Sweat and sweetness in new Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-ju teaser

More adorable stills and another fun teaser are out for MBC’s upcoming drama Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-ju. Not only does this new teaser showcase our leads actually engaging in their sports, but we’re also given a glimpse of their friendships and lovelines. Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-ju is a youth sports drama about students at an athletic college passionately pursuing their dreams of representing their country as national athletes and being the best in the game.

Lee Sung-kyung (Doctors) plays our heroine, a young woman who’s only known barbells all her life until she experiences the turbulence of first love at the age of twenty-one. Nam Joo-hyuk (Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo) plays a brilliant swimmer with innate talent who struggles to reach his full potential due to a traumatic incident from the past that continues to plague him.

Kyung Su-jin (Bluebird’s House) plays a type-A rhythmic gymnast with a fervent determination to always win, who suffers immense stress because of it. Our weightlifting fairy sees hearts for the first time when she develops a crush on Lee Jae-yoon (Oh Hae-young Again), an obesity clinic doctor and cousin to Nam Joo-hyuk’s character.

I had doubts about whether or not Lee Sung-kyung would be convincing as a weightlifter, but based on the teaser, I’d say she passes muster; she doesn’t appear too out of place with a barbell. I know she gained some weight for the role, even though she still looks quite slim in my opinion, if not more defined and fit. I love her short and blunt locks; they really complement her tomboy, carefree look. Meanwhile, Nam Joo-hyuk and Kyung Su-jin appear to be in tip-top form, slicing the water in the pool and spinning elegantly on the mat, respectively.

It’s exciting to catch a sneak peek of the sports elements of the drama, but I think I’m more taken by the college campus shenanigans and easy camaraderie among Lee Sung-kyung and her friends. While there’s the thrill of winning and seeing all your hard work pay off in the end, there’s also the thrill of first loves, burgeoning crushes, and just hanging out with your best friends over sizzling grilled meat.

The teaser opens with Lee Sung-kyung’s voice: “People ask me, ‘why do you lift weights?’” followed by Nam Joo-hyuk: “If by chance I didn’t swim, would I have just been an ordinary college student?” We then hear the coach state that he wants his students to find happiness in their love of weightlifting and not in medals or national fame. Nam Joo-hyuk is pretty adorable as he chases Lee Sung-kyung all over campus and pokes like a little kid, asking, “Am I a ghost? Talk to me!”

The caption of the teaser reads, “The pitiful romance of sweaty, twenty-one-year-old, college athletes.” They may be sweaty, but Lee Sung-kyung and Nam Joo-hyuk sure are pretty. Sweat notwithstanding, there’s an energetic and endearing vibe to this feel-good drama that just may take the gold in our hearts.

Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-ju will premiere on November 16 and air on Wednesdays and Thursdays after Shopping King Louis ends its run.

Ouch!

So they are pitted against Lee Min Ho drama.. which I can bet will thrash TRP records...
Even if its a shallow series.. it will probably break DOTs records..

And that means this series will get to bear the brunt of it..
Feel bad for the leads..

One just got over another TRP disaster today.. and the other is leading it for the first time

It won't be easy to beat DOTS rating.. that one is really the craze haha, in fact shows these days are very good to break 20%.. breaking another 38.8%? Seems difficult.. (I personally find and feels these days drama/film that really yield high rating or positive comments/go viral are those that touches one heart with simple yet realistic and touching plot coupled with great meaning/lesson behind.. like DOTS, Moonlight and even Train to busan..)

Anyway there's still KBS one, maybe it wouldn't turn out to be that bad for this drama?? And they got the eye candy factor.. I think many would just watched for that

Its marketed really well..
Has leads who are way more popular than what DOTS leads were at the beginning ( I mean all 4 are popular but still LMH is already a real big craze.. SJK has gone up the ladder.. and JJ is more active and quite famous internationally over SHK .. give all new upcoming audience may not have watched SH's dramas but everyone has heard of sassy girl)

Therefore 20+ is bare minimum and debut rating that I am expecting..

Lucky fror them DOTS is also a shallow drama.. DOTS was lucky that competition was not up to the mark.. slapstick comedy and boring revenge drama..

