Song Ji-eun cast as Sung Hoon’s leading lady in My Secret Romance

Hm, okay, I’m recalibrating my expectations. Last week when I heard that Sung Hoon (Five Kids) was headlining a rom-com drama called My Secret Romance from the 1% of Anything PD, about a couple who has a one night stand and then runs into each other unexpectedly three years later, I was excited because the story sounded fun, and because I’m really enjoying the low-key, natural chemistry and pleasantness of 1% of Anything. Plus, Sung Hoon has been on the rise and I was thinking this might be the one to catapult him into drama leading man status.

Now the leading lady has been cast, and it’s Secret idol Song Ji-eun, whose TV credits include daily drama Sweet Home, Sweet Honey and tvN’s The Superman Age. She’s not a terrible actress… but she’s not a great one, and I’d been so hoping they’d score another talented up-and-comer like Jeon So-min in 1%. Song Ji-eun is still green as an actress, and while there’s no reason she can’t improve in this role, I think it’ll be safer that I be more realistic about my expectations.

Song’s character is a perpetually single young woman with a bright personality who doesn’t do much with her appearance and is rather conservative when it comes to dating—which is why she’s shocked with herself when she has a one-night stand with Sung Hoon’s character, a fun-loving second-generation chaebol. She disappears in the morning, which bothers him more than he likes, and after their encounter, he turns from a partying playboy to a workaholic businessman who loses his mojo. Three years later, they’re both surprised when she shows up as his company’s new nutritionist, and initially pretend not to know each other. What ensues is a conflicted push-pull romance as they feel their reignited attraction and wonder if an encounter that began as a one-night stand could become a more meaningful relationship.

My Secret Romance will be fully pre-produced and is planning to begin filming soon, for a premiere next year.

my first thought after reading all these idol-casting articles.

Minah did it, Nana did it, Key did it maybe she can also.

Good thoughts!!!!

Key was good. I was disorientated because I was so used to him displaying dancing skills. But then we had this satoori speaking layabout in DS.

Yes, Key absolutely nailed it! It was such a pleasant surprise! I seriously replayed some of his parts because I couldn't believe it was him acting

But yes, here's to hoping this will become a pleasant surprise as well

Key was just amazing in DS! Every single time he was "singing " that Bach toccata, I was cracking up.

I didn't know Minah, and really liked her too.

I still didn't finished The Good Wife, but i loved the original Kalinda so much that I find difficult to love Nana. But she is not bad.

Damn I've reread the plot but now it is going to have to hinge on chemistry. If she is wooden AND an idol who is not allowed to kiss properly... * grumbles, grumbles *

I am not a SH fan as much as a fan of this type of romance. He has improved in his acting but it will be way nicer if the viewers could be confident he was acting with a better actress. I hope she emotes well and don't do the bug eyed look to emote.

The character is described as having a "bright" personality, which always sets off warning bells for me. It means she is going to be cute, perky, hard-working, not too smart, and have the sex appeal of a nice handbag: great to look at, but uncomfortable in the clinches.

I don't think we have to worry about her acting chops, because she is basically going to be playing the role that idol girls do all the time. As long as you don't mind fun and shallow, it's all good.

I hope it'll be great cause after watching 'wonderful life' i don't feel like another 'one night stand' show is a good idea, but i will give it a shot. Its a kdrama, right?

Honestly, even though I like him, Sung Hoon still has some room for improvement in his acting as well. I was hoping that they would cast someone he could feed off of (he and Shin Hye Sun's chemistry helped both of their performances in Five Children) but I feel like we might be having the blind leading the blind with this casting.

T.T

I was really excited when I heard Sung Hoon was cast as the main lead and I live for cliche plot like this, which is why I'm enjoying 1% of anything.

But, why Ji-Eun??? There's so many more talented rookie actress out there.

I don't really mind idol-actors and I'm always happy when my expectation of them turns out wrong. But more often than not, shows tend to do better when both leads are actors.

I'm curious as to people who say Sung Hoon needs improvement, in which areas?

