying LMH in Legend and I think he's doing a great job, so I have no qualms with him getting the top excellence award. Like some have commented above, I don't know why SBS did not split up the Genre and Fantasy categories for this award when they're already dividing the pie everywhere else. I just feel that LJG should have definitely gotten recognition for his outstanding performance in MLSHR. I know ratings are important, but LJG's riveting portrayal of Wang So was what kept me watching. Without him, the whole drama would've flopped completely. At least he got the hallyu star award though it feels like a consolation. He looked gorgeous with IU on the red carpet. I loved their shots! (I don't for the life of me understand how SH got a special acting award.)

I'm happy for PSH since I did like her role in Doctors. The storyline wasn't something that kept my attention, but I liked how she deviated from previous candy type characters that she's always portrayed. I admit I was surprised that JJH had these strange minor awards, but I like both actresses and I'm happy for their wins.

KSE's dress is so lovely and the colour looks great in her. Probably my fave of the night.

Thank you, I completely agree.

The culprit here is SBS. While I am not happy that LJK did not receive an acting award, I am certainly also not happy that people are pointing fingers at LMH or KRW, saying they robbed LKJ of the award. In all honesty, they all deserve to win. I have not watched KRW but I'm sure he was deserving of his award. With LMH, I think his ability to pull off two completely different roles in LOTBS is the best he has ever done, and this is one of his most charming performance since the start of his career so who can argue him receiving this award?

The same goes for PSH and JJH. Because they did not hand JJH an award, PSH is getting criticized. PSH is not at fault, so don't criticize her.

In the end, what I am saying is, don't point fingers at actors and say they robbed your favorite of the award. We can travel around in circles all day doing this.

I don't think anyone is necessarily blaming LMH or KRW for LJG not getting anything. The blame in general seems to be directed towards SBS and the mess they created, but then again we must keep in mind that these are specific awards we're talking about, so its quite hard to say someone deserved this without kinda putting down the person who actually won. Anyway, most of us are sensible people and we all know that SBS was the one that chose the winners and it really is none of the actors' fault.

Right... I'm usually against putting down anyone unless it seems to be a blatant error like SH for the special acting award, which is totoally undeserved in my opinion. I like KRW in Doctors and he did fine there. I am enjoying LMH's performance right now when I usually don't find him enough of a draw for me to watch his dramas. So, I don't have any problems with the recipients though I secretly wish it would be LJG and LMH if I had to pick two out of three.

So happy for PSH. Not a fan of Doctors but I watched the drama solely for her. At times I felt like I was watching Grey's Anatomy lol.
Not a Minshin shipper but I was surprised when LMH nudged PSH implying she should come to the stage to receive KRW's award and PSH being all flustered for a second like "What? Me?".
Another fun moment was when Jang Keun Suk referred to PSH as Go Mi Nam and said it's been four years and she looked beautiful.
Hope to see PSH with KSH in a drama this year!
Also imo istead of Special Acting Award they could rename the awards like Scene stealer or Popularity so the award would make sense because what is the special acting award supposed to be anyway?

Did I see it right? Not only they divide the awards by genre, they also give the award in each category in generous amount, & there's an idol award? it's ridiculous. And on top of it, as if it's not ridiculously enough, they give an award to Baekhyun? I mean Baekhyunnn??? He is a very popular idol who had a huge fanbase which important to gain ratings, I get that. But to give him an award is pretty damn insulting to other great actor who is winning or even not winning any award at all though they're much better than him. Am not against idol actor, but at least please give it to them who really deserves it, i.e D.O Kyungsoo , if there's none then don't give it at all. And what's about that top 10 stars award? Like really, what's the point? @#€%*°¢£

Cause they were already included in last year's award show. Yoo Ah In got the Top Excellence Actor in his category which I think he totally deserved. Wish he got the daesang then too, but that went to Joo Won for Yong Pal. The only show from the earlier half of this year that I thought should have gotten more recognition was Remember, but they won a fair share of awards so I'm content.

Boy, aren't they an adorable couple! For me, they made the day.

