Shopping King Louis: Episode 7

Bok-shil gets a taste of the good life, and gains a few life lessons as well, mostly in the area of how (not) to cater to a king. Louis isn’t having such an easy time of it, as he experiences things like jealousy and anger for the first time, as far as he remembers. Personal growth is painful but necessary, and luckily for Louis and Bok-shil, they have a magical ability to become stronger together no matter what they’re going through.

EPISODE 7: “Perhaps Love”

When Joong-won finds Louis’s note saying he’s going back to Bok-shil, he follows Louis all the way back to the rooftop apartment. He arrives in time to see Louis embracing Bok-shil, relieved that she’s safe and sound. The sight makes Joong-won pause, and he thinks, “I want to know what it is that I’m feeling.”

When the schoolgirls later tell Bok-shil (for a hefty bribe) that her brother often sleeps in a certain pool hall, she runs right over. But when Bok-shil arrives, she’s told that nobody has seen Bok-nam in over a month.

While she’s out, an intruder sneaks into Bok-shil’s apartment where Louis is waiting, and when he finds a man inside, he slams a hammer down on his head. Bok-shil returns home to find her street swarming with cops, and the neighbors saying the serial murderer has returned. Assuming the assaulted man is Louis, she jumps into the back of the ambulance.

But as soon as she sees the victim’s face, she realizes that it’s not Louis who was attacked. Ohthankgoodness. Louis is just as concerned when he comes home to learn that someone was attacked, but luckily In-sung is there to tell him that the person he found was a stranger.

Bok-shil calls In-sung’s phone when Louis can’t answer his (it’s inside and the police won’t let him in), and Louis tells her that he wasn’t home because he went to pick her up. Bok-shil tells him to stay at In-sung’s until she gets home.

The investigating detective, who happens to be Joo-hyuk’s work friend, gathers some information from Louis. He’s surprised when Louis sheepishly says he doesn’t know his family name, and In-sung explains about his lost memory. The detective gives Louis a close look, and decides to fingerprint him.

Joo-hyuk arrives to check out the scene and recognizes Bok-shil’s address. He asks Louis why he didn’t tell him they lived in a home where a murder took place, and Louis says that they didn’t know.

Ma-ri reports her findings to her father — that the person who died in the accident wasn’t Louis, but Bok-shil’s brother (she thinks). She says that Louis is living with Bok-shil until she finds her brother, but as far as she knows, Joong-won isn’t involved. But Director Baek can’t shake his feeling that Joong-won knows something.

He makes a call, but a nurse answers the phone. She says that the owner of the phone is in emergency surgery for a head wound, and Director Baek hangs up, shaken. Oh no, was it Scarface who was attacked?

The police can’t identify the victim, and Joo-hyuk thinks he may be an illegal immigrant. He heads to the hospital to get the man’s phone, hoping his call history will give a clue as to his identity.

Bok-shil and Louis confront In-sung and his mother for not telling them their apartment was the scene of a murder, and In-sung’s mom offers to let them stay at her place to make it up to them. The four of them go to bed on the floor packed in like sardines, and Mom explains that she never expected another attack to happen or she would have told them.

Bok-shil tells Mom that she was out tonight looking for her brother, but she couldn’t find him. In-sung and Mom gasp at the amount Bok-shil paid for the clue (nearly a thousand dollars, and Mom asks incredulously if it’s Bok-shil’s job to get conned, ha). Louis tells Bok-shil he’ll get her money back, and Mom tells her not to believe a dummy like Louis.

Bok-shil wonders if the man who was attacked was a burglar, but Mom is more worried about the identity of the attacker. They wonder if a serial killer lives in their neighborhood, and when Louis asks why the detective asked him so many questions, In-sung thinks they might be suspecting him. Louis and Bok-shil both pop up at that, and Mom screams for everyone to go to sleep.

In the morning, Mom makes breakfast, and Louis asks Bok-shil for ham and coffee. Bok-shil sweetly asks Mom for them, earning a glare, but Louis gets his wish. He hogs all the ham, blissfully unaware of everyone else’s discomfort, then asks Bok-shil to get him water and more ham. Bok-shil jumps up to get them, but Mom blows up when Louis orders fish for dinner.

Reporters are crawling all over the apartment, and soon the attack is reported on the news. Director Baek, Jae-sook, and Ma-ri all see the news report, and Ma-ri thinks the building looks familiar. Director Baek looks like he’s in shock as he turns off the television, and he cryptically tells his wife to go to Busan and make sure Grandma doesn’t watch the news.

Jae-sook goes, but not before posting on social media that she’s unhappy to be going alone. Joong-won’s mom Young-ae sees her post, and wonders what Jae-sook does for a living if she travels alone. She analyzes the selca Jae-sook posted, noting the nice car and that Jae-sook seems to have a chauffeur.

Joo-hyuk doesn’t find anything on the victim’s phone that leads to his identity, and all the calls are registered under someone else’s name, so he wonders if he’s a hitman. His friend found Louis’s fingerprints on the hammer, but Joo-hyuk defends him, saying there’s no way he was the attacker.

Bok-shil and Louis are brought in for questioning, and Louis meekly says in his defense that he used the hammer to peel garlic. Bok-shil swears Louis is a gentle person, as Louis sits there looking like a kicked puppy.

Joong-won spends his day off with his parents, and lucky for him, his father insisted on doing the cooking. When his mom runs off for the plum extract, Joong-won and Dad both go face-down in their bowls, scarfing down the food before she gets back and ruins it.

Mom asks Joong-won to reassure her that nothing’s going on between him and the naked kid, and he says he just took him in out of pity. They see the assault report on the news, and Joong-won recognizes Bok-shil’s place. He calls her, and rushes over to the police station on his bike.

The detective’s personal questions seem to have depressed Louis, and he sadly asks Bok-shil how old he is. She figures he’s younger than her since he acts like such a kid, and he moans that not knowing anything about himself is scary.

