Purple raincoat serial killer on the loose in OCN’s Voice
by tineybeanie
Two new dark teasers for OCN’s upcoming crime-thriller drama Voice have been released. Starring Jang Hyuk (Beautiful Mind) and Lee Hana (Unkind Women), the plot is about two police call center dispatchers who are determined to track down a serial murderer that has caused them to lose their families.
The two leading characters are entwined by the killer who ruined their lives. Jang Hyuk plays a washed-up former star detective who lives with a bone-deep guilt for not preventing the death of his wife, who was murdered by the serial killer. He is relegated to the police call center, where he meets Lee Hana’s character. She is a genius voice profiler who can tell the minute differences in the mewlings of individual street cats. Her father, who was also an honorable policeman, died in pursuit of the serial killer. Together they form a team to go after their greatest enemy.
Eerily, we don’t see anyone in the first teaser. The camera just pans to the trunk of an isolated car under a bridge. But suddenly, the trunk moves, and we hear a female victim’s cry and pounding from within: “Please save me!” Then there’s a final muffled whisper from her, saying, “I can’t hold out much longer.”
Combined with the second teaser, we get a better picture of what we can possibly expect in the upcoming drama. Both contain the same tag lines: “The golden time is three minutes. To save the victim who is on the perilous crossroads between life and death.” In the second teaser, the female victim calls the police from within the trunk of the car. Their conversation goes like this:
112: Yes, you’ve reached the police dispatch center.
Victim: Please save me!
112: May I ask where you are?
Victim: I don’t know. I can’t see anything.
112: Can you hear any identifying sounds around you?
Victim: Here…
But the victim is cut off when a sinister figure in a hooded raincoat, surrounded by a halo of rain, suddenly opens the trunk. The 112 dispatcher tries to get the victim to respond again, but it’s too late. Dum. Dum. Dum.
Lighter side note: It could just be me overthinking things, but I had a total deja vu moment while watching these. They resembled the K2 teasers so much that I half-expected the raincoat man to pull back his hood and be revealed as Ji Chang-wook. From the purple-blue lighting to the whole trunk-of-a-car setting, the teasers are so similar, except for the sudden dark turn that these take.
Mystery thriller OCN’s Voice will begin in January of next year.

Look man we are getting an actress who on a bad day can act circles round some of the so called idol-actresses. Plus an age appropriate pairing.
We have a known genre and actors. I would say we are already getting a headstart in the drama watchabilty factor. Plus a station and director who knows what they are doing.
After the recent spate of dizzying bad swirling camerawork. All action dramas that fall flat on plot. Over emoting. You have no idea how thankful I am getting to watch a police drama and just focus on the plot and writing.

But Byu didn't even say that he/she prefer an idol-actress, he/she just don't think Lee Hana is good enough for the role. For me, i have no problem with her casting since this drama is going to focus more on Jang Hyuk rather than the female lead. I would have preferred someone else if this were going to be a female-centric drama like the initial setup before they cast Jang Hyuk.
On the other note, yes, i think this is going to be good. I can't wait to see Jang Hyuk in action.

Same goes to me. Not intended to underestimate Lee Hana, but i don't think her role is big enough for us to make a fuss for it. This is going to be male-centric drama, and like the usual OCN dramas, it will focus at least 75% for the male part.

Thank you for this comment! I'm so tired of the same comment about the leading lady. Every article about this drama is filled with these types of comment. So frustrating. She's nowhere near a s bad as other idols or new actresses. I watched her in Unkind Woman and she was fine, not brilliant but fine none the less.

Why? She wasn't even in this teaser. Are some fans still in the "Ew she's not good enough for oppa" mode? I really hope you've seen more than just High School King of Savvy, if you're going to complain about her.

Comments like that make my head spin. How the hell is she a "let down". I've seen them in the past call her ugly, and this is no different.