It was refreshing to see a drama couple to be so open with their camaraderie. Loved YYS's CPR joke and SHJ's curling fingers! It was one of the best fan service gestures on the show. Too bad the MC got in too fast to snatch the joke. The warm and cozy team atmosphere that should be the secret behind the RDTK success simply oozed thought the show. YYS and SHJ both seemed to be wholeheartedly supporting each other and gave genuine acknowledgement to each other as a 'beloved' partner.

Loooved that they didn't try to hide that they 'enjoyed' the famous kisses!! Especially coming from an actress! At the red carpet, when asked how she felt about the rather abrupt first kiss scene, SHJ simply said 'I loved it." You go, Girl! With YYS trying to be discrete, being shy and all, it was such a SUNBAE moment.

Go, RDTK! The show delivers every single time. It simply gets better and better even when I feel there's nothing to be desired.

Get your list right DB. The Hallyu Star award was given before the Daesang. You should list Hallyu star award right below the Daesang. Don't be propagandanist.

DB is so obvious in how they view some actors/actresses. There was a casting news, where there were a highly respected Chungmuro senior actor and an actress, who has made name in highly successful dramas that were wildly popular in Asia, and the said actress has also mostly positive reviews for her acting. You know how the news was written on here? ’Veteran actor ___, hallyu star ___ and actor *insert a less known name* are going to star a movie. They should really consider how this looks to a casual reader.

Since DB has deleted my post, I am going to write again. I watched the subbed broadcast and yes the Hallyu Star was the second highest honour next to the Daesang. The MC mentioned after the Top Excellene award the they are left with Two Major awards, the only awards which they didn't the the winners beforehand.

Since Javabeans listed the Hallyu Award way down below the list, I don't think she has actually watched the broadcast.

Have not seen any other nominees in their roles so cannot comment on who should or should not have got the award.

Having said that ......I am very happy that Park Shin Hye got the recognition for bringing her multilayered character Yoo Hye Jung alive .....making it memorable for the viewers.....

When one considers that she was able to excel in sensitive portrayal of a character that showed huge promise in the first half of the drama and then stopped developing......one marvels at her ability to make it more interesting than how it was scripted.

She owned it and kept us glued through the 20 episodes. I cannot imagine any other actress playing it this well.

Hence, I have no hesitation in saying that top excellence award was a well deserved one.

Please keep it in mind that I only discussed the role of YHJ here. The cast made this drama a success despite poorly written script. Park Shin Hye and kim Rae won carried it on their shoulders ably supported by rest.

Nice bit of political maneuvering by SBS on awards night. If you want to reward your employees for a job well-done the past year, it's not a bad way to do it. Divvy out the thank-you gifts to reflect their contribution to their overall sales value... it's an interesting idea.

Unlike most, I was very happy that LJG got the Hallyu Star Award which he richly deserves as acknowledgement of Moon Lovers international popularity and the way he connected with overseas fans on social media. While ML may not have been very well-liked on DB, it was enormously popular on other sites and in many countries especially where Chinese is spoken. The fact that the Hallyu award came just before the Daesang symbolized its value in the eyes of those who awarded it.
Like JB says, I think the ML gang was well represented considering they didn't perform well ratings wise in SK and I'm surprised that the heavyweights at SBS even considered us international types in their calculations. But I guess China is a big market these days.
Congratulations to LJG who solidified himself as the Hallyu Star by addressing his international fanbase in our common lingua franca.

Little dissapointed LJG not get Top Excellence Actor, why sbs is so cruel to him?
I prefer LJG than LMH because LMH drama still airing & the character in that story not too identic, can anyone tell me character LMH identic with who from his many dramas?.
But LJG in MLSHR very identic as Wangso & I'm sure anyone who didn't watch his previous drama before MLSHR will recognize him as Wangso & international fans really appreciated MLSHR & that not just because the rating in Korea, why rating in Korea low but MLSHR in international really booming.
Even LJG play in Hollywood now in Resident Evil the Final Chapter even just a couple minutes, that must be the director acknowledge his(LJG) acting.
I'm not blame LMH, I blame sbs who did not appreciate his acting in this drama.
