Youthful love and big dreams in Weightlifting Fairy’s first teaser
by girlfriday
There’s a warm, sunny energy to the first teaser for MBC’s new youth sports drama Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-ju, which introduces the fluttering excitement between two young athletes training to achieve their dreams. Lee Sung-kyung (Doctors) takes on her first leading role as weightlifter Kim Bok-ju, a shy girl with a passionate heart who’s only known barbells her whole life until the age of twenty-one, when she encounters her first love.
The college campus drama tells the story of ambitious athletes struggling to become national representatives in sports like weightlifting, swimming, and rhythmic gymnastics. Nam Joo-hyuk (Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo) co-stars as a naturally gifted swimmer who hasn’t figured out how to overcome a trauma that’s holding him back. His cousin, an obesity clinic doctor played by Lee Jae-yoon (Oh Hae-young Again), is the heroine’s first crush, and Kyung Su-jin (Bluebird’s House) is an overachieving gymnast burdened by the stress of being the ace.
The show’s first teaser is cheerful and cute, with a “fluttering excitement” theme in the captions: “Fluttering today. Fluttering now. Fluttering us.” Nam Joo-hyuk and Lee Sung-kyung seem to have an easy, friendly rapport, which makes me hopeful for the pairing. I like that they’re both bright characters who are serious about their dreams, and if they end up having a cute friends-to-lovers romance, I might actually like this drama more than I expected. I’m mostly interested because it’s a female-centric drama about an athlete, but I certainly won’t say no to adorable afternoon naps in the park.
Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-ju follows Shopping King Louis on Wednesdays and Thursdays beginning November 16.

I'm getting a Heartstrings vibe from the teasers of this drama. So excited!!!
But, why does she have to have that haircut? Just why.

agree about the haircut, it looks like a 3 years old haircut, maybe if there were no bangs it would've looked prettier.

I have to admit I kinda like the goofy, no-so-attractive haircut on her. As someone else already commented, she usually plays not-so-nice roles and she always looks really pretty, so I like how she is going for a totally different look and character this time around. Not to imply that women who are weightlifters can't look how she usually does, but if she isn't gonna gain 50 lbs and bulk up, they have to give us something to help us buy in on this... ??

Trailer's looking really good, but it's kind of giving me the same feels that Doctor did: visually appealing with a light&fluffy atmostphere--but threatens to remain just light and fluffy? Idk it looks promising though.

:( I need more of these trailer while waiting for the show haha..
But yea its suppose to be simple, light and fluffy type.. Guess the darkest aspect is probably those problems/challenges faced, difficulties, struggles and conflicts with self and others.. Should be sweet like candy for the eye most of the time..
The story seems simple and straightforward, as in not those with complex twist or thinking.. It seems like any teenage and athlete can relate to easily..

LSK looks good with the lifting (which is what i worried the most.. but she seems ok in the trailer.. lets wait till the show to see the full picture.. but i think im pleased with her performance :) fighting!!)
Why NJH face looks strange to me in the 3rd photo as of the blog post (i couldnt recognise thats him at a glance, its like giving me a totally different feel, maybe is the angle..)
Looking forward to the show cause of the story..

YG must have done some major arm twisting or perhaps invested in this drama for BOTH of the artistes to have leading roles.
Looks refreshing and cute though I'm not into sports dramas. Hope it's good.

Nooo why is this on the same days as Legend of the Blue Sea?? And why is Nam Joo-hyuk in this, forcing me to watch both? And why do I always have an actor catch my eye just at the perfect time for their latest upcoming project to take up all of my time?
(I shouldn't complain. This is exactly what happened with Moonlight -- I had zero interest in that show until I watched I Remember You and fell in love with Park Bo-gum. And then it turned out that the sure-to-be-a-fluffy-little-ball-of-cliches was a special kind of magic that owned my whole heart.)
This trailer does look really cute though. ^^

KBS, MBC and SBS have another competition. 3 new dramas will star in one day. They also PR in one day too: MBC drop a new teaser, SBS drop a news picture, KBS drop a new stills (although they just started filming).

Lol, it's funny how she's struggling to lift 20 lbs in the trailer. 20 lbs is what they start you off on when you've never lifted before. Kinda silly when she's supposed to a competitive world champion.

She isn't a world champion yet. It's a coming off age/finding your dream story. I think you might have read a wrong synopsis for the drama.

Don't forget the bar itself is 45-55lbs! So she's at least lifting 65+lbs there. Most women I know work out with just their bodyweight, so that's not too bad, considering.