Bok-shil says that he may have been a monk who didn’t know about the world, or a rich kid who spent a lot of money. Louis pouts that maybe he was an orphan or chased by loan sharks, or even married. Bok-shil looks dismayed at the possibility.

She tells Louis, “You’re a kind, beautiful, and lovely person. I can tell.” Louis looks like he could cry, and grabs Bok-shil in a big hug. Hee, they get a round of applause from a gang of thugs.

Joong-won stomps in and bellows when he sees them hugging. He learns that the fingerprints on the weapon make Louis look pretty guilty, and since he left his phone at home they can’t track it to prove he left the house.

Joong-won offers to be Louis’s personal reference, and Joo-hyuk speaks up that he will, too. He hands over a photo of the victim’s shoeprints, and Louis’s brain immediately recognizes the tread pattern. They’re an expensive custom-made brand of cycling shoes, which makes the tread unique to each individual wearer.

Louis is released, and he’s curious how he knows so much about cycling shoes, so he asks to borrow Joong-won’s bike. He can’t even get upright, which kills that theory, ha. Joong-won tells them both to stay at his place for now, for their safety.

The police let them get their things, and since Louis is still sore, Bok-shil carries most of it. Joong-won can’t let that stand and drapes their bags over his bike, then has to struggle to keep it vertical, ha. He curses Louis the entire way, grumbling that they must have been enemies in a past life.

Jae-sook brings Grandma Louis’s watch, which she had restored (after Director Baek used the blood for the DNA test). Butler Kim asks Jae-sook privately why she moved the box where he kept Louis’s baby teeth, and why one tooth is missing. Jae-sook admits that her husband asked her to take it, but she doesn’t know why.

Assistant Jung-ran eavesdrops on them, and she calls Director Baek to ask why he wanted the watch and tooth. He’s horrified, but he pretends it’s nothing important while he orders Ma-ri to call her mother. But Jae-sook is too busy talking to Grandma to answer her phone.

Bok-shil is impressed by Joong-won’s place, and Louis asks her to draw him a bath (while telling Joong-won to man up as he staggers under the weight of their stuff, lol). Joong-won stops Bok-shil, and tells Louis to draw him a bath instead, and Bok-shil snarls at Louis until he grudgingly complies.

Bok-shil apologizes for Louis while he’s out of the room, which just makes Joong-won angrier. He snaps at her to stop apologizing, and also to stop saying thank you. Instead, he tells her to get Louis to say it, and to stay out of his way.

He gives Bok-shil his study to use as a bedroom, and tells her not to touch his things, to help herself to the fridge, and where to handle laundry and trash. She wonders why, if he wanted to be left alone, he keeps hovering around her.

Joong-won brings Bok-shil some blankets and offers to make the bed for her, but she tries to take them to do it herself. They wrestle over control, and Joong-won trips and falls onto the couch, dragging Bok-shil on top of him. Someone’s heart pounds, and they freeze, until Louis walks into the room.

Bok-shil starts to explain, and Joong-won stops her and says there’s nothing to explain. He stomps out and Louis asks Bok-shil not to get so close to Joong-won. She tells Louis to be nice, so he flops on the couch and demands a backrub. She smacks him instead, and he flounces out like a pouting toddler.

Grandma wants to watch the news, and Jae-sook is unsuccessful in redirecting her attention. They see story about the police looking for a man who was seen running through the streets topless covered in pain patches, and everyone stares to see Louis on television, alive and well.

Butler Kim’s eagle eyes scan the man on the TV, and he concludes that it really is their Louis. He rushes to look into it, and Jae-sook calms Grandma when she hyperventilates.

Joong-won watches incredulously as Bok-shil and Louis greedily tuck into dinner, both making huge messes of themselves. Louis demands another bowl of noodles, which Joong-won refuses, until Bok-shil also asks for more — soon they’ve put away several bowls each.

Louis demands, “Bok-shil, water!” and again Joong-won stops her when she starts to jump up. He gets the water and fills Bok-shil’s glass first, then Louis spills his glass all over the table. Bok-shil leaps up to get a towel, and Joong-won yells at her and tells Louis to clean up after himself.

Hee, he gets one little tissue to soak up a whole glass of water, and Joong-won huffs at his helplessness and grabs a towel. He suddenly realizes that he’s become Louis’s butler, and clenches the towel in his fist and growls.

In Louis’s defense, he offers to wash the dishes, but Joong-won tells them to just go watch TV. They catch a drama about a guy with amnesia whose girl leaves him, then regrets it when he turns out to be a chaebol, ha. Louis calls to Joong-won for a cup of coffee, but when Bok-shil says she’ll do it, Joong-won gets the coffee just to keep her from having to.

Jung-ran calls Director Baek again, to tell him they saw Louis on television. Butler Kim went to Seoul to look for Louis, and Grandma had to take a tranquilizer to calm down. Director Kim slumps, and tells Jung-ran to just look after Grandma for now.

He immediately gets the same call from his wife, and he looks like he swallowed a cat when she preens that she was responsible for Grandma seeing a show. He screams, “Why are you doing this to me?!” and hangs up on her.

When Joong-won catches Bok-shil soaking rice for breakfast, he tells her to let him handle meals. He tries to take the bowl but she hangs on tightly, and they end up dumping the rice all over the floor. Bok-shil smiles and decides to give Joong-won a nickname, “Only-Bad-in-Words,” because he sounds mean but his actions are nice.

He scoffs that he was ever nice, and orders Bok-shil to clean up the mess. She says again that she’ll make breakfast to pay him back for letting them stay, and gives Joong-won the sweetest smile when he turns to look at her. He goes all gooey, seeing her in soft fuzzy lighting with sparkles all around her.

Louis walks in and sees this scene, and he goes to bed cranky. He tosses and turns, wondering what exactly he’s feeling.

He’s got panda-eyes the next morning from lack of sleep, and he tells Bok-shil honestly that his heart feels uneasy. She doesn’t know what he means, and he watches closely as she sets up breakfast until she snaps that he’s bugging her.