+1 for taking cautionary measures while watching this.
My mum came up behind me RIGHT as the trunk popped (and believe me, she was not amused when her 'have you done the dishes' was answered with shrill shrieking).
Will be watching all future teasers and eps with my back to the wall >.<

Wait- the FEMALE lead is the genius this time? Come one, come all! A miracle in dramaland! I do tend to roll my eyes whenever a main character is classed as a geeeennniiuuus (why can't they ever just be -I dunno- good at their job?) but the fact that it's the female lead this time definitely makes me a lot more interested.
But jeez louise- that boot-opening scared the bejeezus out of me. Don't think I'll be watching this one at night...

Gotta hand it to rufuru, I think they've hit the nail right on the head. I mean yeah, we always have super talented women here and there, but I don't remember anyone getting called a geniuuuuus before (it really does seem to be a title reserved solely for men.)
That said, I'm still annoyed we've got another male lead who's devastated because his wife was killed. Like seriously??? That old song again?
Y'know once, just once, I'd love to see a crime thriller kdrama with a female lead who dramatically lost her husband to violence instead. I mean, what, men can't get killed in dramaland unless they're old and beloved grumpy old dads???????

Lol, its so funny( and kinda sad) that dramaland has desensitized us to such tragedy that one goes " so his wife was brutally killed? Meh, next! "

Lolol, true. X'D dramaland, what have you done to our souls???
Tbh, while I do get annoyed at seeing it done over and over again, I think my real problem with the dead wife cliche --beside it never being the dead husband, that is, lol-- is more that I feel like dramas tend to use the concept kind of...idk, callously?
Like, "Oh mc's beloved wife died and the guilt eats away at him every night... until his new love comes along and heals away all his grief and trauma! Now that the dead wife is no longer a convenient obstacle to the show's otp, she is relegated to a throwaway tragic detail, unseen beyond the occasional flashback to her death when mc's new lady love is in danger!"
Like, don't get me wrong, I'm not against people moving on and finding happiness with someone else after a tragic loss. It's just that the way they do it in dramas/stories is just so...idk, disturbingly easy, to the point that it feels a little callous and disrespectful.
Like, instead of treating the dead wife like an actual person who was legitimately loved and grieved over, they're relegated to just being this...convenient, disposable obstacle to the mc's happiness. The ease characters get over their dead beloveds sometimes just really rubs me the wrong way.
That said, I do love it when they use the dead beloved cliche and actually go through the motions of grief properly. For example, I felt like Five Children (no spoilers!) really handled the whole concept of grief and guilt and moving on with this amazing level of respect and grace.
Like, they gave the mc time to grieve, time to realise he could fall in love again, time to be in denial that he could fall in love again, time to accept that, and time to let go and move on. That was a really lovely, classy example of the dead wife cliche done right.
...But then, Five Children was a 54 episode weekend drama, and most primetime shows are 16 eps lol.
So I guess what I mean to say is that, realistically, I get that trying to show grief and moving on in a short perod is a very hard thing to ask, and I guess most writers work with what they have the best that they can. I just still can't help but wish that I could one day see a primetime kdrama handle the moving on concept as well as Five Children did.
BUT, my giant dead wife rant aside lol. As others have already mentioned, OCN rarely concentrates on romance anyway so I doubt I'll even have to worry about any of the stuff I just went on and on about lolol.

there's a good chance that there might not even be romance involved. i think the only OCN drama i watched that had a story based around romance was my beautiful bride and even then it turned out to be more of a thriller instead

Loved Jang Hyuk in Beautiful Mind and Lee Hana in High School King, so this casting is working just fine for me. I hope the drama preserves the chilling atmosphere of the teasers and develops the story in interesting ways. Not too fond of the male lead's description since it feels it's been done so many times before, but I like that it seems we'll be getting a competent and genius female lead for once. I hope their partnership reaches I Remember You levels of awesomeness. Probably one of the very few upcoming dramas I'm looking forward to, hope it won't disappoint.

what if...just think about this for a second...what if no one was a genius? and everyone just worked really hard to catch the bad guy, flaws and all? i don't understand the dramaland obsession with genius this and that...yah, they exist but they're not running rampant everywhere. it would be nice if these people were just normal people who worked really hard to be great at their jobs. maybe the term is just being overused?
anyhow...not sure i will be tuning because i was looking forward to bae doona in the role. i have a love/hate relationship with lee hana's acting.