I. myself, was really impressed with his late start and how well he did in his first role in New Tales of the Gisaeng.

I'm wondering what others see as lacking that I must be blinded by his looks. lol

He is OK, but he needs a good partner, which means a partner which on par with him or slightly better. You know I finished Gisaeng just for him although his leading lady made me cringe all time. But nowadays his acting has been better than before and that's great.

So sad... Why do they keep giving these idols leading roles when they need to stick to supporting roles until they learn to act? Why do we all need to suffer from their lack of experience, and the poor leading man too?

Exactly what I am thinking. Not only the idols, but some actors who already landing leading roles despite of very poor acting. We have cases some actors keep landing leading roles, but yet no slightest improvement.

Well, my interest in this drama went down a few notches.
It's just I'm indifferent to Song Ji Eun. Not someone who excites me. But I'm not familiar with her acting so maybe she'll be good in this.

I realized I mixed her up with her former group member, Han Sun-hwa.... But anyway, I feel the same about both of them.

I agree, Sunghoon still needs to improve and an actress would have been better, cause two leads still not that great is a disaster, the only thing that could save it is a really good script, otherwise Blood 2.0 might happen, tho Blood actually had good script and direction, lol

Hmmm.. are you sure you got the correct Sung Hoon? He wasn't in Blood. It was Ahn Jae Hyun, Goo Hye Sun's husband, who was also the leading lady of Blood.

I am sure I got correct Sung Hoon, I meant dramawise, bad choice of leads ruined Blood, I love Sung Hoon but only saw him in Five Kids and his acting felt a bit wooden to me, so he needs a good partner imo

Idk if she is popular enough for them to bet on her as a female lead, they either couldn't find anyone better or thinking her fandom will make ratings, which I doubt cause her group was inactive for about two years. Can it be her company used some connections to stuck her in ?

Already cast?? It's like they knew we would be unhappy about their choice of leading lady. Hoping for the best.

I follow Godinmedia on instagram and they actually defended the choice much to my surprise. People usually don't respond to negative reactions to casting. They feel confident so maybe it will turn out good although I am skeptical.

I don't know why they keep casting idols as leads rather than actresses', why can't they be given a supporting roles but lead? Just annoying, not watching K2 nor did I watch Moon Lovers for that reason....actually any drama with an idol as a lead I don't watch with the exception of Eric from Shinhwa because he actually is a good actor, no matter how good the plot sounds if it's idol lead I can't bring myself to watch it because their acting just....suckslol

You didn't watch K2 just because an idol is part of the main cast? lmao you're missing out. There were hardly any criticism on Yoona's acting in The K2. She gained even further recognition for her role there. It upsets me there's so much idol-actor prejudice going on. Especially when you don't even bother checking out at least one or two episodes before judging "Oh an idol, the acting must suck."

This reminds me of that secondary couple in Dalja. The playboy losing his mojo after the cool tv host sleeps and breaks up with him.

I'm disappointed with the casting of her as the leading lady. After watching five children, I became a fan of his and was excited he got a lead role. I had high expectations that they would choose the right actress, but they fell short. He had off the charts chemistry with Shin Hye Sun, and I thought they would pair him with an actress just as talented or even cast her as the lead. Now ? I'm not so excited to watch this drama. When it comes out, I'll wait to read the reviews and decide if it's worth my time or not....

Wow the amount of hate and prejudice on idol actors is toxic. Give people some chance at oppurtunity, nobody started in the acting business best actor right away. I know there are exceptions but please stop the prejudice. Shame on you people, do not watch if you dont want to, no one needs your negativity. Everyone deserves a shot on success. I have watched 4 episodes and their chemistry was astounding. Sung Hoon improved and Ji Eun is a natural in her role. If youre not enjoying well I do but pls keep your prejudices on both actors to yourselves, no one needs such disgraceful/discouraging comments. Before you jump to conclusions try to stand on the producers/directors shoes. This is a 12 - ep drama, how much budget do they have, i bet they pay idol actors a meager salary compared to establish actors/actresses. These idols dont get much money and then people bash them on top of that.