Joong-won enters the room, and OMG he’s wearing one of the limited edition Louis Sssaton jackets, Number 100. Louis happens to be wearing his knockoff jacket, and Joong-won makes sure he knows that his jacket is genuine. Louis sniffs, and mutters that his gut is telling him he used to wear Number 1.

Feeling peevish, Louis knocks the food off Joong-won’s chopsticks every time he reaches for something. He tells Joong-won that only he can eat the food that Bok-shil cooks, and he repeats it to Bok-shil when she asks what’s wrong with him. He’s so upset that he even refuses the money Bok-shil offers when she leaves for work.

He doesn’t want Joong-won taking her to work either, and invites himself along for the ride. He scoffs at Joong-won’s nice car, saying that he thinks he used to have a nicer one, and over a hundred pairs of shoes, and a house like a castle. Louis jumps in the front seat when Bok-shil opens the door, just to keep her from sitting next to Joong-won, pfft.

Butler Kim goes to talk to the PD of the show Louis was featured on, and they agree to search for Louis together. Grandma asks Jung-ran to go to Seoul and help Butler Kim, and though she objects at first, she eventually packs a bag.

She pouts to Jae-sook that she hates Butler Kim, but Jae-sook tells Jung-ran that he’s a good man. Jung-ran asks why he’s still single if he’s so great, and she betrays a tiny grin when Jae-sook guesses he just hasn’t met the right person. When Jae-sook offers to ask Grandma not to send Jung-ran, Jung-ran is all, Well, I should obey orders…

Louis spends his morning repeatedly texting the schoolgirls, “Give back the money.” He gets blocked, so In-sung instructs him to call them and say he’s from the Financial Supervisory Service, just like when he got voice phished. Louis tries it (sounding hilariously familiar), but he just gets cursed out so badly his phone practically smokes.

Joong-won leads his team in planning a Black Friday event, and yet again, Mr. Lee is the first to complain about the increased workload. Joong-won tells him to hire some part-timers to pick up the extra work.

In the restroom, Ma-ri recalls her father’s request that she find out where Louis is living. She pretends to be so very concerned about the attack at Bok-shil’s house, and asks where Bok-shil is staying now. Bok-shil seems to sense something off, and fibs that she’s staying with the downstairs neighbor.

Ma-ri goes to check the place out, and runs into In-sung. When he sees her pretty face he goes all wobbly, and it takes him a minute to collect his wits. He says that the investigation is still ongoing if that’s why she’s here, then loses it again, actually giggles, and introduces himself. OMG, he totally dorked out.

Director Baek makes his way to the hospital, but the victim’s door is guarded by cops and he can’t get in. A nurse tells him that the victim is stable but still unconscious, and mentions that someone else asked her the same questions earlier.

Butler Kim is also at the hospital, and his inquiries aren’t yielding many results, either. He spots Director Baek on his way out, and the two men ask each other what they’re doing here.

Bok-shil treats the men to pork belly, and while she’s cooking, Joong-won finds a coin in the dryer. It has a smiley-face sticker on it, and he asks whose it is. Louis’s eyes go wide and he snatches at the coin, desperate to get it back, and in the scuffle the coin falls on the hot grill.

Louis barely hesitates before grabbing the coin, burning his fingers in the process. Bok-shil jumps up and grabs Louis’s hand, and asks why he burned his hand for that coin. Louis says it’s the first coin she ever gave him, and Bok-shil looks at Louis as if she’s seeing him for the first time.

Louis notices the look on her face, and Bok-shil just pouts and calls him an idiot. He fires back that she’s the idiot and makes her smile, and soon they’re grinning at each other like silly kids. They’re entirely wrapped up in each other, and Joong-won watches them sadly, feeling like the fifth wheel.

Late that night, after they’ve all gone to bed, Joong-won’s doorbell begins to ring insistently. It wakes up all three of them, and they pad to the front door, wondering who’s demanding entry in the middle of the night.

Joong-won turns on the video screen, and he’s surprised to see Director Baek standing on his doorstep.

COMMENTS

I was actually glad to see Joong-won step up in his awareness of his feelings in this episode, because it’s just silly that a man his age wouldn’t know what romantic attraction feels like. The show hasn’t made the age difference between Bok-shil and Joong-won much of an issue, and I can see how Joong-won might mistake his feelings for protectiveness and concern for a short while, but it was time for him to recognize that his interest in Bok-shil goes deeper than that. Unfortunately for him, he’s just all wrong for her — and even if he weren’t, Louis and Bok-shil are so tightly bonded by now that there’s no way Joong-won has even the slightest chance with her. I’m actually hoping that he knows it (and it looks like he does), and that instead of trying to break them up and make Bok-shil turn to him, that instead Joong-won’s journey will be about becoming a more open and loving person in general.

I do appreciate that he’s taking offense to the way Louis orders Bok-shil around, and doing something to stop it (though I wish he’d make Louis do things for himself instead of doing them for him in Bok-shil’s place). It’s the one thing Louis does that bothers me, and though I don’t think it comes from a place of egotistical entitlement — rather, he’s just so used to everyone catering to him that it comes naturally even when he really likes a person — it’s time for that little habit to get broken. As much as we all love Louis, there’s only so far charm can get you in the world, and it’s well past time for him to start learning to be self-sufficient. At the very least, he can pitch in while Bok-shil is at work, and make sure she comes home to a clean house and a warm dinner.

Interestingly, even though Bok-shil seems to cater to Louis’s every whim, I never feel like she’s a doormat. I believe that when she lived isolated with her grandmother and brother, she just fell into the role of caretaker because she was the child and the noona. It’s in her nature to take care of others, and her habit to do as she’s told, so she doesn’t see Louis’s bossiness as anything too out of the ordinary. But she also needs to learn that her doing things for Louis isn’t helping him become independent or capable. She can say no, and he can learn to take care of himself.