Bars can be 10 or 15 lbs. So she is lifting 35 maximum in that scene. Kinda kills the illusion right there.

Oh interesting. All bars like that at my gym are 45 lbs. Call me an apologist or whatever, but I'm a form person. I'm more impressed with people that can do perfect form squats without any weight than people that do weighted squats with horrible form. So many crossfitters I know with bad form show off their heavy squats on their Instagram.

I need more of the light-hearted drama filled with sunshine and rainbow after watching many "heavy" and "makjang" dramas

50% pre produced? No wonder, I was still curious why theres picture of filming as early as mid sept for some scenes (when other drama seems to be having tight schedule..) hopefully early start, the quality might be better especially since they are not that experienced yet, at least this time "time" isn't a big issue for the lack of quality..

Oh man…*facepalm* … I can't take this seriously.
I know, I know…we can't expect a wispy model to put on 50 or some pounds for a role that's to be of a weightlifter, but oh goodness, the scenes of lifting 20 pounds made me laugh (for the record, I lift). I'm just waiting to see how she transforms herself into a lifter, because right now I'm not buying it.
I wish they'd picked a non-model actress, or perhaps someone with a little larger frame or heavier body set….I think Lee Si Young would have been perfect considering she's an actress and an amateur boxer.
Anyway, I really really hope this show surprises me.

Yeah, it's a pity because there are a lot of sports that a skinny girl like her could do. Not sure why they had to go this direction. I guess we will find out soon.
I find Lee Sung Kyung very likable and with potential as an actress, and I see the drama will not fall short on the eye candy factor, thanks to Nam Yoo Hyuk, hehe! It seems worth to check the first episode at least :)

That's because she is doing the actual activity lifting in the drama.. on the appearance wise, she's not that convincing.. (she Is hot as a model and is so tall too) and most felt that there's many other more suitable candidate (though not perfect) for the role naturally instead of having the need of finding someone who got to do extreme increase weight and engaging heavy intensive training just for the role (might not be obvious or can't see now, but there might be after-effects on the body..)
after seeing posts and comments, I agree, not all weightlifter physique must be big and bulky.. and I admire her efforts for the role in training and commitment.. so I shall watch the drama and see for myself
U can't really compare to saeguk, unless that character in story is well-known to be ugly or have certain prominent characteristics like scar, very short etc that everyone knows (then it could be a little off, but even drama these days take "Creative license and changes plot dramatically")

Its like referring to W.. where every role/character got its purpose, setup and story.. since her role is setup as weightlifter, she can't escape not being judge by one for that..
As for beautiful & pretty princes/princess.. unless it's outline in the role that the character is suppose to be ugly and yet they find a pretty cast for it.. if not what's the big deal..

I think it'd be better to watch the show first before scrutinizing her looks. We'll get plenty of time to do that when and if the show sucks. They're going against popularity heavyweights so atleast give them a chance to demonstrate their work before attacking them.

Please don't get me wrong.. I'm not attacking her.. in fact if u refer to my previous comments here or even other related post.. I praised and admired her effort in the role (and I'm definitely giving her a chance and waiting till the drama starts and see for myself..)
I'm just saying to franbergh and Sss that there are bound to have critics or complaints.. at least the point being pointed out is something logical and they do have a point there, it's not just pure hate or oppose for the sake of opposing (if not why would she even bulk up and train for the role)

LSK looks good despite sporting that 'I'm 3 years old and I demand to cut my own hair' hair style. hahaha
I like the youthful vibes the teaser gives but can the drama continue to be just that? I always got fooled by teasers. Fluffy and rainbows and unicorn and then bam! the actual drama gave me tears and blood and endless suffering. Why show~

I read some rumors on Korean communities that in the beginning it was kind of difficult to find female actress willing to gain weight for this role.
I love Sung Kyung and am very excited for this drama but really, I have to admit she's too tall that even though she gained like 4 or 5kg she still looks skinny.
But I still admire her efforts and dedication for her first lead so I will watch it and accept its fantasy cause... well it's a drama...
Anyway, if they just wanted to portray the heroine as someone not so girly (and considering they couldn't find the most suitable actress) they could have picked another sports. The story itself is pretty much interesting and both Sung Kyung and Joo Hyuk already have good chemistry so I think the drama would still do good even if it was not about weightlifting.
I can foresee (actually already saw) lots of negative comments on Lee Sung Kyung, it kinda makes me sad cause I really like her and this is her first drama as a female lead...