Lets see how it fares.. but for the leads i wanted it to be a decent success

Hmm i agreed with what u said.. I really wanted to watch DOTS even during the script reading.. And the slowly build up hype made me want to watch it even more.. TLOTBS does have the same feel (But ironically, i actually waited till the whole show is over and even dragged another two months before watching.. maybe the response was too overwhelming that it felt unrealistic and seems like a huge bubble to me. I agree its actually nothing fanciful in terms of plot for DOTS, but some of the scenes were simple like disaster and diseases outbreak, yet they could easily touch one heart and made u feel emotionally connected.. i could understand why its well-received in korea after that)

I dont know the trend of their viewers.. I think it would be the best if the rating does reflect how well a show does (nothing over-rated nor under-rated).. but of course, its not possible haha.. there's too many other factor.. even blind audition dont work nowadays haha

Which is the kBS drama?
Hwarang?... with scarlet's failure i am scared for them.. because there actors look much more less experienced than scarlet..and similar storyline ( in terms of feels.. sageuk..lot of men.. love stories.. fight..politics..them turning againt one another..) may not be able to attract viewers

The KBS drama at that time is "Oh My Geum-Bi"

Hwarang is in dec (mon-tues slots) taking over the man living in another house.. I agree that pre-production drama scares me now (not that they are bad for sure, but i dont know why the audience are so influential in that the broadcast station would edit the show again for them.. i find that re-editing is a big no-no for pre-produced drama especially those up for same time international broadcast in other country (the nightmare of multiple version as a result of it is already turning me off and its like patching one hole to improve the flow or content yet creating another hole- discrepancy or multiple interpretations due to the edit)

Scarlet heart editing is bad in the first place, with the multiple versions, it made it even worse and confusing where scenes dont flow well and makes me think, hello so u want version A or version B..

Agreed with Baek, I think Scarlet's no. 1 problem would be its writing and editing rather than casting. I don't know who is directing and writing Hwarang, but the casting seems ok to me.

What i meant was this experience has such bad memories that audience may be skeptical to give another look alike a fair chance..

Who knows, LMH's drama could flop for all we know. It has really high expectations and hype, which doesn't always translate well to rating. I wouldn't actually expect it to break DoTS record either. YFAS did not even break 30% and KSH is more of a ratings monster than LMH ever was.

And I'm sure nobody is expecting this to have sugar high ratings.

Isn't korea really known for 2 hour study format.. i don't know of any other country where schools are open into the night for kids to study there... and to have special study halls..

so when do youngsters get to watch tv serieals?

Lee Sung Kyung is so out of this world pretty. I want her face. I'm sort of scared to like this drama, but I hope it the best!

It seems like the production tried very hard to make Lee Sung Kyung less pretty. Yet, she's just so pretty; weight gain, bad hair and frumpy clothes can't hide that. Btw her weight gain just makes her look healthier, not fat.

Oyyyy. I know what you mean. As a female weightlifter...I can't XD She looks ok when I ignore how much weight is supposed to be on the bar...? But it doesn't even look heavy for her. They should at least make the fake weights heavy enough so she can act convincingly. I'm ignoring the lack of muscle, that's not her fault and I'm sure she worked hard. So far I'm not sure if I'll watch or not, on the one hand I'm excited that female weightlifters are being shown at all, but on the other I'm going to have to do some serious suspension of disbelief XD

The way I see it, MBC didn't bother to try making some big budget drama to compete with SBS. They planned it well since Shopping King Louie actually ended up performing better than expected, and who knows, maybe those viewers will give WF a chance. In any case, it's not too bad for LSK & NJH since the expectations for this drama are likely to be low anyway. They don't have much to lose, especially for LSK, because it gives her a chance to finally be a lead without too much pressure. All the pressure to succeed is over at SBS.

I wasn't planning on watching this, mainly because I'm not a huge fan of NJH (school2015!! >:c), but the teasers look so cute and fresh!!

Didn't realise this was going to premier on the same day as LMH's drama.. I hope it really brings out the youthfulness of college life.

I think lee sung kyung and nam joohyuk are friends irl so I think their on-screen interactions will look even more natural.

despite the craziness of moon lovers, NJH managed to surprise me with his performance and I really think LSK has a lot of potential to be a good and consistent actress. I think this kind of drama can only benefit them. it's light, funny, with a sweet romance to bring them a lot of fans if they just go by the book. hoping the best for them.

I didn't know that they will share time slot with Legend of the Blue Sea, what a pity. It seems impossible for them to compete, but at least I hope they gather some viewers...

I'm interested in college settings, but for someone reason they feel more like high schoolers to me in the trailers. Maybe they're freshman. And I'm curious about LSK, but NJH still seems stiff in some of the trailer scenes. When his character is supposed to be cute it feels forced and it's somewhat uncomfortable to watch. I'll give the first few episodes a chance though.

Wow! This looks way better than I anticipated. What an adorable teaser. Lee Sung Kyung's portrayal isn't as preposterous as I thought, and she seems quite sweet. Most adorable of all was Nam Joo Hyuk, who takes the cake, as usual.