I find it interesting that it’s Louis’s jealousy over Bok-shil that seems to be getting him in touch with his memories, though they just sound hilariously like petty boasts to Bok-shil and Joong-won. I would love to see him regain his memory not from another blow to the head, but because his love for Bok-shil is so strong that his mind wants to remember so she’ll love him for himself. It would be an interesting twist on the amnesia trope, for Louis to actually will his own memory back, to impress his ladylove and show himself to be better than the competition.

That last scene between Louis, Bok-shil, and Joong-won, when Louis burned his hand, was a great example of what makes this show so good. There were so many different things happening in that scene, all without a relevant word being said. Louis’s treasuring of the coin for no other reason than because Bok-shil gave it to him, Bok-shil realizing that there’s more to Louis than she thought when he would save money for sentimental reasons, and Joong-won watching the two of them and realizing that he’ll never be a part of their little world. While I was so happy for Louis and Bok-shil and their growing feelings for each other, it also made my heart squeeze to see Joong-won, wanting so badly to connect with someone and knowing that he never will — not in the way he wants. Bok-shil and Louis belong together, and though I do expect that Joong-won won’t give up without a fight, there’s a certain comfort in knowing that no matter what happens, Bok-shil and Louis have a bond that can’t be broken.

Can I just say, how much I adore this series? It's a joy to watch. Here are some things I wanted to say, before I even read the review above:

1. Last week I said, that this show pretty much either exaggerate the usual drama tropes or use them upside down. And it literally hit me, when Cha Joong-Won was imagining Louis and Bok-Shil cuddeling, that they switched the usual drama leading man with the puppy second lead. In every other drams Joon-Won would be the leading man. I love what they did here.

2. Those guys in the background at the police station, wasn't one of them (bald and bearded) also on squad 38?

3. Wasn't Seo In Guk in total Yang Jung-Do mode, when he wanted to scam the girls? Even his voice was different. Well, it certainly didn't last long.

#3 - OH YES I actually had to go back and quick scan episode 1 of Squad 38 to actually compare and make screen caps! Being with In-sung just adds cherry on top, now I hope they can get Chief Baek to do a cameo on this drama. Between that and Joong-won's custom made sweats "stitch by stitch" by an French tailor I can't with the meta of this episode.

Surprising that this is the episode that actually brought in the most ratings for the show, but maybe viewers were tuning in because they were expecting to see the preview teasers that were shown in 5 and 6? (not saying what it is, but the show is SO RUDE by doing that lol)

OMG I know right!! They have been showing an almost-kiss scene in the previews for 3 episodes now (where bok shil and louie are standing in an alley of some sort and he is wearing a green jacket and he closes in for the kiss) and it still hasn't come up n the actual episode and IT'S SO FRUSTRATING!!!! I don't know about Nam Ji-hyun but Seo In-guk is an amazing kisser (sadly, not said from experience T_T ) and I can't wait to see a kiss scene between these 2 adorable characters!!!

Though this video made by fan to promote purpose, but i can see the difference between Jung Do and Louis. Seriously SIG is love.

#2 I don't know if the bald and bearded one was also on squad 38 (if you're asking if he was one of the posse of conmen... i dont believe so) BUT.... if you rewatch that part where BokShil and Louis are talking about how Louis could be just about anyone, the same bald bearded guy has his hands on his chin fawning over the couple the entire time in the background. It's a bit blurry but you can tell he's squealing over our OTP's moment...

I think I found my spirit animal: bald beardy thug ajusshi

Louie tried to do a scam like Jung Do, but all he got was a big red stamp "FAIL!" and it was hilarious.

also, his jealousy is the best, but I am torn between wanting to see this awesomely and in great detail acted petty jealously, and having sympathy towards him for it.

don´t know about the guy in the background, his face is in memes all over though. It might just be the similar clothes though. they are literally teasing us with that, it was too fast and too short.

Lois is the most adorable thing dropped on thing planet! And seo in guk is a king of disguise. I can totally see him retiring from the industry when he's old and giving lectures about acting in some prestigious school around the world.
Plus it's not just me who squeal over everytime he say "I'll do _____ for you Bok shil, trust me (nama bido)". Everytime he says this my isnsides start doing multiple somersault❤❤

Seo In Guk, matured… ‘One-man Show’
Seo In Guk’s role took the greatest part in ‘Shopaholic Louis’’s rating result. He turned into character ‘Louis’ as if the character itself is him, and attracted viewers. Source : http://m.star.naver.com/seoinguk/news/end?id=8359609&langCode=en

nope, so not a one-man-show!!!! without Nam Ji Hyun, it would be meaningless. it is their report, their mutual "strange kind of trust" and cute chemistry, that makes it. Most Louie´s actions are for Bok Shil now.

and I must say I noticed most female characters are tougher and more active / brisk than male characters. like women do, men react - usually it is the other way around. well some girls are too tough. but it is still valid

I noticed #1 in this ep too! The wife of the bad guy isn't also a bad guy. Yeah, she's a bit dim, but she genuinely cares for people, doesn't flaunt her position, and seems really sweet. The lady butler is reporting on the goings-on but she isn't a turncoat. She has been totally duped instead. So nice to see clichés switched and characters expanded. They feel so much more like real people that way.

I'm both excited and nervous that Louis' memory is slowly coming back. Nervous because that amnesia made their world very small, but excited to see how Louis will deal with his two worlds colliding. He's so adorable! I love that Bok-Sil knows the true essence of Louis even without knowing who he 'really' is. Gah, I need more Shopping King Louis.

Thanks Lollipip for the recap. But i would like to add that rather than Bok Shil just doing things for Louis, she would rather just spare having to do them again. look at where louis spilled water on the table, it was as if he was touching dirty water. so to avoid doing it again or rearranging the place she would rather do it herself. But can i just add that Ma ri's mum is so different from other cheabol mums who would be happy to get the thorn on thier side out. though she is clueless she is loveable.
Peace

I was also glad to see that Joong-won seemed to come to some degree of realization that he has no chance of coming in between Louis and Bok-shil. I hope it doesn't take him too long to fully realize that. Otherwise, he kind of comes off as a creeper.

Small music note ... John Denver's death anniversary was Wednesday. The use of one of his song ("Perhaps Love" duet with Placido Domingo) in this episode warmed my heart, coincidence or not.

I might be a little slow on the uptake, cause I just realized that all the episode titles coincide with a song they use. It's probably why this drama has such an unexpectedly unique and wonderful soundtrack. It's nice when show-makers put thought into things like that. ?

Yes! Not only significant but episode-defining. It's like the entire episode is built around that single most important part of the plot. It's a very straightforward way of highlighting the goals of the episode. Creative production. Someone should do a montage of the episode titles/songs alongside the exact scenes they play them. It'd be very interesting.

The more ep I watched the more confused I am about SIG I love. Which persona of him that I love the most, him as a serious-solemn-man with complicated past profiler? Or the witty-smart a**-loyal conman? Dedicated-committed-lost love Prince? The guy from Busan? Or the funny-naive-loving man-boy? Or... the smexy-smug-flirty chef? Can a man own those various persona and still look hot?

And NJH... gosh girl! I shipped her hard with KHN in Angel Eyes, then with PHS in WHTMF, and now she romance SIG funnily-convincingly. Idk what will happen to her when she reach her prime age as actress 25 - 35. Perhaps she would romancing the camera and I still find it believable and ship them hard.. ^^

Thanks for the recap, LollyPip!

njh and kang haneul were great together.

@59 min onwards..with the 3 of them... i'd just like to say, game over! hahaha :))) how bok shil looked at louis and joong won at npth louis and bokshil --- great scene! i also loved how they used the same opening song in this scene but softer and with a guitar. nice touch!

other things...i love the opening montage and happy to see one of the henchmen of task force 38. no mistaking his beard. :)

I can re-watch this series over and over. As much as I love all of SIG's other shows, I can only re-watch the comedic ones plus reply 97 (because it's short).

happy friday, everyone!

I didn't realize how young she is. She is just 21 this year.
Korean does consider actress around 30-35 their prime age as an actress. A lot of A list actress are around that age. She has great future ahead of her if she continue to pick great projects.

The answer to your confusion is very obvious dearie. You don't love SIG's different personas, instead you love the different sides of Seo In Guk as a person which get reflected in each of his characters. So in short, you just love Gukkie :D

in the last scene (kiss) of the preview though, it says

세계 속의 MBC
미래를 엽니다

anyone here fluent in korean? 미래 caught my eye because at least I know it means 'future'. i am not sure of the next word though. google translate says 'open'. In shows like '2 days 1 night', they usual say 다음 주 meaning 'next week'

Google translate is correct. 미래를 엽니다 literally means 'opening the future'. It's supposed to be MBC's slogan, so no, it's not really relevant to the actual show. Similar to a signature you would leave at the end of a message :)

Louis keeping the first coin Bok-shil gave him was sweet. That whole sequence was just perfect.

It's a testament to the writing and acting that Louis is so loveable despite turning everyone around him into servants. Louis is Louis despite losing his memories so it makes sense given his upbringing, but I agree it's time for him to start becoming self-sufficient. I'm looking forward to it. It's sure to be a bumpy but amusing process.

I laughed at Louis and Bok-shil watching a drama about a chaebol who turned into a beggar after getting amnesia. Also Louis' petty "I think I used to ..." that was all actually true.

I also love that everyone's complaint abt doing work for him, but they can't help themselves not to ?

After this episode, I truly wish Louis will start maturing. It's beginning to get on my nerves. I'm hoping he will continue his job and gradually learn that he needs to take care of himself. At the same time Bok-sil should also put her foot down and say no to Louis once in a while. There's so cute together but this kind of relationship is not healthy for them in the long run.

It was also painful to see Joong-won get his heart broken, knowing he can't get between our adorable couple. But the scene of Bok-sil and Louis, trapped in their own world and forgetting that Joong-won is right there, proves the strong connection they have and how it can never be broken. I truly wish them all the best and they get the happy ending they deserve. Please don't go on to the same path as the drama Louis was watching HAHAHAHA

The preview for the next episode showed us again the kiss scene and a bunch of important stuff. But I've been fooled many times by Shopping King Louis's previews, I'm developing trust issues. Or maybe, I should just stop over analyzing it and just wait for the next episode.

Oh god. Is it Wednesday already?

This episode me laugh for an hour straight. It's what I hoped Cinderella would be, fluffy and funny and cute but with heart.

Plus, super glad for SIG that ratings keep climbing, now in double digits as he wanted. My heart broke a little when it opened at 5%, but it's like he keeps telling Bokshil, just trust him! :-)

Louis' hilarious faces and pouting, and Director Baek's strategic "spies" so delighted to tell them they've found Louis! Haha--episode 7 had epic comedy.

The same could be said about Seo In Guk. The guy seems to have so much chemistry with all of his costars (both male and female). I wasn't worried about chemistry from the get go, both of these actors have such a natural attraction about them that it was inevitable.
As for Louis' character, he is human after all (well, half man, half puppy I guess) so he obviously has flaws. But the good waaay outbalances the bad so I'm good :)

Oh, how I love this show so much! I have just marathoner the show yesterday, and it had me laughing non-stop! The two of them are just too adorable! I am just getting worried that I might starting to let go my sense of reality and dreaming about having a Louie kind of boyfriend -which surely would be very handfuls to tend to tend to.

Just like everybody else here, I hope Louie would start learn how to take care of himself or even better, starts spoiling Bok-Shil at once because that would made me squeal even louder and definitely put me at sayonara with my reality. Hahaha haha

I kinda suspecting Louis has got his memory back and is actually in touch with Butler Kim though -hence Butler Kim being suspicious. I don't remember which episode, but, maybe the one that Butler Kim was looking for while he was talking on the phone with somebody is Bok-Shil's lost brother? I think I would be a little bit disappointed if that was the case though.

And I definitely love Mari's mother! It's very refreshing to have a non-greedy, innocent, non-cunning female relatives like her in K-Drama!

And I realize that this drama pays odes to SIG former roles in I Remember You and Police Unit 38. The scene where he pretends to be a Police Inspector on the phone and gets cussed out by the teenagers is comedic gold.

This episode once again had me in stitches from start to finish, especially when CEO's wife did the very opposite of what he sent her to do and bragged about it. Poor woman! Next time it'd be helpful for him to tell her why he's sending her there and then she won't screw up so badly! Lol.

SIG is killing it, AGAIN, I am amazed and just fall in love with him more and more. And NJH is truly one great actress. Her subtle expression and comedic timing is gold. Together with SIG, they shine so bright in this drama.

First off, we've been conned. I won't explicitly say it cause I believe previews are considered spoiler territory on DB, but MBC showed us that thing that happens back in the preview for episode six and we still wont get to see it until next week! ?

Secondly, yay for 10% ratings! Idk why, but it always feels more rewarding when a show starts out small and builds an audience, rather than being a hit from the get go.

Man, that coin scene made my heart melt into a puddle of goo. It perfectly encapsulates how just how innocent and earnest Louis and Bok Shil's feelings are for one another. It's amazing that these two goobers have ended up with what is probably the healthiest and most supportive relationship of 2016. ❤️

What is up with the cute police officers?!

I'm not sure what to make of Ma Ri. I kinda hate her. I kinda understand the effect she has on the stort. I kinda don't. Someone on Viki commented about ff her and I was like "already? It's only ep 6" cause I was on 6 at the time. But then I was like "nope. You didn't miss much." But I did start skipping her dad in this ep. Thanks, LollyPip for the recap so I don't have to waste any more seconds on him than necessary.

I was kinda hoping Louis would stay a suspect longer so he could be put on a "Most Wanted" list and found that way. But it's still too early for the amnesia to leave. Omo, what if the amnesia doesn't leave and he refuses to go with his family? That would be bittersweet but could be spun in a fun way.

Why does no one care about Louis' languages or vast knowledge of material items but lack of home training?! It screams abnormal life.

Is eomma from R88 bad? Please no. I think she's just a bit confused. Not as much as the eomma in this drama though. Her brag to her husband was cute and sad. "Don't come back. Seeing your face will make me sick" ??? poor girl.

I want more story about the butler's analyzing abilities. Is it because of affection for Louis or something else? They already told us he went to a SKY school. Could he be the genius this kdrama is missing?

Anywah rich eomma ships the butlers, yay! My shipper heart also loves them & In Sung/Ma Ri *you know, if she's not evil*

Can Louis please work at the company already? Just keep grandma away. He can't be found out for another week at least.

+100 on the last 3 paragraphs of the comments, LollyPip. If that's how he regained his memory it would be perfect. And I loved your understanding of Bok Shil's personality, temperament, and experience in life.

Top Quotes/Moments:

1) The poor group sharing a room for the night. And especially Oppa's comment on our puppies/kittens relationship. It is a bond impossible to understand.
2) The scene in the police office. The thug in the background that was blushing was perfect and the cheering. But what Bok Shil said about your past self affecting your present self was great. She trust in his past self because of his present and he should as well. And even if Louis (or anyone) was a bad person before, the past can change the present you for the better.
3) The ending, before President came. Omo, he kept the money as a sentimental item. And Bok Shil's expression! ?

Fin~

+100 for your whole comment!

We definitely have a lot of cute police officers in this series and definitely not complaining hehe ;) I was almost suspicious of the one who questioned Louis and thought he was with the "antagonists" (in quotes because they are in their own fantasy world) but he was just doing his job! It's been a while since I've seen a public broadcast kdrama police officer actually do his job so kudos to you, cute police officer!

I think our Jo In Sung oppa *snort* is the only one that actually has an inkling that Louis may be from an abnormally rich background but I can't blame people (and InSung) from not going further from just those thoughts when it seems like no one recognizes Louis or is looking for someone like him.

I didn't know how Mari's mom would play out in this drama but she a perfect addition to the clueless "antagonists" ;)

I don't have much more to add in making a separate comment so I just wanted to add onto #2 of your Top Moments: BokShil and Louis go back and forth as to who Louis could really be and Louis mentions that he could be a man with a wife, and Bokshil says to herself "I hope that's not true." It was a short moment but I couldn't help but fawn over it like my spirit animal bald beardy thug ajusshi because it confirms that BokShil was definitely seeing Louis as more than just a friend or someone she wants to take care of.

GAH I can never get over this coupleeeee

In Sung has mentioned it a few times. And yes, I understand why Chaebol alarm does go off with the fact that no one is looking for him. But surely Oska (sorry, he's winning me over to this role but I still can't help it), thinks something is askew. He may not have been filthy rich, but he could have been a nomad for all we know and traveled to these countries cheaply. I'm just curious for a throw away line about his languages or intel. From Oska, as everyone else shows they won't take it seriously. But Oska must realize there is a difference between dirt poor and filthy rich. I mean, he's not the riches person he knows.

For all they know, Louis could have been a roving child of 5-8 with an aunt who sold his parents house and abandoned him to England. Which is why he's not a registered citizen. From there, he made his way throughout Europe. Paid for by part time jobs, news paper deliver, modeling until he had enough to live in a good house. Quit modeling at 12-14 and that's why they wouldn't recognize him. He just lived in the house with a tv, delivery food, and fridge. It was paid for through his royalties from various activities based on SIG talents. He could have been a recluse for the past however many years - and he pretty much was.

I'm not saying rhey should figure out the truth, just question it. But people don't often speak what 4 languages thus far though more were mentioned. But has he spoken a language besides English in front of people who aren't Bok Shil.

Louis had an abnormal childhood. Like In Sung's imagination from a few eps back, I want to see what else they can come up with in the hijinks before the truth comes out.

The best part of her joining is MaRi's mom doesn't even know they are antagonists. Clueless team, indeed.

Yes, I did catch that beautiful comment. This is more than friendship and I was covering my face much like background ahjussi. The philosophical part simply overshadowed the sweet for me.

LOL I love your imagination of Louis' possible past! Like Louis said, his past is full of all possibilities and impossibilites ;)

You do make a good point that Oska should be questioning Louis's real background. But perhaps that's the last thing on his mind? He may feel weirded out about Louis antics but it may be more like "this guys is weird", "he's annoying," "what is this dude?" especially since some of his antics are more childish than chaebol-ish? But more than "maybe this guy's real past is a chaebol" maybe his train of thought goes towards "I need to get this weirdo away from BokShil." Perhaps when he gets a breather and thinks the whole thing through a bit he may come to the conclusion of "wait... this guy may be a chaebol." All this is hearsay on my part but perhaps?

I think it's even weirder that all InSung, BokShil, and Louis himself haven't posted Louis' picture on the internet to find out what his true identity is. But then again... this drama would have ended a bit too early if that were so, right?

Yes yes yes! And if I may add, who is butler Kim calling to report about Louie's whereabouts????? I've been racking my brain for all the other episodes but it seems that no such clue or pre-introduction has ever been done on that aspect. And the serial killer! At first I thought it might have been Bok Nam or a friend of Bok Nam's but the callousness at how he hit scarface's head is too eery.

And will the director with the curly bangs offer the second intern job to Louie? (since JW gave him that task).

I wonder where Louie's jealousy will take him. I hope he'll be taken to his betterment, which is possibly more guard dog than puppy. You know, I clamor for him to realize that he needs to be a better man, not just as a package better than what JW is, but ultimately in maturity and accountability. That's what JW is that he isn't---both men are rich anyway. Also, please please use more of dependable detective cop as a contrast to JW and Louie too--- as a guy Bok Sil can depend on emotionally too (on the same social strata) just so Louie gets a bit shaken that the throne may be his, but it could also be any body's especially since Bok Sil is not entirely a lady originally belonging to his kingdom.

And yes. I'm for Louie being found by the family before he regains his memories... Yep, I've decided that's what I want. The other option, him getting back his memories before he is found perhaps CHOOSING to stay with Bok Sil and never going back is interesting too but, ah I don't know. I'll leave the writer to it.

I just wonder how Bok Sil will adjust to the fact that he is in fact a 2nd generation chaebol----surely, them discussing that amnesia TV drama (aside from being funny) is also ominous of the looming reveal, isn't it? I wonder if that "reality" will affect their bond...

Well, Louis was already trying to escape his sheltered and privileged life even before the amnesia. Remember, he tried to run away from home right before they found out about grandma's collapse. So, I suspect his finding out who he really is won't make that much of a difference to how he acts and the choices he makes in regard to Bok Sil.

Hilarious. Been sometimes didn't laugh this much while watching drama.

Thanks Lollipip for pinpointing Louis annoying behavior ordering people around. You are right, a simple warm meal and clean house is what matter after a long day.... Bok Shil just lived with Louis for some weeks, I am rather worried with their relationship... because seeing constant mess and being food deprived after work could really put a test on love. Really.

True to that ! I truly hope that Louis will 'grow up' very soon , know how to earn money n be more responsible rather than acting like a king ! Lol. I don't mind him being shopping king but he should not be a king at other places n ppl waiting on him like maids/servants. Can I add that the upbringing on him was actually wrong? No thanks to butler Kim n his grandma !

that preview is just about driving me insane. My big doubt or question is: to whom did Bok Shil tell "I am flattered, but I´ll decline"? it seems to be Joong Won but it could also be Louie, but why would she talk so polite to Louie? Or did it happen after he got his memory back.

I am just so desperate for our cuties to stay together I don´t want anything to drive them apart. even Louis´ identity.

and I bet they are going to push back the kiss into yet another week. this show is supposed to be a different show, but sometimes the con us like it is the season two of 38TF we so wanted, but I DIDNT WANT IT HERE. goddammit. what is this. told you so. never trust SIG again. Cons are written in his genes and carry over to his dramas like an epidemy. if next week we´re gonna get a "Ha ha!, got you!" again, I just...I dunno. will feel utterly defeated.

people dont change fast in life. some women wait for their man to change for decades. But you can only make old habits go dormant, not delete them for good. and there are plenty of men who act just as irresponsible. Louis is truly trying though, unlike some guys IRL ...we don´t see all his efforts, we just get surprised here and there by a single expression of his hard efforts. we really dont know his trail of thought.

Oohlahlah! So many comments to read but I have to write my thoughts down before I lose them. But first, thank you DB for the recaps!

Ah! Apart from the Squad38 imitation, for a minute when Louie kept yapping about those designer cycle shoes, he reminded me of Lee Hyun and his ability to sherlockly point out facts. Except Louie is pouty and flouncy and Lee Hyun was oolahlah sexy and cold.

My favorite scenes definitely include the coin scene and also the sardine sleeping position of the four of them. To me it embodied the drama in so many ways-- they're family! It was so endearing to find the four of them cuddled up that way. Bok Sil and Louie is so in sync too but that's stating the obvious. The real gem in that scene was the solid acting from all four of them. All of them were so in tune to the humor and not one face lacked a detailed expression to support it. I definitely loved that scene. I must have repeated it five times. "I also particularly liked the police station scenes for the same reason that Bok Sil and Louie are displaying their "incomprehensible trust system" as Jo In Seong had earlier pointed out (it wall always feel odd to use THE Jo In Sung's name in this manner). Aside from the cute ahjussi thugs, there's a sense of belonging between Bok SIl and Louie that's just theirs. And did anybody else notice the way JW eyed the good-looking detective???? Was that curious jealousy over the fact that the detective knew Bok Sil? Ok so maybe I'm pushing it but I just really want more of the detective, especially connected with Bok Sil too. Also, Jung Woon, Ma Ri and IN Seong. Please let this triangle happen. Let it be love pentagonwith the detective and the mongmongi couple please!

And oh, the chemistry between Seo IN Guk and Nam Ji Hyun in the coin scene was so cute. Hahaha. BTS please!!!

Favorite moments:

1. The two ditzy moms.
2. Louie and Bok Shil eating jajangmyeon with sauce all over their faces
3. Yoon Sang Hyun making a veiled Secret Garden reference with the tracksuit being made "stitch by stitch"

The drama spoofed a lot of SIG's past dramas already, but I'm wishing for these:

From Reply 1987 - "should I not meet her? Tell me not to meet her." And the "confirmation" kiss that recently won the TvN kiss award.

From High School King of Savvy - delicious swearing sessions that would put the teenage girl gang group to shame and the plastered arm kiss (well, I'll settle for a patch kiss).

From Fraud Sqaud 38 - some nipple biting bromance and you'be been conned moments.

Oooohhh interesting conjecture. So there's a possibility that Bok Nam is involved in more than just bullying. Kids are the true villains! Eery! It's like the minions are over taking the world.

I love all your "reference request" i think it's the first time a drama referenced this much and this many, it's like the writer is one of us avid drama watchers and have been waiting for a chance to poke at them all.

So far no one has commented on the thuggish, possibly illegal past of grandma's housekeeper/companion. Surely the writer didn't just throw that information into the mix for no good reason. That she's going to Seoul to help the Butler find Louis will provide a perfect opportunity for her to call on her shady past to good effect (or at least, one hopes).

...in Episode 6, after the late night "I miss you" and "I miss you at least 10 thousand times" text conversation, when Louis covered the eyes of the little dog statue with a squirmingly shy, "What are you looking at?!"

My heart just about melted <3

I now anticipated (sadly) that most likely Bok Nam was already dead n he died in place of Louis in that manipulated car accident. If Bok Shih know this she would feel very sad n reject and avoid Louis later on (I mean it will affect their relationship if she comes to know that her beloved bro die becos of Louis)...

I have laughed so hard since Ep 1 but the episodes this week were the best so far.

Another reference to SIG's past dramas was when while at the police station, Louis lamented to BK that he could be married with a kid - that was referring to his weekend KBS drama 'The (Rascal) sons' (2012) where his character Seung-gi was married n had a son but he was such a player! That was the FIRST time i saw SIG and was impressed with his bad boy 'James Dean'-y image. After that, i marathoned Reply 1997!

With this series SIG has played 'king' 3 times : High School Savvy, King's Face and now Shopping King.

Hail to the 'king' before he starts his enlistment!

Another thing - maybe the 'villian Diector Baek' may just turn to the good mentor for Louis just like Chief Baek in PS38. Maybe SIG is destined to have bromance with Ajushhi named Baek!

Seriously, everytime i see L n BK - i want to put them in my pocket n bring them home -they are just so cute together with the honest emotions ! DEFINITELY COUPLE OF THE YEAR!

I have read in 2 interviews where SIG says he likes to learn from veteran actors/actresses.

When asked why he appeared in a 50 episode weekend drama The Rascal Sons - he said that he wanted to take the time in a long drama to learn from his sunbae-nims.

In most recent interviews for the Shopping King Louis - he said that he was blown away by Nam Ji Hyun's activing know-how and said that he wanted to learn ALOT from her!

So if he is NOT a natural born genius - he certainly likes LEARNING his craft and I guess that is how he becomes good with each drama he undertakes.

Fighting SIG!!

P/S - correction - The Rascal Sons is a MBC drama (not KBS!)

Cuteness aside,

there is two major concern/flaws that bothered me so much since ep 2

1) why the grandma didn't do postmorterm when it is involved her only heir?

2) why face of Louise arent recognive in the paper or in the company when he actually should be put when he is 'died'.

Can anyone answered me? please..

I got no idea too.. Even if car crash and explosion, there opt to be some form of remains right?? (Cant be everything burn to ashes and turn to thin air?)

And why are they, at least Grandma & Butler Kim whom suspect Louis is still alive just because of the writing style on the internet reviews.. Why are they still open to the idea of someone having even possibility of still alive when he is supposed to be "dead".. i wouldnt entertain that thought totally

The others, i could understand, since they did see Louis in one way or another in the TV or real life.. Even Director Baek wife also think its impossible to be Louis despite watching him on tv, which is the normal reaction to me.. i personally find grandma and butler kim is reacting differently from logic, based on what we know so far as of this ep..

Unless at the beginning there were some form of knowledge given to us / scene that they cant be sure its Louis 100%.. then it might make more sense or that possibility exist..

With the advance of technology (isnt it what this show is selling and coming strong at) Its not totally impossible to do a check.. i just find it too simple and shabby to conclude it as Louis died just because its his car and he's suppose to be the driver driving and his watch is there.. at least theres blood on the watch, why didnt police even do a DNA? and what happened to the body? no dead body? i mean its a foul, but we all know its not Louis, since he's alive.. and those bad guys didnt even went to the extreme to hide/remove the body after the accident or do some touch-up to make them fully convinced its Louis without doing extra forensic work..

(this just reminds me of Who Are You School 2015 where the dead body was simply concluded as the girl)

As for the "face".. I mean it would be good if its explained to us.. But i just assumed, they are rich and the case is concluded as an accident. It should not be too big of an issue to suppress the incident.. maybe for privacy purpose from the family, want to keep it down and as low as possible.. or maybe not to affect the company shares price, since he's the heir and who knows what unscrupulous reporter would report that could adversely affect them..

So far I enjoyed this drama, but a bit by a bit I got more and more annoyed by Louis' immaturity and rudeness.

I just hope this will change soon, because it is really not amusing to watch him trying to prevent Cha to eat breakfast cooked by Bok Sil. And to see him treating everyone like they were servants. Not amusing at all, it shows him having very low understanding of his situation, and that is an obvious mark of stupidity.

I can't stand stupid (Louis) and doormat (Bok Sil) protagonists.
